Time Machine in Yosemity? Beachball!!

Why oh why is the yosemity incarnation of time machine bringing my macbook pro to a grinding halt? Nowadays it takes the program hours to backup a measly 35Mb while presenting me with the dreaded spinning beachball for minutes at an end.
The program is still as useful as ever, a real livesaver, but to have it running an actual backup surely annoys me.
It seemed the pre yosemity backups were incompatible so the hd was reformatted so it was a fresh start with the new operating system
Within a week the slowdown was so bad i threw the backup file in the trash. Deleting it took about a day, it contained millions upon millions of files. Total amount of data was only about 150 Mb.
I guess the cleaning up phase in the latest version doesn’t really clean up.
Please mr. Apple, fix this once so useful program. Or even better, return to the old Apple tradition of releasing stuff when it’s ready, and not because the calendar says it’s time.
With kind regards,
P. Keizer.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Reinstall system to solve beachball issue, then get files from time machine backup.. will the bring beachball back

    Hi,
My iMac has a beachball issue to the extent that now it not even starts up anymore, I don't even get to the desktop screen. I plan to reinstall the system from with the CD I got when I purchased the iMac 2 years ago, then update the operating system to the latest version, and then get my files and programs back from my latest time machine backup, which was completed c. 2 weeks ago.
    1) Will this process generally work? I am running Mavericks 10.9, so the CD I want to install from will be an older version, but I then plan to upgrade to 10.9 before accessing the time machine files.
    2) Post upgrading the op system to the latest version, when I then get the programs and files back from time machine, will that bring also back the beach ball issue, or given that everything will be saved and installed 'cleanly' it will be alright?
I am not a mac pro, so still learning, please forgive if I am not posting required info. Let me know what you need.
    Thanks

    1. Yes.
    2. Depending on what is causing the beachball, restoring may or may not bring the problem back.

  • Hard drive not recognized (OMG) & Time Machine

While using my MacBook 10.5.8 I got beachball and could not quit apps or restart.  I shut down using pwr button and now computer will not recognize hard drive when checking with Disk Utility, or when trying to reinstall from DVD.
Any suggestions?? Is my HD shot?? Is there any use taking it to Apple Store??
If I connect my external Time Machine to another computer, PowerBook G4) (also running 10.5.8) will it load/restore old computer data??

A Powerbook G4 will likely not understand what to do with half the data on it, because the MacBook is a different setup.       Do you have the original 10.5 installer disc that was used for the MacBook?  If you do, boot off of it, and see if it can see your Time Machine backup through its Utilities menu for restoring via Time Machine.  Connect the drive when it requests you do so.  If it can, but it can't see the internal drive, then you probably need to first see if the internal drive's directory is damaged.  For that you need to run the Disk Utility in the Utilities menu of the installer program for 10.5's Repair Disk.    If it can't repair disk, go out and purchase Alsoft Disk Warrior.  If it can't repair the disk, then yes the internal hard drive is shot.  If one or the other can repair the disk, shut down the computer and eject the 10.5 disk holding the mouse button.  It should reboot normally.

  • Restoring files from time machine backup made using Mountain Lion

    Hi Guys
I have trawled through the Internet and found many sources of help for some of my headaches but still can't help the problem. So here I am.....
I have an early MacBook Pro 13" that came with snow leopard. I immediately updated to lion which was a disaster being so slow etc. Then I upgraded to mountain lion which was pretty good. I always upgraded and never clean installed.
I have been running time machine on a Qnap nas (model 212) which I must add has been a headache to get going in itself.
Anyways I recently upgraded to mavericks which made my MacBook grind to a halt. I mean even the beachball was struggling. To the point after 2 weeks I couldn't get anything done on it!
So I decided to do a clean install.  Did that and then tried to do restore files using migration assistant at first log in. Turns out my back is corrupted!
Now I know I have a good complete backup of my mountain lion system just 2 weeks old on my nas. Only problem is that mavericks won't let me get to that when I try to upgrade from that drive as it just says no OSX backup available.
Now I am trying to install snow leopard cleanly and the try and upgrade to mountain lion hoping that it would recognise the mountain lion backup on my nas.
Can you please let me know if I am going in the right direction?
    Any help appreciated guys.
    Thanks

