    About 3 years old...pretty dated now I guess.  Am thinking I may just need to have it upgraded by a Mac tech.
    For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
    Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
    I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
    Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
    The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
    So you see what's going on here.
    I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
    They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
    With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
    For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

  • Time Machine - how it handles 'temporary' files

    I'm wondering how Time Machine handles 'temporary' files. By 'temporary' I mean the following. Supposing that I want to make some legitimate copies of some DVDs that I have made. I load up DVD1 and make a copy. I load up DVD2 and make a copy. I then delete DVD1 and DVD2 from my iMac as being no longer required. Now suppose Time Machine backed up before I did the delete. I think that I am right in saying that Time Machine will faithfully backup DVD1 and DVD2. After all, that is what it is supposed to do. But when I delete DVD1 and DVD2 from my iMac, Time Machine will not delete DVD1 and DVD2 from its' backup archive (again, because that is what it is supposed to do).
    So if I continue to make copies of DVDs..say 50 different ones...then that means that, my Time Machine backup will fill up with 50 x 4.7Gb (ie over 200Gb) of stuff that I don't want.
    Please understand that I don't have an issue with TM. Just want to understand the underlying mechanics a bit more. If my premise is correct then I guess the easiest option is to temporarily inhibit TM from doing its' backup while I am going through the load/copy/delete process. Only must remember to turn TM back on afterwards.
    Thanks

    no, this will not be this bad. TM constantly thins its backups. it keeps hourly backups for 24 hours and then deletes all but one of them. it keeps daily backups for 30 days and then deletes all but one for every week.
    so if you had copies of some DVDs on your drive for a very short time they will likely be gone from TM backups by tomorrow.
    if you still think some might be kept too long exclude the folder where you create them from TM backups. that's done by adding it to the TM exclusion list in TM system preferences->options.

  • How to delete all files on old mac?

    Just got a new Mac Dual Core Intel Xeon for my main work computer. Transferred files from old G5 Tower to this new computer. NOW, I need to erase all files on the old G5 so new user can start from scratch (reinstall software, delete all of my old files, etc.)
    What is the best way to do this so that all is erased properly and no settings carry over from my user account?
    THANKS in advance!

    This is how you can erase the HD inside your iMac
    -Insert the installation disc 1 and sthut down your Mac
    -Start your Mac again while holding down the C key
    -Now your Mac should boot from the CD, this can take some time.
    -After a while you will see a installation screen where you can chose a language.
    -Chose English and continue.
    -Then click some time's next and agree with the "Software Agreement".
    -Open Disk Utility. Top menu bar --> Utilities --> Open Disk Utility.
    -Select your hard disk in the list of disks and volumes on the left side
    -Go to the erase tab on the right side
    -Select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
    -Type "Macintosh HD"
    -Click to the options button
    -Select the option "Zero Out Data"
    -Press OK
    -Press the erase button
    -Wait until Disk Utility is ready and close it
    Now you can extit the installer or continue to install a clean OSX.

  • Time machine doesn't restore all files

    Recently I did a complete format and restore in Mavericks. Prior to moving to Mavericks I did a complete backup in Mountain Lion. After restoring from Time Machine many files were missing for Adobe CS4. When I look at the backup disc with Finder I see all the tiles that I need are listed but when I open Time Machine only a third are retrieveable. Without the files that are missing Photoshop CS4 will not run. How can I get the remaining files?

    OK, I;m back up and running. Found out that /Library/Applicaiton Support/Adobe was in two places. One was at the root level and another was in my account area. Each had similar files but the root one had the ones I was missing.

  • Time machine how to delete old records

    I have a volume for saving two machines with one of them on the network. Now, the machine with the drive on it has filled the entire space with the oldest record being around 12 months old whereas the other does not save any more. How can I delete the oldest records to get free space?

    Thanks. This is why I have a problem. If only one machine is being saved, Time Machine deletes the oldest stuff. In my case, there is a second machine that had stopped sving for whatever reason. Now, there is not enough space to resume the job. I would love to delete parts of the files of the other machine manually.

  • Time Machine no longer deletes older files to make room for new ones.

