The hard drive has a total size of 250 gb but time machine gives wrong size of 750 gb??
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "backupd" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. Post the messages from the last backup, beginning with "Starting standard backup."
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

How to stop time machine from backing up encrypted lion partition
I am using 10.6.8 but I created a Lion partition on the same disk. I am trying out Lion and I do not want Time Machine to back it up. I was able to exclude the Lion volume until I encrypted the Lion partition using Filevault 2. Now when I'm using Snow Leopard, there doesn't seem to be a way of preventing Time Machine from backing up the Lion partition. Am I missing something?
The FAQ says Snow Leopard can't read the Filevault 2 disk which seems to imply I won't be able to keep Time Machine from backing up the Lion partition. That seems wrong. How can Snow Leopard's Time Machine see the disk to back it up, but can't see it to exclude from backup?

Can I use time machine to revert to Mountain Lion from Maverick?
In spite of everyone saying how great Maverick is, I have poblems with slow operation, hard to use mail addresses, problems with iPhoto, etc. So I want to go back to Mountain Lion. Can I use Time Machine to restore back before Maverick was installed?
Only if you have a full backup of Mountain Lion on your Time Machine backup drive. Then you can boot to the Recovery HD that is on the Time Machine backup drive, erase your drive, then do a full Mountain Lion restore. But if you have already used Time Machine to backup your Mountain Lion system, then this won't work. You will need to erase the drive and reinstall Mountain Lion separately. Then you can restore your Home folder from the Time Machine backup.
Or you can avoid all the above by trying to fix the problems with your Mavericks system. You will need to upgrade iPhoto.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo). -

How do I make a back up on Time Machine before upgrading to Mountain Lion?

Thanks!Connect an external drive to your Mac. Open Disk Utility, it is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder, and see if the external is formated Mac Extended (Journaled) and if it is not you can either use the Partition tab to Re-partition it as one partition and format it Mac Extended (Journaled) or you can use the Erase tab to Erase the drive and format it the Mac format. Name it anything you like.
Once that is done close Disk Utility and open System Preferences and go to the Time Machine Applet. Once that is open, If OS X doesn't ask you if you want to use that external as a TM backup disk, select "SelectBackup Disk" and select that external as a place to store backups. Then move the slider from Off to On and then TM will start the process of making a backup of your system. Once it is finished I suggest you turn it back off. -

I have OSX Lion and have been backing up to Time Machine, I now want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard (not from backup), but can I restore my data (iTunes Library, Photo's, files etc.) to Snow Leopard from a Time Machine backup made on OSX Lion?
Thanks.You should be able to restore iTunes and iPhoto files if the Lion system was running the same version of those applications that you'll have on the Snow Leopard system. However, you won't be able to restore files for applications like Mail, Address Book, or Safari, as the versions of those won't match.

But I think it cannot be related to not being a multiple of 512.
As when I devide the number of bytes 3.000.592.982.016 by 512 is equals 5860533168.

Will Time Machine backup of SL erase Lion at the same time?
I normally wait before downloading new OSX's from Apple, but didn't this time and regret it. Before installing Lion, I did a Time Machine backup of my iMac. My question is: how do I restore my iMac to that last backup with Snow Leopard? I want Lion off my iMac (for now), but I DON'T want to have to reinstall all my applications, lose my iTunes Library, lose my iPhoto and Aperture libraries or all of the other applications I have. So - do I load the Snow Leopard disc.. erase my hard drive, reinstall Snow Leopard then restore from Time Machine, or can I just select the last restore from Time Machine and it will delete Lion for me? The reason I ask is because I want my internet back without having to manually reconnect through Network Preferences every 10 minutes. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
Restore to a multiple disk setup should work fine. But there are as always some tricks to it.

