Time Machine full error - mds problem?!

Hi,
my Time Machine Volume is near full.
In SL times, the TM did overwrite oldest content and worked further.
Now, LION, i get an error , TM failed in red:
This backup is too large for the backup volume. 20.12 GB for the backup is needed, but only 12.21 GB available.
Time Machine requires an additional space for the backup to the additionalspace on the backup volume. Open the System Preferences "Time Machine" to select a larger volume backup or exclude files by reducing the memory requirements.
I looked in console and can see these mds (spotlight?) error belong to the TM process.
27.07.11 12:31:56,388 com.apple.backupd: Finished scan
27.07.11 12:32:20,316 com.apple.backupd: 18.73 GB required (including padding), 11.38 GB available
27.07.11 12:32:20,316 com.apple.backupd: No expired backups exist - deleting oldest backups to make room  // OK; should do that
27.07.11 12:32:20,318 mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume  // belongs that to TM, mds is spotlight i think
27.07.11 12:32:31,202 com.apple.backupd: Backup failed with error: Not enough available disk space on the target volume.
Why LION TM does not overwrite oldest TM content and went further (after the known message that older content will be deleted/overwritten).
Bug or can i do anything?
Does LION need spotlight enabled on all Volumes which get backuped ? I dont had spotlight on using Snow Leopard / TM.

Thanks , i will look into.
But thats an old TM version thread from 10.5+10.6 time.
Never had probs with TM and my TM Volume (internal HD) before, like that people in the thread.
Someone knows if the mds error (comes up at TM backup) has to do with TM backup?
I disabled spotlight on all Volumes, beside my boot volume.

  • Mac enters a deep sleep during Time Machine full restore

I have the problem listed in the subject. Here is my configuration:
Mac Pro (early 2008), dual quad-core Xenon 2.8 GHz, 10 GBs of RAM, hard disks as follows:
Bay 1: 1 TB HD System, running OS X 10.6.2, ~500 gigs used, ~400 gigs free, small Bootcamp partition
Bay 2: 1.5 TB hard disk, used exclusively for backing up the drive in Bay 1
Bay 3: 1 TB spare drive, currently contains only OS X 10.6.2 plus some utilities. This drive is not backed up.
    Bay 4: empty
OK, so now for what happened. Recently, I had an issue with my main drive (bay 1); rather than attempt to fix it, I decided to reformat the drive and restore from a Time Machine backup. I booted off the Snow Leopard DVD, chose the Restore option from the Utilities menu, and started the restore.
When I returned to the Mac after a couple of hours to see how things were going, the Mac was asleep and could not be woken up by moving the mouse, clicking its buttons, or hitting any key on the keyboard. The (wired) keyboard was totally inactive (no caps lock light, etc.). Pressing the Power button on the Mac Pro didn't do anything, nor could I connect to it from my MacBook Pro by means of screen or file sharing. The only thing I could do was to hold the power button in until the machine turned off completely. Restarting from the DVD worked fine.
I looked for answers on the web, and I found a couple of posts here. One of them suggested setting the sleep parameter to "Never" (if one still had a boot partition); I did that by booting from the disk in bay 3, not quite believing it would work since I was booting from the DVD to do the restore.
Once booted from the DVD, I tried the other answer I had found, and that is executing the command "pmset sleep 0" in the terminal before launching the restore. I got an error to the effect that the write operation failed (duh!), but I thought that maybe the parameter would be held in memory. I started the restore operation again and went to sleep.
Needless to say, the same thing happened again. The only way I was finally able to perform the restore was by sitting next to the machine and moving the mouse every few minutes to keep the system awake. This process took a little over two and a half hours (which is not bad considering the amount of data involved). The operation was successful, and I was able to boot from the restored drive. Everything is now back to normal. However, I am puzzled by the apparent necessity to babysit the Mac while it is restoring from a Time Machine backup.
This clearly did NOT happen with the Leopard (10.5) DVD. I suspect (but don't know for sure) that the 10.5 DVD's system included a never sleep setting that Apple forgot to include on the 10.6 DVD.
Is anybody able to perform lengthy restores by booting from the Snow Leopard DVD? If so, how do they get around the sleep issue? Or doesn't it happen in the first place? I would also like to know what state my Mac is in when it stops in the middle of a restore operation; it is clearly not a normal sleep mode since I haven't actually found any way of waking it up.
Finally, I would love to be able to boot from my Bay 3 drive and launch a system restore operation from there since both the Time Machine drive and the target drive would be available. Is there any way at all that this can be done? Has anyone succeeded in using the Time Machine full restore from any location other than the OS DVD? This would obviously be interesting since one could continue to use the Mac while the restore operation is ongoing.
Thanks for any info anyone can provide.
    Daniel

