Time machine "hung up" and won't finish a backup
TM was working fine for me. But it has sat at the same place for almost 20 hours now. I have plenty of disk space. The progress shows it is stuck at 40.3MB of 145.9MB. An OSX update was installed yesterday, is that the reason? Any steps to get this back on track would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Normally, a long 'Preparing' session after an update is OK. If you take a look at the Console logs Time Machine is reporting that your backups need "deep traversal". That's fine. Time Machine knows what is wrong and how to fix it. Let it do it's thing. If you have alot if data, it may take quite awhile.
After your update to 10.5.5 Time Machine realized the system no longer matched what it looked like during the previous backup. So it has determined that it's earlier catalogue of what-should-be-where is 'untrustable'. So it is going to go item-by-item comparing the before and after of your system.
However, in your instance, it is simply taking too long and seems to have choked.
*Anti-Virus Software*
Running anti-virus software can interfere with the backup process. Either disable it altogether, or try the suggestion outlined here, “If you use third-party anti-virus scanning software and have issues, make sure your Time Machine back up folder (Backups.backupdb on the Time Machine disk) is excluded from virus scanning.” (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516)
*Reselect Backup Disk*
There is the possibility that the first backup after a major OS update will fail. The Console may report that the backup disk is ‘not owned by backupd’. Essentially, Time Machine no longer recognizes the backup disk.
Go to System Preferences --> Time Machine.
Click the "Change Disk..." button.
Select "None" and click "Stop Backing Up".
Now click "Choose Backup Disk" and reselect your drive again.
Close System Preferences and try backing-up again.
Let us know if this helps.

Time Machine Disk Full but won't delete older backups?
My Time Machine has worked since day one. And when my 1TB disk gets full, it deletes the older backups and makes room for new ones.
However, since last week, it tells me there is an error, the disk is full, and I need to make room for XXXX amount of gigs before the back up can be completed.
Why is this happening now?Is this what you are looking for?

Time Machine hung while intial backing up to external HD
Hello all,
I am trying to help a client here to do an intial back up with her Time Machine and external HD but it kept on hung up every time.
Here's the picture:
She have iMac 21.5" with Snow Leopard OS (10.6.8) connected to 2TB Seagate external hd for Time Machine use only.
I formatted the seagate external HD to Mac Journaled format and everything looks good. The Time Machine starts to back up for very first time and it got stuck in the middle of back up. I formatted the external HD again and tried to do intial back up again and it got stuck again on 111.17 GB out of 278.8 GB for a over 2 hours. It hasn't moved.
I downloaded "Time Machine buddy" widget and it shows:
Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb
Ownership is disabled on the backup destination volume. Enabling.
Error parsing SystemMigration.log to determine source volume of system migration.
Backup content size: 278.8 GB excluded items size: 3.0 GB for volume mac_HD
No pre-backup thinning needed: 330.92 GB requested (including padding), 1.82 TB available
Waiting for index to be ready (101)
Copied 74.4 GB of 275.8 GB, 225989 of 1215218 items
I've tried the troubleshooting with this link and it doesn't work:
http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Hope this issue can be resolved soon!
Thanks,
MattFirst, a terminology problem: this is the Time Capsule forum -- a piece of Apple hardware combining a wireless router and HD, usually used as a destination for Time Machine backups.
Time Machine is the Apple software that performs backups, to external HDs, Time Capsules, etc.
Does the HD have the GUID partition map scheme? If not, reformat it that way. I doubt that's the problem, but you never know.
From the messages, it looks like Time Machine finished the initial backup "pass." Normally, if more changes are made while it's backing-up, it will do a small, quick second pass to catch up. But there's no message starting the second pass (another of the "requested" and "available" messages), and the amount copied doesn't match the 111.17 GB where it stuck.
Try verifying the internal HD; there might be a directory problem that Time Machine's tripping over.
If that doesn't help, look directly at the system.log via Console, for the time of the backup. There may be some related messages there, but sent by other processes than backupd, that will provide a clue. -
I have burned to my external blu ray burner 3 times, but twice ended up with glitches in the project. now it stops at 59% and won't finish sharing. How do I get it to finish sharing?
It's a complex project and there are a lot of possibilities. Among them is the length; there are a number of reports of projects that are approaching 2 hours failing to burn.
If it's a question of jarring Create Disk into action, one thing that has worked for some users is simply to click on and the Apply button (s) in the Settings pane of the Blu Ray Share window and then hitting Cancel. This can be tested by duplicating your project and selecting a tiny section of your sequence and exporting. Change the Output Device to Hard Drive and see whether Create Disk successfully writes a disk image.
You can also check that a specific clip isn't rendering properly. Since the process got to 59%, it may just mean that the burn couldn't be initiated by Create Disk – or it may indicate a problem with a clip toward end of your sequence. (If you can check the log, there may be something useful in there.)
Use the duplicated project and this time set a range for the last 30 minutes or so of the project and export it, using the Blu Ray destination. Again, set Output Device to HD and see whether it will complete.
Good luck.

