Time Machine Issue with new system board.

OK MAC Fans here is an issue that I discovered with Time Machine (TM).
First I have a 17” MacBookPro that has two 1TB external HDs and a 30” monitor attached to it.
Something happened to my system and the system board had to be replaced.
The Mac was sent to TX and a new system board was put in it and the very latest OS (10.5.2) was installed on the hard drive.
The Apple store added my profile so you think everything would be good?
Wrong!
None of my applications made it through.
But I was thinking let just use Time Machine to restore them. WRONG in a way.
The first thing I did when I got home was set up TM. I pointed TM to the external HD that has all of the previous backup files and TM wanted to backup the system. During the backup I notice that TM created a new directory for the backup files.
The name of the directory was the name of my MAC. The old directory was also the name of my MAC but with the new OS software release it was stated that you could not use any special characters when naming your MAC or TM may not recognize your backup files (there is a note on this under support).
The new name is FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 the old name was Firstname Lastname’s MacBookPro 17”. TM created a new directory named FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 and this was the only files that are visible in TM.
I deleted the new directory and renamed my MAC back to the old name and TM created a NEW directory with the old name. Now there were 2 directories with the same “old” name. I can not get TM to use the old directory and display the old backup files.
I was able to drag and drop the files and applications I needed from the previous backup folders back to where I needed them to be so all is not lost but I can not restore files from TM.
Also I renamed my MAC back to FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 and TM automatically changed the name of the new directory to the new name.
I tried to drag old backup folders from the old TM directory to the new TM directory but received an error that the files can not be modified.
The only thing that I can think is that when the system board was replaced TM got confused and did not recognize it as the same system. So now I am starting my backup history all over again. The old backup files are good, the only thing is that I have to drag and drop items I want from those folders to the location I want. I can not use the old backup files in TM.
Dose any one have a magic pill (red or blue) I can take to make the old files visible in TM?

I decided not to worry about the syncing my TM. I was just at the Apple store and they have decided to replace my MacBookPro. I am going to start my backups on the new system all over again. I know I can drag and drop files that I want from the old files to the new system if I want and that will be go enough.

    Hi all,
after updating to 10.6.8 I noticed a Time Machine issue.
Backup takes very long but only a few MB were backed up.
And after it was finished, Finder crashed and I had to do a hard reset.
There´s also a "in progress" file on my USB Backup HDD after finishing.
Checking my HDD´s and repairing it wasn´t the problem.
Today I tried a new USB HDD to make a fresh Backup via Time Machine.
After a few hours it was finished, but only 7,8MB were backed up and still there is an "in progress" file on my new Backup HDD.
    Here´s a troubleshoot:

    Can anyone help me?

A  whole  lot  about  Time  Machine for help with TM problems.  Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM.  See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
There are two important errors noted in the backup:
    I-O error -36 « fuzzybrain|daisychain|blogdrain
The following comes from the LaCie web site but is applicable to any other external drives whether home brew or commercial.
Getting error -50 when copying data in OS X.
Some LaCie drives ship out formatted FAT32 so they will be ready to use on either a Mac or a PC. If you are getting error -50 when copying to a LaCie drive, or any drive formatted for PC, it is because of the following:
Certain characters that can be used in a Mac OS X filename are not allowed in MS-DOS filenames. This can prevent the file from being copied, and can occur when a filename contains non-printing ASCII characters, or any of these characters: ? / \ < > " | > *.
Either copy the data off of the drive and use Apple's Disk Utility to erase the drive in Mac OS Extended format, or change the filenames of the documents that cannot be copied.

  • Time Machine Restore After New Logic Board

Older iMac (2009) had hard drive and logic board replaced.  Running latest system (10.10.2) before and after logic board replacement.
When attempting to restore from a Time Machine backup made prior to the new logic board, although the iMac sees the Time Capsule and the "Data" file, attempts to proceed with the restore are met with error message "There was a problem connecting to the server [name of Time Capsule] - contact your administrator."
Any experience with this issue?  Anybody successfully perform a restore following a new logic board?
    Thanks very much.