    I happened to notice today, that Time Machine is failing when attempting to do updates. I also notice that the HDD is just about full. Time machine should delete the oldest backups to make room for the new ones, but for some reason this isn't happening. I also tried deleting some of the older folders manually. It says it deletes them, the folder icon disappears, but the available space never increases. If I reboot, the folders I deleted are still there. Time Machine has no problem reading the files, but apparently can't delete them. Anyone have an idea as to what might be happening? It used to work, but now something is 'broken' and I have no idea where to start looking. I am running OSX 10.5.3.

    don't delete old backups from finder. delete them from TM interface. start TM and navigate to the backup you want to delete. click on the "gears" action button in finder's toolbar and select "delete backup". You'll have to enter your admin password. you might have to do this for several backups to clear up enough space. the deletion process can take a while so be patient. This is not guaranteed to make TM start deleting old backups by itself but it might.

  • How to delete all files and folders (with files) in IsolatedStorage.

    Hi awesome programmer:-) The code I have to clean up the local folder doesn't work properly so I won't even bother posting it here. I basically want to have a "master reset" option to remove all new created files and folder in the local folder.
    Can you give me simple code to remove all files/folder so the app goes back to the state it was when the user installed it for the first time? Thanks in advance. ps I were able to delete a directory(-ies) with this method:
    private async void DeleteDirectory(string directoryName)
    try
    var folder = await Windows.Storage.ApplicationData.Current.LocalFolder.GetFolderAsync(directoryName);
    if (folder != null)
    await folder.DeleteAsync();
    this.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(delegate()
    txtUpdateFeed.Text = "Folder < " + directoryName + " > deleted.";
    catch (Exception ex)
    this.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(delegate()
    txtUpdateFeed.Text = "Delete Directory << " + directoryName + " >> Error: " + ex.GetBaseException().Message.ToString();
    It seems to work, I have not tested with all conditions though. Anyway let me put up the code so you can see I have been trying: This is to delete everything but not all files are deleted:
    private void WipeAllData(bool bln)
    try
    txtUpdateFeed.Text = "Removing files...";
    if (bln)
    txtUpdateFeed.Text = "Removing folders...";
    //Delete videos directory
    DeleteDirectory("videos");
    //Delete pictures directory
    DeleteDirectory("pictures");
    txtUpdateFeed.Text = "Folders removed.";
    //Delete the rest of the files
    var iso = IsolatedStorageFile.GetUserStoreForApplication();
    foreach (string name in iso.GetFileNames())
    iso.DeleteFile(name);
    BtnWipeAllData.Content = "Wipe All Data";
    VideoCameraPowerValue = "on";
    BtnVideoCameraPower.Content = "Video Camera: ON";
    PhotoCameraPowerValue = "on";
    BtnPhotoCameraPower.Content = "Photo Camera: ON";
    txtUpdateFeed.Text = "Files removed successfully.";
    catch (Exception ex)
    MessageBox.Show("Wipe All Data Error:\n" + ex.Message.ToString());
    Why isn't all files being deleted?

    Hi Clint William Theron,
    Based on your descriptions, I know that when you run the above code, it does not delete all the files, then have you checked that which kinds of files or in which folder the files can not been deleted?
    Besides, if you want to let the app go back to the state it was when the user installed it for the first time, then an easy way is to uninstall and reinstall it.

  • Time Machine asked to delete all my backups

    Periodically, time machine tells me it's going to delete all my backups and create a new one. There is no way out of it. All I can say is "OK". But I'm wondering "Why?". Why is it doing that? Months of backup are gone with a single click.
    When my backup drive gets full, it warns me that it is going to delete my oldest backups. That's okay. That's expected. But twice now it has told me that it is going to delete my entire backup set and start over. Why? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening.
    Time machine has worked well for me for years. But suddenly, it's kind of useless.

  • How to delete all files on hard drive

    I am selling my iMac 27" and I want to deleted all of my files except for the IOS Lion.  Can anyone explain how to do this and get the hard drive back to a factory setting so that I can sell the computer and not have to worry about content being on the hard drive.  I have a external hard drive backup.
    Thank you,
    Scott

    Hi Scott,
    2 ways to go...
      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
          *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
    Or...
    Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
    In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.

