Time Machine in Safe Mode?

I have a 2009 macbook white unibody running OSX Lion that has some kind of corrupt software on the HD that is not allowing extern drives to mount.  Flash drives mount fine, but not HDD externals.  I took it in a few weeks ago to Apple care and they ran diagnostics on it, and it said it was "corrupt software" which was damaginte the internal and now allow the external to mount.  Everything mounts fine in safe mode however.   Long story short, since the computer was 5 years old, I decided to upgrade and got a 2013 MBP.   On the Macbook's HDD is 225ish GB's of files/data/etc that I don't have stored on an external or a time machine.  I need to transfer over to my new Pro, but I can't run a time machine back up in Normal mode b/c the external drives won't mount.
Currently, I am running a Time Machine back up in Safe Mode but it has been "indexing" and candy caning for the least 3 hours.  So, how should I proceed.  I heard from one tech that you can run Time Machine in safe mode, but that doesn't seem to be working.  I've never used Migration assistant before, but I don't want to transfer damaged files over to my new MBP and screw it up.  What should I do?  One thing I haven't tried is using an SSD external drive.

  • Firefox is hung upm in memory after a system recovery. How can you reset when you cant get your browser up. I have uninstall several times even in safe mode

after doing the recovery, I am getting message that firefox is running and I can't get a browser up. Have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, even in safe mode. All cookies out. have rebooted several times. all to no avail. I can't reset it if I can't get a browser and find no button on your page to reset. Can someone tell what to do?

Note that using System Restore can cause your Firefox installation to get corrupted because not all files are restored (only files in a white-list), so be cautious with using System Restore.
*You may lose data in the Firefox profile folder like .js and .ini files.
*You may need to (re)install software that was affected.
In case you need to reinstall Firefox then you need to delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling to make sure that all files get replaced.

  • Firefox hangs for 20-60 seconds at a time, including in safe mode

Starting last week, with Firefox 6.02, my copy of Firefox kept crashing on opening, even in safe mode. This week, 7.0 hit, and I installed that. Now, Firefox freezes periodically as I click on things -- right-clicking on bookmarks, clicking links, opening new tabs, opening the Firefox menu, you name it.
I've done a complete uninstall and reinstall, and loaded up Safe Mode. Firefox still hangs no matter what I try.

Ok try and enable the default theme.
What I think is key here perhaps is that in XP safe mode your anti virus real time scanning is disabled. In normal mode it is not.
The fact both Thunderbird modes work fine in XP safe mode indicated that your anti virus or other startup application is the root cause of the issue.
My first option is anti virus as they cause so many problems. What are you using?
Unrelated but based on something I was reading this morning, I suggest you run [http:// http://www.adlice.com/softwares/roguekiller/ RogueKiller in addition to normal anti virus a few times ion the coming days.
As your using XP and probably have older software to go with the older operating system. The messy details of this new file free threat can be found [https://blog.gdatasoftware.com/blog/article/poweliks-the-persistent-malware-without-a-file.html here ]

  • Time Machine Preference Safe?

    Desktop iMac late 2013
Processor 3.1 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1024 MB
OSX Mavericks versions 10.9.4 and 10.9.5
No lock symbol showing on Time Machine Preference.
Is that safe or is it defective?

Why wouldn't that be safe? But if you want to make it safer: open System Preferences -> Security&Privacy -> Advanced -> Select bottom option.

  • Does Time Machine and Sleep Mode work with your external USB HD???

I have a new iMac 10.7.3 with latest software updates.
Do you have an external USB hardrive that works with Time Machine turned on and Energy Saver set at 10 minutes on the computer???
If so which external USB HD are you using???
So far I have not found one that works correctly. They seem to corrupt the external USB HD requiring a reformat of the drive each time.
I need to buy one that works.
    Tom..........

