Time Machine HDD Failure

My external hard drive with all my Time Machine backups has failed, but is running in a safe mode for now.
How do I transfer all my backups to another hard drive? A simple copy and paste of all the backup files/folders won't work, is there a way round this?

Amen. Which is why I tried to steer Scruffy Doo away from making a copy by not getting into using the Restore function of Disk Utility. Sorry for omitting that Scruffy Doo but I'm concerned about your back up integrity. You can easily replace the back up now while your main disk in healthy. Should your main disk go down you'll be in big trouble if you find that you don't have a reliable back up.
So try to do a +Repair Disk+ (not permissions) via Disk Utility. You may have to run it more than once.
Disk Utility won't work in this case. When the disk is marked as read-only, it means that the OS already tried to repair the disk with fsck. The Repair Disk in Disk Utility is just a graphical interface for fsck.
If it still doesn't fix it, and you already have a copy of DiskWarrior 4.1.1, it might be able to fix it, but it's not likely, so not worth spending the $100 just for this.
DiskWarrior can easily repair a disk in this state and recognizes and repairs the directory hard links. I just didn't mention it by name because it's not worth spending money to repair a back up unless it's the only remaining copy of your data.
You might be able to reformat the disk and continue using it, but the disk is probably failing.
Actually, you'll probably be able to reformat the disk and use it. Just because Disk Utility/fsck can't repair a disk doesn't mean that it's failing. It just means that the disk directory can't be repaired but isn't in such bad shape that the disk won't mount. Although, admittedly, the early symptom of a failing drive can be directory damage.

  • Time Machine backup failure on case-sensitive disk?

    Hello,
I just started getting a Time Machine backup failure error that says "A disk you are backing up is case-sensitive, but the backup disk is not."
None of my external disks have changed and I've not added any new ones.
The error seems to be stemming from the fact that I'm logged in as multiple users on my system, all with MobileMe accounts. When I "get info" on all mounted disks, the only ones that are reporting "Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)" are the mounted iDisks from the other use accounts that I'm currently logged in as.
Does this mean I cannot use Time Machine while logged in as multiple users, all with the iDisks mounted? That would be a major annoyance to either have to log out/log in to each user as I need them or to disable iDisk syncing in my MobileMe prefs.
    Regards,
    Terry

That seems odd to me; my iDisk shows WebDAV as the format and doesn't interfere with backups, but I don't have any other users' iDisks, either.
Another possibility would be to reformat your TM drive as case-sensitive. That would, of course, erase all your backups so TM would start over from scratch, and some possible troubles when restoring (see the pink box in #5 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for details); but you'd no longer have the backup problem.

  • Deleting files on Time Machine HDD

I have a folder containing 2GB or more of music that I don't need backed up any longer. How can I free up the space on my Time Machine HDD and delete this folder?
Does Time Machine just reference this folder once or does it continuously make back ups of your system? I can go back in to the Time Machine drive and find this folder listed for every back up ever made by Time Machine.
What about all the huge bit torrent files I've downloaded? How can I cherry pick and delete them off Time Machine's HDD? I'd like to have more than 12GB left on my 500GB back up drive!

Don't do it manually. I wouldn't even know how, since Time Machine is using multi-linking to make one copy of a file appear to be in multiple date/time archive folders. So if a file never changed during the whole time you have been using Time Machine, it should only be stored once. But if you look in your archive using Finder, it appears to be in every one of your date/time archive folders.
The way to do what you want is through the Time Machine +flying through space+ interface.
Open a Finder window, then go into Time Machine. In the cool interface, navigate to the folder or file you want to eliminate from your backup. Right (Control) click on it and select +Delete All Backups of "<name of the item>"+.

Hello, it's great you have a backup, but 10.6 should just Install 10.6 system files over the top of 10.5 system files, & leave all your data intact on the drive.

