Time Machine is proof that "software doesn't have to suck".

Last Saturday, the hard disk on my iMac crapped out. I was in a major panic, since even though I have a Time Machine drive, my many years of experience lead me to believe that I was still in trouble, and that at best, it would be a lot of work to recover.
So yesterday, Apple Care sent someone to my house (to my HOUSE!) to replace the disk, which took about 45 minutes. Fired up the iMac, and after formatting the new disk, clicked on "Restore from Backup".
Two hours later, my iMac was completely restored! I didn't even have to change so much as a user preference. Nothing was missing, nothing needed to be reinstalled. The only thing I had to do was re-authorize with iTunes, but otherwise, I was completely back in business.
With other operating systems, I would have spent weeks reinstalling apps, reworking configurations, reinstalling security patches, and trying to figure out how to import my backup data into the reinstalled apps.
Apple got it right with Time Machine.

It's never a question of IF, just WHEN a mechanical device like a hard drive will fail. Smart people have multiple backup strategies to protect their important data. Not bragging but I now have a spreadsheet file that was created in 1982 with Visicalc on an Apple II+ that is happily living on my Intel iMac and opens with Numbers just fine (after many conversions, of course). In those 27 years I have experienced a number of hardware failures, including hard disk failures, RAM failures, etc. But I have multiple backups of that file (and Quicken data files too) that are never more than a couple of hours old, stored locally and in the "cloud". Older backups are stored off site. Same goes for iTunes library, iPhoto library.
If it's important to you, back it up. There's absolutely no excuse.

I have had this problem with time machine on OS X Lion also.
About your only options are to Erase that drive then make a new TM backup or buy a new larger external drive.
Time machine is supposed to delete older backups to make room for new ones but in my experience that doesn't happen with the Lion TM system. Eraing the drive was what I had to do.

  • Yeah. Got a time machine backup, should that work? Thanks.

Yeah. Got a time machine backup, should that work? Thanks.

You can schedule backups in CCC for whatever you like. I run two CCC clones on separate disks - a weekly backup and a daily backup. You could have an hourly backup too, if you wish. You can choose to back up on some days and not others (e.g., you might not do any work on the weekend, so see no point in having a backup schedule run on those days. In this regard, CCC is far more flexible than TM.
It's also more versatile in the backup options it will allow you. Once you've restored your system to the good, I would forget about only cloning your User account, and clone your entire internal disk. This is what most people do I believe, because not only will this copy everything (literally, clone your disk) unlike Time Machine (which skips certain items), it will also make your backup bootable (again unlike Time Machine).
That menas if your internal disk ever goes kaputt, or you wreck your system with an update or upgrade, you can simply boot back into your system in minutes by connecting the clone.
About the only advantage I see that TM has over a bootable clone is the 'star wars/versions' type interface, which makes restoring individual files much simpler and user friendly than a clone (but since it's not that hard to do it with CCC anyway, that personally doesn't bother me too much). Others on this board will argue that TM is faster (not in my experience) and causes less wear on your drive (mines happily going 3 years later, but there's no way to empirically test this claim, AFAIK).

Where does time machine store content that would be found in the Finder window under "All Images, All Movies, All Documents"? Also, I have many Garageband projects and mp3 files I can't find.

Easiest way to find time machine files is to open up the folder or application(works for email and iphoto)  they were in - then click on time machine ICON or enter time machine from the time machine menu to go back through the files.

My time machine will not back up. I get a Time Machine Error message that reads: "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Backup/(myname)'sMacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.
I have not been able to back up for two weeks, I think this occurred after an update to the operating system, but I am unsure.
How do I correct this problem?

Have you tried restarting the computer? Also, see Time Machine Error from this pages sidebar under More Like This.

  • Can I force my computer to ignore the fact that it doesn't have 'permission' to change certain files and compress them anyway?

