Time Machine - Information transfer

I have transferred all Apps to my new computer using my back up on time machine and using migration assistant....all good.
My problem is that all the info ie: Firefox bookmarks, emails and email folders, files and folders have not been transferred.
Help is solving this would be greatly appreciated.

Are you looking in the right users' folders?
When you started up your new Mac, did you set up a temporary user, then use +Migration Assistant+ to transfer everything, then delete the temporary one?
If you still can't find the data, and you haven't done a Time Machine backup on your new Mac, your best bet may be to boot from your SL disc, erase your internal HD, and install OSX. When your Mac reboots, use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer everything (see #19 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum).

Time Machine Data Transfer - From FireWire Drive to Time Capsule - HELP!
I've been searching for weeks for a solution to my problem. Here's the story I've come across since I installed Leopard on Oct. 26, 2007.
I first installed Leopard on my Early 2006 MacBook and set up Time Machine with a 200GB external FireWire drive. Since then, things have been fine, until Time Machine started deleting the oldest backups. I'm a pack-rat and hated this feeling of losing data. So, I now have a few months worth of backups on my 200GB FireWire drive.
The Time Capsule is released, I finally talk myself into getting one and transferring my old data from the 200GB drive to my 1TB TC.
I did some researching through forums about how to move data from one Time Machine drive to another, so I took the concept and wanted to apply it to my Time Capsule. I made a DMG image of my 200GB drive, in order to move the data. I figured if I can make an image, copy it, and open it on the Time Capsule - all will go smoothly - just as some had mentioned they've done with external drives.
Now, I have a 164GB DMG image of my Time Machine, with no hope in sight of gaining it back. I've tried taking the image, using Disk Utility, and restoring my original 200GB external with the imaged Time Machine data, but whenever I do, I come across error messages.
In Disk Utility, I've done the following steps:
    * Disk Image is found on Time Capsule
    * I select the 200GB drive and select 'Restore'
    * I drag and drop the Disk Image to the 'Image' field
    * I drag and drop the 200GB drive into the the 'Restore' field
    * Select 'Erase Destination'
    * Select 'Restore'
    * I get the warning message that I'll erase the drive - I proceed
    * I enter my password
    Error message pops up:
"Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore."
I select the image in Disk Utility, then proceed with the following steps:
    * Click on "Image" then down to "Scan Image for Restore"
    * I enter my password
After hours of waiting, I get another error message:
    "Unable to scan. (Broken pipe)."
I'm going to see, after transferring the DMG to the Time Capsule, if I can drag-and-drop the files from the Time Capsule drive onto the 200GB hard drive.
IF anyone has any more suggestions, please let me know!

32 updates on this Mac since December 2007 - Hardware, software, OS...
They keep coming at about 6 or 7 a month. Some of them I don't care about, but several are essential. 10.5.3 has been seeded to the testers a couple of times and will probably show up in the next few weeks. Jaguar wasn't worth a d*mn until 10.2.6, Panther about 10.3.4, Tiger about 10.4.4 - I'd say we are ahead or on schedule Too bad I can't get Apple to fix Spaces. I wish they'd focus on what I want but I guess some take more time than others.

I have an iMac with Microsoft Office (and several other licenced softs) and an HD - Time Machine that backup all the stuff. I'm buying a MacBook Pro and I would to know that if I use the Time Machine to transfer all my stuff, the Microsof Office will work normally or if I need to reinstall it with another licence?

You do not need a new license. The license file will be found in /Library/Preferences/ and is named, com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist. Be sure it gets transferred and you will be fine. I see no reason why the file would not be in your Time Machine backup nor any reason why it would be restored.
Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine. You may need help figuring out how to restore your current backup to a new machine.

  • Time machine file transfer very slow during OSX 10.7 re-install

I am using a macbook pro, and was running 10.7. (not sure exact version, and cannot look now, but should have been up to date)  I tried the free upgrade to Mavericks, but it failed and said I had a disk error.  At this point I could not boot back to 10.7 so I booted with apple-R.  I tried to do a repair from disk utility but that failed so I erased my hard drive.  Then I proceeded with an install of 10.7, which proceeded fine.  I got  to a point where it asked about transferring files, (forget the exact wording) and I said to use my time machine backup (from right before I tried the upgrade - backup was 80GB) and I started that.  It has been 16 hours and it still has not finished.  The external hard drive (Lacie)  clicks / whirs, and I see signs of very slow progress... (seems to be at about 80% now judging by the progress bar) but it can go hours without any noticeable change.  The "time remaining" information is variable -- going up and down -- and is clearly not correct-- has said 1.5 to 2.5 hours for the last 12 hours
Any ideas?  should I just wait a few more days     should I abort and restart the file transfer (if so, what is the best way to do this?)
I cannot provide details on the computer since it is still busily restoring (I hope), but it is roughly 3-4 years old, lots of free space on hard drive (>100GB),

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • I uses Time Machine to transfer files and program from old to new MacBook Pro. Aperture doesn't work. Every time I open Aperture the computer need me to key in Serial number. How do I fix it.