Everything since the fresh install, has to be done manually from my Backup drive. Wasn't, or isn't TM supposed to do that automatically (for example restoring iTunes, is it supposed to restore just the application or all the folders with it as well?). Why, when I select a folder with many subfolders in it (and eventually the files I want within) does it say that the original whatever doesn't exist anymore at that location, then I have the option to choose a new location or to recreate the enclosing folders? I Click on recreate but when I do, just the top level shows (the first folder, for example, garageband). No more folders are shown inside, despite there being plenty of files in my backup version. Am I misunderstanding TM's powers/capabilities here? Is it supposed to be this frustrating and difficult?
Everything that I want has to be done manually it seems. I don't understand it. The other thing is that it denies me access (I don't have the privileges or whatever it says) to move the files directly via the mounted disk on the desktop rather than entering TM. So, I can't go into TM and click restore, I can't manually open the mounted drive and drag files (denies me permission). The only way I've been able to do anything successfully is to archive the **** folder/s or files.
Any help or direction, or a manual on how to use or tutorial on Time machine would be great. Someone point me in the right direction please, this is highly annoying and I am debating switching back to Leopard (having issues with iChat in Snow Leopard).
    Thanks

  • Time Machine backup and main drive corrupted. Help! (REWARD OFFERED)

    Here's the deal:
I have a Macbook Pro and a Mac Mini both runnign Snow Leopard. I use the Mac Mini as a kind of media center / server, it has a few external drives connected to it. On of these drives (1GB) is dedicated to Time Machine, the Mac Mini (80 GB hard drive) backs up to it directly and the Macbook Pro (500 GB hard drive) does it over the network (Time Machine created a sparsebundle). This has worked well for years now. Occasionally I got the error that Time Machine needed to start a new backup because the old one was corrupt. That happened about 2-3 times a year (did the same thing when I backued up via USB). Now about 2 weeks ago, that error came up and I just let the Macbook Pro on overnight and connected the ethernet cable for faster transfer.
When I woke up, the Macbook Pro didn't respont at all, spinning beachball, no response at all beside mouse movement. I let it do it's thing for another 10 hours (while I was at work) and just held down the power button to power off and restart it. But all I got was the gray-on-gray flashing folder with the question mark in it, that's what you get when the Mac can't find bootable partitions. So I popped in the OSX Snow Leopard install disk, ran disk utility. It saw the hard drive, but no partition (i.e. Machintosh HD) on it. I checked the Time Machine backup and the sparsebundle was 300 GB (the Macbook Pro had 400 GB used, the remaining 100 GB were free). There is no way to restore from an unfinished Time Machine backup...
First thing I did was clone the internal (Macbook Pro) hard drive to a DMG disk image using DiskDrill (the only program I found that could recognize the drive at all, not even DiskWarrior could). I also bought the exact same hard drive model and partitioned it like the cloned the corrupted hard drive to the new one using ddrescue (a command line tool that doesn't quit upon i/o errors but proceeds and tries to recover as much as it can). It copied everything except 65 kilobytes, the corrupted drive seemed to be physically damaged in a bunch of sectors relatively at the beginning of the disk. Since I had now an exact copy on a fresh, healthy drive, I went crazy trying out Disk Warrior (didn't recognize the drive at all), data rescue, testdisc, p a Windows isk, etc. Only R-Studio (on windows) showed the EFI and Macintosh HD partitions on there, they started and ended on the same sectors on the corrupted drive and its clone. After some research, I figured that the partition table was corrupt so I reformated the clone disk using the OSX Snow Leopard install disk (1 HFS Journaled Partition with GUID Partition table). R-Studio showed the EFI and Macintosh HD on that reformated drive, again, same sectors as before. So I figured I could just copy just the bytes where the Macintosh HD starts from the corrupted drive to the clone (using ddrescue). That worked, after almost 24 hours, I had the clone drive with a "disk1" partition on it that even disk utility could see.
Now I was able to run Disk Warrior on it, but all it could do was recover a few Application folders (Resource-Folders and lproj-stuff), about 100 MB in total. It couldn't repair more of catalog file apparently. Luckily, Time Machine backed up quite a bit (300 GB out of 400 GB of data) and I was able to manually copy all the Dokuments, Desktop, user Library, Applications, Music, Download and Movies. Unfortunatley, only a little bit of the Pictures folder was copied. iPhoto library (80 to 100 GB) was nowhere to be found, backup must have failed right then. I can salvage the drives (time machine drive, original hard drive with a few broken sectors, DMG-image of that drive, 1-1 copy of that drive with partition table repaired) but that only gives me files with numeric names and today's date on teh JPEGs (instead of the date the picture was taken).
Is there any way I can recover that iPhoto library? It appears the catalog file got corrupted because the hard drive (only 8 months old...) failed on a few sectors. If I understand it correctly, the catalog file on HFS+ file systems is where the folder structure and file names are stored in a B-Tree. I can't imagine that some i/o error during backup can totally annihilate that file when it was working perfectly before. Here's a few things I want to try out but haven't figured out how so far:
    - Time Machine had to start a new backup. There's plenty of free space on that drive so there's a good chance there's old data left on it. Is there a way to restore files (including file names) and fodlers from deleted time machine backups?
    - Is there any way to re-build that catalog file from what is there left on the original hard drive? I can't imagine 65 kilobytes destroys it all.
    - Are there other ways to recover my iPhoto Library? The raw JPEG (and AVI) files with correct file names or metadata would suffice.
Thanks in advance for any help, I'll actually reward the person with a working solution, 5 years of photo memories are somewhat important. It really ***** that a failure during a backup destroys that...