I'm trying to compress everything on my external USB hard disk using the File> Compress Items option in the Finder. However, every time I try this, it thinks for a little while and then tells me it can't do it because it doesn't have 'permission' to edit such-and-such a file. I have gone into the 'Get Info' panel for the hard disk and tried changing the permissions to read & write for my own account, 'staff', and 'everyone', checked the checkbox for 'Ignore ownership on this volume', and chosen 'Apply to enclosed items...' from the little gear/cog menu under 'Sharing & Permissions' section of the 'Get Info' panel. I have also tried sending the problematic files to the trash, but every time I do so, when I select 'Compress items' again, it just finds more files that it doesn't have 'permission' to edit. I cannot 'repair disk permissions' from disk utility, and when I select 'repair disk', it says that there is nothing wrong.
There is no reason that I shouldn't have 'permission' to edit these files. They are all my own documents and photos etc, or ones that have been downloaded from the internet. The computer is not connected to any kind of network, and there is only one user account on the computer, which is an 'administrator' type account.
My question is -- how do I bypass this 'permissions' problem? Is there a way to 'force' compress, like when there is a problem emptying the trash and you can choose to 'Force Empty Trash'?
Thanks in advance for any aid or advice,
    lsrw.

You caant get the'a from he'a.
You could have it wake at 2:55 and then shutdown at 3:00 but then it won't wake in the morning.
Not shure why you want to shut down instead of sleep.  It uses only a small amount energy sleeping with the display off.  It would probably use more energy to have it wake up in the morning before you get there than to have it sleep all night.
If you are having battery issues you should replace the battery.  I have seen it stated elsewhere in this community as batteries go bad they can damage the system.  Your's might not be near that state but you should consider replacing it.
With it plugged in there should be no difference in the charge on the battery whether it is sleeping or shutdown.  It charges in both states and maintains a full charge while plugged in.

The recent update in Yosemite (10.10.3) is causing some issues for some users.
Try a complete network power cycle as follows:
Power off each and every device on your network......modem, Time Capsule, computers, printers, etc......in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Power up the modem and let it run 2-3 minutes
Then, power up the next device that is connected to the modem an let it run a full minute
Then, continue to power up devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is back up
    Check the network
Wait for a backup to occur and report on your results

hi all, i bought iPhone 4s. while am trying to access my Appstore Genius app appearing that it doesn't have any recommendations. could any one solve my prob?

After some troubleshooting, I decided to order a new battery.  I replaced the battery and was then able to get it to restore, however--after I restore it and it comes time to restart the phone, it gets stuck and doesn't turn on.
Sorry, your repair ruined the iPhone.
She does not have apple care and even though she loved this device, she isn't going to buy another iPhone because of all the problems shes had with this one (it's just over a year old).
After you ruined the iPhone with DIY, Apple won't touch it anymore. You should have asked before all these had happened.
I'm an android user myself and I love rooting/flashing new ROMS, so if jailbreaking her phone or doing some kind of super-restore with 3rd party programs might help, I'm all for it-

    I want Adobe flash.  I didn't realize that iPad2 doesn't have it.

It's been all over discussion boards, news sites, and review sites since before iOS was called iOS. You purchased an expensive toy without doing your homework.
You can work around the lack of Flash support on iOS devices if you mainly want to see Flash-based web video. Look for Safari-replacement browser apps in the iTunes App Store - many advertise being able to play Flash video.

    Hi,
Does this issue occur when you manually archive items in Outlook, do you drag them into the archive folder?
The first thing I wonder is if the .pst file has been corrupted, please run Scanpst.exe to repair the archive .pst file:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272227/en-us
Please logon your Webmail(owa), check if the emails are available. If the emails have been moved and Outlook Client hasn't synced yet, this issue may occur as well.
We can also create a new .pst file to archive the file, check if the issue persists.
For more information, we can refer to Archive items manually:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/outlook-help/archive-items-manually-HA010355564.aspx
When you browse to the archive file in step 5, type in a new .pst file name.
If my understanding is not accurate, please detail your scenario and provide the exact error message.