I would also recommend spending a few dollars and buy CCC or superduper. Make a backup of each drive. These 3rd party backup programs are more flexible and you can create direct images of the drives. It makes recovery a much much easier process.
If it is a Mac Pro put in another disk for TM backups and use a USB or even esata card and external sata drive for backups using CCC. Doing it that way you can make a bootable image of your main drive. -
Time machine backup file size larger than size of backup hard drive. Is something wrong?
My 3 TB external hard drive (My Book Studio) is my Time Machine drive. But Finder says that backup.backupdb is 6.9 TB in size, or over twice the drive's capacity. Should I assume that the drive is corrupt or failing and that I can't rely on Time Machine now? Or is Finder measuring something other than the actual size of the file...?
I have this problem as well. I have two laptops backed up to the same external hard drive, and I would like to move just one of the laptop's backups to a new drive. The partition for both is 600GB, but the size of one laptop's backup folder is 850GB and for the other it is 3.3TB.
I would like to know the actual size of each laptop's backup folder. Getting the size of the volume is not useful because I need to know the sizes of the two individual backup folders within it. -
Time Machine gives different full backup sizes
After this recent Time Machine update I am no longer able to back up. When Time Machine computes the backup it tells me that it is 320GB, which is larger than my backup drive, so it can't back up. However, when I go into the Time Machine preferences it computes the estimated backup size as 272.52GB. Before this Time Machine update was applied my backups were happening with no issues.

It may be a combination of things: the drive is clearly too small; while it varies widely depending on how you use your Mac, our general "rule of thumb" is that TM needs at least twice the space of the data it's backing-up.
If you're like most of us, the amount of data on your system has been growing.
And apparently Time Machine is doing a full backup, so it just got beyond the capacity of the disk to hold it all.
Looks like I need a larger Time Machine disk.

Can I use time machine to get rid of Lion?
Lion has been a total disaster for my iMac. After installation, everything went very buggy very quickly. Now it is freezing every few minutes. I just want rid of it. Can I use time machine to restore the old system? If so, how? Will my files be OK? thanks.

Back to Snow Leopard from Lion install method
Read and print out these instructions, your computer is going to be offline and you wil be cutoff from help until your machine is restored.
Clear the Desktop, Downloads and Trash of anything you wish to keep by placing their files in the respective Documents, Music, Pictures, Movie folders.
Disconnect other drives except the sole backup drive.
Backup ALL your Users folders (Documents, Pictures, Movies, Music etc) manually (drag and drop methods) to a (not TimeMachine) external powered drive (HFS+ journaled formatted in Disk Utility) and disconnect, your going to be wiping the entire boot disk of ALL DATA.
(warning, everything will be gone and not recovered, OS, programs, files, Windows etc all gone.)
Note: You might want to hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk and use Disk Utility to format the new blank external drive instead of using OS X Lion if that's hosed. Then reboot into Lion and copy files, may be safer that way.
Here we go!
Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk that comes with your computer and second screen in just STOP there, don't install OS X yet.
Look at the Utilities Menu for Disk Utility.
On the left is the name of your hard drive maker, click it and Erase (format HFS+ Journaled), give it the same drive name as before, and click Erase...
(note: if you want to "scrub" the drive of old files that haven't been overwritten yet, then use the Security Option > Zero Erase, takes a lot longer)
This should wipe the drive of ALL partitions (GUID, OS X and 10.7 Recovery, Windows if present)
When it's done, quit and install OS X 10.6. Then install all your programs from fresh sources and validate/update.
When you setup a first account, use the same user name as before, this way you can simply drag and drop the content of your previous Users folders from the external drive right back into the new Users folders and everything should work peachy. Links in iTunes to music, playlists and iPhoto links especially.
Update OS X to 10.6.8 using the Combo Update for best results.

(Note: If your original machine had 10.5 and you want the free iLife that comes with the disks with the computer, then you'll have to install 10.5 first using the same c boot/erase/format methods as above, then update to 10.6 via the disk, then Combo Update 10.6.8)
Final step optional but highly recommended.
A lot of people use a Carbon Copy Clone of their boot drive to a new HFS+Journaled external drive (used only for this purpose) as a "hold the option key" bootable backup in case something goes wrong with their boot drive or need to restore to a previous OS X version.. (in addition to TimeMachine drive for more immediate backups.)
It's not advised to have a Bootable Clone and a TimeMachine partition on the same external drive, as two drives gives hardware protection in case one fails. -
How do I set up my Time Machine and Mac Mini with Lion Server so i have one wifi loop in the house?

So I have had a Time Machine wifi loop at the house for approx. 6 years. I run two Macbooks, 2 iPhones, 2 iTouch and a Samsung Smart Blueray on the loop.
I just bought a Mac Mini with Lion Server. When setting it up I'm not sure what or how I managed to do, but I now have 2 wifi loops, one doesn't lock and niether will support the Samsung BlueRay. Also, each time I want to go online with one of the other Mac devices i have to relog into the wifi loop.
Can someone please walk me through the fix. The mac Mini is plugged straight into the Time Machine to recevie its internet connection.