I am presently using four different brands of external drives with Time Machine on different Macs:
    Seagate
    Iomega
    Western Digital
Maxtor (this is an old Firewire 400 drive)
I never configured any of these drives specially for sleep or spin down. I just formatted them and then used them with Time Machine. The computers are set to sleep after various idle times raging from 10 minutes to 20 minutes. The box for "put hard disks to sleep when possible" is also checked.  Two are laptops and two are iMacs.
I have never had any issues with any of these drives, and they've been used with Time Machine for over two years in some cases. That corruption you mention sounds unusual.
Did you format the drives for use with a Mac before connecting them up for Time Machine? For instance, Mac OS Extended and GUID partition table? Some PC formats won't work, for instance If you select an NTFS or FAT-formatted drive, Time Machine prompts you to reformat the drive. If you have one of these, reformat the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
I am suspecting you have a drive with one of the PC formats that isn't compatible with Time Machine.

  • Time Machine stopped backing up; Spotlight not working

Recently, Spotlight search stopped returning results for applications, and no amount of reseting Spotlight or rebuilding the index has helped. I had given up on that, then today I noticed that the last backup Time Machine completed was on 10 January 2013. Both scheduled backups and manual backups get terminated early, after backing up 30MB or so.

I have verified both my startup disk (XXX) and the external hard disk (YYY) I use for Time Machine, and both "appear to be OK".
Something is wrong with my system but I'm not sure what. Can someone help please? I'm using an iMac10,1 running 10.8.2.

    Hi Linc,
    Thanks for replying.
I managed to backup with Time Machine in safe mode and I can backup manually after rebooting. Spotlight still did not work normally in safe mode, but it appears to be working fine now… I am not sure if my problems have been resolved though.
Could you please take a look at the Console messages and, if possible, explain what they mean or what errors were encountered? I would like to know the cause of Spotlight and Time Machine's failure, and if it is possible to prevent.

  • Why does Time Machine fail to restore and keep the original file after I have provided my Admin password?

I'm attempting to recover a group of lost files from Time Machine. The files are backups from a mobile app within User/LibraryMobile Documents/.
I'm able to find the lost files, but Time Machine failed to restore them after I select 'Keep Both' and then enter my Admin Password. The screen returns to the desktop and the finder window for the file I'm trying to recover, but nothing else happens.
    I hope someone can help.

  • Laptop freezes in normal mode but works fine in safe mode

    Hi
I have a Toshiba satellite M45 which recently started to freeze randomly. I have checked my hard drive with Hitachi drive fitness test and it passed all the tests. I have changed my ram from another working computer but the problem persists. Today I formatted my harddrive and had a fresh installation of windows but still getting the same problem. It seems that hard disk just turns off as it gives a ticking sound you normally hear when the computer is powered off. I rebooted the machine in safe mode and it works fine every time.
I would really appreciate if some one who faced the same problem can share there experience ??
    Cheers
    Mike

It appears that some device whose driver does not load in Safe Mode malfunctions.
If this occurs before loading any drivers for added devices, then you'll need service.

  • Keyboard does not connect - have narrowed to a software issue as it works in safe mode, but do not know how to resolve the software issue

I was in the process of connecting a Razer Blackwidow USB keyboard to my iMAC and something went wrong.
The new keyboard doe not respond and now my bluetooth keyboard does not work either. No connectivity whatsoever.
I've tried a number of things, including resetting the PRAM / NVRAM and SMC (interesting that the computer responds to the keyboard commands that are required to reset the PRAM). I also checked all the universal access setting to make sure nothing was interfering with normal keyboard operation.
btw, blutooth seems to think the keyboard is connected I get a gree light. I can even go through the process of unpairing and pairing and it allows me to type in the numberical code to pair the keyboard, but after that, it still does not work.
When I start the machine in safe mode, the keyboard works fine. So I've narrowed this down to a software problem. I tried to go to another user account to see if it's just associated with the current user, but since I have no keyboard connection at all, I can't type in a password, so that's no good.
I've eliminated a number of applications that I have recently installed (including the Razer set up app) that might interfere with keyboard operation, but no luck.
Any suggestions on how to go about tracking down this software issue?
    Thanks - musikman7

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” (without the quotes) and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • G5 can only boot in safe mode, or older OSes

