Time Machine is listed as excluded folder after migration

I just bought a new iMac and used Time Machine to migrate files and folders over. The first time the new iMac attempted to do a Time Machine backup, I clicked for it to inherit backup history. I just entered Time Machine to look for a file that existed prior to the migration and my backups only go back to the date of the migration, about 2 days ago. However, when I go into Finder and click on Time Machine, it has all of my old backups in folders and I am able to open each folder and see the backups/contents of each day prior to migration. Also, when I click on options in Time Machine System Preferences, it has Time Machine listed as an excluded folder for back up.
How can I get the Time Machine application to recognize the folders saved on the Time Machine external harddrive, i.e., I want to click on Time Machine in the dock and view old backups rather than go into Finder and search the folders for each back up?
Thanks!!

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. The Time Machine volume itself is always excluded from backup. That has nothing to do with what I believe to be your problem, which is that you can't directly access snapshots of your old boot volume where you expect them to be in the time-travel view. That's the subject of the page I linked to.
The snapshots are grayed because they contain no data from your new boot volume. You have to go up to the Computer level, then navigate to the snapshot you want to restore from, and then down to the files.

Time Machine can't find external drive after installing Lion. I have a Laice 1 terabyte external drive that worked fine with Snow Leopard and now no show ... tried connecting it to front port and Mac Pro can't see it. Also lost Office,Quicken, and Final Cut Pro  says: " You can't open application because Power PC apps are no longer supported" this is Not a good surprise!

Does the drive work when just directly connected? If so, have you prepped the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Time machine backups up the Downloads folder every backup

On my current and previous MBP, for some reason, after some event changes something, Time Machine decides that my Downloads folder has changed between every backup. Not just a file, but the entire folder - all 20GB of it - and backs it up again and again and again... I've looked to see if there's any hidden meta data associated with the Downloads folder (ls -l@d ~/Downloads), and there is none.
The only thing I've been able to do is to copy the contents of my Downloads folder to an external drive. Log out as my normal user and log back in as another admin user. Then I delete the Downloads folder of my regular user. Recreate the Downloads folder and copy the content of my external copy back to the new Downloads folder. After that, TM does one full backup and after that goes back to making regular sized backups ... for a while. After some indeterminate event happens, I start the cycle again.

  • Time Machine error while creating backup folder

Several times today I have gotten a popup message. "Time Machine error while creating backup folder".  I click OK, and then the message appears again after a hour or so.  I am using a WD My Book external drive as my backup media.  I looked at the drive in Finder and the older (yesterday and beyond) backup folders are there.

  • Time Machine not backing up user folder

After a Mavericks update to version 10.9.3 i have noticed that Time Machine is not displying the folder in T.M disc image, therfore unable to drag specific files out without going in to the T.M app, is there a way to make this folder visible,

It has to be said that you should use the TM app to restore files rather than browsing through TM's backups with the Finder and dragging files out. There can be issues with permissions and other file attributes.

  • Time Machine not backing up Applications folder

    Hi,
I've noticed that when I wanted to restore an application from a previous Time Machine backup that the Apps folder in TM was greyed out. No applications were found for the full history of the backup. I thought it might be an issue with the backup so I deleted it and set TM to backup again (with encryption switched on). On the new backup I also see that the Apps folder is empty. I have checked the TM options and nothing has been excluded so everything should be backed up. I also have an iMac which seems to be able to backup fine.
I'm backing up to an external HD attached to my Mac book pro using Mountain Lion. I have searched online but haven't found any articles on this issue. Can someone offer any help or a recommendation to fix this weird issue?
    Regards,
    Miles

It seems that deleting all of the preference files com.apple.timemachine.* has cured the problem. The backup now includes the applications.
One other interesting issue did pop up. I backed up directly to an external hard disk to maximize the speed. I then attached the HD to my time capsule however Time Machine wouldn't recognise or use that backup when I selected the disk in the Time Machine options. So I had to delete the backup and then backup again but though the time capsule with the Hd attached. Strange.

I used Time Machine to recover my Pictures folder. This created a folder called Pictures (original) but I cannot open it.  There is a do not enter roadsign, red disk and white bar on it.  How can I see the contents?

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Time Machine doesn't recognize old sparsebundle after new logic board

Installed new logic board in pre-Isight 20" iMac due to capacitor swelling and kernel panic. I had also erased the internal HD. I was able to restore all my files to internal HD from Time Machine backup on the 1TB Time Capsule. Now I'm trying to back up my restored iMac to Time Capsule, but there is insufficient space. Time Capsule has three sparsebundle files: one for the 20"iMac prior to new logic board, one for a Powerbook, and one for a newer 24"iMac. Time Machine wants to create a new sparsebundle for the restored iMac, but there is not enough room and I would like it use the residing sparsebundle so that I will have backups prior to the point the new logic board was installed. I tried just changing the name of the old IMac Time Capsule sparsebundle file to the new sparsebundle filename that Time Machine creates when attempting backup, but that did not work. Any suggestions?