something is wrong with your system. changing energy saver settings while booted normally from an external should have taken care of this issue. I suggest you reset SMC
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
and you are right, using "pmset sleep 0" from terminal while booted from the DVD does not work. I think it was me who recommended that. that was very dumb of me. thanks for pointing that out. but it should not be necessary as i mentioned.
all that said, in response to your last question yes it is perfectly possible to run the installer and the restore utility while booted normally from another drive. beeing quite impatient (and having a mac pro with several internal bays ) this is the only way I ever install or restore. also, I don't use the DVD itself. I made a small partition on one of my internals and cloned the SL install DVD to that. it works much quicker from there.
anyway, to start the installer while booted normally from another drive run the following terminal command
    sudo /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/CDIS/Mac OS X Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Mac OS X Installer
this will let you use the mac and do other things while the restore is going on.

  • Unable to boot after Time Machine full system restore!!

I was having some serious slowdowns with my computer. I did multiple RAM and HD hardware tests, everything seemed to be working fine. I had recently deleted a bunch of files in order to free up some HD space, so I thought that may be the culprit. So I did a Time Machine backup and restored the Powerbook to it's original 10.3 software. All was fine. Then I upgraded back to 10.5 and all was fine. Then I did a Time Machine full system restore overnight and got the message "Your restore was successful, you must now restart your computer" (or something to that effect). Now I get the start-up chime and startup screen (apple logo) but then the computer shuts itself down. I have reset the PMU and PRAM to no effect. I have tried booting up in safe made, also no dice. I have tried starting it up with the time machine HD attached - doesn't help. I guess I'll need to hit the genius bar but wanted to ask the friendly discussion forum folks first. thanks in advance.

    Hi coldengray
Did you try to start from your System-CD? Hold down C-key during startup, start DiskUtility from the menu and verify/repair disk and permissions there.
If the CD is not available you can also connect your TimeMachine-Disk, select it as startup volume in System Preferences/StartupDisk, restart and then run DiskUtility from folder Applications/Utilities
    Good luck P

Click the Apple menu at the left end of your menubar. Select "About this Mac." You will get a window like this:
Your Mac OS version is indicates in the image by the upper red arrow. While you are there, please tell us what information you find for "Processor," where the lower red arrow is pointing.

  • Difference in Time Machine full restore instructions

My daughter had to replace a hard drive. She called Apple for help in a Time Machine full restore and was told to first install OSX from her DVD on the new hard drive and then do a Time Machine restore from the latest backup. It seems to me the last time we did a full restore with a new hard drive, we just formatted the new drive and then booted from the Time Machine option on the OSX disk and them did a full restore from the latest Time Machine backup. That restore restored OSX and everything that was backed up. Since these two methods are different, do you still get to the same restore point with either method?

There are two approaches depending upon what you backup. If you do a full backup of all system files then boot from the OS X installer disc, use Disk Utility to erase the drive, then opt to do a full restore from a TM backup drive. If you don't backup all system files then follow the procedure recommended by AppleCare.
For more please read the three User Contributed Tips you will find at the top of this forum's topic list. Also select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine." This will bring up numerous help articles on using TM.

  • Time Machine Backup error - The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Extreme.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).

