Time machine issues after installing lion server

I have a macbook pro and an imac in my home network, both running lion 10.7.3.
For some time, I used time machine to back up the macbook over ethernet to an external usb drive attached to the imac, which worked fine.
A couple of days ago, I installed the server.app on the imac, but disabled all services after a couple of days.
But now, all of a sudden, I can't complete my time machine backups anymore, I get this error message:
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."
I am not sure what to do here,
thanks for your comments,
geb

I am having a similar issue, but in my situation, my users cannot log in.  All of my users are network users on Mini's.  I am running 10.6.8 on my server.  I have created users before with no issues, but have not done so in months.  When I try to log the new user in, I get the following error:
xpchelper: Could not get path of user account (uid:1029) home directory:/Network/Servers/server.xxx.net/Volumes/Data/Users/username; error; The operation couldn't be completed. No such file or directory. Using home directory.
CFPreferences: user home directory at file://localhost/Network/Servers/server.xxx.net/Volumes/Data/Users/username/ is currently unavailable. User domains will be volatile.
Authorizationhost: error |-[homedirmounter mount NetworkHomeWithURL: attributes: dirPath: username:]|PremountHomeDirectoryWithAuthentication (url=AFP://server.xxx.net/Users/homedir= /Network/Servers/server.xxx.net/Volumes/Data/Users/username, name=username) returned 5.
I have no idea of what to do.  I have verified that the user looks the same as my other users in WGM. The user's folder was created on the server.  The user has access to the folder.  I'm not sure what else could be wrong here.

  • Serious log in issues after installing Lion Server

    Hi all,
I am relatively inexperienced with software involving essentially anything technical, so you will have to pardon my ignorance.
I am currently trying to set-up a wireless network at home using Lion Server, and it would appear I have bitten off more than I can chew. I installed Lion Server on Tuesday, and have been battling with it ever since - attempting to use a 'We Got Served' guide to walk me through.
I installed the Server app on my iMac as I figured the 3 computers on the network would not require very much space, and so there would be little point in buying a whole new machine to run it from. Whilst I was having little luck in making it work as I had hoped - I have now managed to completely lock the iMac. Since it's installation I have had no issue logging in and out of my actual account on OSX, however earlier the computer froze following an Adobe update and I was forced to do a hard restart. However, when I attempted to log back in I now get the following error:
"You are unable to log in to the user account "xxxx" at this time.
Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
I have tried everything in my limited knowledge to rectify this, and nothing works it would seem. I've read examples of this happening when trying to log into the actual server app, or where the hard drive is corrupt on the machine itself - this seems to be a hybrid of the two.
I can no longer open the computer in Safe Mode, however when I go into Disk Utility all disks when verified appear to be absolutely fine with disc repair making no difference. The only available drive is now listed as a Server drive so I cannot even re-install Lion on there.
This is causing me much distress as I can as far as I can tell not only log into my computer, but can do nothing to repair the issue bar erasing everthing from it. There is a lot of important data on there and I am confident that it is not actually corrupt, however Server seems to have just locked it completely.
    Help would be much appreciated!

  • Time machine issue after Yosemite install

After performing a clean install of Yosemite and migration from my TimeMachine backup I experienced the following:
I opened iTunes and selected some music to play, then got a dialog box saying the files could not be found.  Spotlight couldn't find them either... they were just gone.  Naturally I went to my Time Machine backups and was surprised the music was gone from the backups, all the way back to the first backup.  Very wierd.  During the migration I went through the "Cleaning up old backups" process, not sure exactly what this process is.
I was pretty bummed that I had permanently lost a lot of music, some was recordings of friends playing live that could never be replaced.  I then remembered that some time ago, just for the **** of it, I copied my sparsebundle backups to an external drive and stashed it in a drawer.  I browsed it, and lo and behold there were the missing files.  So I narrowly escaped a big problem, but wy did this happen?  What are they doing over at Apple?

