Time Machine hangs and prevents application and machine shut down

I've been having problems with my Time Machine over the last few weeks and seem completely unable to fix it.
When time machine starts to back up my machine, it hangs (the clock icon in the top right hand corner of the screen spins, but the backup disk is not being accessed and currently Time Machine shows no backup in the last five days). Once it has hung, various applications start to behave oddly and generally I am unable to shut them down, even via force quit.
Eventually when I try restarting the machine, it clears everything from the screen except the desktop background and then refuses to go any further.
Through tinkering I think the problem is the Time Machine disk, but I've run Disk Utility on it, and it says that the drive is ok. At one stage I deleted the Time Machine backup and started again, which was fine for a week, but now I've got the same problems again.
I do get these messages in console:

Any ideas? I'm getting very frustrated by all of this.
Thanks

It's possible the drive is beginning to fail. They are mechanical beasts, after all, with moving parts and bearings, and don't last forever, and they do fail without a complete crash. You might try stopping TM, then using Disk Utility to +Erase Free Space+ on it, just to see if DU can write to the unused part successfully. Passing isn't necessarily a clean bill of health, but a failure would be a clear sign.

First, exclude your TM drive from any anti-virus scanning, and from Spotlight, at least temporarily (System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy).
None of the posted messages have anything to do with Time Machine backups, except the last few seem to indicate that you may have been trying to do something with the Finder on the TM disk. Normally, you can look, but do not touch any of TM's files. But you do seem to have a corrupt cache you might want to investigate.
Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to one of the problem backups, then copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).
Or, if you'd rather use Console, filter for the backupd process to get the TM backup messages.

  • My Mountain Lion OSX is very slow and some of my applications get hang and also shutting down is slow

I have noted after install of Mountain Lion OSX my system and aplication opening has slow

Open Console.app by clicking on Spotlight in the top-right of the screen and typing 'Console', then press 'return.
Look in the sidebar under 'FILES' for 'System Log' and click on it.
Click the 'Clear Display' icon in the taskbar, and then 'Insert Marker'. Make a note of the time on the marker.
Press the power button once to display the shutdown window. Make sure 'Reopen Windows when logging back in' is selected. Shutdown the computer (not 'Restart').
When the computer is off, press the power button again and log in. The Console window should be at the front of your screen. Skim through the messages and look for any obvious hangs or repeated messages.

  • My MacBookPro (mid 2012) will not complete the boot process. Yosemite's progress widget gets about 1/3 to 1/2 way across when the logo disappears and the screen goes all white for 10-15 secs or so, then the machine shuts down and restarts.

My MacBookPro (mid 2012) will not complete the boot process. Yosemite's progress widget gets about 1/3 to 1/2 way across when the logo disappears and the screen goes all white for 10-15 secs, then the machine shuts down and restarts. This sequence will repeat seemingly forever unless I shut it down manually.
I upgraded to Yosemite from Mountain Lion a couple months ago, skipping Maverick completely, and I've done any associated updates that Apple told me about. I don't recall which version of Yosemite I have, but I'm sure it is the "latest and greatest".
I've tried re-starting in Safe Mode / Safe Boot and that does the same thing as described above except without the endless restarts. Instead of restarting at some point, SafeBoot proceeds to the white screen and then it hangs until I restart it manually. (I've waited as long os 20-30 minutes with no response).
When I tried the option-command-p-r key combo I never get any chimes or other noises besides the original 1 time boot sound that you would expect to get when starting up a macbook pro.
I was using the mac quite normally (meaning I was doing work I normally do on it and there was no indication of anything wrong) immediately prior to this happening.
The machine is BootCamp(ed) with Windows 8.1 which I use from a VMWare virtual machine instead of natively so that I can have both OSes running at the same time. I also think this is unrelated to my problem. I have been using this setup for more than 2 years.
My upgrade to Yosemite was uneventful and I thought it went well and was very smooth. I don't want to lead attention away from Yosemite, but at this point my problem does not seem related to the upgrade.
    Any help is appreciated.

Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

Hi, i cannot shut down my mac, and there is several times lagging, hanging, and auto restart. what should I do ?

Hold the power button till it shuts off (10 seconds or so)
    Then try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery you should not remove yourself.
You can also try a pram reset, which has a link at the bottom of the page of the first link above.

Your iPHone is designed by intention to shut off when there is a reason for the softwarer to believe that danger is immenent to the hardware. This can occurr if the software is running applications that have been corrupted due to all types of different scenarios. My best advice to you would be to restore your device back to default manufactures settings and do NOT restore the current backup of the IOS program currently running.
If this corrects the problem with your device intermittently restarting you will then know you have had applications there were corrupted on your device. Once you are convinced there are no issues with the hardware of your device you then are free to begin downloading software apps that were earlier on the device.
    Good luck.

I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?

Thank you for your reply BDAqua.
Yes I ran short and the Extended Test. All pass. One of the first things I did is Safe Boot several times I also repaired permissions. Safe boot takes no longer than before the crashes and as long as I stay in safe boot mode it won't crash. What does that mean?I also ran MacJanitor and removed the SCCUZI card Apple put in when I bought the G4 as well as an M-Audio Delta 66 card which I do not use (both) anymore. I also started up on an external firewire drive 10.4.6. It also (crashes) does the same thing.
I was hoping somebody understands the crash report I enclosed? Isn't that suppose to say what went wrong?
Thank you again for your input BDAqua

I am trying to use the trial creative cloud software on a PC windows 8.1 - I've downloaded and removed Photoshop CC 2014 two times - every time I open the file it says there is a problem and it shuts down and closes. I can open indesign and maybe other apps but photoshop no. Any ideas?

I don't think I can access the crash report? Excuse the ignorant questions I'm about to make am a relative tech novice.
Soo - as mentioned every time I open photoshop it crashes - it just says there's an error and the program will shut down and if there's a solution windows will notify me. Then nothing...
I've tried to look in photoshop files for the detailed crash report & the system event viewer but cannot find a file with those names. I've also looked in the windows files for files with those names but cannot find them either - so I don't know where to look.
    Any guidance would be great.

Hi can anyone please help. My I Phone is in recovery mode. I have loads of pics and vids including my little girl counting to ten for the first time.
Can I recover these files or have I lost them? I lost the phone last week and it was returned working but with an update to install I did this and it shut down.
If anyone can please help I would be eternally in your debt I have loads of sentimental pctures in here but cant get to them.

Sorry, but if it's in recovery mode, anything on the phone is already gone. If you had PhotoStream turned on, hopefully the photos will still be out there.
You have no choice at this point but to restore from your last backup.

    This is what worked:

  • I receive an error and iTunes shuts down every time I try to sync my iPhone

Every time I try to sync my iPhone, I receive an error and iTunes shuts down. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes at least 3 different times and still no luck. Any suggestions please.

Thanks for the answer. The sync process goes well until the last step,(5th) when iTunes try to syncing pictures. At that point I got an error message telling me that iTunes doesen’t work properly. “Windows tries to find a solution to the problem” ...and then the program shuts down. I remember that I tried to include videos in the Photo tab just before it all happend, so I think that is the issue here.
The problem is that i dont know how to uncheck include videos option since the program stops working. Is it something i can do without having my iPhone connected? I Saw that some have installed older versions of iTunes to go around the problem and if that solves it all, at least for now... where can I download it?
    Thanx in advance. M