    1. I thought of just deleting the old sparsebundle in order to make room, but it was a less elegant solution because: a) I'd have to do a complete (i.e. lengthy) backup when really only a few things have changed (mostly software updates) since the restore. b)if something should go wrong with that process, then I've lost my backup file to restore the computer. True, I could archive the old sparsebundle to another drive, and then delete it from the time capsule, but somehow I think there should be a quicker, less labor intensive way that doesn't involve bringing in another hard drive.
    2. I believe you can restore any Mac with any time machine backup. If you boot from the system disk, go to utilities, and select restore from time machine backup, it then allows you to pick any of the files on the disk that time machine has backed up to. After all, even though Time Machine thinks this is a new computer, the restore that I just did makes it essentially the same computer that I had before the failure of the logic board--the desktop looks exactly the same. BTW, the Apple authorized service center that did the logic board replacement had put a clean version of 10.6 on the internal hard drive, and I was unable to use that system to do the restore--it just hung up. I had to do the restore using my system disk CD (and basically downgrading to system 10.5.8)

  • Does time machine work with the trash folder?

Does time machine work with the trash folder? So if I have the entire aperture library backed up to the time machine. Is it safe to empty the trash folder in aperture? I am able to recover files from time machine later?

So make a top-level Project called "_Circular File".  Put Images in there that you what to have out of your way but not discarded.
It really is good and proper to treat the Trash as trash.  I instruct everyone to _empty_ the Aperture Trash at the end of _every_ session.  The reason is this: it is the only time you will remember whether it is safe to delete the items in there.  If you wait, you will then waste time trying to answer "Did I really mean to throw that out?" or, periodically, you'll give up trying to remember, and will empty the Trash without reviewing it.  At the end of every session, examine the Trash, confirm that the items there are trash, and empty it.
Shocking, perhaps, but you should also empty your system trash every day.  The real-life equivalents are good guides here.  No-one in an office hoards their trash.  If you mean to throw something out, throw it out.  If you don't mean to throw it out, do not put it in the trash.
I don't know how TM handles the Aperture Trash.  I do know, however, that I would not expect this behavior to remain consistent, and would absolutely recommend against a workflow based on it.

  • HT204350 USB Time Machine backup drive not visble in Mavericks Migration Assistant

    Hi all,
Yesterday I updated my dad's iMac from Snow Leopard (SL) to Mavericks. Seemed to work ok apart from the fact that turning on iCloud wiped out the calendars. In order to get the calendars back I restored from the most recent SL Time Machine backup. This turned out to be a big mistake! It did get the calendars back but stopped all programs not included in the OS X install to stop working!
I then managed to get a bootable flash drive installer for Mavericks sorted out and installed a fresh copy of Mavericks on the computer with the plan of using Migration Assistant to bring all my dad's files, settings, etc over. The problem is that when I open Migration Assistant and try to migrate from the USB Time Machine backup drive, the drive doesn't show up in the list.
I have also tried restoring from the Time Machine backups that were made straight after the upgrade to Mavericks as I have exported copies of the calendars now and that was the only issue at the time but when I do that the restore fails after about 4.5% progress.
Any help would be amazing as my dad runs two small businesses with the computer and the down time causing quite a few issues.
    Thanksin advance!

If you synchronize any of your calendars with a server such as iCloud, disable that synchronization. Quit Calendar.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Enter Time Machine and restore that folder from the snapshot you want.
Relaunch Calendar and test. Your calendars should be as they were when the snapshot was taken. If you don't sync with a server, stop here. If you do sync some of the calendars with a server, select each one in turn and then select
    File ▹ Export ▹ Export…
from the menu bar. You'll get ICS files with the filename extension ".ics". Re-enable sync. Usually, all the calendars you just restored will be deleted. That's not a problem. Create a new calendar on the server for each one you exported and want to sync:
    File ▹ New Calendar
Then import the calendar from the corresponding ICS file by double-clicking it. Follow the prompts to import the new events to the calendar you just created. For calendars that you don't want to sync, just import them again. They'll appear in the calendar list under On My Mac.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

When migrating from time machine to my new hard drive, it migrates the first back-up I made several years ago. How can I migrate the latest back-up ? I need time machine to migrate the latest back-up. Should I delete the older back-ups ?

As noondaywitch says, it should use the latest backup.

It sounds like there are two separate sets, and you're not connected to the right set.

  • When using Time Machine to restore some Mac Mails, after clicking restore, a message shows "restoring 480 mesages.  They are supposed to appear on Mac Mail sidebar in a special folder.  They are not there and I have no idea where they are?  Would apprecia

I am having a problem with the Time Machine in restoring Mac Mail back to a certain date. Everything works fine, with Mac Mail the active application and entering Time Machine, and I have found the mail file after the location process is done, then I hit Restore and there is a messages "restoring 480 messages", but I cannot locate them anywhere. What is suppose to happen is that a special file should appear in the sidebar of Mac Mail in the section On My Mac.  Any suggestion would be appreciated.
    I use Mountain Lion.