    Hello!
    I have a problem.
My PowerMac G5 (dual 2GHz rev.A, Mac OS 10.5.1) has begun to seize working.
Today it froze with a black screen. After a restart the OS launched though the gray Apple, the spinning wheel, and up to the blue screen, and then went black, and froze. All the time.
So I tried to reinstall the OS using the 10.5 DVD; the same thing happens. The installer/OS cannot launch beyond the gray Apple/spinning wheel screen.
Now; I have run the (extended) Apple Hardware test, and there are no error reports.
I can install Mac OS 10.2.7 and Mac OS 10.3 without any problem.
However, after I installed 10.4 I could no longer boot from it. Nor could I later boot from the 10.4 CD. I can boot from the machine in safe mode, but not normally.
I can still not boot from the 10.5 DVD.
What on earth do I do ??
Possibly, there is something that is launched in normal mode that is broken, and when it is turned off (in safe mode), allows the mac to start up.
What could it be ? I have unplugged the airport card, I have unplugged all devices, except the built-in bluetooth card and the screen.
Last week (I only use my computer on weekends), I had a problem with the same computer, where is went stuck on a blue screen on startup. I though it was the Airport card, but it seems that that is not the case.

    Hi Wojciech Kosmala-
It sounds like it could be a RAM problem. Have you installed any extra besides what Apple shipped with the machine? If so, try pulling out that extra RAM while trying your installation.
Are you using a retail version of Leopard? Drop-in disks for other computers will not work.
It is also possible that the installation DVD is somehow damaged. Does the Installer complete the verification of the disk?
    Luck-

  • Kernel Panic - can't start in Safe Mode or from OS Install disc

    Can anyone help me ?,
    Here's what happens :
    1. I press the power button to switch on
    2. The usual grey screen with the apple logo appears but after a few seconds it is replaced by a darker grey/black screen with a message in the centre saying something like 'you need to restart your computer, press restart or press and hold the power button for a few seconds' in several languages(I believe that this is indicates a Kernel Panic)
    3. Powering down as per the instruction just results in the same message appearing when I switch on again......
I've looked at numerous suggested solutions, here and elsewhere - the problem is that they all start with either:
...start your machine in Safe Mode...
    Or
...start your machine from the OS disc...
and I have been unable to do either (the same panic screen just reappears each time)
I've also tried starting in Single User Mode and typing mount uw / (step 1 of another suggested solution) - again it simply hangs after returning a few lines of text...
I have a G4 iMac with superdrive and have recently installed OSX 10.4
Any suggestions you can offer would be gratefully received!

    Hello going:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
One suggestion - if you have third party memory installed, remove it and see if the problem goes away. If it does not and you cannot start from the software install DVD, you will need to take your computer to either an Apple store or to an Apple certified repair facility for diagnosis. Kernel panics may be caused by either hardware or software, but if you cannot start from your install DVD, no further "repair" operations would be possible.

  • Time Machine: is it possible to leave some data on time machine, but remove it from my mac?

At the moment I have around 60gb of photos on my 250gb macbook pro, which I have been told is slowing it down. I would love to have it somewhere safe away from my mac but I'm scared to use an external hard drive because of many horror stories I've heard.
I'm currently in the process of backing up my photos online (snapfish), so when I do eventually man up and transfer them to a hard drive there will be a back up there, too.
I have a WD My Book 1tb hard drive for mac that I use with time machine. However I was wondering whether I could keep using it for time machine, but delete the photos off my mac and  keep them on the hard drive only, somehow?
If not, can anyone reccommend a relatively inexpensive external hard drive for mac (500gb-1tb) to store my photos? How do others back up important data, is it common to keep two hard drives?
    Thanks in advance.

markwmsn is right.Time Machine is only a rolling backup system, not an archive system. If you have data that should never be deleted, do not rely on Time Machine because old data will be purged eventually.
I am not sure why you feel Time Machine is safer than a "scary" external hard drive, since the Time Machine backup is on...an external hard drive.
Here's what the professional photographers do, since their lives rely on not losing photos. At least two backups on external media, with at least one offsite. Having at least two exact copies of the photo archive is how photographers get around the very real fear of hard drive death. It means that you can survive the loss of both your original and one backup drive simultaneously, because there will still be one more backup out there. Because while hard drives do fail, there isn't any other type of backup media that's so easy and fast to update. So you use redundancy to mitigate any failures and then stop worrying about it.
The other solution that is used is online storage through companies like Crashplan or Carbonite. They guarantee your data won't be deleted because they maintain redundant backups themselves.
Of course you can combine hard drive and online cloud backups, and then your data can survive almost anything that doesn't take out civilization itself.

