Time Machine, identity back up disc has changed
Using Time Machine I got the message 'identity back up disc has changed'. Time Machine doesn't make any back up. Cleaning back up disc (7 times!) doesn't make any difference! I have to choose another disc in Time Machine! But why??? How do I repair the identity (I didn't change it) my disc and will it be ready for back up again?

Time machine not backing up new changes
Time machine was working perfectly fine until this past weekend. Now, it seems like it's not recognizing any new changed on my hard drive. The time machine still runs successfully, but it just repeats the same back up over and over again. I've checked the logs in console (see below)

I've also downloaded Time Tracker and it says that things were fine till this weekend and then everything for the past couple of days have 0 bytes backed up. Any ideas what could be the problem? I haven't done anything special or changed anything besides install Google Chrome. The external hard drive I back up to may have been unplugged/plugged but not before it's unmounted or the computer is off. I don't think I unmounted while time machine was backing up, but if I did could this be the problem?ecanza wrote:

Are you sure? Because +Verify Permissions+ doesn't do it. Only +*Verify Disk,+* or altering any partition on your boot drive.
There are some 3rd-party disk repair/maintenance apps that use the same internal OSX routine as +*Repair Disk,+* so if you used one of them, you'd have the same problem.
And by the way, there's no point to running +Verify Permissions+ -- you might as well just run +Repair Permissions.+
I just restarted and Time Machine has in fact "caught up" with the most recent changes! Cheers Pondini.

I bought 2 2TB WD Passport Drives with the intention of housing my iTunes/iPhoto libraries off my older MacBook. I have successfully transferred the Libraries to one and am using the other one for Time Machine. In Snow Leopard I could back up my computer to Time Machine no problem but when I did not exclude the iTunes/iPhoto drive the back up fails. Both drives have been reformatted, permissions repaired and checked in Disk Utility and one was replaced. I have been to the Genius Bar now 5 times. I have tried using USB drive and FireWire. Both drives are recognized and are working properly otherwise regardless how they are connected. Finally yesterday the Apple store installed Lion to see if that fixed the issue and it did not. Time Machine successfully backed up a USB Flash drive, and today I will try an older external drive. Any ideas on what else to try??? Do I have to resort to third party software like Carbon Copy Cloned to get this done? Any ideas why this wont work? I am using a FireWire converter but as I said, both drives are working normally otherwise (libraries working, time machine working for the computer's hard drive. Any ideas would be appreciated!!?
Thanks so much but none of that helped. It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive. I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!

Is there a way to verify if time machine is backing up my apple mail? I was told that if I change computers, that the mail files will all be on time machine and can be easily be put on a new computer using my time machine backups. Is this true? Thanks, Dave
Having deleted some Mail messages by mistake, I have had to recover them from TM. I can tell you that the recovery of mail messages will be done at the mailbox level. In my case it was half of the messages in a mailbox. So I recovered the complete mailbox from TM. Then I copied the messages from the recovered mailbox back into the mailbox I use in Mail. I hope that helps.
Please be aware that TM is a backup application and not an archival application. What that means is that if your TM drive gets full, it will get rid of older files which could be mail messages to make space for newer backups. You might want to consider archiving your mail instead of using TM if you need to maintain your mail messages for extended periods of time.

When i run Time Machine to back up my computer on to an external hard drive, i have no way of knowing when the back up process has been completed. This is necessary to know because i don't leave my external hard drive connected to the computer. I routinely disconnect it after backing up the hard drive, and then i store the external hard drive in a different location from the computer. So, knowing when the back up process has been completed would be a very helpful thing to have the computer specify.
Just enable Time Machine's menu extra (System Preferences -> Time Machine -> Show Time Machine in menu bar.
This will add a little Time Machine icon to your menubar. When Time Machine is actively backing up your data, the icon will spin as a visual indicator. You can also click the menu icon to see the backup status, including how much data is left to back up. -

even via time machine the new osx lion has deleted all my latest files in iPhoto and will only revert back to an old 2009 backup?... Help?!
Have you verified that the original files are missing from the Originals/Masters folder? There are time when the library might appear empty due to a damaged database file but still has the files. If you can open the library package via the Finder to see if the files are really missing or just can't be seen by iPhoto there are fixes you can try.
If the files are there make a temporary, backup copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Has anyone come across the red "i" message saying "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Chris...(the last bit being) iMac.sparsebundle" is already in use."?
As of yesterday (4th Dec 2012) everything was fine, no trouble or problems at all. Wake up this morning, turn on the computer and when it came time to backup itself, the message occurred above and this has prevented my time machine from backing up from this morning (5th Dec 2012) ever since then.
Everything on my computer is up-to-date but this problem still persists displaying this message practically every hour, on the hour and nothing is getting backedup!
If you know what is going on and more importantly, how to fix this, I would be indebted to you for sharing your knowledge with me on this subject.

