Time Machine: How do I restore data saved from an external HD that's dead

Hi,
I backup both my G5 and a connected external HD (Ryuk) - using Time Machine - to a backup HD (G5 Backup). Ryuk has just died. How do I restore Ryuk's contents from the G5 Backup - using Time Machine - temporarily to the G5 until I get a replacement drive for Ryuk [I need to access data that was stored on Ryuk and also want to have another complete copy].
Obviously when Ryuk was alive and well, I could see it in Finder when using Time Machine. Now it has ceased to be - Time Machine knows not of its presence. The G5 Backup contains all of Ryuk's data - neatly stored in many little folders - but I need these in one single incarnation of Ryuk before it popped its clogs.
So can this be done using Time Machine or is there some manual way of doing this?
Cheers, B.

Welcome to the discussions!
Since the external drive is non-operational, there are probably two possibilities here:
1) A electrical component in the external drive package failed, but the drive itself may be OK. To find out, the drive must be pulled and placed in a separate enclosure. If the drive itself is OK, you should be able to access the disk for your information.
2) If the drive itself failed, you will need to take the drive apart to access the actual disk. A data restoration service may possibly be able to retrieve the data from the disk by mounting it in another drive.
I would suggest that you start by consulting a professional data restoration service to explore your options. Check with the local computer repair shop, and if they don't perform this service, they will be able to refer you to a company that does.

  • How can I delete time machine backup folders moved into the trash from an external drive?

I made the mistake of moving Time Machine backup files into the trash, but I can't seem to delete them. I tried the option key when clicking on "Empty Trash" and "Secure Empty Trash" (before and after rebooting), but that always led to error 8003. The files won't allow me to change their name. Using approchaes to Terminal from three different Mac-related webpages also failed. I also tried Trash It, but it seemed to be making little progress after letting it run 48 hours. Any other suggestions before calling Apple?

Assuming these were not backups made over a network (thus not in a sparse bundle disk image), see #E6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
But any way you empty the trash on that disk/partition is probably going to take a very long time -- there's no doubt several hundred thousand files there, perhaps a million or more.
You may have to just erase the disk (with Disk Utility) and start over.
You really shouldn't have to delete Time Machine backups, as it will do that automatically when the destination gets full.  But if you really want to, see #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • HT201250 (1) Where is the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section)?

    1) Where do I find the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (as mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section in the Mac Support article "Mac Basics: Time Machine")?
    2) How would I restore e.g. a particular photo from a backup I made with Time Machine? I can see how this is done with Word documents, but can't see how to do it with photos?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    1. The Time Machine icon is on the menu bar.
    2. If you want to do that with individual photos, it's the same way as for documents. If you want to do it with iPhoto, you have to restore the whole iPhoto library, not only one photo

Just put in a new hard drive in a MacBook Pro.  I did a install of Snow Lepord.
How do I restore my Time Machine copy and can I use a older one?
Also,   lost my airport say can't get a IP address?  Has worked fine for the last year...?

Your best bet is probably to just do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  Note: that will restore the copy of OSX from your backups, overlaying the recent Snow Leopard installation.
That will let you select the backup you want to restore from; if you use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant, there's no choice -- the most recent one is used automatically.

  • How can i restore my iphone from a back up that is not listed on itunes

I need to restore my iPhone from a backup that is not listed in the itunes backup section. I only did it at 6 pm yesterday. Is there a way to find this backup on my computer and return it to the itunes backup list?

Normally backups are incremental, and you can only restore the latest. EXCEPT that a backup of an earlier version is archived, and the first backup of the new version is thus complete. You should be able to restore a 6.1.4 backup to iOS 7. Click the Restore Backup button. The dialog that comes up should have a dropdown where you can select a backup to restore. If the old one does not show up it cannot be restored.
However, since you appear to have a Mac, if you use Time Machine you can restore an earlier backup over the current one from your Time Machine history.
You can also back up to iCloud, even if you don't sync to it. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5262
One well hidden feature (for future use) is archiving backups. If you go to iTunes Preferences/Devices, right click on the current backup and choose "Archive". The next backup you make will be a competely new one, and the old one will be preserved and can be restored at any time.

  • How do I restore my Mac from an external recovery drive?

I cannot repair my main HD and is showing as gray in Disk utility. I have installed the OS and backed up my data on an external hard drive.
How do I reformat my HD using disk utility and restore the OS and my files from the external HD?

