Time Machine in a remote location

Hi
I have no idea if this even possibly, but here goes.
I have a Timemachine set up on a NAS connected to my Apple base station. That's all working well (at least since 10.5.5). However, I'm just a little concerned that should my house be broken into, I'd lose it all and so I'd like to set up a backup in a remote location.
I can use a service like Amazon's S3 but the beauty of timemachine is that I don't have to think about it.
So, is this possible? Can I set up a timemachine backup to a remote location? Could I do both? ie local and remote?

no. that's not possible. If you want to store backups remotely use a different backup solution. Try CCCloner. It can do it.

  • Time Machine on 2 Drives/Locations?

I tried searching for this but couldn't find anything. Has anyone tried using Time Machine at two different locations, with two different drives?
If I have a USB HD at work for Time Machine, and a separate USB HD at home, can I use them both for my laptop at once, or is it basically 1 machine, 1 drive?
(I would much prefer having backups at 2 geographically separate locations, just in case...)

    Okay, great, thanks!
So, it's a manual change on my part each time? i.e., I go to prefs and switch disks each morning when I get to work, and then switch again each evening when I get home?
Even if I name both disks the same?

  • Can the time machine be accessed remotely over the internet?

Hi, I am thinking about purchasing the time machine. Can the hard drive on the time machine be accessed remotely over the internet?

Do you realize that if you store some of your Mac's data (photos, music, etc.) ONLY  on the external Time Capsule, AND also  store your "Time Machine" app "system backups" on the Time Capsule, then if the Time Capsule hard drive ever fails you will have lost the " original" and the "backup" copies of all that data  (photos, music, etc.)?  They will be gone forever.  NOT recommended!

  • Accessing Computers Connected to a Time Capsule From a Remote Location

I am already able to access my Time Capsule from a Remote Location and have read/write access to the internal hard drive within the Time Capsule and the USB hard drive connected to it.
My problem is that I cannot access any shared computers or networked hard drives attached to the Time Capsule.
    Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you don't want to use Back to my Mac, you can just use screen sharing. Go into Airport Utility and go the Advanced tab along the top. Then click on port mapping. Set up a new port map to route to the iMac. When I did this, I just used the "Apple Remote Desktop" option from the drop-down menu, this pre-fills everything in for you except for the IP address of the iMac. Just pop the IP address in the field, save the new port map, and Update the TC. Now you should be able to screen share from anywhere with your MacBook Pro using the screen sharing app. The Screen Sharing app is located in /System/Library/CoreServices/ScreenSharing just drag it to the dock to keep it there. When you open it up it will ask you for a host address, just type in the IP address of your time capsule followed by the 5900 port number, for example x.x.x.x:5900 where x.x.x.x is the TC IP address.
Just make sure your iMac is set up for File Sharing, Screen Sharing, and Remote Login, and you should be good to go. Just a word of caution, when the port map is set up, anyone can use it, so set up a good password on your iMac. Also, under the screen sharing pane, click on "Computer Settings" and check both boxes and enter a password in the box. You should not need this because when you try to connect with your MBP, it should give you an option for logging in as an authorized user, in which case just use login info for a user on the iMac.
Just one last thing, if you close the Screen Sharing app and open terminal and enter:
    defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing ShowBonjourBrowser_Debug 1
then hit enter and reopen Screen Sharing, it should give you a list with all your bonjour computers and saved computers, so when you out in your IP address to connect to the iMac, make sure the box for "Add to my Computers" is checked, and it will add the IP address to the list so you don't have to put it in all the time.
    Hope this helps,

  • Operating Time Machine over a remote Back to My Mac connection is a challenge -- can I do restores in Terminal?

When operating Time Machine remotely via Back to My Mac (and by remotely, I mean from Illinois to Ohio ), seeing your remote mouse cursor is largely a no-go, even in Lion. It simply does not get displayed, with very minor, flickering exceptions.  Certainly it becomes impossible to operate the Time Machine's Finder window in any mouse-clicking way.  I can barely operate the CANCEL or RESTORE buttons, and that's if I help myself by mousing over from outside the Screen Sharing Window, and kind of estimating if I am over the button area.  Similarly, I can get the mouse to give me some approximate date in the backups progression.  But the way to select a file, I found, is through arrow-keys.  I can get to the right directory before starting the Time Machine, and I can navigate to the correct file with much delay using the arrow-keys.  In short, it's a major freaking pain, because of all the lag and invisible mouse.
But I was able to do what I needed, given enough pain and perseverance.
Question:  Given the impoverished visuals for mouse operations, is there a way to do this on the command line, not through the moving galaxy syntactic sugar that just gets in the way?  Can I run the whole restore operation in Terminal?  Of course, still via Back to My Mac, because I don't know how to get to the remote iMac in any other way remotely, given that it sits behind a cable modem and a Time Capsule router with NAT.  And I don't want to set up port forwarding, if I don't have to.
Thanks for reading, and I'll take your considered expert advice.

