Time Machine issue

Hello -
I have a Time Capsule (ethernet) and an external drive (firewire) connected to the new Time Machine multiple backup rotation list. I have now added another external drive (firewire, daisy-chained to the other external), but can not add it to the backup rotation. The new one shows up as an available disk, but when I select it and choose "use disk", I don't get the next option window - it just goes back to the TM preferences and the drive is not added.
Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks,
Randy

They often do.

Time Machine issues (16030) sparsebundle” is already in use for Time Capsule backup process.  Just started happeing been using it for over two years.

First, restart the computer and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this solve the problem.

  • Time Machine issues with OS 10.6.8

    Hi all,
after updating to 10.6.8 I noticed a Time Machine issue.
Backup takes very long but only a few MB were backed up.
And after it was finished, Finder crashed and I had to do a hard reset.
There´s also a "in progress" file on my USB Backup HDD after finishing.
Checking my HDD´s and repairing it wasn´t the problem.
Today I tried a new USB HDD to make a fresh Backup via Time Machine.
After a few hours it was finished, but only 7,8MB were backed up and still there is an "in progress" file on my new Backup HDD.
    Here´s a troubleshoot:

    Can anyone help me?

A  whole  lot  about  Time  Machine for help with TM problems.  Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM.  See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
There are two important errors noted in the backup:
    I-O error -36 « fuzzybrain|daisychain|blogdrain
The following comes from the LaCie web site but is applicable to any other external drives whether home brew or commercial.
Getting error -50 when copying data in OS X.
Some LaCie drives ship out formatted FAT32 so they will be ready to use on either a Mac or a PC. If you are getting error -50 when copying to a LaCie drive, or any drive formatted for PC, it is because of the following:
Certain characters that can be used in a Mac OS X filename are not allowed in MS-DOS filenames. This can prevent the file from being copied, and can occur when a filename contains non-printing ASCII characters, or any of these characters: ? / \ < > " | > *.
Either copy the data off of the drive and use Apple's Disk Utility to erase the drive in Mac OS Extended format, or change the filenames of the documents that cannot be copied.

  • Time machine issue after Yosemite install

After performing a clean install of Yosemite and migration from my TimeMachine backup I experienced the following:
I opened iTunes and selected some music to play, then got a dialog box saying the files could not be found.  Spotlight couldn't find them either... they were just gone.  Naturally I went to my Time Machine backups and was surprised the music was gone from the backups, all the way back to the first backup.  Very wierd.  During the migration I went through the "Cleaning up old backups" process, not sure exactly what this process is.
I was pretty bummed that I had permanently lost a lot of music, some was recordings of friends playing live that could never be replaced.  I then remembered that some time ago, just for the **** of it, I copied my sparsebundle backups to an external drive and stashed it in a drawer.  I browsed it, and lo and behold there were the missing files.  So I narrowly escaped a big problem, but wy did this happen?  What are they doing over at Apple?

This is really bad luck. And what can be seen here, it is not related to Yosemite but Mavericks, since I asume your backups were made with Mavericks. Though, it is possible that this bug still persists with Yosemite.
I have a similar problem. I am still on Mavericks. I see missing files in ~/Library/Preferences on a regular basis. When I come aware of it, I fix it manually by excluding Preferences folder from backup, run backup, include folder Preferences and finally backup again. But this fix does not last for long. Suddenly after some weeks I see a again missing files in that folder, when browsing the "Latest" backup.
I have found some related discussion:
    Time machine missing files

    missing mail after installation
No solution until today. Very frustrating.
My feeling is, that many users do not recognize, that they are victim of this horrible bug, cause in most cases only few folders are hit by this bug.
And now since Yosemite is out, people are actually using there backups for the first time since Mavericks and run into a disaster.
Atm I am trying to test, if maybe fsevent daemon is the problem, in the past there have been issues like http://openradar.appspot.com/10207999
I did a check on my drive, and I found issues with realpath()/readdir(). Though, those issues may just be old and have not been detected by me for a very long time. My MBP is 5 years old and I upgraded all the way from 10.5 to 10.6 to 10.9.
With 10.6 I never had such an issue.
But more likely, the issue is related to the "Cleaning up old backups" process. Cause I also have the feeling, that when my backup drive gets full and  the shrink process took place, then the result are missing files in younger backups then the ones cleaned. If that is true, then maybe the hard-link-approach of Time Machine is somehow involved.