    Final Update:
The catalog file on the original hard drive could not be fixed. Seems like Mac OSX tried to repair the catalog file while the sectors this file resides on failed. To make things worse the partition table was also broken beyond repair, even overwriting the sectors with a new correct partition table didn't help. DiskWarrior found less then 100 MB worth of stuff, mainly Applications folders.
I recovered pretty much everything from the incomplete Time Machine backup by right-clicking the sparsebundle and browsing through the folders with the long alphanumeric names, looking for the version of the folder with the most files in there. All I was missing was part of the ~/Pictures folder, i.e. photobooth pictures and the whole iPhoto Library. My best option was to recover these files using data recovery tools.
DiskDrill proved to be the absolute best, fast, responsive, efficient, and the only one able to mount the DMG-file with no valid file system on it. As there were many i/o errors and broken sectors on the original hard drive, I made a copy of it using a free command line tool called ddrescue (the standard dd tool just aborted when it encountered the i/o error). ddrescue copied the whole drive to a DMG image, I had 56 kilobytes with errors on the first pass, but it managed to shrink that down to just 4 kilobytes (wow!) after the second pass where it tries to re-read the broken secors. It took about 24 hours for a 512 GB 2.5" drive (5400 rpm) but well worth it. Be advised that ddrescue is really persistent and tries everything to recover those last errorneous bytes. At the very end of the process, the read/write head of the hard drive just goes wild trying to catch the data on the sectors with different momentum. This works but I assume this is pretty damaging for the original drive. I also copied it all to a new hard drive (again using ddrescue) and tried partition and catalog repair tools on that (DiskWarrion, testdiks, pdisk, etc.). Still no hint of a good result.
I made a deep scan on the clone hard drive with DiskDrill. At the end (after about 8 hours over USB) it found 13 partition (I assume that's the Macintosh HD, EFI and some DMG files lying around) and  hundreds of thousands of pictures. I restored some JPG files just to check the quality, some were damaged, some were good with all the EXIF data intact. I just made it copy all JPG files into a folder. I know the pictures taken from my camera produce JPGs larger than 1 MB and smaller than 5 MB, so I sorted them by size and moved the smaller and larger files into seperate folders. I took the remaining folder (100 GB) and just dragged it into iPhoto. It imported them overnight. Auto-Split by events and I got my library back, alas with different file names, originals and edited versions side by side, lots of duplicates, some damaged, some not. But hey, all the pictures in chronological order. Okay there was also one large event with all the JPGs without valid EXIF data landed inside, iPhoto just takes the file creation date (i.e. the date where the recovered file was copied). As far as I can tell, these are all just data corpses, halfway overwritten copies, random pictures from the internet, desktop pictures, etc.
I started to work my way back through the events, deleting the duplicates and renaming the events. There's an app called "Duplicate Annihilator" which apparently can find duplicate pictures in iPhoto and mark them for you. The free version only does 500 pictures but if it works, I'll get the full version. It can mark th eduplicate photos by adding something to the picture comment in iPhoto so you can manually review it all. Good stuff!