Well, I have now reformatted/partitioned my poor WD Elements 2TB drive about a dozen times as well as restarted my 1TB Time Capsule so many times it's no wonder it's as confused as I am! <G>
Last night, at your suggestion, William, and in respect for your continued support, I tried creating two 1TB Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partitions on the WD external USB drive, both with GUID partition tables. Both volumes mounted to my laptop's desktop flawlessly and without issue.
Once the external drive was connected to the Time Capsule, however, it was a crap shoot as to whether or not the drive was recognized at all, reporting a problem with the disk, or, even at one point, mounting one of the two volumes but not both. <sigh>
I read somewhere on the Internet that you need to restart the Time Capsule for volumes on an external USB drive to be recognized.
So I tried that. I connected the freshly partitioned/formatted disk to the Time Capsule and restarted it. This succeed in removing the issue of reporting a nameless drive with a capacity of 0MB. It then reported the drive with its correct name but would not recognize whatever volumes in whatever partitions that particular crack at it contained with the exception of the once, as I mentioned above, when only one of two volumes mounted correctly and was listed with the right name and capacity on the Time Capusule's Setup's Disk tab.
At this point I have given up on my goal to use the external drive with Time Machine to back up my Macs or to hope I will ever be able to see its contents remotely via Back to My Mac. All I would like to do now is simply find a reason why I can't get it successfully connected and playing nice with my Time Capsule in the first place!
Any further suggestions or advice as to what steps I might take next would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you all.

  • Time Machine cannot find a location to put backups??

Hi, so I tried setting up Time Machine because I accidently deleted very important files and have tried all the applications to recover them, but none of them have worked! I am very frustrated because everytime I open Time Machine, it brings up this message:
So of course, I click Set Up Time Machine. But then when I turn it on and and try to select a location it brings me to this:
NO Locations!!! As you can see this is very frustrating... and I would please like some answers to find a location, because no matter what I try, nothing comes up! Thank you for your time, and please answer!

    Hi!
    Check your user manual!!!
On chapter 2-3 I could find the following information:
+The computer provides a SIM card slot on right side, which allows you to install an additional SIM card. *(Provided with some models)*+
So that means if there is no SIM card slot you dont have this option on the notebook.
    Thats all about this!
    Bye

  • Time machine backups to remote volumes

    Hi all,
Been having trouble with backing up a Lion system onto a remote (network) volume.  The idea is basically to back up a (client) Mac onto a disk hosted by another Mac (the backup server).
I can get the initial backup to work:
    1. share the disk to back up to on the backup server via File Sharing, and ensure to use an administrator account at the client Mac to log onto in order for it to see the backup disk.
    2. mount the backup disk over the network onto the client Mac.
    3. get Time Machine to select that network disk as a backup disk.
    4. start the backup.
All this works, and I am left with a good initial backup.  However, subsequent backups fail with the following message after the client Mac is next rebooted:
The syslog shows some rather perculiar difficulty in managing its backup disks:
    15/12/11 11:44:31.309 PM com.apple.backupd: Starting standard backup
15/12/11 11:44:31.436 PM com.apple.backupd: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://Tony%20Kavadias@L%C3%B3rien._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Rivendell

    15/12/11 11:48:33.630 PM com.apple.backupd: Backup failed with error: 21
More digging around leads to the observation that /Volumes/Rivendell-1 (the filesystem that Time Machine mounts from the backup server) is now stuck and cannot be unmounted—to get rid of it, I have to reboot the client Mac.  And that the sparse disk image file Annuminas.sparsebundle is mounted read-only when Time Machine attempts to mount it for writing subsequent backups to!
The only way I can recover is to erase the backup and start another initial one, but that defeats the purpose of having a continuously running Time Machine backup.
The client Mac is running Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion, while the backup server is running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.  The latter is really just using AFP services to export a disk to the network, whereas Lion is using Time Machine to make backups on the network disk.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks,
    —tonza

Oh... discovered something odd... the Time Machine Backups volume (that is the volume that is mounted from the Annuminas.sparseimage file on the fileserver) is being mounted read-only!
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    afp_000000004oMw0oYHtK1bbUQr-1.2d000004 on /Volumes/Rivendell (afpfs, nobrowse)
/dev/disk1s2 on /Volumes/Time Machine Backups (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, read-only)
How is Time Machine going to write to a read-only volume?!  This is not making any sense!
If there is one thing I do know about the BSD kernel is that filesystems are mounted read-only if it has been detected by the filesystem driver that a volume is marked dirty or corrupt.  Another thing I'll do is check via Disk Utility that Time Machine Backups needs to be fixed.  If Time Machine is indeed making faulty sparse images, it may be due to Snow Leopard's AFP server after all.