  • Time machine issue, trying to recover a file

    OK,
Haven't needed to use time machine but now is the case and am having trouble ;-( !
My computer is backing upto the external drive with no issues.( Just did it a minute ago)
I can see the backups correctly dated on the external drive.
    BUT....
When I "enter" time machine I cannot go back in time!
It shows me "today" and the arrow doesn't want to go back in time.
Also no timeline dates on the right side.
How can I "fix" this? I'm sure the data is on the drive but how can I get timemachine to find it again?
    Thanks,
    Phillyman

OK.. Solved the problem but sadly can't say what it was! Last night my computer completely froze while I was transferring files to another external hd. I could only shut the iMac off with pressing and holding the power button on the back. After starting up, during the white screen with apple logo it ran something with a progress bar (fsck?) .After the startup the timemachine program scanned all files and then worked without a hitch... Maybe the restart did the trick? No clue.
But at least it now works

  • Time machine issues after installing lion server

I have a macbook pro and an imac in my home network, both running lion 10.7.3.
For some time, I used time machine to back up the macbook over ethernet to an external usb drive attached to the imac, which worked fine.
A couple of days ago, I installed the server.app on the imac, but disabled all services after a couple of days.
But now, all of a sudden, I can't complete my time machine backups anymore, I get this error message:
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."
I am not sure what to do here,
    thanks for your comments,
    geb

I am having a similar issue, but in my situation, my users cannot log in.  All of my users are network users on Mini's.  I am running 10.6.8 on my server.  I have created users before with no issues, but have not done so in months.  When I try to log the new user in, I get the following error:
xpchelper: Could not get path of user account (uid:1029) home directory:/Network/Servers/server.xxx.net/Volumes/Data/Users/username; error; The operation couldn't be completed. No such file or directory. Using home directory.
CFPreferences: user home directory at file://localhost/Network/Servers/server.xxx.net/Volumes/Data/Users/username/ is currently unavailable. User domains will be volatile.
    Authorizationhost: error |-[homedirmounter mount NetworkHomeWithURL: attributes: dirPath: username:]|PremountHomeDirectoryWithAuthentication (url=AFP://server.xxx.net/Users/homedir= /Network/Servers/server.xxx.net/Volumes/Data/Users/username, name=username) returned 5.
I have no idea of what to do.  I have verified that the user looks the same as my other users in WGM. The user's folder was created on the server.  The user has access to the folder.  I'm not sure what else could be wrong here.

  • Time Machine issues, restoring from iPhoto '09

I have a mid 2010 15" MBP which has been a trusty steed up until October 2014, where the logic board failed. I did the depot repair, and I mistakenly reset my Time Machine as well since I somehow forgot the password and started, I think, a new network and data.
I just started to look at ways to restore my old files that I had backed up with my Time Machine pre-October 2014. I browsed and browsed websites and forums, but no matter what, I was stuck with the new backup starting from October 2014.
Last night, I used Migration Assistant (I know, why didn't I use that first?) and success, I was able to access my files I had backed up to Time Machine before my logic board failed. But here's the issue. Somehow, my photos cannot be found. I did update the iPhoto to the newest version, but I cannot find the old iPhoto library pre-October 2014. I even went into Time Machine, but for some reason, it goes back to the post-October 2014 backup, even though I migrated everything from the pre-October 2014 backup. I know it sounds confusing, but I should have everything from the pre-October 2014 backup if I did Migration Assistant and every files seems accounted for.
I guess if anyone could help me find the iPhoto library, that'll be great. Under Pictures, there is an iPhoto library icon, but it is grayed out. Hope this is helpful. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

If this helps, if I manually type in the file name of the images in Finder, I can only access the thumbnails. Is this a good thing?

  • Third external drive that won't show up!  OS or time machine  issues?

    Hi,
    This is driving me crazy...
This is my third seagate drive manifesting similar issues which leads me to believe maybe there is an issue not with the drive, but with my operating system (maybe Time Machine)??
My original extenral drive (set up to be backed up using time machine) one day would no longer show up in finder.  (My macbook pro still under warranty; I went to Apple genuises.  Drive at first took a while to power up, then next try didn't.   It wouldn't "mount," they showed me in Disk Utility.  They said problem was the drive.  I returned drive and got a "new" refurbished replacement as I was still under seagate warranty also.
Then same thing with next one, showed up at first to do back-ups then intermittently--and then, it, too wouldn't even power up.  Returned that one.
NOW I HAVE A REFURBISHED REPLACEMENT THAT DID ONE SUCCESSFUL BACKUP AND TODAY, PLUGGED IN AS USUAL, WILL NEITHER POWER UP NOR SHOW UP IN FINDER.  (I have tried numerous outlets, btw).
I won't go into the whole story, but in case it's relevant: I have had major issues for over a year with Time Machine (since updating to Mountain Lion and changing my internal HD). Time Machine can't find my time capsule disk.  There were other system failure problems with my computer which after my HD was wiped out TWICE have not recurred; nor were they ever clearly diagnosed.
Could the above string of issues be a software problem with Time Machine (or my operating system) causing all the rest of the issues???
I was about to box up the second Seagate and return it!  Now the identical problem showing itself with the new one!!!  What to do??  (Because TC not being found and this disk not showing, I have no backups I can rely on at the moment...  Makes me very nervous.  (I am going to look into clones etc. but want option for successful TM backup as well.
    Thanks!

