Time Machine / iCal issues on Lion
Hi all,
please forgive me, if this has been discussed before. Searching the forums didn't reveal anything, though.
Since upgrading to Lion (10.7.1 as of yesterday, and no improvement) I have two issues bugging me on my MacBook Pro (13", late 2010):
when away from my home net, Time Machine keeps bugging me that it can not find my Time Capsule. This is annoying since this message keeps coming every 5 minutes or so and the window is automatically in the foreground and has the focus. Does anyone know how to tell Time Machine that it is perfectly normal for the Time Capsule to be unavailable when on the road and that there's no reason to get upset about this? When in my home net, Time Machine is happy, although it only backs up, when I hook up the power supply.
iCal which I use extensively and which is synced via MobileMe ends up syncing forever every now and then (have found no correlation for this bug to appear - sometimes twice daily, sometimes only after a few days of usage). I have spent hours both with MobileMe chat support as well as with Apple's telephone support - no improvement. I've followed all sorts of tips on the net as well (deleting accounts, adding them again, etc). Deleting and adding my MobileMe account to iCal usually fixes the situation for a while. Strangely: busycal works like a charm with the same data (I presume). Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Not that I dislike busycal, but I was resonably happy with iCal before lion - so I am a little hesitant to spend money on fixing something that shouldn't be broken in the first place

If you are going to install Mavericks on your existing Mac then you don't need to use Time Machine. It's good to have a Time Machine backup but when you install Mavericks all of your personal files/documents are left intact and are unaffected. Only the operating system files and updated applications are modified on your system.
You may want to consider keeping your Lion backup and setting up the Mavericks backup on a new external hard drive.

Have you verified that the original files are missing from the Originals/Masters folder? There are time when the library might appear empty due to a damaged database file but still has the files. If you can open the library package via the Finder to see if the files are really missing or just can't be seen by iPhoto there are fixes you can try.
If the files are there make a temporary, backup copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I've just used an external drive to back up my Mac with Time Machine. I have Lion, but didn't click and check the "Encrypt Backup Disc". What should I do? Can I delete the external drive and start again, or can I encrypt later?
I guess if stolen or lost it would protect my "stuff", and if I'm travelling would protect my privacy.
You must understand the purpose and implications of encryption before deciding whether to use it.
Encryption locks your data with a password. If you forget that password, the data is lost beyond any chance of recovery. Neither Apple nor anyone else will be able to help you recover that data if you don't know the password.
By the same token, the password must be strong enough to provide the security you want. For example, if you're the potential target of industrial espionage by a government or large corporation, you need the strongest possible password. To create and manage such a password safely is a task in itself, not to be undertaken lightly.
If you're only concerned about casual snooping by someone with no special skill, a weak, easily-remembered password is appropriate.
But regardless of the strength of the password, if you lose it, the data is gone forever.
Another point to remember is that if you encrypt your data on one storage device, you must also encrypt it on all other storage devices that would be accessible to the same attacker. Otherwise the data isn't protected. For example, if you keep your computer and your backup drive in the same room, and the internal drive of the computer is not encrypted, then there's no point in encrypting the backup drive. -
I cannot access old e-mails via Time machine since installing Mountain Lion at the beginning of August. I can access those received and sent since the benning of August. I can access other documents prior to August.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action that you're having trouble with again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -
Downgrading from Mavericks to Mountain Lion WITHOUT time machine backup from Mountain Lion.
Hello. I'm one of the unlucky owners of Macbook Retina 15" Mid 2012. I was very satisfied with this computer, everything was great, untill I installed OS X Mavericks. My computer started to have GPU Panics all the time under some "heavier" usage like watching long videos on YouTube. I googled this problem and then I saw that I wasn't the only one, many people had problems after upgrading to Mavericks. I also read that downgrading to Mountain Lion solves the problem, but after the Internet Recovery update, when you are restoring your mac, it restores as Mavericks. I read Apple instruction how to revert os x, but it requires Time Machine backup from Mountain Lion, I already downloaded ML Installer from AppStore but I don't know how to install it.