I am getting a Time Machine backup error "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Extreme.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."
Then a Finder window pops up with the backup directory in it.  When I open it I see all the backups that were completed successfully and then the one there is simply always shows the data and .inProgress.  I thought that maybe if I could delete the one that is perpetually in progress it would start a new one and run fine, but I won't let me delete it.

Reboot the TC.. or go to the 5.6 utility.. and disconnect all users.. to force it to reconnect.

  • Time machine: An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.

Time machine backups are failing. I've followed the instructions I found on the Time Machine troubleshooting page (http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html) but have gotten to where I don't know what to do next.
    Sequence of events:
The main error message is always:
An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Yesterday, I opened Disk Utility and verified the disk. Got this error:
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I ran Disk Utility and repaired the hard drive. Then I manually started the backup before going to bed, figuring it was going to take a long time to run. When I got up this morning, the backup had failed with the same "could be temporary" error. I checked the log, which says:

Does anyone know what the problem is here and what I should do?
    Thanks,
    Tery

You have repaired your boot drive (which is good) but have you repaired your time machine drive?  I don't own a Time Capsule so I don't know if disk utility can operate on it.  If it can, you should repair it as well.  You may need to erase it and start a new backup.  That happens to time machine volumes from time to time and is why people who are serious about their data never rely on a single source of backup.

  • I am having a problem with Time Machine, the error msg is "Time Machine.app can't be modified or deleted because it is required by MacOsX". It was working and now it is not.

Should have added that I am trying to retrieve back-up images.
    David

More information about how it isn't working and what it is doing would help.

  • Time Machine - ambiguous error message, cannot backup

I've been without use of Time Machine for sometime (months) now.  I've been getting the following error:
My backup drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex - 320GB) was a attached to my Airport Extreme, but in desperation I moved it to being directly attached to my MBP.  I've also excluded large number of files from the back up (reduced the full backup size to half the size of the backup disk).  Also, I've erased and reformatted the back up disk - twice.  No errors on it either.
What would be really helpful, was if there was some indication as to WHAT the problem actually is.  This is a rather ambiguous error message, which does little to help a person to troubleshooot.  It seems like the backup is being hung up on a file or files...but I'm just guessing.
Has anybody out there run into this?  If so, what was your solution?

  • How to resolve Time Machine indexing error backup failure?

Time Machine has stopped backing up to my Time Capsule with the following error:
    Indexing a file failed. Returned 200 for: /Users/neilashman/Downloads/Assessment info May 2011-1.doc, /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Neil Ashman’s iMac/2011-04-20-193411.inProgress/7B81F305-01CD-43EB-BFB0-AC16505C2106/Macintos h HD/Users/neilashman/Downloads/Assessment info May 2011-1.doc
Aborting backup because indexing a file failed.
    Stopping backup.
I've tried resetting the Time Capsule, but still no luck.
The only thing I can think that changed before it stopped working was installing Dropbox.  Could this be the problem?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions.  I've worked through everything in #C3, but still no luck.  Both the Time Capsule and HD on the iMac have no errors when Verified or Repaired.  Installing the "combo" update also hasn't helped.
Are you getting the exact same error on the exact same file that you excluded?  If so, try the full reset.
If you're getting similar errors on different files, that may be an indication of a problem with the file(s) involved or OSX.  You might try copying some of them to the MacBook, and see if Time Machine can back them up from there.
Is there anything else I can try without having to Reinstall OSX??
Sounds like you've done most everything else.  And reinstalling isn't a big deal on Snow Leopard -- it just installs a fresh version of OSX without disturbing anything else.
I also have a Macbook set up to backup to the Time Capsule.  This is working fine - does this suggest the Time Capsule is OK and it's a problem on the iMac?
Most likely.  It's barely possible there's a bad spot on the TC's hard drive, in an area where the iMac's backups are, but that's a very long shot.
Is there a way I can recreate the Time Machine backup file on the TC without losing the existing version?
I'm not sure just what you mean, but if you mean forcing a new, full backup, then no, the only ways to do that iare to delete the iMac's backups, or back up to a different destination.