just want to add, that these are Seagate drives for MAC:  Free Agent GoFlex 2 TB.
I have disconnected.  Rebooted computer, reconnected.  To no avail.
Have checked with firewire and power cords from second and new drive in varying combinations.  No powering up.  no showing up in Finder.  (I did install the software that came with the new drive.
Also, when I just tried to back up via TM it looked for the seagate that I have just erased with a 3-pass security, preparing it to return to Seagate.  I wanted to delete it from list of back up disks in TM and it does not give me option to do that.
So now, I have two big check marks, one next to Time Capsule and one next to the second seagate in TM preferences telling me that disks are not available.  (Btw--after not finding Time Capsule for months, one day, TM was able to findTC and did a back up two weeks ago, then couldn't find it anymore after that.
Just wanted to give full picture.

  • Time Machine Issue with new system board.

OK MAC Fans here is an issue that I discovered with Time Machine (TM).
First I have a 17” MacBookPro that has two 1TB external HDs and a 30” monitor attached to it.
Something happened to my system and the system board had to be replaced.
The Mac was sent to TX and a new system board was put in it and the very latest OS (10.5.2) was installed on the hard drive.
The Apple store added my profile so you think everything would be good?
    Wrong!
None of my applications made it through.
But I was thinking let just use Time Machine to restore them. WRONG in a way.
The first thing I did when I got home was set up TM. I pointed TM to the external HD that has all of the previous backup files and TM wanted to backup the system. During the backup I notice that TM created a new directory for the backup files.
The name of the directory was the name of my MAC. The old directory was also the name of my MAC but with the new OS software release it was stated that you could not use any special characters when naming your MAC or TM may not recognize your backup files (there is a note on this under support).
The new name is FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 the old name was Firstname Lastname’s MacBookPro 17”. TM created a new directory named FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 and this was the only files that are visible in TM.
I deleted the new directory and renamed my MAC back to the old name and TM created a NEW directory with the old name. Now there were 2 directories with the same “old” name. I can not get TM to use the old directory and display the old backup files.
I was able to drag and drop the files and applications I needed from the previous backup folders back to where I needed them to be so all is not lost but I can not restore files from TM.
Also I renamed my MAC back to FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 and TM automatically changed the name of the new directory to the new name.
I tried to drag old backup folders from the old TM directory to the new TM directory but received an error that the files can not be modified.
The only thing that I can think is that when the system board was replaced TM got confused and did not recognize it as the same system. So now I am starting my backup history all over again. The old backup files are good, the only thing is that I have to drag and drop items I want from those folders to the location I want. I can not use the old backup files in TM.
Dose any one have a magic pill (red or blue) I can take to make the old files visible in TM?

I decided not to worry about the syncing my TM. I was just at the Apple store and they have decided to replace my MacBookPro. I am going to start my backups on the new system all over again. I know I can drag and drop files that I want from the old files to the new system if I want and that will be go enough.

  • TS1550 Time Machine issue with Mountain Lion.  Can you help?

I have an Iomega Mac Companion used as an external backup drive for my Imac running Mountain Lion. After launching Time Machine, I got an error message that said the backup couldn't' be completed because an error occurred while creating the backup folder.  I rebooted and everything was fine for 24 hours.  Since then, I get the same error message even after another reboot.  In Time Machine preferences it says "oldest backup none" and "latest backup none."
    Any suggestions?
    GR

Finally have it solved!!  Sort of...  I spoke with Mac support on two occasions and they were extremely helpful.  Thought the issue was with the firewire 800 connection.  Switched to a USB connection and everything worked great...for about 24 hours.  Then had the same error messages.  Chatted with Iomega tech support and they finally admitted that there are known issues with Mountain Lion, there is no work around and they have no intention of making it compatible with 10.8.
I'm returning the drive today.  Thanks for your help and suggestions.  Suggestions for a decent back up hard drive that will work with Mountain Lion?

  • Time MAchine issue or had WD HDD died?