I would refer you to visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with Time Machine and full system restore. It also provides instruction on how to restore a backup from another system or Time Machine backup drive.

  • TS1550 Time Machine issue with Mountain Lion.  Can you help?

I have an Iomega Mac Companion used as an external backup drive for my Imac running Mountain Lion. After launching Time Machine, I got an error message that said the backup couldn't' be completed because an error occurred while creating the backup folder.  I rebooted and everything was fine for 24 hours.  Since then, I get the same error message even after another reboot.  In Time Machine preferences it says "oldest backup none" and "latest backup none."
    Any suggestions?
    GR

Finally have it solved!!  Sort of...  I spoke with Mac support on two occasions and they were extremely helpful.  Thought the issue was with the firewire 800 connection.  Switched to a USB connection and everything worked great...for about 24 hours.  Then had the same error messages.  Chatted with Iomega tech support and they finally admitted that there are known issues with Mountain Lion, there is no work around and they have no intention of making it compatible with 10.8.
I'm returning the drive today.  Thanks for your help and suggestions.  Suggestions for a decent back up hard drive that will work with Mountain Lion?

  • Help with Restoring from Time Machine Backup with new Hard Drive

Hello. Recently, my hard drive died in my 24" Early 2008 Aluminum iMac. Luckily, I had a time machine backup, and I took it upon myself to replace the 320 GB Hard Drive with a 2 TB Seagate Barracuda disk. The hardware replacement (although difficult) went fine. Now, I'm having a bit of trouble restoring the new drive from my time machine backup. The new disk shows up in Disk Utility with the correct capacity. I formatted the new drive with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using my installation disk. My only problem is that the drive isn't showing up when I am choosing which drive I want to restore my time machine backup onto. I can pick out the backup I want perfectly fine, but I can't find the new drive. Any help?

UPDATE: I restarted it (Classic IT Crowd "Have you tried turning it off and on" moment) and the drive shows up on screen. Right now, I'm waiting for it to "Calculate disk size needed for restore" and I'll keep you posted.
UPDATE 2: Currently restoring. Let's see if it's successful.

  • Time Machine Issue with Western Digital Hard Drive

I'm running snow leopard with a 300 GB WD External HD using TIme Machine. About every 4 months or so Time Machine gives me an error and says to repair the disk to fix the problem. I go to Disc Utility and try to repair it but it says "Disc cannot be mounted" I try reformatting the drive but it gives me the same error. I have even taken it over to a PC and tried reformatting it there but same issue. Is the HD dead? Time to move on?

I am having similar issues with Wd drive. I found out is the housing of drive but not drive. How is the external drive connected to your mac? I found out after I bought my My Book and My Book Studio is at fault. Many people in discussion have reported failures. If you are using either one, get another drive. But do not buy another WD My Book or WD My Book Studio. Try an different brand. Like G-Drive is good brand for time machine.
Lastly and oddly, I do own WD passport hd and it works like charm, no problems with it.

  • Time Machine Fails with New Internal HDD

After vertical lines began proliferating on the screen of my iMac (intel core duo, late 2006 running Leopard 10.5.8), my Apple tech swapped it for a "similar" iMac, running the same OS, and dumped the contents of the original HDD onto the much larger new one. However, instead of an intel, the swap got me one of the original iMac G5 PPCs made in early 2006. After several days of having to reinstall software and other awful adjustments, the biggest problem is accessing Time Machine and having it continue with the new set-up (I gave the new HDD the same name as the old one).
I can enter Time Machine but it remains static and I can not access any previous backups the usual way... I can click open the external drive (LaCie 1TB, Mac OS Extended, case-sensitive, journaled) and copy files if need be. It is filled only at 1/4 capacity.
While doing that, I noticed in the backup list a last document "2011-11-01-024657.inProgress" at 3:47am followed by an alias folder "Latest" with the time stamp of 1:47am. I take it that 3:47am backup was interrupted when the iMac was shut down.
I turned on Time Machine yesterday to get backups restarted but the first backup "failed." Now that the computer is different, will I have to reformat the LaCie to engage TM once more? Partition for two backup sets? For any of these options, I'd appreciate a step-by-step.
    Thank you too much!