I had experienced the similar problem when I first upgraded to Leopard. The problem was caused by spotlight indexing my hard drive and at the same time Time Machine was trying to backup the spotlight index file. The solution was to temporary exclude most of the documents (I have a lot of pdf files) from spotlight and let it runs through the indexing process before starting Time Machine.
I don't know if my experience help you or not but it might be something worth looking into.
    Good luck.

I'm not familiar with the server product, but the actual backup process should be the same as on the client version.
On some occasions, a device requests an admin username and password whilst time machine is backing up.
Does it say Admin password, or could it be a password for the backup device?

    Yes, that's the "bottom line."
Could this be fixed by running a full backup as admin so that time machine doesn't have to backup these inaccessible files (to normal users) anymore?
No.  However a backup runs, it runs as the root user, so has access to everything.

  • Time Machine backup failure on 60Gb iPhoto Library on second partition

I had 1 partition on my Macbook Pro (2010). I have several users on the mac and I use fast switching for them. All users use same iPhoto Library and iTunes Media - they are situation in a separate folder in my partition root. My Time Capsule was setup to backup everything and it actually did it well.
Sometime ago I started to find a solution to avoid file permission problem - when different users add files/photos, they have permission to delete/change for them only. This caused some unwanted behavior. I read a lot of forums and basically the most appropriate solution is to create a separate partition on the same HDD and remove checkbox on it to support "Owner".
So I did it - created new partition. Then I moved iTunes and iPhoto to new partition and then I started backup again. Unfortunately, it failed. It took me 2 days to understand that it actually fails on iPhoto Library - all other staff works ok. But as soon as I allow to backup iPhoto Library, it starts backing up and shows some progress, but when 1-2 Gb (or sometimes 100-500 MB) complete it shows that "Backup failed - ... this might be temporary problem..".
I did not manage to resolve this - so I removed partition and reverted everything back by copying iTunes library and iPhoto library to external drive and then back after removing second partition. When I enabled backing up, everything worked great again - no problem.
So here is the question - why backup failed on iPhoto library when it was on second partition? Are the any ideas?

Move/backup/move back/backup did not fix the problem. TM still didn't backup the missing directories.
I was finally able to convince TM to do the right thing by following the procedure described here:
    http://www.nzmac.com/quick-tips/time-machine/how-do-i-reset-time-machine.html
This isn't a solution because I still don't know what caused TM to think that it backed up something that it didn't back up. But the article was suggested by a friend of mine in IT who also owns a few Macs. After following the procedure and running TM again I can see all of the previously missing files backed up on the ext drive. I also used BackupLoupe (http://www.soma-zone.com/BackupLoupe/) to browse the files that were actually copied by the last backup. I see that TM copied the directories that I knew were missing and two other directories that I did not know were missing.
At this point I think my TM backup is complete. But now I'm on the lookout for a better backup solution. Until I find it I'll need to periodically compare backup sizes to make sure that TM keeps doing its job.

  • Time Machine index failures and external drives

    Greetings,
I have been running into a number of failures with Time Machine on an Intel Core i7 iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.4. The external hard drive is an iOmega "eGo" 2 TB desktop drive connected with USB 2.0. I have used this kind of hard drive before for TIme Machine successfully, on this machine which has as far as I know always run Snow Leopard.
Unfortunately, I cannot put a date or event to when these Time Machine errors began (whether coincident with an OS upgrade or what); the iMac belongs to my research group, and is located in a meeting room where it is used by several people. I'd estimate the TM failures began maybe 3 months ago, after the drive and Time Machine having worked fine for several months before then.
I've already used Disk Utility to repair and/or re-format (remake single partition) the external drive, and checked the iMac's HD for errors. The external is a brand-new drive; I just recently exchanged the previous same-model drive for a replacement, since the previous one failed some kind of diagnostics they performed back at the shop (I don't know what the problem was, there). The first eGo drive was the one that worked for a while with Time Machine. Since I replaced it with a new one, TM has never successfully completed a back-up.
Time Machine's error message is the usual "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk" along with the "The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk." that comes up when I click for more info in the control panel. Below, I've also copied typical outputs from "Time Machine Buddy" and from "system.log" read in Console.
I've tried working through some of the suggested actions at http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/ (specifically: "full reset," item A4; suggestions at the bottom of D4; and C3), with no luck so far. I also tried using a different external drive (an OWC Mercury Elite Pro 2TB), and tried it connected either with USB 2.0 (a new cable) or FireWire 800; both ways it returned the same "indexing a file failed"-type messages in the TM Buddy and system.log.
    Any further suggestions are appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hello again,
I ran the 10.6.4 Combo update installer, and followed up with Repair Permissions. There was one issue in the latter that I was curious about:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I'm guessing that's not really related. In any case, I started running a new initial backup in TM which got hung up with the following:

Currently, TM is attempting to (resume?) back up again. Would you suggest leaving it alone, or proceeding next with a re-install of Snow Leopard from the install DVD (followed by 10.6.4 again)?
    Thanks again!

  • Time machine disk failure after closing laptop lid

I have a Seagate 1.5 TB disk that I'm using for a time machine backup (USB).  For a long time, I had the disk formatted wrong and had this problem, but I re-formatted it (per Apple's instructions) and have been trying again.  Now, with it correctly formatted, I still have the same problem.
This is a laptop, so I don't leave the Time Machine application on, nor do I leave the TM disk connected all the time.  If I plug in the drive, run TM, and eject the disk before closing the laptop lid, I do not have any issues.  If, however, the laptop lid is shut at any point after TM completes, I have can never seem to eject nor unmount the TM disk.  For example, last night I ran TM and left the machine open overnight.  In the morning, the machine was used and shut per usual routine, except the drive was still connected.  Now there is a critical failure on the drive (Disk Utility can do nothing to repair the drive and suggests re-formatting).  Last night, the computer was plugged in and went to sleep after 15 minutes.  I have changed no settings regarding what the computer does on lid shutdown.
What used to work to eject/unmount the drive is to shutdown the computer.  Then I would unplug the drive before re-starting.  Now, however, I had errors with the drive (Disk Utility) and went ahead with a force eject.  That worked, and the drive still had errors that Disk Utility could not address.
I have a Macbook Pro (13-inch, mid 2012) running Mac OS X Version 10.9.2 (13C64); processor 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory.  My main drive is 750 GB (Macintosh HD).  I also backup a firewire 400 drive to this TM drive, capacity 250 GB.
So, first question: why is this happening over and over and over?  Is there anything I can do, apart from immediate removal of the TM drive after the backup completes, to ensure that it doesn't happen in the future?  Should I be concerned that the disk is failing mechanically?
    Thanks

I don't think you quite understand how Time Machine really works. But then hardly anyone does. Time Machine is intended to be left enabled always whether a backup drive is connected or not. What Time Machine cannot handle properly is a situation where the backup drive loses power for whatever reason. Time Machine treats this, as does the OS, as an improper disconnect of an external drive without being properly ejected. This in turn throws Time Machine a little bit of a loop.
For you I would suggest not using Time Machine. Instead use a third-party backup utility that you can either schedule or run manually as you wish. They will work with the same drive you have used for Time Machine, but you will need to first erase the Time Machine drive using Disk Utility. Please DO NOT try dragging the Time Machine backups to the Trash.
Here are some good backup utilities you can try:
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate. Each one can be used for a trial period. No need to pay for one until you've decided on which one you like best. I, for example, use Carbon Copy Cloner but please don't take that as a recommendation over the others. It's just my preference. All can be operated manually or can be set up to backup on a schedule you determine. Some can even be set up to backup as soon as the backup drive is connected.