  • Can't enter Time Machine on a remote Mini

Using ARD 3.2.2 on a MacBook Pro (10.5.5), I'm able to access (control, send files, etc.) a Mini (10.5.5, ARD 3.2.2/firewall is off). However, while controlling this remote machine, the control session sort of freezes up after I enter Time Machine on that Mini.
After pressing esc, I regain control of the Mini.
Why can't I see Time Machine?

    Hi ...
Been having the same problem with my colocated MacMini @ macminicolo.net. But with some help from the tech there, he gave me a great solution. We tried using the VGA adapter that came with the Mini & rebooting, but that didn't do the trick. He then remembered that some of his Unix box customers sent him a custom made dummy VGA adapter that worked for them. He had a spare one. We tied it and it worked like a champ. I was able to get into Time Machine remotely for the first time since setting it up ... and see all the graphics and buttons in TM correctly.
Here is the URL < <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://tvtool.info/go.htm?http://tvtool.info/english/dummy_e.htm > to the article on how to build your own adapter. All you need is a VGA connector, its housing and three 75 Ohms resistors. A little soldering & you're done.
I'm off to Radio Shack to get the parts right now.
    Hope this helps.

  • Time Machine backup to remote shared external HD

I've read through a lot of posts about this and I'm stuck.
I have a MacBookPro and a Mac Air.
Both are on the same WiFi network.
The MacBookPro has a firewire drive attached.
The MacBookPro has File Sharing on and a "TimeMachine" partition on the external FW drive is "shared".
From the Air I can "Connect As" a standard user account on the MacBook Pro.
I can "Mount" the "TimeMachine" partition on the Air
Problem: When I use System Preferences...TimeMachine and search for a drive to use for backup it does not see the mounted remote partition.
Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated!
    -- Randy

It might help to backup and tell you what I'm trying to accomplish, overall.
I am trying to use Time Machine backup for two computers on a large external FW drive. The FW drive will be connected to my MBP and the Air will use the WiFi shared connection. Earlier you answered another question of mine about merging Time Machine backups and I realized that the best approach is to start fresh with a new external HD that I can reformat, etc.
I use SuperDuper and Drive Genius as my HD tools.
So, I'm able to take my new LaCie drive and partition/format it anyway that will work best with Time Machine.
I'd like to attempt to use my Time Machine backup from this last month (on "TimeMachineBackup") by moving it to the "TimeMachine1" partition and then have the two machine send both of their backups to that drive.
My steps this morning were aimed at verifying that WiFi Time Machine backup works, but, maybe with your guidance and suggestions I can just move directly to a suggested configuration.
Thanks for your help. It is appreciated.

  • Backing up Time Machine to a Remote Server

    Hi All,
Relatively simple question, the answer I think is probably going to be somewhat complicated.
I administrate a mostly-mac network, I've got about 40 machines backing up to a 1TB drive on our server via Time Machine. So far, it's working great. My only concern is that if the building burns down this backup disk won't do squat for us.
Until now, I was using Carbon Copy Cloner to do incremental backups of the Time Machine drive to our offsite backup server. This was a pain in the *** to set up! I had to bring our backup drive out to the data centre to copy the huge amount of data!
Recently, CCC had an update, in the update notes it mentioned that CCC should not be used for Time Machine backups. You can imagine my chagrin!
I'm now questioning whether I should ever have deployed Time Machine in the first place. I'm thinking I'll go back to Retrospect. Unless one of you fine people can point me to a solution that would get my TM backups going offsite in a way that will preserve their integrity! rsync maybe? I'm hoping to hear from someone who's done it.

I just spent 30 minutes looking for the answer elsewhere to no avail. I too am surprised that it is unclear how to create a copy to move offsite.
One thing that may work is at the hardware level but it is more expensive. If you configure mirrored RAID on a RAID-available storage device you could swap in/out onto a remote site.
I have no idea whether OS X raid would work, i.e., configuring in Disk Utility the Time Machine device on the RAID tab to be a "Mirrored Raid Set".
Curious if anyone gets positive results from either of the above or knows that it won't work because "?tell us?"?