    Hi There,
I purchased a new MacBook Pro Retina 15". Since I am using MacBook Pro and I uses Time Machine for backup files and program. Store saleman tell me I can retore my existing program and files from old MacBook Pro to new MacBook Pro computer. After files transfer it seem to be OK. But only Aperture has a problem when every time I open Aperture to edit photos, MacBook Pro ask me to key in the Aperture Serial Number that made me so inconvinent. Did any one have meet this problem and can someone teach me how to fix it, Thanks.
    Nelson

Either the license files were not transferred or it has to be relicensed.
Remove and then re-install aperture. On an rMBP this should take only a couple of minutes.

  • How do you install CS5 onto a new computer without Time Machine/file transfer

I'm not getting a new computer, but my current one is getting a little old (Macbook Pro V. 10.6.8) and I'm afraid it might crash if I download the newest Maverick system, which is why I want to make absolutely sure I'm able to save and transfer all my old files and CS5 Creative Suite programs if this indeed happens. I don't trust Time Machine to do it; my boss had this happen and Time Machine did not transfer the Adobe programs. I also don't want to rely on Time Machine and any other file transfer (which all new Macs offer) because I've had brand new computers crash because of old corrupt files from my old computer converting over, and the Apple people said it's a bad idea (which would have been nice to know BEFORE the computer crashed and everything. . .) I've been told you can only use the CD to install CS5 onto your computer twice, which I've already done (thanks to my brand new computer crashing once already). So I would like to know how it's possible to install the program onto a new computer should this one crash, without the use of file transfer or Time Machine. I have no interest in upgrading to CC.
    Thanks!

Avoid using Time Machine for re-installing Adobe software. It rarely works and usually breaks the activation mechanism.
I've been told you can only use the CD to install CS5 onto your computer twice,
    Not quite.
You can install the software as many times as you like but you can only activate the software for use on a maximum of two computers at the same time.
To re-install you will need your CS5 serial number.
Download the installer from Download CS5 products
Install then enter your serial number when prompted.

  • Time machine file transfer to new hard drive has stalled

I recently had the internal hard drive on my 2009 macbook pro replaced and OS X 10.9 installed (old hard drive had OS X 10.6). Upon starting it for the first time I was prompted to transfer files from My old hard drive using my Time Machine backup.  The transfer seems to be about 95% complete and has taken about 26 hours so far.  It says it is in the process of transferring files from my Applications folder, but there seems to have been no progress in the last 8 hours or so, and the estimated time to completion (5 hours and 3 minutes) has not changed.   It appears as though the transfer has stalled.  What should I do?  What will happen if I pull then plug on the external hard drive?  Is there another way to interrupt the process?  Is it normal that it's taking this long?

If I were in your situation, I would erase the HDD and reinstall the OSX.  Then I would use 'Setup Assistant' per the instructions here:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html
Read the directions carefully before you commit.
Also understand that you may have PPC applications which work with Snow Leopard (10.6) and will not with Mavericks.  You may want to consider installing Snow Leopard instead.  Read these:

  • Time machine wont transfer all my picture

My Mac crashed and I used time machine to get my pictures from my old disk to my ny macbook air. But my newest albums wont show my pictures, it just shows a warning triangle. When i look thorugh the album I can see the pictures, but just for a second! But my old albums work just fine!

    I'd try that restore again.
The ! shows up when iPhoto loses the link to the Original file.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • Time Machine: iPhoto transfer OS 10.5 to 10.7

I am attempting to transfer my iPhotos from my external HD (Time Machine (OS 10.5)) to my Pro (10.7), but having issues.  I see the iPhotos file, but do not get the option to retrieve/restore it; how do I get the file?