  • Disk failure and no Time Machine backup

Hi, I had hard disk failure on my iMac and I don't have Time Machine or any other backup.
By press 'Option' key, I may access Disk Utility, but failed if trying to verify or repair disk (see photo), and it asked me to '...Backup as many of your files as possible...'
I also tried to 'Reinstall OS X' via Internet, but the Mac seems getting frozen (spinning beachball) at 'Loading Installation Information' (see photo)
Could anyone please tell me how to '...Backup as many of your files as possible...'???
Do I have to disassemble iMac and pull the hard disk out......?
    Thanks

Removal of the disk drive sounds like your only hope of recovery any data
You are probably going to need recovery software because it sounds like the directory is totally corrupted.
You can find information about a bunch of them at http://mac-data-recovery-software.esoftreviews.com
If the recovery software is not able to recovery enough of your data, there are services that can do that for you. But expect to pay big bucks for that, think like $$$$.
You are going to implement a backup plan after this episode?

  • Time Machine Backup hangs on both USB and Time Capsule

    Hello!
I have some problems with Time Machine backing up my MacBook Pro Retina 15" Late 2013 running Yosemite 10.10.2.
I am using the MacBook both in the office and at home attached to a USB hub with KeyBord and external screen. The MacBook is usually closed and I put in sleep mode ("Ruhezustand" in German) when changing the location.
In my office I have a Time Capsule and at home I am attaching an USB 3 external hard disc directly to the free USB port on the MacBook. Everything worked fine for a long time and I did not pay much attention to the updating process itself.
Since a couple of weeks I have the problem, that Time Machine Backup hangs - on both USB-Drive and Time Capsule. This could happen at different positions like 550 MB of x.x GB or 3 KB of x.x GB (Calculating Time Remaining).
The only way to run the backup completely is to restart the Mac. Then everything runs fine and the following automatic backups are running smoothly, too. It seems the problem only occours after moving from one location to another.
I tried checking the Volume of the Mac and the USB drive and also tried repairing Rights on the Volume.
I also tried resetting the pram during the start-up procedure.
Changes I made in the last months are moving from Mavericks to Yosemity, replacing old Cherry Keyboards with Apple keyboards and updating a driver for the USB-Hub including Lan-Access.
    Thank you for your help!
    Markus

Ok, I got a lot of results. I hope this information is helpful. Keep in mind I restarted the machine and Time Machine is now working fine. This will probably be the case until I am in the office again (not before Tuesday).