By default, Time Machine only shows the backups for the Mac it's running on.  To see the backups for a different one, you need the Browse... option, per #E2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
I can click open the external drive (LaCie 1TB, Mac OS Extended, case-sensitive, journaled)
That's not a problem, and is the default when you let Time Machine format a backup drive.

    Correct.
I turned on Time Machine yesterday to get backups restarted but the first backup "failed."
That could be any of a number of things.  See #C2 in the Troubleshooting article.  It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.    If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages.
Now that the computer is different, will I have to reformat the LaCie to engage TM once more?
Depending on the space available, maybe, and it may be wise anyway.  Time Machine will start a new set of backups for the new Mac, so will need lots of room.  Worse, when the backup disk gets full, it will not delete the oldest backups from the old Mac to make room -- it will delete the oldest backups from the new one, instead.  (That's been fixed in Snow Leopard and Lion, but not Leopard.)

  • Reconnect to time machine backup with new disk

I have a macbook air who's SSD crashed.  Shop reformatted it (I think) and got everything back up.  I then came home to try and restore my data from a Time Capsule over Time Machine.  Had to do a hard reset (lost password) but time capsule works fine now on my other machine.  However using the Migration Utility, it accepts the password to restore from Time Capsule, then just returns me to the same screen each time after I press continue.  Result is I don't have access to my backups!  Help please.

You could use the TM backup as the source of importing your personal account data. You would be given that as an option in the Setup Assistant which runs the first time you powerup a new Mac.

  • Time Machine issue with multiple drives...

So I am trying to run two backups, one wirelessly and the other through a wired USB connection. This is for a MacBook Air, so it's not always connected to the USB drive. The instructions I found online said that once you click "Select Disk" and to to add another disk, it will ask you if you want to switch disks or use both. That option for "both" never came up, and it was like I was selecting a new Time Machine disk. Why is that? Can't I use both disks as automatic back-ups? I am thinking of adding a third, and didn't want to continue unless I was sure. I have OS 10.7.5

The option to use multiple backup disks is only in OS X 10.8 and later.

  • Selective Time Machine Restore with new drive?

I have a late 2011 MBP. Running an OCZ Octane drive which is not compatible with ML. Want to upgrade to ML from Lion.
I have a TM setup with a backup of the internal 128 GB drive, of which I'm using about 40 GB of, and my external 750 GB drive, on to a 2TB TM disk.
If I do a final back, shut down, swap the drive for a new SSD, and boot to restore from TM, will it balk since the TM backup is in fact much larger than the 128 GB SSD that I just put in? TM would be around 600GB total. OR, can I just have it perform the backup of the original 128 GB drive, and not bother with the external 750 GB drive?

I'm in the same situation as the original poster, the leopard DVD is at work, and on a Saturday my laptop crashed. I get this "Unable to load XIPanel_RestoreIntroduction nib file" error and I'd like to know if others have been able to:
    1) understand what this message is about, e.g. are there additional checks in the nib file or is it just not found?
    2) work around the issue one way or another.
Apple making computers -- deterministic creatures of all, and not casinos I'm not fully satisfied with the idea that this is a gamble to work around the issue. Unless of course there is a list of "other issues" that's been published somewhere in which case I'll be grateful to not embark on a useless and ultimately doomed effort to get my mac to work.