  • Time Machine backup error (see logs)

I got this error twice today on a Time Machine backup. Disk Util shows the backup disk ("Drifting") to be ok.

...can anyone make anything of this? Has been working fine for months.
    ? Tnx.

The subdirectory nesting could be part of the underlying problem. Is there anything on your hard drive nested over 100 levels deep?
Spotlight (any of the stuff in the log starting with "md) is having problems with the files as well as Time Machine. You can force Spotlight to reindex by dragging the drive to the Privacy pane in Spotlight's preferences and then dragging it out again. However, I would be highly doubtful that would solve the problem given Disk Utility's complaint about folders being too deeply nested. If no one comes up with a solution here try asking about this in the Using Mac OS X Leopard forum.

  • External Hard drive/Time Machine backup error message

On a sidenote, I posted a question a week ago about what external hard drive would be compatible with my Macbook, and I so happened to get a WD My Passport Studio hard drive as an unsuspecting gift, so I didn't have to buy one.
Anyways, I started the backup on this hard drive and I had an error message: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." I searched this on the Apple Support Communities and found that I wasn't the only one who had this problem. So, I came upon one discussion that suggested downloading Time Machine Buddy (link:http://pondini.org/TM/A1.html) (link that prompted me to download: http://pondini.org/TM/C3.html). I downloaded it and found out that the error was occurring in my Library folder, specifically in the folder entitled "db" in the "Receipts" folder. There's one file in the "db" folder entitled "a.receiptdb" <----can someone please explain what the heck this is??? Lol. Anyways, I decided to exclude the whole "Receipts" folder from being backed up and now my external hard drive is backing up my files fine. My MAIN question is this: What is wrong with my receipts folder that is causing the error?
P.S. here are the error messages in the Time Machine Buddy log:
    Error: (-36) SrcErr:YES Copying /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb to (null)
    Error: (-36) SrcErr:NO Copying /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb to /Volumes/My Passport Studio/Backups.backupdb/Josh Brew’s MacBook/2012-01-29-162450.inProgress/D9F83053-7FE1-4EBE-991A-F400C35D37CC/Macin tosh HD/Library/Receipts/db
    Stopping backup.
    Error: (-8062) SrcErr:NO Copying /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb to /Volumes/My Passport Studio/Backups.backupdb/Josh Brew’s MacBook/2012-01-29-162450.inProgress/D9F83053-7FE1-4EBE-991A-F400C35D37CC/Macin tosh HD/Library/Receipts/db
Copied 246 files (277.4 MB) from volume Macintosh HD.
    Copy stage failed with error:11
    Backup failed with error: 11
As you can see, iy is located in the "db" folder. I have no idea what's wrong. Thank you for your time! It is MUCH appreciated.

The connection to 10.6.7 may just be a coincidence.  I had a similar problem with a disk and was about to throw it out but decided to try a different USB cable.  That fixed the problem and the drive is still in use.
Try a new cable if you have not already done so.

  • Time Machine Full Recovery From Wireless Backup

I am reporting this as a learning experience for all.
I just had a hard drive fail on my MacBook. Apple Care was golden and now I have a clean install with Leopard.
Here is my situation. MacBook backed up via time machine on a wireless network. Windows on boot camp partition. Dedicated disk (1TB Buffalo) connected to wife's iMac via firewire.
I want to do a full recovery. I start up leopard and it gives me the option to do a full recovery during setup. I have no time machine backup list provided. I continue with setup. When I go to the recover option of time machine I am asked to select a file. This is when I call tech support.
Tech Support says I should have had the backup disk connected directly via firewire for setup to see it. Time machine stores the backup under these conditions as a Sparse bundle. Now that I am past setup I have to do a migration rather than a recovery. I start up the migration assistant and I still cannot access the sparse bundle as it is grayed out. The leap here is you have to mount the sparse bundle, double click, then it shows up as a disk you can migrate from.
Windows Partition, as TS puts it is "on its own".
The confusion for me was that I could not recover exactly as I had backed up.
I hope this helps someone. Cheers!