JohnYou often see this limit of 10 clients in wireless hotspots but I have yet to see it in an adsl modem.. most strange way to pay for a service that is really irrelevant how many clients you use.
Have a go .. I recently setup a TC to help a guy run his Roku.. and this setup worked well.. I have no idea if it can work in your case.
Lets say the IP you get is 192.168.2.1-10 .. doesn't matter what it really is. And the adsl modem is 192.168.2.254
(Assuming they are private addresses.. if they are public IP you can just use the DHCP and NAT. )
But go to the airport utility.. I think you need to run v5 at least to change DNS.. but you can do the same thing in v6 using static but no dns changes.
Now you set the IP of the TC manually.. This address might need to be in the dhcp range of the modem to work. You can set the DNS to same IP as the router address.. ie home address of the modem. Or you can use another DNS.. whatever you like.
Then set DHCP for clients that will join.. this can then expand the scope of addresses..
It worked without a NAT error.. although I am not sure exactly how.. on paper it should not be able to work but did.. have a go.. otherwise there is perhaps another way.. but it is complicated.
Give us an example from a computer plugged into the modem of what IP .. subnet mask .. Gateway and DNS you get. Then I can fine tune the values for it. -
Time Machine restored wrong data
OK - the history here is the previous Macbook was replaced because of system problems, including many files with FUTURE dates (eg. 2037). Apple store agreed after repeated issues, they would replace the machine. We did a final time machine/capsule backup before taking it in.
Got the new Macbook and ran the Migration assistant to restore all data from the time capsule.
The data was not correct, and I suspect it was something to do with the future dates.
I can open the sparse bundle backup file and see the correct backup information, but I have no option when I open Time Machine to pick ANY previous backups.
This all started with Macbook problem, and I'm really thinking they should figure this out - but assuming they wont, I'm looking for suggestions on how to safely get the 'real' information recovered from Time Capsule.

Possibly. Migration Assistant uses the most recent backup, so if the dates were wrong, you may have gotten the wrong data.
You should be able to see the other backups -- but you may need to start from a different user account (Migration Assistant creates a new account, and the transferred account may not have permission to the backups. See Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
A better option may be to do a full system restore, from a different backup. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions. You'll want to pick a backup from before the dates went wrong. -
Why does Time Machine forget "everything" after Mountain Lion update?
After updating to Mountain Lion (from Snow Leopard), I fired up my trusty external hard drive which contains my Time Machine backups (and nothing else) - of course I had run a backup right before upgrading to be sure. Two things are deeply disturbing: 1) The drive keeps on "rattling" as if a process is constantly reading or writing to it - even with Time Machine "OFF". Why? I (tried to) explicitly disable(d) Spotlight searching that drive, and nothing else should be accessing it! (I wish there was a way to simply turn Spotlight OFF for a while - I suspect it of a lot of crashes I experience).
Anyway, even more disturbing: Opening the System Preference Panel and sliding Time Machine to "On", it claims there is NO backup at all! Oldest backup: "NONE". Latest backup: "NONE". This is B.S.! BTW, opening the "Time Machine" app proper shows all the recent backups, so they are still there. So why doesn't the Time Machine Preference Panel not recognize them? Under these circumstances, is it safe to enable backups??? I am very afraid that if I let Time Machine proceed, it will try to create a full new backup, perhaps overriding all the snapshots from the past that are still stored on that disk. For one, even at 1 TB, my disk is not big enough to take another full backup on top of what's already stored on there. Any advice (other than "buy another hard disk just to be safe")?

I am grateful for your advice and encouraging words, but I am (and remain) at my wit's ends as far as Time Machine is concerned. While I'm sure 99.99% of Mac users have no problem, there must be SOMETHING idiosyncratic about my own setup that has consistently crashed TM in the past, and now (after upgrading to Mountain Lion), it simply refuses to work EVER. Mind you, I'm NOT a "hacker" who installs non-standard software or likes to poke around in the Kernel.
Below is a shortened version of the Console output during my latest attempt - after 3 tries (after running disk utility to repair my permissions and check the hard drive), it never makes it beyond about 4 Gb before crashing. (And, what's worse, if I don't immediately react, TM very often crashes the whole computer to the point where NOTHING works anymore - requiring a restart. Even with Mountain Lion).