  • Restoring my System with Time Machine to a new HD without the Snow Leopard DVD

    Hi there,
I changed my HD in my MacBook Pro to a bigger one and then wanted to Restore the System via Time Machine onto that new HD. Sadly I dont have the Snow Leopard DVD that was coming with the MacBook. Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:
When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". But iwill not boot from the DVD.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
    Kind Regards

You can't use a machine specific OS X install disk with another model of Mac.
It has to do with hardware drivers being on one disk and not applicable to another machine, why you get the kernel panic.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
No. You need the OS X install disk.
Choices depending on what your machine is:
1: If your machine with the missing OS X install disk originally came with 10.6.3 or later, call Apple for machine specific replacement disks, there will be a fee of course. That's the only ones that will work.
2: If your machine originally came with 10.6.2 or earlier, you can choose to buy the 10.6.3 retail disk from Apple online, however it contains no free iLife. It comes faster.
3: If your machine originally came with 10.0 - 10.6.2, and you want the free iLife, then order the machine specific versions from Apple, however it might take longer.
4: If your machine originally came with 10.5, and your now on 10.6.x via the 10.6.3 retail disk, you can extract the free iLife from the 10.5 disks using Pacifist from CharlesSoft if you don't want to buy iLife.
You will need this disk regardless in case you need to #18 Reinstall Just OS X or #20 Erase and Install OS X or perform #4-#6 repair proceedures:
Step by Step to fix your Mac
    Is there another possibility...
Yes, once you have gotten a new OS X install disk, consider making bootable clones.
It's software that can clone your entire OS X drive/partition (no Bootcamp or Filevaulted) to another external drive and you can easily hold the option key to boot from it.

  • Issue trying to use old Mac Time Machine backup on new Mac

I've just got a new iMac 27" to replace my old 21" and am planning to restore files from the Time Machine backup I have. On the iMac 21" I used an external hard-drive connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station to back up using Time Machine. On the new Mac the external drive is connected directly to the USB port. The old machine is now about 10,000 miles away from me.
The issue I have is I cannot read the back-up from the old machine on the new.
During the first startup I tried to read from the Time Machine backup but the system told me I could not use it because it was from a different machine - it read all the back-up dates and let me chose, but did not allow to use it.
After startup was completed, I run a software update to make sure everything had the same version and tried Migration Assistant (with the HD still connected to the USB port), but the wheel keeps spinning not finding any disk.
I can read the .sparsebundle file on the external drive and I see it is intact. Disk Utility recognizes it and Status is Not mounted. When I try to open it with Disk Utility it says it is not mountable.
Any of you know how I can resolve this? I am thinking of a way of opening the file and reading it.
I really just need my music, my movies and my pictures, but I have 1.2T of that so it is not something I can download from the old Mac.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

  • Time Machine backup with Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) system disc

When I purchased my MacBook in December 2006, it came with the Tiger OS. I have since updated with OS 10.5.. and have been successfully backing up my computer with Time Machine. I have run out of hard disc space on my laptop and have purchased a new hard drive. After several relocations including out of the country, I have only been able to find my original Mac 10.4 start up disc which is not compatable with Time Machine. Any ideas on how to restore my system from Time Machine to my new hard drive?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
You must buy (or borrow) a Leopard Install disc.
Since you only use the Installer on it (you don't load OSX from it), it doesn't matter what version of Leopard it is, and doesn't violate the license.
Your other, safer option is to use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make a "bootable clone" of your internal HD, boot up from it, replace the drive, and re-clone back to the new HD.
For that you'll need a separate partition on your external HD, or a new or borrowed one. CCC is donationware, so you can use it free for a while. If you decide to keep it, send them some $$ so they can keep it up to date. SD has a free version, but to do updates in the future (rather than a full replacement) or automatic scheduling, you need the paid version (about $30). Either is available via Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.
Note that you will need the Leopard disc sooner or later anyway; AppleCare will send you a replacement for a nominal fee.

I'd recommend staring over, Pondini has created an excellent guide on how to use Setup Assistant. I'd recommend begin reading Pondini Setup Assistant tips where he talks about "Second Chance." Assuming your Time Machine backup is sound the restore  should be very smooth.