MdknIf you have a Mountain Lion installer application then you can downgrade, but you will have to erase the drive. You should try backing up your Home folder in advance so you could at least restore your data. You will need to reinstall any third-party applications.
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
3. Use DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.
Use your new installer flash drive to boot the computer. Boot by doing:

4. Select the disk icon for the USB flash drive.
5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
You will need an active Internet connection. -
Using a time machine backup of Mountain Lion on Mavericks
I have just installed Mavericks with a clean installation from Mountain Lion. I have a time machine backup of Mountain Lion, but I do not want to use this backup to restore my system because I have a lot of problem and I would like to be sure that is not a problem connected to the software.
Can I use the previous time machine disk as backup of the new operating system without losing the previous backups?
If I use it, I cannot restore the system with the "Mountain Lion" state with the migration assistant, is it true?
ThanksNo. Time Machine will be replacing your existing backup with a new one of your Mavericks system. If you wish to replace Mavericks with Mountain Lion, then I suggest you replace it with another backup of Mountain Lion, if you have one. Otherwise, if you've permitted Time Machine to run since installing Mavericks, then you not longer have a Mountain Lion backup.
You will need to go to your Purchases page in the App Store and try to re-download your Mountain Lion purchase. If you can, then after the Mountain Lion installer downloads and opens quit the installer - do not run it. Now do this;

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.
Now, run the installer flash drive, erase the hard drive, and reinstall Mountain Lion. You can then use Time Machine just to replace your data from your Home folder. -
How do I restore the login.keychain from a time machine back up in lion
I recently reinstalled Lion on my MBP after doing a back up with Time Machine. I don't want to restore everything using the migration assistant since the issues I was having were mostly due to my account. In Snow Leopard this process seemed very straght forward restoring keychains from the library folder under my user name. Now I can't find the login.keychain anywhere. I'm not sure where else the file might likely be. Any help much appreciated.
Navigate in the Finder to the /Home/Library/Keychain/ folder. Then open TM applications. Go back to the time from which you want to restore and select the file to restore.
For assistance select Help Center from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine." From the produced list select "Time Machine overview." Scroll to bottom and click on the link Restore items backed up with Time Machine. -
Time machine disappeared/reappeared with Lion (I've read the other threads)

I downloaded Lion to my MacBook Pro. I am running OX 10. 7 (Lion). My Airport Utility software is updated and current (5.3.3).
What happened is this:
After downloading the new 10.7 (Lion), Time Machine was not able to run any more because it could not locate Time Capsule. I went ahead and launched Airport Utility, and Airport Utility did NOT locate Time Capsule either. It was the end of the day and I was VERY frustrated with all of the crap that Lion has thrown at me---problem after problem---so I just closed the lid and said, "I'll deal with it tomorrow".
So here it is tomorrow, and I tried to run Time Machine and it worked---HOWEVER....I had to click on "Select Disk" in order to tell Time Machine to use Time Capsule (even though I have changed nothing). Time Machine began doing the backup to Time Capsule, however, it was doing a backup from scratch as if it was the very first time I had ever done a backup.
My MacBook Pro is now completely backed up, however, it is only backed up as far as today (the backup it just did). When I "enter time machine", all of my backups back to March are gone (I purchased Time Capsule in March). Yet on the Time Machine "Preferences" window, it says this:
Oldest Backup: March 4, 2011
That date is correct----it SHOULD be backed up to March 4th, but when I "enter time machine", it only goes back as far as today. It does not show all of the backups going back to March 4th.
My Time Capsule backs up 2 other computers on my home network, and those other two computers are backing up perfectly. There is no problem with the other two computers. The other two computers do indeed have all backup going back to March 4, 2011, and the other two computers continue to backup normally with nothing out of the ordinary. I have NOT installed "Lion" on the other two computers---only on the one MacBook Pro with the issue that I am describing here.
How do I get Time Machine to show all of the previous backups going back to March 4, 2011 when I "enter time machine". It seems to know that there are indeed backsup going that far since it says so right in the Preferences window. I am exhausted with all of these problems that Lion has thrown at me--I wish I never purchased it. But now I'm stuck with it and need to get things back to normal. Help! Thank you very much.Hello,
When I open a Finder window on the MacBook Pro, I see my wireless network name (xx Wireless Network). My Time Capsule is the same as my wireless network. When I click on that name, in the main part of the window there is a single folder. The name of the single folder is "(name) Wireless Network". If I double click on that folder to open it, there are three items. The names of these three items are:
MacBookPro=001F...ee202.sparsebundle
Macintosh1
Macintosh.sparsebundle
Without me clicking on any of them, the first one shows a "Date Modified" of: "Yesterday, 9:20AM".
Is that first one the thing that I am supposed to double-click on? -
Time Machine backup on Mountain Lion not restoring
I recently upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. After the upgrade, I duly take back ups to my two existing time machine back-ups on two external hard disks. I also maintain a separate CCC bootable clone. I recently tried to restore my calendary folder to restore data on my Calendar application but I got the shock of my life when I realised that NO mountain lion restores are working using either of my time machine back ups. BTW I have previously upgraded to Snow Leopard and to Lion, and my Time Machine backup disks have never showed any problems.
I have spent the last 4-5 days trying a variety of solutions, with no luck so far:
1) I looked at Pondini's website, including restoring data from TimeMachine backup to a dmg image and copying. This failed due to a combination of permissions error and wrong information about size / disk space requriements. In any case, this is not a feasible option since I would prefer restore to work directly, especially for large files and system files, as it did before since this workaround is not really a solution.