  • HT201250 using time machine to transfer files from mac to mac

i just bought the new iMac 27inch.  My previous Mac was Mac OSX Version 10.6.8.  I want to transfer files from my old mac to my new mac.  I learned Migration Assistant does not support this transfer because my old Mac is too old.
I want to transfer photos that are on my old mac --- such as my itunes, photos that are in iPhoto and CS 5.0, and a few other files on desk top and in documents.
    What do i do?

What if you won't have both computers at the same time. In my situation I'm selling my machine and using the money to purchase a new machine. If I backup with time machine and then run migration assistant on the new machine can't I copy everything over to the new computer with time machine?

  • Time machine data transfer to an external drive.

    Hello,
I have been using time machine to backup to a 500 gig Internal hard drive. Now I want to use that Hard drive for a Windows partition. To that end, I recently purchased a Buffalo 2-500 gigs external hard drive. Now how do I transfer the full data from the internal time machine'd hard drive to the external, and continue to use the external hard drives for time machine? Also, should I somehow "link" the two externals to backup across both when one gets full?

    HandbellRingr,
I'm going to add some clarification to V.K.'s excellent instructions...
Before attempting to "restore" your TM backup volume to another drive, use Disk Utility to create a new partition map on the new drive:
First, eject and disconnect your Time Machine backup drive, then connect and mount the new drive. In Disk Utility, select the new drive (the drive, not the named volume that will appear indented below the drive) in the list on the left, and switch to the "Erase" tab. Choose "Mac OS Extended (journaled)" from the pull-down menu, then click "Erase." Provided you have the drive selected when you do this, it will write a new partition map, compatible with OS X and Time Machine, on the new drive, thus insuring that you don't run into problems when restoring.
Once you have erased the drive, switch to the "Restore" pane. Turn off Time Machine, then connect your Time Machine backup drive. When it mounts and shows up in Disk Utility, drag the named volume on which your Time Machine backup is stored from the list on the left to the "Source" field in the body of the Disk Utility window (do not attempt to drag it from the Finder into the window). Next, drag the named volume on your new external drive from the list on the left into the "Destination" field. Check the box labeled "Erase destination," then click "Restore." It'll take a while.

  • Time Machine informs me I don't have permission to open trashed folders, when Iam the sole user of my  20" imac.

I upgraded to Lion, and have encountered problems with passwords needed often in mail, calendar and Time machine restores.

  • Time Machine Backup transfer to another external drive

    Hi all,
I keep my Time Machine backups on an external HDD drive (portable USB).  I have a larger drive with more space, and wanted to copy my the backup to the larger drive.
My the Time Machine backup file folder is around 750GB.  When copying the Backups.backupdb file over to the new HDD the process hangs in Finder.  I wonder if there a way to successfully copy it, since the Finder does not seem happy to work with such large chunks of data.
    Thanks

Although Apple documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
This technique will only work if the volume you're copying to is the same size, or larger than, the one you're copying from.
First, open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button. You may have to unlock the settings first by clicking the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Authenticate as an administrator.
Delete the volume you're going to copy from the list of backup destinations. Then turn Time Machine OFF.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased. That shouldn't be a problem, because you don't want to mix backup and non-backup data on the same drive anyway.
If the volume you're copying was encrypted by Time Machine, you may have to unlock it first. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar of the Disk Utility window.
Turn Time Machine back ON and select the new volume as a backup destination. You can also continue to use the old volume, if you wish. The two will be alternated when both are available.
CAUTION: If the volume you're copying is corrupt, as shown by Repair Disk or Verify Disk in Disk Utility, then that corruption will be copied to the new drive. Don't copy data from a corrupt volume on a malfunctioning drive. Put the drive aside and don't use it until you're sure you'll no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and take it to a recycling center. Do the same if the Restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • Using Time Machine to transfer Logic and Plugins to a new Mac

    Hey there folks,
I'm about to invest in a new Mac Pro to upgrade from my Imac 2010 Quad Core Intel I7.  I just have a question regarding using time machine to restore my settings that were on my Imac to the Mac Pro...
I've heard that time machine backs up everything, but i've also heard that it might not back up things like all my Logic 3rd party plugins (Waves stuff for example).  And i will have to enter in all the serial no's again etc...does anyone know if this is the case?  Will i have to reinstall Logic 9 and all my plugins again?  Or will time machine backup the Applications and plugins so i can use them straight away?
    Many thanks!

Google Pondini's Setup Assistant tips, you will find migrating your settings, data and apps is extremely simple.