  • Time Machine very slow, Safari and iTunes have to Force Quit

Anyone else having these issues after Mavericks "upgrade"?
Time Machine is so slow as to be ineffective of useless, symtoms:
         - takes hours to prepare and run a backup of a couple of GB to the Time Capsule, anything up to 20 hrs!
         - constantly revising the amount to be backed up, up and down
         - seems to freeze periodically ad stick part way through with no change to the backed amount for hours, then speeds up, freezes, speeds up
         - time remaining estimate alternates between "casculating, estimates of hours and seconds! wildly inaccurate
                  - it's been saying 5 seconds remaining for the last 2 hrs.
         - have done two backup verifications to check for Time Capsule problems - none
         - only two successful backups achieved since the Maverisks "upgrade" due to the time it takes
         - both Time Capsule and Airport Express have the latest firmware and software
Coincident with this, both Safari and iTunes (the latest Mavericks compatible versions) both freeze when trying to quit them - have to force quit.  Both experience random slow downs and with the spinning rainbow beachball.
Looks like a Mavericks problem with the Wifi and Timemachine?
Using a late 2008 aluminium unibody Macbook with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, 100Gb of free space o the SSD.  Connecting via Wifi to Time Capsule (2TB, with 1.8TB free) and Airport Express (both n Wifi).

Check whether there is a crash report:
Go to your Applications Folder and open your Utilities Folder. Open the application Console.
In the left-hand column, click on Crash Reporter.
Click on the small triangle under Crash Reporter in the l/h column and they will all be listed.
Scroll down to the latest Safari report and click on it.
Now click on the r/h column (which now only shows THAT crash report and then Command-a to copy it all.
Come back here and Command-v it to post it here!

  • Cannot clean install- Only time machine works

    Hello!
I am currently running into aa few problems with my Macbook pro 15" mid 2009 laptop. I have had some troubles with the computer consistently beachballing, and freezing up so I decided I had enough and wanted to start from sqaure one. So I bought new Ram (corsair 2x 4gb 1066MHz), and a new hard drive (Seagate Momentus XT 500gb) and subsequently installed the two.
Now for the root of my problem- I cannnot for the lfe of me get Lion or snow leopard to install! It gets about 80% of the way and the installation will fail saying to contact the software manufacturer. Luckily I have a bootable external drive which I have used for diagnostics and I am coming up empty. Disc utility is claiming the drive is perfectly fine, and Memtest is saying the ram is fine. I was searching for a solution so I decided totry and install from a time machine backup which worked fine. Very weird.
Any ideas on what would cause my computer to reject a clean install?

You may have a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • Clean install from Time Machine

My Macbook started to get slower over the last couple of months.
Last month I lost about 10/7500 records in cash book.
I did Verify disk in Disk Utility which recommended reinstall.
I did backup to Time Machine.
    Then did Erase Disk.
Now restart computer (holding down command-R) and get message to instal from internet.
How can I install from the Time Machine.
I have another MacBook Pro ,on OS X 10.7.5.
    Hoping someone can help.
    Regards, David.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Clean install mavericks and migrate time machine

I have been having lots of trouble with my MacBookPro, 17", late 2009. Seems like it takes forever to boot or to launch apps. I have reinstalled th OS several times and done a full restore from TimeMachine twice. I still see the beachball for hours each day. I am now trying to do a full backup to Time Machine with the System excluded so that if I do a clean install of the OS, I won't recorrupt the system when I migrate the backup. My question relates to some posts I have read that say Mavericks has trouble migrating TimeMachine. Any advice would be appreciated.

I did exactly this on my mid-2009 15" MacBook Pro, only I have the boot SSD in the optical disk bay and left the HDD in the disk bay. What you want to avoid is having only one copy of your data, be it on the old HDD or as a Time Machine or other backup; although the risks are small, they are not zero.
Since I had multiple backups, I wiped and formatted my HDD, and did a clean install of 10.9 onto the SSD and then used Migration Assistant to move everything I wanted to it. I then created the folders and links on the HDD and put the files I wanted there, mainly large media files which are read sequentially and would not benefit as much from an SSD.