Is information stored in Time Machine considered backed up?
Sorry for the newbie questions below - I scanned the threads but didn't find exactly what I was looking for.
1) As far as backing up contents of my computer, is Time Machine (and the external drive it's running on) considered safe? That is to say - if my only back up is Time Machine to feel that my pictures, videos, etc are safely backed up - am I crazy?
2) When the external drive Time Machine is currently running on fills up, do I buy another one and disconnect and store the first one?
3) Getting close to buying a HD camcorder - so - how best to manage the big volumes needed for storage? Can I rig up a big external drive specifically for large files such as high res photos and HD video? Will iMovie and iPhoto reference such an external drive?

Cheers.Time Machine is currently my only form of overall backup. There are two ways to do a restore.
If you start up from your Mac OS X installation disc, you can run a utility that restores the entire volume. I have actually tried it recently, to make myself feel comfortable with how it works, and it did work as expected. I did do a clone to another volume immediately before, in case the +restore complete volume from Time Machine backup+ process failed.
The other way is to go into the Time Machine archive directly. So if I want to start with a fresh system installation instead, I can go do a system installation onto an erased volume. Then run Migration Assistant and use my Time Machine backup as the data source. Or I can migrate the data manually using Finder (the way I would really do it), by going into the Time Machine archive directly. The folder structure is organized by date/time of the backup. By using something called multi-linked files when Time Machine created the backup, Finder will show a complete backup for any available date/time, even though a file that never changed is stored in the archive only one time. In other words, each date/time folder shows everything being backed up, even though 99% of it did not change from the backup one hour earlier. So I can manually copy the files I want from the archive to the new installation, just by picking which available date/time to use.
Since I have these two options, I feel comfortable with Time Machine being my only backup for most of my personal data. For data that is extremely valuable, I back that up separately to another hard drive. But I would do that second backup (for the most critical data) no matter what backup method I was using.
When Time Machine runs out of space on the drive, it tells you. If you let it continue, Time Machine starts deleting your oldest date/time backup states to make room for the newest date/time backup states. So how far back in time you can go starts moving forward. However, there is no need to get a new drive, if that automatic process is OK and you mostly want the recent backup states. It is a good idea to buy as large a drive as reasonable, so that Time Machine has plenty of space. From my experience, Time Machine starts to take a long time to perform each run once the free space on the drive starts to become low (or gets to a point where it is deleting the oldest backup states).
You can tell Time Machine to back up attached external drives, as long as the Time Machine volume is larger than the total size of the data being backed up. To operate effectively, the Time Machine volume really should be +at least+ twice the total size of the data being backed up. In System Preferences +Time Machine+ pane, the Options button shows a list of what NOT to back up. External drives are put on the list by default. If you want an external drive to be backed up, remove it from this list.
You can generally tell applications where to store data. -
Time machine not backing up with mavericks
purchased the new 3TB airport time capsule and cannot get the time machine to back up my data. for 3 weeks,have stopped and restarted TM, now it is still working on "first backup" that started Oct 30th. this is my 2nd device, first one died after one week, apple store exchanged it. never had any problems on my older TM, but for space issues.
running on 27" imac has a 1TB disc, 16GB ram, i7 processorMavericks changed animation for Time Machine. There is nothing to worry about there.