  • Time Machine Keeps Thinking That it's a New Backup

We're running Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini, and are using an external FW drive for Time Machine backups of the server and shared data only, no client backups. Time Machine has not worked since we setup the Mac Mini, but was working well on the previous server using Leopard Server. Here are the troubleshooting steps I've taken, as well as the latest log.
Erased and re-setup the Time Machine drive using another drive name. I've encountered issues where Time Machine doesn't like to use the same drive name after a migration.
    Repaired permissions
    Trashed Time Machine preferences
Made sure that all updates are applied
Made sure date and time are correct on the server
Made sure that the backup hard drive was not damaged or corrupted
    The error:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/Graphics Backup/Backups.backupdb
Starting pre-backup thinning: 235.12 GB requested (including padding). 164.53 GB available
No expired backups exist - deleting oldest backups to make room
Error: backup disk is full - all 0 possible backups were removed, but space is still needed
    Backup failed
Every time it fails, I wipe the drive and the preferences hoping that something will fall in to place on the next backup attempt. This happens every time after we complete an initial new backup where Time Machine doesn't recognize that there is an existing backup for the server on the external drive and that it only needs to create an incremental. It's extremely frustrating. We're not using any type of software that is using any crazy sql databases that would be flexing while backing up. Shoot, we have it set to backup at 5AM when no one is in the office nor connected remotely (which we don't allow nor have setup anyway). We are merely using the server for a share point for our digital assets (overkill, but not my idea). Indexing of the initial backup occurs in a reasonable time. Super frustrated at this point.

Still having this issue. Now with TWO servers, two different clients. Nothing had changed prior to this error.

  • My time machine backup (on external hdd) doesn't see my new internal HDD.

I just installed a new HDD and RAM in my mid-09 MBP. When I try and restore from a time machine backup on an external drive, I only get the option to install it on the other partition on that drive - my new internal drive doesn't even appear as an option. • Is there Time machine compatible PC server software?

I'm a photographer and running a dual hard drive Macbook Pro and I've reached the point where my NAS backup drive is not big enough for Time Machine to backup to. In order for me to upgrade the backup drive I'm looking at about £500 ($750) as I need one big enough not just big enough.
I have an old PC that is currently running Windows Server and is connected to my network, which obviously isn't Time Machine compatible. As buying HDD is cheaper than pre-boxed NAS drives, I wanted to use this instead.
Is there any server software that is compatible with Time Machine and I can use to build a home server? If not, I'd best start saving and hope my laptop doesn't crash or get stolen.
    Thanks in advance.

No, there's no supported means to target archival storage onto a Windows box with Time Machine.
As you're likely aware, Time Machine only supports specific devices as targets, and the file server are currently OS X Server, Time Capsule devices, and the most recent generation of AirPort Extreme devices with attached disks.  Not Windows Server boxes, Linux or other gear.
More than a few folks and a few discussions and various hackery have allowed random devices to appear to work (and it's possible your NAS device has seen this same hackery), but whether those configurations will continue to work or will react appropriately during the inevitable network and device glitches is very far from certain.  Among these sequences, whole-disk installs and related system restorations are key, but are also something that doesn't necessarily get thoroughly tested.
A Mac Mini running OS X Server can host a fair amount of connected storage, if you decide to replace or supplement your NAS.
For more information on Time Machine, start reading here.
It is possible to roll your own backups and to use third-party tools to perform the backups onto remote devices, and one of the more common recommendations here are based on a command line tool known as rsync.  Copy your files over, and either acquire or custom-create your own archival processing.  (If you're interested, search for previous discussions of rsync and backups for some of the available options, and there are tools and scripts available.  rsync is pretty ugly to get going initially — it's arcane — but it works pretty well, and various folks have already figured out the syntax and posted example scripts.)  Carbon Copy Cloner is an alternative to Time Machine, and there are others.
On the subject of creating your own custom software for these and related tasks, it's also possible to use software that targets photo studios and their related processing, and that manages the photos and videos and other assets, and that can manage backups and related processing, and various of these will deal with reprints and purchases and related.  That's a bit further along than a backup device or a Time Machine backup, but it's something that might replace the requirements.  (You probably don't care nearly as much about OS X and most other stuff here as that can be re-downloaded or reinstalled, it's your photos and your customer data that are key here, and that are not replaceable.  That stuff is the core target for your backups.)