  • Time Machine cannot mount remote backup disk (ReadyNAS NV+)

    Hello,
I own a ReadyNAS NV+ which I use as an external backup. It has a "Time Machine" backup daemon, so the iMac see's it over network. I used it for a couple of months without issues.
A couple of days ago I had to change the physical location of ReadyNAS. Now there are 2 switches between my iMac and the readyNAS.
Since I changed the physical position of the ReadyNAS I try to backup using time machine but it's not possible. Time machine hangs up when trying to up at "Making Backup Disk Available". Using the terminal I can clearly see that AFP has issues mounting the disk:

Finally Time Machine exists with error "Backup disk cannot be accessed. error 109".
Can someone give me a hint or two on how to solve this issue?
    regards

Not a NAS-specific issue.  The OS is trying to read a block of the sparse disk image, and the read is failing.  Basically, the sparse bundle is damaged.  You'll need to rename it and then try backing up again to a clean sparse bundle.
That said, make sure you're running a version of the ReadyNAS firmware that actually supports Time Machine.  There are several AFP commands that were added for Time Machine that *must* be supported for correct operation, and older AFP implementations did not implement them.  The reconnect errors suggest to me that maybe the firmware you are running doesn't support the Reconnect UAM, in which case it probably also doesn't support the replay cache, etc.  If that's the case, then things probably won't work correctly without a firmware update even after you fix the corrupted sparse bundle.
Edit: actually, on further searching, it might be a NAS-specific issue.  Certain buggy network switches do not properly support jumbo frames in mixed networks, which can cause read errors similar to what you are seeing when working with AFP.  (This might have been your post on the other board.)  In the Network prefs pane, choose Ethernet, click "Advanced", click the Ethernet tab, change Configure to Manually, and set the MTU to Standard (1500).

  • Time machine on two remote computers

I'm trying to set up Time Macine on two Macbooks, using one external hard drive. One is a work laptop and one is a personal laptop. They do not share the same network. How do I get access privileges for what's backed up on my work computer when I'm on my home computer? It won't even give me the opportunity to put in my password, it just says I do not have privileges. Help! Thank you!

Is it possible to have a hard drive connected to one computer physically backing up on Time Machine and have another computer wirelessly connect on the same network and have its own Time Machine backups on that hard drive?
Yes. I have an iMac with an external drive connected. The iMac is connected to the network via Ethernet. My wireless iBook connects to the network and uses the iMac's external drive as the destination for it's Time Machine backup.

  • Time Machine backup in two locations

I would like to use Time Machine to back up my MacBook Pro at home and also at work. Is there any way to do this successfully?

yes, but you'll have to manually switch the TM drive in TM system preferences.

  • Time machine backups in 2 locations

How do I use time machine to automatically backup to 2 different discs? I would like to keep one complete backup at home and one in the office. Any possibility to do this automatically anytime I plug in one of the two different discs?

There are hacks floating around to fool Time Machine into doing this (and other tricks), but I strongly advise against it: this is your backup, treat it with respect and use as designed. I just live with the minor hassle of visiting System Prefs when switching volumes.

  • Time Machine Back Up Disk Location Options?

    I have a few nOOb questions;
    1. Can time machine back up to Mobile Me's i disk?
    2. Is there a fix/work around for time machine not being able to back up to an Air Port Extreme's
    USB connected hard drive?
    3. What does "mounting a disk" mean?
    4. Can time machine back up to an external disk connected by Lan cable to the Air Port Extreme?
    5. What is HFS+ formatted?
    6. What is an Air Disk?
    Thanks in advance -Paul

"Well, not wanting to be a smart a$$, it was because it was the answer to your second question, not the first. I guess I wasn't smart enough to assume you might have read the entire post before you did anything. Guess I was wrong."
    Captain,
First of all, your reply doesn't even make sense. If you are going to flame a nOOb on the interweb - make sure you do it right! I believe you meant to say, "I guess it was pretty stupid of me to assume you might have read the entire post before you did anything." Even when corrected your flame response doesn't hold water. Why would reading the entire post before I did anything, invalidate your instructions to enter "script/code" into the terminal? By the way how do you now what I did first, second, etc.?
You said, to fix the Time Machine's incapability to back up to any HD connected to an AEBS then input the code provided into the terminal. The previous instruction was not invalidated by anything you responded to after that.
Also, by answering my second question, you indeed by defacto changed your response to question number 1. Lastly, who responds to questions numbered 1-6 with answers labeled A-F?
    Thanks for the links.