Using Time Machine to back up an external hard drive dedicated to Adobe Lightroom 5
I recently began to use Adobe Lightroom 5 (I continue to use Aperture, as I have for years). All of the Lightroom image files and catalogs are on one external hard drive, which I use on my iMac, my Macbook Pro, and in the digital labs of a school where I'm taking a course.
Not yet having developed a protocoI for creating a back up of all my Lightroom image files and catalogs that I could use in the event of my Lightroom-dedicated drive's failure, I have just done a drag and drop of the whole drive's contents to another external drive (which, as it happens, I have been using for some time for my Aperture vaults).
I am thinking of removing the dedicated Lightroom drive from the excluded list of my iMac's Time Machine (which uses yet another external drive), so that I can easily and automatically create back ups of changes to the Lightroom external drive without having to do the cumberome and inelegant drag and drop at some yet-to-be-determined frequency. (The Macbook Pro uses a Time Capsule for its Time Machine; I envision using only the iMac's TM external drive for Lightroom backups.)
What is the simplest and most desirable way to actually execute the backup? I envision that it would be this: that every time I want to do a Lightroom back up, I'd mount the Lightroom external drive on the iMac (or keep it mounted if my work session has just been on the iMac) and then ask Time Machine to "Back Up Now." When the backup is finished, I'd dismount the dedicated Lightroom drive.
A related question is what if anything would be the effect on my Lightroom work if a Time Machine back up began while I was working in Lightroom? This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -

I have been enjoying the new MacBook pro and the useful FileVault for weeks now. I read quite some discontent with FileVault, which indeed could be better, but still it provides useful and free encryption.
With regards to backup on Time Machine, the Home Folder back up supposedly only happen when you log out of a FileVault encrypted account. Meanwhile, I don't always get how it starts and the rules for the Home folder to be backedup.
I make daily changes on my Home folder and the backup only starts once every other week, maybe randomly? Only few times i see the backup progress bar at shutdown and it seems to happen only after a certain amount of additional data has been added.
Has anyone more insight in how the backup (i.e. at log out, only way to backup on TM with FileVault) is triggered? Is there a way to make it a mandatory operation at log out, when my backup drive is available? As I use a WiFi HD (through airport), is it related that backup only occur once in a while and not at each logout

Y.With FileVault enabled Time Machine only backs up when you log out or shut down, unfortunately And when it does it copies the entire encrypted .sparseimage every time. There is no incremental backup when FileVault is enabled.

Why is my Time Machine not backing up my documents, folders and files.
I have a Mac oss 10.5.4. 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 1.5 GB. I have been trying to remove files as I'm running all my programs slow. I recently installed the recent ILife upgrade.
Often I would go in and turn off the hourly time machine backup because as I was working on memory intensive programs such as Photoshop I found it may have been linked to crashes. This is particularly concerning as the backups aren't accessible anyway.
Okay, this is the stupid part - on my part - I included my (House) folder in the files not to back up. I was mistaken as to this being a way not to have redundant back ups.
However; the only file now that is in the do not back up is the (time machine backups) and still nothing is saving - particularly concerning? iphoto file. see below.
Now this is concerning! I restored all photos from "March 13, 2008" - it's september. to IPHOTO from Time Machine. I don't know what changed since then(?) I thought it would add these folders into my i photo cache. This of course has involved a software upgrade since to iphoto. I was prompted for upgrade to the restore. So I said yes, to assure the photos added? where in a compatible format. However; instead it has erased all my photos SINCE. Are my photos irretrievably lost?
Why won't my files back-up for retrieval? Can I restore my settings from March 13, 2008 when my Time Machine back-up worked?
I find it horribly confusing that I no longer can access the photo cache, instead having the 'iphoto cache' icon.
This feels like PC headache. I am about to give up!One thing you can check (using disk utility info button) is that the disk used for backing up must be in the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, and must have Access Control Lists enabled. Permissions must be set so that you are allowed to use the disk, and the disk can’t be read-only. There must also be sufficient room on external disk for the entire TM backup. Since apple recommends just using TM on the disk, one thing to contemplate if having problems you can't resolve is to reformat as the above and start from scratch.

Time Machine not backing up both internal hard drives on 2011 iMac?
I have a 2011 iMac with two internal hard drives---a 2TB HDD and 256GB solid state.
I plugged in a 3TB FW800 external to use with Time Machine.
Based on adding up the used space from both drives as seen in disk utility (totalling 1537.36 GB), it doesn't appear that Time Machine is backing everything up (total backup of 1.49 TB).
Any ideas?

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo tmutil compare

Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:

These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.