  • Time Machine kills my OS

I'm not sure if it is because Spotlight was running (or hanging, I'm not sure whether it was actually doing anything or not) (and I had turned my TM disc to the Private setting in Spotlight) or what, but twice now running Time Machine has frozen everything. It stopped at about 17 GB the first time (this time I had to literally pull the plug to get the computer to stop it) - after this I double checked and reformatted the partition to make sure it was GUID (or whatever it was). Today I reran it and it failed - no idea why, then after playing with things (making sure Spotlight was not trying to go through the TM drive), it managed to hang at 8.52 GB, and no other program would run. It even would not restart the computer - luckily the power button worked, so I didn't have to pull the plug again.
Ever hear of this bahavior, or have any ideas on how to get the stupid program to work properly?

This appears to be happening to me lately (started yesterday, same date as your post). One after another, programs just start hanging. It doesn't matter whether I'm trying to launch something new or switch to something already running. Soon after I select the program from dock or screen, I get the beachball. Eventually nothing works, cursor freezes, I have to power off. When I restart, I look at the system.log, and the last thing in there before the restart is a message saying a TM backup started. It appears "in progress" on the TM disk. I've tried a disk utility repair on that volume, it ran for a good long while, and the next 3 or 4 TM backups worked, but then it started happening again. I've been using TM for almost a year, no serious problems until yesterday. I've currently turned TM off to make sure it still doesn't happen, but I think it's TM, and it appears to be something that has started happening very recently.
I'd really rather not reformat an lose my current backups, but I guess that will have to be the next thing to try.

  • Time Machine and right click

Minor but annoying issue: the first time I right click in any application with my Time Machine volume connected I have to wait ages for the beachball to disappear. I know there's generally a delay after an initial right click but this can take 3/4 minutes.
At first I thought it was just a case of having to wait for the drive to spin up if it hadn't been used for a while but there seems to be a lot more drive activity than this, it's almost as if its scanning the volume for something. Other than that Time Machine works fine, and if the drive isn't connected right click behaves normally.
    Any thoughts?

I don't quite understand your issue, either.
What you see in TM depends on how you get there. A few apps (Address Book, Mail, and iPhoto) are "fully integrated" into TM: if you start from one of them, you get a specialized display, with a version of the app's window, and sightly different options.
If you enter TM from any other app, TM will show a Finder window similar to the last Finder window (or desktop) you used, and you can navigate in the backups mostly as you can from a Finder window. The exceptions are, if you enter from a Finder window without a toolbar and/or sidebar, there's no way to make them appear from within TM. You have to exit TM, change the Finder window in the usual fashion, then re-enter TM.

  • Time Machine Screwed up my Macbook Air!

I used time machine to transfer all my old Macbook to my Macbook Air and everytime I turn on my computer I get the Candy Spinning Wheel of Death....

Migration Assistant will transfer all applications and accounts. So your initial issue (not being able to find any files, music, etc) was because they weren't copied to the account you were logged into - a new account was created and the files transferred to it.
Migration Assitant doesn't overwrite the target computer's operating system but it will copy items into the sysem's library (into the folder called Library - not the folder called System) because some programs install Internet plugins, preferences, preference files, and application support files there. I suspect that's where the problem with the beachballs of death began.
Try restarting your computer and hold down the left shift key until the grey Apple appears. This is booting into Safe Mode. If the computer lets you log in and get to the Finder without the beachball taking over that suggests one solution. If you are still getting beachballs that suggests another.

  • How long does it take for Time Machine to do a Full System Retrieve?