To move the iPhoto Library to the EHD just drag it from your Pictures folder to the EHD and let the copy complete.  Next launch iPhoto with the Option key held down till you get this window:
Next either select the library that's on the EHD if it's in the window or click on the Choose button, navigate to the EHD and select the library there.  Once you've confirmed that the EHD library is working correcly and all photos are there you can delete the library from your Pictures folder.
NOTE:  the EHD should be formatted as shown in this screenshot:
As for the other two items do a search as rkaufmann87 suggested.

  • Can Time Machine Be Used to Back Up Files from An External Hard Drive?

Please let me provide a little more information to clarify the question.
The hard drive on my computer is not large enough for all my photo and video files so I am planning to purchase a new external hard drive and move my "Pictures" and "Movies" folders to the new external hard drive as a way of freeing up space on my computer. A different external hard drive is now used for backup of the computer's hard drive.
My question is about how backups will be handled if I upgrade to Snow Leopard.
I understand that Time Machine will take the place of the software now being used to back up the MacHD, but back up is still needed for the photo and video files which would be moved off of the MacHD. Will Time Machine back up those files too? That is, will Time Machine back up specified folders which are being stored on one external hard drive and place the backups on a different external hard drive? And, will Time Machine do that in addition to backing up the MacHD? If so, are separate partitions needed for the MacHD and the Photo/Video backups, or will Time Machine put everything in the same partition?
Any advice and/or suggestions for handling this in would be most appreciated.
    Thanks for your help.

As captfred says, yes (as long as the drive is formatted for a Mac, not Windoze).

  • How to I recovery data history from my iPhone 5 that has been deleted ?

How can i recovery data history about Safari that was deleted from my iPhone 5 ? Can someone please help me.

When you connect your phone to PC, you may easily find that iTunes will automatically sync with your iPhone, and if you press "trust" this computer, the data including safari history may be automatically backed up in iTunes. That is to say, to recover the safari history, you just need to plug your phone in the PC you connected before. If you haven't connect your iPhone to any computer yet, may be you need some data recovery software for iPhone, because you have not backups, and you can only restore the deleted safari history directly from your phone,

  • Time Machine, how do I restore individual emails?

I would like to restore some emails i deleated but i have no idea how to do this. I don't seem to be able to open up the email backup to get at just the seperate emails. Should i restore the entire mail backup to lets say documents and then go get what i want?

Have the Mail.app active on your Desktop and then click the Dock's TM icon. This should bring up the TM browser with the Mail windows going back in time. Locate your missing Mail items and use Restore tab to recover them.

  • How to restore data files from a purchased app that isn't working

I recently had to reset my iPad after an ios7 problem with hyperlinks.  The reset fixed the hyperlink problem but now I can't open excel or word files created in a purchased application, productivity suite.  When I click on the file, it starts to open then switches back to the app icon.  Tried deleting and reinstalling the app and now all the files are gone from my iPad.  I backed up my iPad to my desktop before deleting the app but can't figure out how to restore just the files I need.

You should be able to mount the partition once you've loaded up the live CD. Just figure out which one it is by using
    fdisk -l
then mount it to /mnt or wherever you want it.
As for moving/saving them, I'm not entirely sure how to get them onto an external server. You might have to mount another partition in order to install any apps that you need to connect to an external server, but wait for someone who really knows to answer before you try it. If you're only talking about 4 or 5 MB, I would just mount a USB stick and dump them on there.

  • How do I restore all bookmarks from an external hard drive to a refreshed firefox?

I just "refreshed" Firefox and lost ALL of my passwords, even though the instructions said they would be saved. I have tried copying them from the Old Firefox Data folder and this does NOTHING. I have all of the data I need on an external hard drive and the ability to browse ( have already found my Firefox profile on the backup drive) and copy and paste data from that drive to my C drive. Please tell me EXACTLY how to transfer my bookmarks to the refreshed version of Firefox. I have YEARS of bookmarks that I CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE. I will be more than happy to simply restore my old profile even though that will slow Firefox down. That would be a small price to pay, but I must have the bookmarks back. Please help!

  • How do you restore the system from a backup file that you created previously

I have a notebook, Pavilion g6 - 1031TX running windows 7 64bit OS, and ran the backup utility a few weeks ago before running a full system recovery to attemp to fix an issue - this issue was fixed by warranty, and now I need to recover everything from the backup files, I have run the restore executable in the folder and it created another folder on my C: drive (System recovery files), how do I use this to restore the system to its previous state?

Unfortunately, the backup utilty portion of Recovery is not optimal solution for restoring many files.Unless you know exactly where they go you are stuck. Most of the important stuff such as photos, music, etc will be in the 'Users' folder under your user name. You will have to manually move them to correct location.
A better option in the future is Windows 7's backup app in Control Panel.