For the last two years I have had My Book Premium 500gb External HDD partitioned (using Disk Utility) into two equal volumes that I have named MyBook 1 and 2 respectively. I use My Book 1 for for my Time Machine backup drive and My Book 2 for odds and ends and my iTunes library. My Book 2 get
Recently my iMac has been slow booting up. I checked all my volumes (including my iMacs internal HDD) over for errors and found a number of serious errors in Mybook 1. I was prepared to reformat this volume and start over with the Time Machine backups because this volume had corrupted before about a year ago. Anyway Disk Warrior got my MyBook working again for about a week. However I recall that it mentioned DW reporting that it had made 'Volume Wrapper repairs where necessary" or something similar.
Anyway the other day both volumes disappeared from my desktop. I fired up Disc Utility, then Disk Warrior but neither programme could see the MyBook Drive. Then my iMac refused to boot up. I got the 'white screen of death'. The MyBook began making a faint clicking noise about once every second or so. The only way to get my iMac to boot up was to disconnect my MyBook Premium HDD from the Firewire connection. I couldn't even boot from my Disk Warrior DVD unless the MyBook disconnected.
So I am thinking my My Book has died. and wondering whether there any way to recover it even though my iMac won't start up with it connected?
Anyway, next day I got the external HDD working again.
The iMac was off but I noticed that the MyBook was still spinning after several hours so I pulled the power cable out of the drive. The spinning stopped but for some reason the round blue display on the front remained lit up. In fact it only went out when I removed the Firewire cable from the MyBook leaving the iMac end in situ . The MyBook was quite warm but not hot.
I decided to leave it alone overnight and went away. Came home from work this evening. Pondering about the problem I turn off Time Machine in the System Preferences pane and wrote the above account.
An hour later I plugged the MyBook back in with the iMac running. Nothing happened but I didn't expect it too. So, on a hunch, I restarted my iMac. Lo, it fired up immediately. Not very very slowly or stuck at the grey screen. Both volumes appear on the desktop. The only difference is both have the yellow and white Firewire icon, presumably because I have turned off Time Machine.
So my hunch is that Time Machine has an issue - not necessarily with Snow Leopard.

I got it working again by removing and then replacing the cable firstly at the HDD end, without success and then at the Mac end. This time all booted up and both volumes appeared on the desk top.
The Hdd then spent over an hour transferring about 140 gigs (MyBook2) to my internal Hdd. No problems that I could discern. The external HDD spun down but a short while later it was spun up continuosly again. By way of an experiment I went to the Desktop and ejected both volumes. The external HDD spun down.
Now however I'm back to nothing on the desktop and a continuously spun-up External HDD.
I'm looking through the WD Support pages now with a view of interrogating them about this. Hopefully it is only a matter of updating the firmware as was mentioned earlier I think.
    Thanks

  • Cant install snow leopard - time machine issue

I can't get past the initial install test, because once long ago, I accidentally clicked time machine onto the HD, and even though it isn't in the list of time machine disks anymore, the install goes no further than disk selection.

Try holding the OPTION key when you boot up and selecting the Mac HD volume from the select screeen when it comes up. You may want to try it with TM turned off.
I still strongly suggest that you have an external drive for a back up before trying anything, if there is any king issue your data is at risk. It not question if your drive will fail, the question is when.
Also more on TM can be found here.

  • Time Machine Issue with Western Digital Hard Drive

I'm running snow leopard with a 300 GB WD External HD using TIme Machine. About every 4 months or so Time Machine gives me an error and says to repair the disk to fix the problem. I go to Disc Utility and try to repair it but it says "Disc cannot be mounted" I try reformatting the drive but it gives me the same error. I have even taken it over to a PC and tried reformatting it there but same issue. Is the HD dead? Time to move on?

I am having similar issues with Wd drive. I found out is the housing of drive but not drive. How is the external drive connected to your mac? I found out after I bought my My Book and My Book Studio is at fault. Many people in discussion have reported failures. If you are using either one, get another drive. But do not buy another WD My Book or WD My Book Studio. Try an different brand. Like G-Drive is good brand for time machine.
Lastly and oddly, I do own WD passport hd and it works like charm, no problems with it.

  • Time Machine issue since 10.5.1 upgrade

Ok, so a lot have people i've read have been having issues with Time Machine since day 1, however it's always worked fine for me.
Today, I upgraded to 10.5.1 via software update and now i've received an error message from Time Machine which states that my TM hard drive is read only. I check this by using get info and for me as the current user (with Admin rights) it's saying read/write.
    Any ideas?

    Quick update.
So Ejected and then mounted my hard drive again, went into System Preferences>Time Machine turned off Time Machine and then chose the change disk option. I selected the same disk that had problems previously and then waited for the next scheduled backup to take place. I've just checked and the backup has now taken place without any issues or errors.
My drive is an iomega model by the way, the one that looks similar to the PowerMac casing and is 640GB in size. Partitioned in to 3 with one being allocated to TM.
I'll repost if I encounter any problems again but would suggest others try what I did to rectify the problem. It won't solve all problems but may help out others experiencing the same symptom as me.