I have recently installed Snow Leopard 10.6.1 to find it clashes with fonts in Quark. I am now reverting to Leopard!
I have installed system disc and am now retrieving a full system backup from my Time Machine from a few days ago.. (PRE Snow Leopard)
It's been whirring away for 8 hours... (it said 50ish hours to retrieve initially) it NOW says 48 hours are left. Is this normal and should I just sit it out as it is still chugging away?
Hoping for some reassurance or some advice on what to do next...
    Thanks

Why? What kind of trouble were you having? (If there's a hardware problem of some sort, this isn't going to help.)
The computer has become more and more buggy over the past 6 mo. or so, to the point that almost every action I took in any application, even just the finder to check the date!, resulted in "beach ball". Sometimes the programs would unstick, but usually they did not - trying to get the Force Quit menu would then make the finder stall if it wasn't already stalled. In the rare event I was able to shut down normally (instead of being forced to power down), start up was just as slow as when it was forced - anywhere between 3-20 minutes, with no pattern or reason why. I looked online for clues, used Disk Utility (took a few hours itself, considered an online memory test suggestion I found online, but the idea of going through the process of turning my machine back on, waiting for it to load, waiting for it to connect to the internet, load a browser, get to the site, start the test - each would have been its own beachball. I decided it was time for the last resort option, reinstall.
The OS clean install took about 18 hours (after quoting 40 hours).
Do you mean it took 18 hours just to Erase and Install (there is no "clean install") Leopard? If so, you should stop right there. That's ridiculous. Something is very wrong with your Mac. (Normal for Snow Leopard is in the neighborhood of 45 minutes; Leopard is longer, as I recall, but not anything remotely like that).
Funny story: I had begun the archive/install process, when I found another disk that I thought had a more recent OS on it, so I decided to quit the process and start over again with that disk. I knew this was risky, but my data was backed up elsewhere, so oh well. It took a few minutes for the window popped up asking if I was sure, warning my computer might not startup again. I foolishly chose yes. As predicted, the computer wouldn't start again. I had to start up from the disk (can't remember which one now). At that point, "archive and install" was not an option - it thought my machine had nothing on it, so the only option was to just install, not reinstall. One disk was freestanding Leopard, the other was my iMac install disk - but now I can't remember which one I found 2nd, and which one I used for the final install.
So when the restart dialog came up, I chose to use Time Machine to move everything back over. It took a few minutes to calculate, then said it would take 19 hours and five minutes.
Do you mean when you were asked if you already have a Mac, and wanted to transfer your data?
Without some idea of how much data you have (30 gb? 1 tb?), there's no telling whether that's sensible.
It asked me for a language preference, then maybe one other question, and then asked me if I had a Time Machine backup and did I want to use it. I said yes, it said plug in the external drive now, I did, and away it went. I have about 120GB of data, mostly mp3s and photos. I deleted all my gaming software earlier in the week and some old OS 9 apps that somehow came over in a previous migration, this made my hard drive's finder window look sleeker, but helped nothing.
Anyone have an opinion on when I should stop this process
If it took 18 hours to +Erase and Install,+ stop it Now.
It sounds like your internal HD is failing. Disconnect everything except your keyboard and mouse.
Find the second disc that came with your Mac. It's probably labelled +Applications Install DVD+ and has instructions on it (in very tiny type) telling you how to run the +Apple Hardware Test+ (mine says boot up while holding the "D" key).
That will do a relatively fast and cursory check of your memory, hard drive, etc., and I suspect will tell you there's trouble with the hard drive.
    Report back with your results.
(Whether your backups were corrupted by whatever's wrong is hard to tell, but it's likely you'll be able to recover most, or all, of your data. So disconnect that drive until you get your Mac sorted out.)
Next funny story: I can only find a Disk 1 for my iMac. The disk had a Disk Utility, which turned out to be the same one program I used to verify/repair the drive and verify/repair permissions - another set of "everything is ok". I can't recall if there was an Apple Hardware Test on that disk. Is there a way to get that program online?
I'll go try to quit the Time Machine now and see what's on that disk.
ps: Because the issue was freezing/stalling, I never considered the hardware, so I apologize for all the idiotic choices I made in the process. No public flogging is necessary, as I am already in the process of doing that myself.