  • Why is Time Machine displaying files only in the present not the past?

    Hi,
My PowerBook G4 recently had its Logic Board replaced. Since Time Machine identifies the machine to backup thanks to its MAC Ethernet address and, since after a Logic Board switch my MAC Ethernet address had changed, I had to reconfigure TM so that the external hard drive reassociates with the new MAC Ethernet address and continues to backup in the same backup folder. For that I used this hint posted on MacOSXhints.com :
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101&query=time%2Bmach ine%2Blogic
While performing this hint enabled me to have my new backups in the original backup folder, and access all my backups through finder, I cannot view any backups in Time Machine star-field mode. Whenever I click on "Enter Time Machine" I correctly warp into the star-field, but I only see the present. I cannot go back in time and the time line on the side doesn't show any dates in the past. The finder window at the front displays only what is currently on my PowerBook HDD, and the finder windows that precede it are all dark grey, empty and un-clickable. What is peculiar is that when I click on Time Machine Preferences, the Panel can show the date of the oldest backup.
To sum up: Time machine has no problem backing up my files in the original backup folder of my external HDD (I can see all my new backups in the same backup database folder as the ones before the Logic board switch), I can access all my backed up files via Finder, but when I enter Time Machine star-field mode, it doesn't show me any of my backups. I really like the ease of use of the star-field mode, and I find it frustrating to have to look at my backups in plain old Finder.
What I don't know is whether hint I described above might have introduced errors that provoked the error or whether this might be due to the fact that while my computer was going for repair, I connected the external HDD containing my backup with two computers running Mac OS X 10.4 to retrieve some backed up files.
My case must probably be quite rare, but since I haven't found any solutions to this date, I'm posting it now.
I would be extremely grateful if anyone had a solution for this, or an intuition on the different parameters to modify to correct this Time Machine problem. Any contribution will be helpful. Thank you very much.

    gbullman,
You say that the logic board was replaced? Then you will not be able to continue backups to the SAME backup set.

Actually, this is normal. Anytime your hardware has changed, or you have reinstalled the operating system again, Time Machine will perform a new full backup.
    *Full Backup After Restore*
Bear in mind that in all cases Time Machine will perform a full backup after a full restore. This is normal. Time Machine will resume incremental backups after the full backup has completed. To view previous backups, Control-click or right-click the Time Machine icon in your Dock or Option-click the Time Machine menu extra and Choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks," then select your previous backup volume. You will enter Time Machine and be able to browse your previous back ups and restore files. [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338]
So even on unchanged hardware, if you reinstall your system software and restore your user data, Time Machine starts anew, and you will not be able to resume backing up with the same history as the previous backups.
While there may be ways to fool/hack Time Machine into recognizing previous backups without performing another full backup, they are likely rather elaborate. Ultimately, though, in a couple of months, all the effort to preserve old backups may seem pointless. After all, Time Machine will eventually purge away that data anyways as it replaces it with new files.
It may simply be easier to begin a fresh series of backups while saving the previous backups until your satisfied that you have enough history built up. Then delete the old backups.
    *Why Can’t I Resume Backups?*
You see, Time Machine was designed to restore your Macs’ immediate environment in case of system crashes or accidental deletion of user files. As a result, reinstalling your Mac OS system software or changing your hardware requires a fresh set of backups since older backups would not accurately represent the current state of your Mac.
Additionally, if a user has had to reinstall the system software, then resuming backups to the same set could later reintroduce the very issues that forced the reinstall in the first place. Furthermore, maintaining backups that were started with an older Mac, introduces the possibility of restoring system files that were never intended for the new Mac.
If you require long-term archival storage of files, then you need another backup strategy.
    Hope this clarifies some things.
    Cheers!
