Time machine icon does not rotate and back up icon on desktop does not show during backup session.

Time machine icon does not rotate and back up icon on desktop does not show during backup session since I installed Maverick.  Why? How do I fix it?

That's the new look of it. No way to change it other than file a complaint with Apple. If ENOUGH people do thst they may "fix it".

I would recommend setting the wireless encryption on the AirPort Express BEFORE configuring it for the AirPort Extreme in this case. This issue also comes up often when configuring AirPorts into a WDS.
If setting up security in my recommend order does not work, temporarily connect the Express by Ethernet to the Extreme; make the security changes, and then, move the Express back to the desired location.

  • TIme Machine - disk volume not showing in history

I have time machine backing up my boot volume, and an external disk that holds my itunes library and iphoto data. The external drive has failed. I have a new drive to restore to, but when I look at the time machine history it no longer shows the old volume attached, it just shows the new one.
Do I have to name the new disk, the same as the one that died? If so, is there a way to find that name (I don't remember what I called it).

    tbrinker,
Well, it should be relatively easy to determine the name of the old volume, with a little bit of detective work. COnnect your Time Machine backup drive, and navigate it using the Finder. Inside the backup folder, you will find nested folders going back into the past. Find one that is named with a date that you know would have included the old iTunes/iPhoto volume, and open it.
You will see at least two folder: One named for your startup volume, another for the iTunes/iPhoto volume. BINGO!
Now, all you need to do is re-name the volume on your new external drive. For now, let's disconnect the Time Machine drive. Select the Desktop icon for the volume on your new external drive, and press <RETURN>. This should highlight the name for editing. Re-name it using the exact same name as the folder you found in your older backup (the name of your old iTunes/iPhoto volume), then press <RETURN> again to exit the "edit mode."
With the now re-named volume still mounted, connect you Time Machine drive. When it is available, navigate in the Finder to the root of the new drive (not the Time Machine drive), then click the Time Machine icon in your Dock. You should now be able to go back in time to a point where the window you are seeing is populated with folders (namely, your iTunes and iPhoto libraries). When you find it, select everything, then click "Restore."

  • Time Machine basically will NOT complete a backup...

Since upgrade to Yosemite I am having issues getting Time Machine to complete a backup... I have see all most non-existent progress at times and a backup that used to be done in a couple hours now seems to likely take days... I have written other files to my USB backup disk with no issues...
I have seen other similar complaints but no clear fix... this was first reported last Oct-Nov but I have the latest OS installed and I don't see any answers...
Can anyone advise on status of this issue ??

I spoke too soon... after having this issue couple times and stopping the backup after seeing it stalled, today I watch it set stuck initially but just let it grind... whatever was wrong eventually cleared and it finished in four hours.... so maybe this post will at least give others reason to give it time...
I did eject the USB drive, restart, and cycle WIFI just to try and get something going... just not sure what that something was...

And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle?

  • Time Machine icon does not rotate

    Hello,
The small Time Machine icon in the upper right hand corner of my iMac no longer spins while it's backing up. Is this something I should worry about?
    Tom

Look at the icon closely and if it's backing up there will be an arrow head at both ends of the circle.
Otherwise there's only one arrow head. (Bring a magnifying glass to the job to make it easier to see. )

  • In Yosemite time machine icon does not indicate when saving.

I am using an iMac (20 Inch), early 2008, 5 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Recently I updated from Snow Leopard to Yosemite OS X 10.10.2.
In Time Machine I can back up to an external drive however the Time Machine icon in the Menu Bar does not spin to indicate that it is backing-up as it did with Snow Leopard. What can I do to restore it to its previous behaviour?

    Joh,
Since the release of Mavericks, Apple removed the rotation animation.
There is no user capability to change that behavior.

  • Time machine icon not rotating during backup

I'm doing my first Time Machine backup after installing Mavericks yesterday. The Time Machine icon seems frozen - not rotating as before during the backup. A glitch or just something new?

In the Finder Preferences set what folder you want new Finder windows to open to:
That should set the Finder icon in the Dock to open to the window you want.
As for the closed side pane, in a Finder window with the side pane showing bring up the View options and click on the Use as Default button:

  • The time machine Icon does not does not show up in my menu bar

The time machine icon does not appear in my menu bar. The desk top icon for the external hard drive is green. I've checked preferances and the time machine is turned on and the box is checked that has the icon appear in my menu. I've turned off the time machine and rebooted and then turned it on and rebooted again. Nothing seems to work. I'm running Mavericks and I have an Intel I5 processor.

the box is checked that has the icon appear in my menu
Uncheck it and check it again. Any change? If not, see below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

I need to access a website that uses Safari 5.0. I'm using 5.1 and OS10.6.8. I do not have Time Machine activated - so I cannot go back and reinstall Safari 5.0  that way. Any suggestions?

Safari 5.1.9 and Java 6 are the latest versions available for OS X 10.6.8. To upgrade any further you would need to upgrade to Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.4) through the Mac App Store.

  • Time machine icon in Menu bar no longer rotates during backups

Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, the Time Machine icon in my menu bar does not turn while it's doing a backup.  I have to click on it to see whether it's doing a backup.  This started with Mavericks, and was not fixed in 10.9.1.   Will it be addressed in 10.9.2?

That's just the way it is now.