  • I can't access to time machine hdd in windows

hi, guys...how u all. Recently i used my external 2tb hdd as a time machine backup....For backup first i format it then backup my mac. Now, when i connect it to my pc (windows), the hdd doesn't show up. Hope i will get a solution from u guys.
    Cheers

Per HT1427: Setting up Time Machine backups using an external drive
Note: Every available drive that can be used to store backups is listed. If you’ve partitioned a drive, the available partitions are listed. Time Machine can’t backup to an external drive that's connected to an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or a drive formatted for Microsoft Windows (NTFS or FAT format).  If you select an NTFS or FAT-formatted drive, Time Machine prompts you to reformat the drive. Choose a different drive or reformat the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. Because reformatting erases any files on the drive, only do this if you no longer need the files or if you have copies of them on a different drive.
The most common format for a Time Machine backup drive is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  format, but Time Machine also supports Mac OS Extended (Case sensitive, Journaled) and XSan formats.

  • Advice on Time Machine HDD

    Hi,
Does anyone have any experience with this Toshiba external HDD?
    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/2145/1412/-/3594937/Toshiba-PX1394U-3G50-500GB-USB- 2-0-3-5-External-Hard-Drive/Product.html?searchtype=genre
Can I pretty much just use any USB HDD for time machine?
And what is the significance of external HDD's that carry the "ready for mac" slogan?
    Thanks in advance!

Can I pretty much just use any USB HDD for time machine?
Yes. Just check reviews to see what they are like. Google the drive name with the word review after it and see what happens.
I got a Western Digital My Book studio that was ready for mac. I haven't notice any difference with other drives. I think it means the drive is reformatted to HFS+
If you find a good drive, don't ignore it because it is not ready for mac. Any usb or firewire drive should work.

  • Ridiculous & grotesque HD crash and Time Machine restore failure!  Help?

Trying to make this short. iMac 24" 2009 2.66GHz, 640GB HD, NVIDIA 9400, 4GB ram.
Bought used, installed operating sys from disks, then upgraded to Snow Leopard. All was working fine. Set up Time Machine and it made several backups over two days.
Tonight, for reasons unknown, came into office and screen was on (instead of asleep or screen saver) and fan going 1000 MPH--LOUD!
Cut it off, rebooted, would not boot. Gave me "No bootable device" msg. Booted with OSX 10.5 disk, did UTILITIES/RESTORE FROM BACKUP, restored from Time Machine.
When it rebooted, the gray apple showed up and seconds late a gray shade descended and a black box in center of screen says "You need to restart your computer. Hold down power button until it's off, then press powerbutton again." Says this in 5 languages.
So I did, and the box keeps coming back. Repeatedly.
So then I reboot from OSX 10.5 disk again, go to UTILITIES/RESTORE FROM BACKUP, and restore from ANOTHER Time Machine backup from the iMac 24" I'm replacing, also Snow Leopard updated.
Same result. Black box, "You need to reboot," etc.
***? Am I missing a key step in the full restore? Please advise ASAP as this is driving me batty. not only do I not know what went wrong in the first place (somewhere early on I ran disk utility and did all 4 of the repair/verify options there; all said HD was fine), I have no clue why Time Machine won't restore like I assume it's supposed to!
Please help me before I kill again!

My Mac wouldn't boot. Since I had my trusty Time Machine Backup I formatted the drive and tried to use Migration Assistant to use Time Machine Backup to restore everything but when I tried the backup had an error. Is there anything I can do to restore my mac?
You do not use migration assistant to restore from a TM drive.
You boot into your Leopard DVD and use it to restore from TM drive.
You do not need to do anything with your internal drive. Just follow the instructions.

  • Migration assistent and built out time machine hdd

    Hi all,
my MacBook Pro got stolen and miraculously my time machine died at the same time. I got out the hard drive and put it in a casing with firewire.
My problem is: I try to run Migration Assistant on my new MacBook Pro, but when I select "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" it doesn't recognize my external disk and just shows a spinning wheel. The disk does show up in Finder.
I would appreciate if somebody could give me a hint on how I can best solve this, because I really need the backed up data.
    Thanks in advance,
    Roy

Time Machine uses a different method to manage its backups on a locally-mounted disk as on a network disk.I 'd first try mounting the "sparsebundle" volume on that disk.  If that doesn't let Time Machine access the saved data, then see item #18 of the Time Machine FAQ, particularly the third point under "How to".