Although you can restore messages from a Time Machine snapshot within the Mail application, it generally won't work with messages that were saved by an older version of Mail. In that case, you have to use an alternative method.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Inside that folder are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use. Decide which ones you want to restore messages from.
Enter Time Machine and scroll back to the snapshot you want. Select the account folders you want and then selectRestore ... to... from the action menu (gear icon) in the toolbar of the snapshot window. Restore the folders to the Desktop, not to their original location.
From the Mail menu bar, select
    File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Import from the mailboxes in the folders you restored to the Desktop. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest. Then delete the folders on the Desktop.

  • Time Machine v.1 lost file folder names all the way back to "the beginning of time"

I was experiencing some increasingly erratic system problems with my White 2006 iMac running OS 10.5.8. My guess is that these problems were due to power outages cutting power to the iMac while it was in use.
    - I tried Disk Utility from the Install Disk and it cleaned the HD but when I ran Verify Disk from Disk Utility off the HD it reported errors and I continued having problems.
--  I decided to wipe the HD and reinstall everything.
--- The first thing I did was backup with Time Machine v.1 and then disconnect the backup drive.
---  After reloading the OS and upgrades I ran Verify Disk from Disk Utility off the HD and it reported no errors.
----   Skipping all the headache a reinstall entailed ... I reloaded my files from the external backup drive Time Machine backups by grabbing the folders and pulling them to the cleaned HD.
-----     I found large portions of files names missing. They look to be exclusively file names starting with a number that I use to order files ( 01. , 02. , 03. ... etc) as opposed to alphabetical listing.
-----     These files - so far - are all located on a single folder branch. Meaning: as I follow the folder tree down I get to a list of project folders and some or all are missing everything but the starting number. I wrote this off as something to do with the hard drive operation problem but ...
------      ... all the same backup folders in Time Machine on my Seagate GoFlex have also lost their names all the way back for 2 years, when I started using Time Machine and the GoFlex.
------      I know for a for a fact the folder names were intact before I cleaned the iMac HD since I regularly use those files.

They aren't what they appear to be on the TM, most are aliases to aliases to aliases when files are changed, I think only TM understands how/where the files are actually stored.
Later versions of the OS with Restore Partitions can Restore also
Do run DU on the TM drive... it certainly can't hurt at this point.
I recommend cloning your drives instead of TM, not only can you copy files/folders over if needed, you can actually boot from your backup & continue working, or even clone back to the Internal...

  • Time Machine - Shows 0 items backed up after finishing full backup

I just completed a full backup onto my Time Machine. (After completely erasing it.) If I enter the Time Machine, it shows '0' items in the backup...ie, no list of files.
If I use the finder and click on 'Time Machine Backups'...I am able to see that in fact 300GB of data was backed up.
I'm confused! I've used time machine before and was expecting to see a complete inventory of all the files after I enter Time Machine...

The default is where you are when you +Enter Time Machine.+
If you're on your Desktop (or a Finder window of your Desktop), that's what you'll see in the +Star Wars+ display.
If you start on a Finder window of, say, your home folder, or your Document folder, or your Computer name, that's what you'll see in the +Star Wars+ display.

  • Time Machine only backing up Users folder

Since upgrding to Mountain Lion my Time Machine is now only backing up my ~/users/ folders and not the whole hard drive like it used to.
Nothing is excluded in Time Machine settings.
Has anybody else got this same scenario? I'm wondering if it's an isseu on my MacBook or if it's by design with Mountain Lion.
Hopefully it's not by design as none of my Application Preferences and other files in Library are being backed up

My other Mac was fine, but comparing the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist files of the two machines reveals something interesting.
On the problematic Mac (Mac #1), before I deleted the .plist, all of the system paths (/Applications, /Library, etc.) somehow got added to ExcludeByPath on or around August 30. After deleting the .plist and starting fresh, the ExcludeByPath key and values are gone, as is expected.
But on Mac #2 (the Mac with no Time Machine problem), those exact same paths that were under ExcludeByPath on Mac #1 are specifically enumerated under IncludeByPath, whereas they are not specifically listed after starting fresh on Mac #1. (It's possible these existed on Mac #2 before my upgrade to 10.8.)
If the system paths were enumerated under IncludeByPath on Mac #1 prior to starting fresh, either the system, Time Machine, or another app changed IncludeByPath to ExcludeByPath. I cannot verify if IncludeByPath was in Mac #1's .plist because I no longer have the historical data.
    In summary:
Mac #1 (Mac that stopped archiving system files):
.plist contained system paths under ExcludeByPath
after deleting .plist and resetting Time Machine, .plist no longer contains ExcludeByPath
before and after resetting TM, IncludeByPath was/is absent
Mac #2 (Mac with no TM issue):
system paths specifically listed under IncludeByPath