  • How to delete all "files that cannot be found" files faster! Desperate!!

    Hey!! So for the past year and a half, i have had hundreds and hundreds of songs that read "----- file cannot be found--" due to me listening to cd's through itunes, without properly importing them. The result was every song file was saved without the song! So now after i imported the CD's correctly, i have quite a few duplicates of hundreds of songs, and the only way i find out which song is the duplicate is by manually trying to play the individual song. I wish to DELETE all the BLANK songs whether they be duplicates or just single files. I was just tolerating it all this time, but now that i ordered my itouch, i need to consolidate my library! Please help, thanks!!
    PS: I saw other threads where people wanted to delete duplicate songs, but i didn't know if the programs that where reccomended to them deleted a random duplicate, because if that is the case, it could delete the good copy of the song, where i would want it to delete the blank copy. Thanks again.

    Here is a script to find dead tracks.
    Rename it to FindDeadTracks.js
    Run iTunes.
    While iTunes is running, double click FindDeadTracks.js to run the script.
    http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/FindDeadTracks.txt
    You can look at the resulting Notepad document it creates, if you like, to make sure it found files you were expecting.
    Then to get rid of those tracks, download this: http://ottodestruct.com/iTunes/RemoveDeadTracks.txt
    Rename it to RemoveDeadTracks.js.
    Run iTunes.
    While iTunes is running, double click RemoveDeadTracks.js to run the script. It'll remove all the exclamation marked tracks.
    For the duplicate tracks, you pretty much need to look at those on a case-by-case basis.

  • Time Machine - Browse other Time Machine disk - not showing all files

    I have an Xserve, running 10.6 server, where we keep all of our files. It backs up via Time Machine. Many users use the shared drives on the Xserve, and I encourage them to put their files there. We work in a design / production house, so many people collaborate on files. Due to the nature of the business, with frequent design changes, we need to go "back in time" and pull out previous versions of designs, etc. Usually I handle this by remotely accessing the Xserve, starting up time machine, and pulling out the old versions of files from the backups.
    However, when I'm not in, I wanted to make this option available to another user, without giving her full access to the server. I discovered the "Browse Other Time Machine" option, and after making my Time Machine disk (actually a rack-mount Mercury Pro RAID array) shared, I was able to mount it on her Mac, also running 10.6. I thought this would be a nice solution.
    The problem is, in some directories, when browsing from her computer, Time machine is showing no backups. It's impossible to go back more than a few snapshots with it. Meanwhile, if I do it on the server, everything is fine. So I thought perhaps it was a permissions issue, but I don't want to muck up the permissions on my time machine drive and risk losing everything. I did add her account as a user with read-only access to the time machine drive, and told it to apply to all sub folders. This didn't make any difference.
    What is the issue? Is it permissions? Or is my Time Machine too large (6TB) that it can't load all the data over the network? Has anyone encountered this before? What is the best way to troubleshoot?

  • Time Machine does not backup all files

    I recently did a clean install and to my horror i can see that Time Machine does NOT back up all my files.
    It seems to be worst in my music library which fortunately is pretty easy to rebuild do to itunes index.
    But is there any way to make sure that Time Machine does in fact back up all files?
    Or is it just broken and should be avoided?
    I have 1,5 year old Macbook Pro Retina 15 inches 500 GB SSD

    If you use the third-party application "Dropbox," you may see files in the Finder that are not present locally, but are actually on a network server. Those files won't be backed up and won't appear in Time Machine, even though they show in a Finder window. If the files in question are in a Dropbox folder, disable the software or refer to its developer for support.
    Continue only if you've ruled out Dropbox or any similar product as a possible cause of the issue.
    Open the Time Machine preference pane and unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Options button. If there is one particular folder with items that are not being backed up reliably, add it to the list of excluded items. If there are many such folders, add your home folder to the list, or add a whole volume (i.e., what Apple calls a "disk.") Save the changes.
    Start a backup, or wait for one to happen automatically. When it's done, open the preference pane again and remove the exclusion(s) you made earlier. Back up again and see whether there's a change.