It seems to be. All music, photos, applications, etc. are present. I have not had time to do a complete review of my migration, I will track this post for a while and report any problems. There were significant OS updates which were required. I thought that they would be included as part of the migrate, not so. Perhaps they are on a true "full recovery" from setup, any one know?
Migration has no option for any part of the OS. It assumes you already have it.
If you recover your entire system from a TM backup (assuming nothing significant was excluded), you get your entire system back exactly the way it was: the OS, Apps, settings, preferences, user data, etc.
You don't load a new OS from the Leopard Install disc -- you only use it for it's copy of Disk Utility and the installer -- everything else comes from your TM backup.

  • Time Machine disk errors

I'm having problems with my Time Machine drive. (Note: this may be a hardware issue, rather than a software one.)
Time Machine backups have stopped, and the system won't recognize the Time Machine drive.
Disk Utility does recognize the drive. verify yields the following:
    Verifying volume “TimeMachine”
    Checking journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
Incorrect block count for file objects.nib
(It should be 736 instead of 1)
    Invalid catalog record type
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
Any hints what to do next. I booted from my install disk, which is OSX 10.3.5. I'm running OSX 10.5.7, and I don't want to revert to 10.3.5. (the install disk seems to want to install its OS.)
    Any hints what to do?
    Any diagnostics?
I'm willing to erase the Time Machine drive if that will help.
    Thanks.

    stirling-dad wrote:
Thanks for the reply. OK, I need to buy a new hard drive, sigh. Five questions:
    1. Is there any reason to get a FireWire drive? My current and failed TimeMachine drive was USB.
Most folks here would say that F/W is faster, even though the rated speed is about the same. You'll get more throughput because the F/W chipset does a lot of the work that must be done by the CPU for USB. F/W also seems to be more reliable. I've got a Seagate, partly on reputation and reviews, but also because it had a 5-year warranty.
    2. What should the capacity of the new drive be? My current TimeMachine volume has a capacity of 232 GB with the main volume having a capacity of 149GB with 81GB used. The TimeMachine drive (when it worked) never came close to capacity.
2-3 times the capacity of what it's backing-up is a rough place to start. If you don't anticipate that 81 gb (assuming "the main volume" means your internal HD) growing significantly, or your habits changing much, you'll be fine. You might want to go somewhat larger, at little cost, and put a 120 gb or so partition on it for a "bootable clone" using CarbonCopyCloner (which I use), SuperDuper!, or the like. There are advantages and disadvantages to clones, as there are for other types of backup apps, so doing both gets you a bit of extra insurance and all the advantages.
    3. Do you have any brand suggestions for a new TimeMachine drive?
Most drives from most of the major vendors are pretty good. A few fail early, some seem to live forever. We do see a lot of posts here with problems with Western Digitals, but it's hard to tell if they really fail more than others. And the models change so fast that by the time one seems either very good or very bad, it's out of production anyway! If you think you'll ever want to run a clone, though, check the WD website for the model you're interested in -- many of them are not bootable.
    4. Do you have any vendor suggestions of where to buy a new TimeMachine drive? I looked on macconection.com, and prices looked reasonable there.
I got my Seagate from Amazon, but Best Buy, BJ's, and others have good prices, too. If there's a decent local store that seems to have good service, even if their prices are a bit higher, it might be worthwhile buying locally.
    5. Do you know when 10.5 became became available? The drives on macconnection.com have a two year warantee. So, it’s possible that when I figure where/when I bought the drive, I could have a refund. Since I can’t erase the drive in it’s current state, however, it’s unlikely that I’ll invoke this option.
No, I don't. 18 months to a couple of years would be my SWAG (Scientific Wild A.s.s. Guess). But the warranty is probably from the date you bought it, anyway.
    Good luck!
