Time Machine: I just found out that my backups doesn't contain the Applications folder anymore!

I take backups manually, irregularly, with Time Machine. Sometimes twice or thrice a day, sometimes much more seldom, and I recently found out that none of my backups since early June contain the Applications folder anymore.
(This caused a bit of a crisis, since the new upgrade of 1Passport demands that you delete the old version first - and when trying to open the new version I get the message: File corrupt, download again (or something equivalent), over and over again. So now my only option seems to be to use a version from early June, without many of my new passwords).
I've searched all help foras I've found, without coming across this issue - and no, I have not put the Applications folder in Time Machine's omit-panel.
This problem has probably come into existence during an upgrade of OSX 10.8 in early June this year.
So, if anyone could help, I'd be very grateful. How can the Applications folder suddenly stop to be backup'ed - and what to do with it??
Sincerely,
John Fridlund

I know of at least two things that can cause this.
1)
It may be working but you need to be patient.
When I look back in time at my Applications Folder it often looks blank.
I wait a minute or two and then it populates the folder.
So try this simple test.
> Go > Applications
> Enter Time Machine
Click back in time.
Go get a cup of coffee.  Enjoy it for a minute or two.
2)
If the apps do not reappear when you are patient try this:
You may have parameters set that exclude the applications folder.
This happened to me once, even though I never set this parameter.
> System Preferences > Time Machine
Click on the padlock if it is closed.
> Options
Check if it is excluding any things other than the backup volume.
If so remove them by selecting them an clicking on the minus sign.
Run a backup and check that the applications were really backed up repeat the steps above.

Just found out that I can't run microsoft word or adobe photo shop with Mavericks, is there a way to make this work?

You must be using very old versions (Office 2004 or older, Photoshop CS2 or older).
Upgrade to newer, or current versions.

Just found out that my intrnet service provider has an imap email set up and means that I cannot leave a copy of my emails on the server, correct?

IMAP email is server based. All messages remain on the server and are viewed remotely when using an email client like Thunderbird. If you delete the message from a remote device it is removed from the server.

  • I just found out that Apple has ceased supporting iWeb!  I have a large (50  pages) website developed with iWeb and hosted through GoDaddy.  Is there information out there about how I can move my website pages to a supported app?

I just visited the Apple Store to investigate a new MacBook Air.  I found out that iWeb is no longer supported!!  I currently have a MacBook Pro that is less than 2 years old, running OS10.7.5.   I have a large website that I developed using iWeb (hosted by GoDaddy).  Does anyone know how I can migrate my 50+ pages to some new app?  Is there some new app?  Or will I have to start over from scratch? Ugh!!!  Thanx.

You can still use iWeb 3 to maintain your webiste.  Just copy the Domain.sites2 file from the your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder on your MBP to the same folder on your MacBook Air.  Also copy the iWeb application from your MBP to the Applications folder on the MBA.
In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.
If you want to learn about potential preplacements (which have been discussed extensively at length in this forum) do a search for  "iweb replacement".

  • I recently install Lion OS on my iMac and just found out that my Canon 4400F scanner won't work with Lion, what can I do to get it working again?

I am having trouble with some of my previously installed software before installing the New Lion OS. I just found this evening that my Canon 4400F Scanner will no longer work with the new OS. I need to know if there is a solution for this short of buying a new scanner? I am also upset that my Microsoft Office Professional will no longer boot as well. Anyone know why this took place?

If it will not longer work due to Lion, it's most likely becasuse no drivers for Lion have been released.  No way to get aroud it other than going back to Snow Leopard.  MS Office wont work if it is '04 or earlier becasue it is a PPC application.  Mac switched from PPC to Intel in 2006 and created the Rosetta emulator to allow companies to make their software compatable or allow users to buy new software.  After 5 years, Rosetta support was dropped, with the release of Lion.  No way to get this software to work with Lion.

