Time Machine - How To Get Started?

I apologize for this simple question, but I can't seem to start up and configure the Time Machine. How do I configure the Time Machine to back up files to a DVD? I have an early 2009 iMac running Snow Leopard. I'd like to back up my photos, music, and documents to DVDs. When I launch Time Machine I get the Time Machine window with a big slide switch to turn it off or on. When I turn it on, it immediately scans the network for a Time Capsule...which I do not have. If I select the "Select Backup Disk" button, I get a new window that has a button to "Set up Time Capsule"...which again, causes it to scan for a time capsule. Can Time Machine be used to back up file to other than a time capsule?
Any help for this reformed PC user would be greatly appreciated.

Partial Backup in Time Machine - How to Get Files?

So, while I was backing up my HD for the first time (I know, I know) the system froze, and now the original hard drive is kaput. The backup did, however, get about 2/3 of the way through, and I can see the "in process" time machine file, and even browse its contents. I can't, however, copy the contents onto my new hard drive. I get unexpected error -1426.
So, is there a way to get these files off the external drive and onto my new hard drive? I can even use the files in the partial backup, but I can't copy and paste them to the HD.

You may be out of luck.
First, do a +Repair Disk+ on the TM drive via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
Then try this: sign on as the user you're normally going to be using on your Mac. Via the Finder, select Get Info on, say, a file in the first level under your Home Folder on your TM drive (like Documents).
Assuming it shows you don't have access, click the padlock at the bottom, then enter your Administrator's password. Then at the lower left, click the plus sign.
That should bring up a screen for you to +Select a new User or Group.+ Select your user and click Select. That should give you Read rights to the folder, and a small box where you can change that to +Read and Write.+
Then click the "gear" icon and select +Apply to enclosed items.+
That should allow you to copy the folder to your hard drive. If it's a large folder, it may take some time, so be patient.
Repeat on whatever folders you want. For your Applications folder, however, just copy any 3rd-party apps, as you should already have a whole new set of Apple apps. If you'd installed any plug-ins, move the new app elsewhere and copy the one from TM. It may or may not work. For any of your 3rd-party apps, you'll probably have to re-enter license codes.
Whatever was being backed-up when your HD failed is likely a partial copy, so although you might be able to copy what's there, it's likely incomplete and may cause most any kind of failure, including a system crash.

If you backed up your iPhone to iCloud before updating the software, first try the steps under "Restore from an iCloud backup" in this article to recover your data:

Did you reboot the TC? That is always the first step.
Reboot the whole network if that is not enough.
If you still have issues.. come back to us but generally the best way is to factory reset the TC and start over.
We need a bit more info on the whole network layout and what OS you are running. What model TC you have??

Managed to solve this myself. Just went to properties > hidden.

Firstly, do you have an external Hard Drive connected to use for your Time Machine backup?
Secondly "stacks" is not a programme; it's one method of presenting folder icons in the dock, and is accessed from the 'view options' choice which appears if you click on the folder. Right-clicking the folder will go straight to the options menu.

Were you not plugged in via USB to begin with?
I would recommend performing some resets just to be on the safe side. Unplug the external HD, and try these steps:

Open Time Machine to the date that you know the iPhoto Library is in the format you want and select and Restore it.

I have had time machine disappear several times in the past
I would like to make an archive so if needed I can restore the oldest parts of the files.

They are mutually exclusive. I run my bootable clones on an occasional basis although they can be scheduled. If you put them on one external drive, partition it so each has its own space.

I bught a new Time Capsule 2Tb. I connected it to my internet router. I manege to set it up as base station but when i try to use it with time machine I always get the message "Check your IP addres"? What am I doing wrong? On my computer I have OSX 10.7.5

What IP address does the TC have and what IP does the computer have?
We need more info as we really have no idea what your network looks like.
Modem router, model, type of broadband?
TC setup as bridge or router?
Is the computer getting internet via the TC?
Are you using wireless or ethernet?
Have you set IPv6 correctly to local link in the computer on whichever network client is doing the connection?
Did this work the first time for backup and has now failed? If so simply reboot the TC. It is a constant bug that the TC is lost to the network.

start by reading the documentation and follow the samples shown, get familiar with the user interface, get to know where the tools are and what they do...and the most important thing practice, practice, practice.
other than that, there are plenty of resources online, depending on your learning style, buy a book, follow tutorials, watch videos, take a class.