2) I followed instructions given at http://superuser.com/questions/35152/how-do-i-retrieve-files-from-time-machine-b ackups-from-another-computer and set ignore ownership via command line and then backed up again, but this did not fix permissions either on the new backup.
3) I used a separate external hard disk, reformatted it as Mac OSX journaled (not case sensitive) using a GUID partition map, and then backed up my hard disk (~330GB) which took ages but the new time machine back up does not work either. I still get permissions errors on restore from TM backup.
4) Using yet another hard disk, I followed advice here:

5) If I go back to a TM backup dated PRIOR to upgrading to Mountain Lion, all restores work fine from both my exisiting time machine backups. It seems to me that only post Mountain Lion upgrades which don't work. So my conclusion is that it is ML that has introduced some sort of permissions issue.
6) File restores (i.e. copy paste to my desktop) from the CCC cloned backup proceed wthout a hitch.
At this stage I all I am really trying to aim for is getting a working time machine backup, even if it is a new one which restores properly. That is proving to be a huge challenge. Any help or advice would be very useful indeed. The only option left for me is to now either go to an Apple Store or to call Apple Care, but I am not confident of securing a resolution at either place. Significant slowdown of Time Machine after upgrade to Lion; indexing problem
After upgrading to Lion over the weekend I notice a significant slowdown of Time Machine processing. I assumed the first backup or two would take some time but it's been a couple of days. The process always hangs up at the "Indexing backup" stage. It takes a couple of hours to finish.
I found several threads relating to slowed down backups on Lion, most seem to hang at the "Preparing" stage (not the same symptom) but I did find some good diagnostic pointers. I installed the widget to see what kind of messages were being produced and found a few dozen "Waiting for index to be ready (100)" messages at the end of the stream. Further research - this is not a good thing :-) It seems a couple of such messages can be ok, but this many usually indicates a problem. I'm going to discount the possibility of a hardware failure because everything was perfectly fine up to the point I made the upgrade. Plus the prepare and copy seem to proceed at the expected speed (I watched the most recent cycle just to be sure).

I further found the advice and instructions on how to run the disk utility on the sparsebundle. I did a verify and repair, and the results came back that the drive appears to be ok (it did not say that it explicitly repaired anything).
But the problem remains.
I use a 1TB Time Capsule with plenty of free capacity (only half full). The TC and my MacBook are both hardwired into the home network, networking speed has never been an issue.
I'd sure hate to delete the backup file and start from scratch, there's over a year's worth of data there and I have, occassionally, wanted to go in there and pick up a downlevel or subsequently deleted file.
Any advice on other diagnostics or repair options to take? Thanks!
PaulAfter posting I decided to keep trying to slog my way through the troubleshooting guide. Some of the steps are beyond my understanding but I did follow the advice in #D2 to delete the .Spotlight-V100 file from the sparsebundle. That action does seem to have done the trick, the backups are now completing in normal time. I ran a couple just to be sure. I've verified the backups with BackupLoupe and entered the Time Machine, all appears to be in order and as expected. The only odd side effect is that the backup volume is no longer ejected after completion but that might just be an artifact of all my mounting/de-mounting and playing with Finder. Anyway a very small price to pay for what looks to be a working system again.
Hopefully the good behavior will last through a few days and a few reboots :-)