  • Is Flash Builder dead? I just found out that adobe has dropped Flash on mobile devices

I did alot of research on software to develop apps for the mobile market. I liked Flash Builder since it will create apps for all 3 types of mobile devices at once. Downloaded the 30 day trial and have started on the 5 day training course.
Today I saw an article from sitepoint that abobe has dropped development and support for Flash on mobile devices.
The end result of Flash Builder gives you a .swf file in an html wrapper thus we are developing flash when adobe has dropped Flash for mobile. Am I wasting my time? Should I go to another software package?

the plugin for mobile browsers is the only thing they will not update in the future. The normal desktop browser plugin is very alive
Everything else is active... they are still continuing to work on exporting to Android,iOS, and rim playbook via AIRapps in both flash builder and flash pro.
The only difference going forward is mobile websites viewing flash (apps are unchanged). Basically... apple won
Not a big deal so far, but everywhere you look people are frantic and asking -whats next?
I like air for ios and android. Im sticking with it

  • Last year I paid Best Buy to transfer my data to a new computer, including iTunes.  I don't use iTunes very often and just found out that iTunes didn't transfer.  Only the music I purchased is on my iTunes account.  I cannot find it on my external hard

drive or obviously, on the new computer (and I no longer have the old computer).
What is my best bet for getting a new iTunes library?  Deleting and starting new or trying to find the cds I used to build my library I built before and re-importing?

Sorry about the missing music. As far as where to go from here, you already have the purchased music on your computer, no need to delete that and start over. Just find the CDs you imported and re-import them.
    Good luck with it.

  • I just found out that I have a iPhone 4 not 4s how can I get Siri and my iTunes and App Store are in French

    Would like to get Siri

First, note that you've only got 14 days to return, and that's only at the Apple Store.  If you bought it elsewhere, different rules may apply.  As for restoring it, I don't think that's necessary.  The Apple Store techs will restore it regardless of what you do, since they can't know what condition you've left it in.
Also, note that the Mac is also capable of running Windows.  If you want a Mac, there's no reason to return it just because of one program.  Get a copy of Parallels, which lets you run Windows right alongside all your Mac apps, or use Boot Camp to install Windows on a second partition on your hard drive and boot directly into Windows.
For more info on Parallels, just Google it.  For Boot Camp, see:

  • I'm 64 and just found out that cd(s) are for recording music and dvds are 4 recording video

R cds for recording only music & dvds R for video and sound recording -is there more?

You can use CDs for other stuff, but the problem is that they only hold up to 700 MB (which comes out to about 15 average length songs) or so, whereas a DVD holds up to 4 GB. So you can put much more stuff on a DVD. And, using a CD for a video requires special burning or the DVD player won't recognize it as a video.

  • Hello, I just found out that my newest version of Firefox 5.0 is not compatible with the LinkedIn companion toolbar. Any ideas? Thanks in advance and best regards

Firefox 5.0 for Mac 10.6 not compatible with LinkedIn companion toolbar

You got it backwards, add-ons need to be compatible with Firefox, not the other way around. When Firefox is updated, the add-on needs to be updated.
The Firefox version of that toolbar, available from here - http://www.linkedin.com/static?key=browser_toolbar_download - and here - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/linkedin-companion-for-firefox/- hasn't been updated for Firefox 5.0 yet.
You can force "compatibility" with this extension, but if that extension isn't coded correctly for Firefox 5.0, it ain't gonna fix it. <br />
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/ <br />
You'll have to see how well that add-on works in Firefox 5.0.
Of course, you can ask LinkedIn when they plan to update their add-on.

  • Bought an Xbox One yesterday, but just found out about an upcoming promotion.

I just found out that this Saturday, Best Buy is going to offer 12 months of Xbox Live with the purchase of an Xbox One: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/global-promotions/holiday-shopping-event/pcmcat344700050000.c?id=pcmcat3...
Apparently the promotion is limited in time (from 1pm-4pm), so I'm a little wary about if there will be anything that you could do for me.
I'm assuming it might be possible to go to the store a return my (online) order there, and rebuy it at the store to qualify for the promotion, but because it was an online order, can they resell me the online stock item right then and there? That's assuming I have the console by then since it just shipped out today.
Another problem I had was that I qualified for 10% cashback with my Discover Card by shopping through Shop Discover (5% + 5% Seasonal for all online shopping) - if I were to return it, I wouldn't qualify for that anymore.
The main reason for the card and console being on the same receipt is that if they were on seperate, returns would be an issue. If that's the case, would it be possible to issue me the 12 month XBL code after my return period on my Xbox One is up (2 weeks)? That would seemingly solve my delemia.
The last thing that I forgot to mention was that the console I ordered was the limited edition Sunset Overdrive Bundle - which is in high demand and sold out nearly everywhere. If I didn't order it when I did, I probably wouldn't have gotten it.
I apologize for the lengthy read and complicated situation.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I doubt that will happen as then there would be thousands of people that would want free Xbox live gold cards. I bought 2 Xbox one bundles within the past week (sunset overdrive and asasssins creed) with another one this week. That being said I don't get a Xbox live code for those other 2 and even though I'm buying an additional one this wee/weekend only specific stores are even offering this promo from what I understand. You already saves 10% ($35) plus earned reward zone points ($10 ish?) And you can easily get 12 months of gold for $38-40 anytime. So basically you already get it for free.
Best Buy doesn't have any problem price matching future sales if your purchase is within the return period (they handle thousands of these cases every day already under their price protection guarantee), it's just that this promotion is a bit more complicated as it includes a digital time card. The mods over here really do a fantastic job with making sure the consumer is satsfied, which is why I figured I may as well ask about it. An Xbox One is a big purchase for me, so I just want to make sure that I'm maximizing my savings.