Time Machine on my iMac won't open iPhoto. It goes to desktop screen automatically. When I select User/Picture/Iphoto library it only brings up the preview page with the size of the folder. I can't get into the library to look for lost photos.
Thank You. This helps me alot to get into the masters and to see events and photos in a utilitarian way, but it is not as easy as viewing the normal iphoto format to find photos. Can I do something else or did I not do something right to not see normal iphoto in Time Machine ?

Mac OS X Server 10.6.7 update - Time Machine not working and other trouble.
I've upgraded my mid 2010 mac mini server to 10.6.7 with server Combo download.
After installation (without any errors) i've detected this troubleshooting.
Time Machine (backup hd is the 2nd 500GB Hd of mini server) dont work more and
display error message that suggest to verify hard disks (done with no errors detection).
Mac Help display white page.
And if try to install Server Admin Tools, installation utility not recognize system HD and cannot be done.
The mac mini server seems however works and services seems works rights. Can be rebooted without problems.
I've tried to backup the system disk on the second hd with Carbon Copy Cloner without problem and it recognize system disk well.
I've upgraded also two others mac minis (mid 2010) with standard 10.6.7 version (no server) and a macbook and a macbook pro without problems (but i've not tried time machine on them).
Thanks in advance for any help!I know the problems with Time Machine on Mac OS server. In your case: Look at the log files, searching for "backupd", if that tells you anything.
In my case, Time Machine in the last year stopped several times. Occasionally, there was a helpful message in the log files where I could identify a file where it had hung -- typically intermediate build results of Xcode. After excluding or deleting the offending files (where possible), Time Machine ran successfully.
Another situation which has repeatedly occurred is that time machine just hangs and does not progress, and no log entry helps. In 3 such cases what helped was to delete the spotlight index (e.g., with TinkerTool System) and let it rebuild. It took inordinately long (10 hrs) and there were log entries by mdworker that it had difficulty processing files. But when the spotlight index was finally rebuilt, Time Machine worked again.
BTW: I don't need Time Machine to backup the server system, for that I run mirrors etc., but for user files it is most convenient and has helped several times. Thus I have excluded nearly everything but /User/*. -
Time Machine hung: a solution!
I've just found a solution to a persistent Time Machine problem: at first doing incredibly large and time consuming backups (e.g. 16.8 Gb – twice in a row) each time even when there has been no activity, then taking forever Indexing Backup, then getting hung completely on Indexing Backup. AppleCare for a month was of absolutely no help – until today I managed to connect to a very useful and helpful senior advisor who actually did what he promised to do.
So, the problem was that my external hard drive was not formatted correctly. It should be formatted: Mac OS Extended (Journalled). Be careful: there are other options that look almost the same, but are not. I was directed to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utilities. Then I selected the external hard drive on the left pnae, then in the centre the proper formatting such as above. Then Delete. Then go to Time Machine Preferences, and select the disk as the Time Machine. Problem solved! The first complete backup started almost immediately and took 2 hours. Normal. Subsequent backups have been taking just seconds.
So, why are these various formatting options for the Time Machine external disk? I just followed the instructions in the Time Machine, never given an option or an instructions about formatting. And it seems that not all AppleCare advisors are aware of this, which I am now learning may be a common problem, especially with Lion.
So, now I can feel more secure about my backups. And spend my time using my new MacBookPro rather than on trying to fix it.Time Capsule is the only Apple supportrf network drive for Time Machine.
Since you have have eliminated that then I have to say no. -
Quick time player quit "unexpectedly" and won't reopen when I click the reopen button on the window that pops up when I try to play clips.I'm on an iMac with Lion.

Time Machine index failures and external drives
Greetings,
I have been running into a number of failures with Time Machine on an Intel Core i7 iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.4. The external hard drive is an iOmega "eGo" 2 TB desktop drive connected with USB 2.0. I have used this kind of hard drive before for TIme Machine successfully, on this machine which has as far as I know always run Snow Leopard.
Unfortunately, I cannot put a date or event to when these Time Machine errors began (whether coincident with an OS upgrade or what); the iMac belongs to my research group, and is located in a meeting room where it is used by several people. I'd estimate the TM failures began maybe 3 months ago, after the drive and Time Machine having worked fine for several months before then.
I've already used Disk Utility to repair and/or re-format (remake single partition) the external drive, and checked the iMac's HD for errors. The external is a brand-new drive; I just recently exchanged the previous same-model drive for a replacement, since the previous one failed some kind of diagnostics they performed back at the shop (I don't know what the problem was, there). The first eGo drive was the one that worked for a while with Time Machine. Since I replaced it with a new one, TM has never successfully completed a back-up.
Time Machine's error message is the usual "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk" along with the "The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk." that comes up when I click for more info in the control panel. Below, I've also copied typical outputs from "Time Machine Buddy" and from "system.log" read in Console.
I've tried working through some of the suggested actions at http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/ (specifically: "full reset," item A4; suggestions at the bottom of D4; and C3), with no luck so far. I also tried using a different external drive (an OWC Mercury Elite Pro 2TB), and tried it connected either with USB 2.0 (a new cable) or FireWire 800; both ways it returned the same "indexing a file failed"-type messages in the TM Buddy and system.log.
Any further suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks!