Can't restore Time Machine backup after iMAC (Lion) Refresh
I recently did a refresh of my iMAC with OSX Lion. I have been using time capsule to back up my iMAC as well as my Mac Mini for the last 6 months with what I perceived to be no issues.
When I got to the part in the MAC start up to restore from backup it couldn't seem to find the iMAC backup, only the Mac Mini backup so I skipped that part. I then tried to use Migration Assistant later and the same thing, I couldn't find it. I used finder to locate the Time Capsule and was able to find the backup, but when I double clicked on it said "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Time Machine Backups". you can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to the files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can".
Even though it said that it open a new finder window and I was able to find the backups and I proceed to copy of the files over. All seemed well until I opened iPhoto and it wouldn't open (just hung). I did a library restore/repair by clicking Option + Command when opening and after it ran iPhoto opened. When I browsed around though some recent pics that I uploaded either weren't there or corrupted and all my faces were gone.
I did a fresh install again and tried all over and the same thing happened. Any help on getting back my old backup? Seems to be corrupted or something, but I'm not sure.

Yes.
And that also means copying via the Finder may not get everything. Corrupted is corrupted.
Assuming you copied from the most recent backup, you might want to try copying just the iPhoto Library from an earlier one -- that might not be damaged. If you have room, put it somewhere else, like your desktop. Or if you have an external HD, that would work. -
Will my snow leopard time machine backups work with lion?
Or do I have to reset the drive in order for them to be compatible? I want to avoid this, because I have another mac that I wont be upgrading from snow leopard for now. They both share the same drive for backups.

i have three Macs. two are on Lion while the 3rd is on SL. all are backing up to the same drive (time capsule) without issues. -
Mavericks Migration assistant does not see time machine backup of older Lion Mac
Used to have a Macbook Pro. It was stolen (circa July 2014). Luckily I had up to date Time Machine Backups. The Macbook Pro was completely up to date running the latest OSX Lion (circa July 2014) when stolen.
Bought a new Macbook Air just now (Mar 2015).
Plugged in the old Mac's Time Machine Backup Disk, Migration Assistant doesn't see the old Mac's Backups.
So I setup the new Macbook Air without restoring.
Plugged in old backup drive, am able to navigate to old Mac's Time Machine Backups.
Tried running Migration Assistant many time , but still it does not see the the old Mac's Time Machine Backups. (although they continue to show in the drive if I navigate to it)
Pls help so I can migrate the old Mac to the new Mac!!!!Thanks Turbostar.
Well, I think there should be solution to use TIME CAPSULE restore as it should I mean I bought Time Capsule because it is easy to use and I really do not want to solve any issues or make any workarounds.
I think APPLE should resolve this ASAP. Meantime maybe anybody knows any trick about this issue? -

I recently purchased a 15" Macbook Pro, i'd previously been using a Mac Pro - through which everything was backed up through Time Machine onto a external HD.
When i started using the Macbook Pro i by-passed the initial Migration request as i had'nt yet got the 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable for my external HD (have one now).
When i tried routing timeline on the MBP to the Time Machine backup on my external HD it ended up creating a separate user account on my MBP. This isn't what i wanted - i thought i could pick up where the Mac Pro left off but have'nt been able to figure out how. It's also slowed the MBP down alot, so i want to wipe it and start afresh - hopefully figuring out the Time Machine issue in the process.

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
When the system restarts you will be in the Setup Assistant from which you can initiate a migration from a Time Machine backup. In this way you will not end up with multiple user accounts. -
Time Machine + iCal = Happiness
I figure among the war stories we read on all these boards I'd post a happy ending...
Last night .Mac / MobileMe decided to lose several years worth of iCal data. Everywhere. On all my computers. It even spread to the Google calendar which I keep in sync with SpanningSync.
On my office computer I have a Time Capsule hooked up.
I reached back to the Calendar folder from yesterday at 4p (which I know was working just fine) and restored the Calendar data.
It worked!
I'm extremely annoyed at the whole MobileMe forced transition - but very pleased with Time Machine. I do test it from time to time... yet there's always doubt about whether it'll work when I need it to... and when I really needed it Time Capsule / Time Machine came through with flying colors.
Chalk this up as one happy story here on the Apple boards.
(and yes, I'm turning off MobileMe syncing and sticking with Spanning Sync for the foreseeable future)

If you're using Lion, then the Home Library folder is hidden. In the Finder, select GO and hold the option key down. Choose Library in the submenu.
Select the folder then enter TM.

Fog or mist in after effects CS3 - how?
I've got CS3 and am looking for a god tutorial for mist or fog. I have to hide a portion of the frame and am using fog to do it. Anyone got any ideas, or links to tutorials? Is there a mist generator in CS3 ?