  • Images I move from one folder into another are disappearing, at first it was occurring immediately if I did not copy and paste the images. Today however I found out that images I had been using for days just up and vanished from their new location.

Images I move from one folder into another are disappearing, at first it was occurring immediately and only if I did not copy and paste the images. Today however I found out that images I had been using for days just up and vanished from their new location. A few of these images had copies in another folder that remained and the ones I couldn't find may or may not have ever had copies. I had backed up my system with time machine recently as well, so I went into the backup to retreive the lost images. When I searched and found the backup copies I got the error "the file alias cannot be opened because the original cannot be located". The crazy thing is that the images that remained on my computer did not give me the same error and opened like they should.
In short images that I am creating, saving, and using are disapearing so epically that even time machine versions are affected when retrieval is attempted. Any suggestions as to what I could be doing wrong without realizing it? Or perhaps other people have had similar bugs that are software related and have a solution?

    Hi Kevin,
I understand what you tried to do but it doesn't work that way. Swapping drive names will just mess things up.
You should be able to reconnect the files though: in the Locate Referenced Files dialog make sure you click the Show Reconnect Options button — this will give you access to all the connected drives. Locate one of the files and hit Reconnect All. Should do the trick.

  • What external drives work well with a late 2011 MacBook Pro?  I ask because I just found out the hard way that a Samsung EVO 840 does not.  Also should I avail myself of something that works with Thunderbolt or Firewire?

What external drives work well with a late 2011 MacBook Pro (I7, Lion OS) apart from my Kingston flash and USB drive, and the SD drives that I use in my cameras and recording devices?  I ask because I just found out the hard way that a Samsung EVO 840 does not.  Also, should I avail myself of something that works with the Thunderbolt or Firewire connections?  I'm looking to back up music and video files created and/or processed in Logic Pro and the Adobe Production Premium software suite (Premier Pro, After Effects, Audition, etc).

Hmm, not sure what problems you had installing this drive. The review here gives it good marks for Mac:
    http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-EVO-Series-2-5-Inch-MZ-7TE1T0BW/produc t-reviews/B00E3W16OU
There does seem to be a lot of prep to make it work:
"1. Preparation to install your new shiny SSD
1.a You will need a migration tool (I used the Sabrent kit USB 3.0 to Sata that was suggested in these review) see link http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DQJME7Y/ref=oh_details_o03_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&p sc=1
1.b You will need to download a trim enabler (mid 2012 macbooks only support native trim with apple brand ssd's) I recommend going to cindori.org and downloading trim enabler version 3.xx. You can do this step before or after the OS migration
1.c You cannot use the Samsung SSD migration software *don't worry Mac has its own imaging/migration utility*"
    Also in those reviews:
" Only down side when using this product in a Mac Mini is you will be required to download and install Trim Enabler so that your drive performs optimally on your Mac device. This is an Apple issue, not Samsung, but it is an extra step you will have to take after you install the hard drive, and any time you perform an OS upgrade." He rant's on.
Personally I only deal with OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/
They are very knowledgable and if there's a problem they will gladly take back the item. (Never happened to me yet - 8 years and counting).
Just upgraded my 13" MBP 2011 to 120 GB for $79. Adobe CS 6 opens in 3 seconds! Awesome!
When I was in Chicago I had a pro photographer for a client. She wound up with 4 internal drives in her Pro, 4 external drives and an dual array locked in a steel vault in the basement. All from OWC. OK she was a bit paranoid. Great client though.
As far as value for price:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MES3FH7500G/
    500 GB for $130.
However as far as reliability is concerned:
    http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/01/30/are-ssds-reliable/
    http://www.extremetech.com/computing/173887-ssd-stress-testing-finds-intel-might -be-the-only-reliable-drive-manufacturer
So sudden power loss is an issue with SSDs.
Personally I'd go with a moderate sized SSD internally and a conventional external for backup. An array would be the most reliable.