I ran the 10.6.4 Combo update installer, and followed up with Repair Permissions. There was one issue in the latter that I was curious about:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I'm guessing that's not really related. In any case, I started running a new initial backup in TM which got hung up with the following:

Currently, TM is attempting to (resume?) back up again. Would you suggest leaving it alone, or proceeding next with a re-install of Snow Leopard from the install DVD (followed by 10.6.4 again)?
Thanks again! -
Mac Pro gets stuck on the grey screen and won't finish booting
I have a Mac Pro 1, 1 recently (successfully) upgraded to snow leopard that gets stuck on the grey screen with the spinning rainbow cursor (after the apple logo and brief blue screen) and won't finish booting up. This happened after my computer froze up and I had to force quit. I checked out the forums and I tried all the all the suggestions (like disconnecting peripherals) and appropriate disk utilities, saw no errors with the HD reported, and had no trouble doing a safe boot (everything works o.k. there) or starting up from the software disk to perform the repairs. I did notice that during the repair permissions command, it gets stuck in the last few minutes, the CD starts to chug along, and everything freezes and I have to force quit. This happens every time I try it. I eventually backed everything up, erased the HD and reinstalled the OS, reset PRAM and NVRAM, but I'm still getting the grey screen on restart. Tech tool deluxe reports a "fail" on the video RAM, but everything else seems to check out. Could it be a graphics card issue? I did notice some funky visual glitches occurring prior to the breakdown. Any other ideas?
I wouldn't trust Apple Disk Utility to do a hard drive repair, but I would go with TechTool Pro 5/6 if you have that instead of Disk Warrior from Alsoft.
Clone the drive, though you should have some bootable backup clones already; repair the clone; then boot and work from that drive. Always have a working copy of the system.
And off load all your data to other drives. -
Time Machine taking forever and backing up extensive files. Help!
Ever since we upgraded my spouse's iMac, Time Machine has been acting up. My Mac store/guru guy migrated all the files from her really old G5 to her "new" (refurbished) aluminum iMac... NOT from the external HD she used for her Time Machine back-ups. When we connected the external HD to her new iMac, Time Machine automatically made a new back-up folder and did a complete back-up to that new folder. That was unexpected but understandable. After that, however, subsequent back-ups take forever, and Time Machine insists on preparing tens of thousands of files for back-up every time it runs, even though the great majority of said files had not been touched and did not need to be backed up. I will periodically check Time Machine preferences during these interminable back-ups, and sometimes it will be stuck in the "preparing" phase, and sometimes in the "finishing up" phase. The poor external HD just cranks and cranks and cranks.
I've read many of the Time Machine-related questions and responses, but none seem to address this particular problem. I tried putting the external HD on the Spotlight Preferences/Privacy/Indexing exclusion list, quitting System Preferences, then opening it up again and reversing the process to see whether Spotlight would re-index the external HD (per one communities suggestion I read), but that didn't seem to take place.
I have yet to visit the site referenced several times as the Time Machine FAQ gold mine; will do that next.
Any other ideas, anyone? Thanks, Joe. My software is up to date. I forgot to mention that, after this first began happening, I erased the external HD and had Time Machine start all over again. It did the first, complete backup overnight, but subsequent ones still take longer than they should and it still prepares 90,000 - 120,000 items when it should be doing no where near that many files on an hourly basis. I'm wondering whether the cable needs to be changed out, as well. We're running OS 10.6.8.

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
ThanksYou are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC. -

Please help guys, I have a Time machine at home and it will not allow me to remove the listing of my external hard drive from the excluded files list.
I am trying to use time machine to back up the hard drive. For backing up from Macbooik pro and Imac, there is no problem. It seems to not want to allow the external drive to be removed from the Excluded list and as such will not back up from it.
Is there a way to be able to transfer files (music, movies etc) to time machine, format the external drive then put the files back to hard drive?
Sorry it is a long winded question but it is driving me nuts that I cant sort this out.
The <Macbook and Imac are both running mountain lion.
Thanks GuysAs for the hard drive to which you have never been able to write, is it by any chance in NTFS format? OS X can read NTFS for importing files, but it does not contain code for writing on an NTFS volume. That's a choice, not a bug.
There is third-party software available to install NTFS-writing capability into OS X. An example is Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X. Another alternative would be to use a disk format that both Macs and Windows systems can use for both reading and writing; this would require either a new drive or erase the existing data.
If by "the new system software" you mean OS X 10.9 Mavericks, you may want to repost that portion of your query in the Mavericks forum at https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mavericks . I haven't made the leap yet.
I don't know what other problems you have been having, so I cannot comment on them. You don't seem to have any other recent postings on these forums. -
I need to erase my hard drive and start anew, will time Machine(external drive) and all the discs I got with my computer be enough to restart things. And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad. Here's the info on my IMac:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 3 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: IM61.0093.B07
SMC Version (system): 1.10f2I need to erase my hard drive and start anew
Why do you feel you need to do this? That is such a 'Windows thing' to do!
And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad
Very rarely, but nothing in life is guaranteed (except death and taxes)! If you purchased RAM from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC it will carry a lifetime warranty.