This is really bad luck. And what can be seen here, it is not related to Yosemite but Mavericks, since I asume your backups were made with Mavericks. Though, it is possible that this bug still persists with Yosemite.
I have a similar problem. I am still on Mavericks. I see missing files in ~/Library/Preferences on a regular basis. When I come aware of it, I fix it manually by excluding Preferences folder from backup, run backup, include folder Preferences and finally backup again. But this fix does not last for long. Suddenly after some weeks I see a again missing files in that folder, when browsing the "Latest" backup.
I have found some related discussion:

No solution until today. Very frustrating.
My feeling is, that many users do not recognize, that they are victim of this horrible bug, cause in most cases only few folders are hit by this bug.
And now since Yosemite is out, people are actually using there backups for the first time since Mavericks and run into a disaster.
Atm I am trying to test, if maybe fsevent daemon is the problem, in the past there have been issues like http://openradar.appspot.com/10207999
I did a check on my drive, and I found issues with realpath()/readdir(). Though, those issues may just be old and have not been detected by me for a very long time. My MBP is 5 years old and I upgraded all the way from 10.5 to 10.6 to 10.9.
With 10.6 I never had such an issue.
But more likely, the issue is related to the "Cleaning up old backups" process. Cause I also have the feeling, that when my backup drive gets full and  the shrink process took place, then the result are missing files in younger backups then the ones cleaned. If that is true, then maybe the hard-link-approach of Time Machine is somehow involved.

  • I am having start up issues after installing lion

after installing lion on my mac mini it is having major start up issues, sometimes it will not start up at all. Is anyone having the same issues?

After I used MIgration Assistant on my new Mac Mini, Lion would have kernel panics shortly after startup every time. I am pretty sure it was some virus software or network filterting software that ran background tasks that was causing the problem.
Can you startup in single user mode or safe mode?

  • Time capsule problems after installing Lion

After installing Lion, I need to regularly shut down iMac(Intel) in order to have Time capsule do the next backup. This method allows me to manually back up the automatic function to back up no longer exists. Also unable to connect to the backup disk.

Mine needs backing up immediately after its just backed up!! Its crazy!! IOS5 was supposed to be free but as a result I had to pay to upgrade to Lion then I had to pay to upgrade to iPhoto 11 just to be able to transfer photos from my iphone!! On top of this, Lion runs as slow as a PC, asks to backup constantly, I'm losing iDisk and iWeb next year and they've removed the bounce facility from Mail. Blinding. Well done Apple - who's brainwave was Lion and IOS5? Bill Gates?

  • Time Machine Lost After Installing Windows

Last night I installed Windows XP using Boot Camp. Everything went great and Windows ran perfectly....well it is Windows so it ran okay. Now I noticed that I have an icon for the Mac HD like always and a new icon for the Windows partion (Untitled). Now the Time Machine drive icon is missing. When I open Time Machine it will not let me select the back up drive that I use.
Also, how do I rename the new Windows drive. It shows up as "Untitled".
    Thanks,
    Joe

    I found this also.
One other thing I have noticed with Virusbarrier X5 which might be useful - if you enable archive scanning, the entire Finder interface will lock for about 30 seconds when you try and mount and image to instal an application.
I've mailed their support people already about the Time Machine issue and tonight mailed them about the 'archive scanning' issue.

  • Can't restore Time Machine backup after iMAC (Lion) Refresh

I recently did a refresh of my iMAC with OSX Lion. I have been using time capsule to back up my iMAC as well as my Mac Mini for the last 6 months with what I perceived to be no issues.
When I got to the part in the MAC start up to restore from backup it couldn't seem to find the iMAC backup, only the Mac Mini backup so I skipped that part. I then tried to use Migration Assistant later and the same thing, I couldn't find it. I used finder to locate the Time Capsule and was able to find the backup, but when I double clicked on it said "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Time Machine Backups". you can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to the files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can".
Even though it said that it open a new finder window and I was able to find the backups and I proceed to copy of the files over. All seemed well until I opened iPhoto and it wouldn't open (just hung). I did a library restore/repair by clicking Option + Command when opening and after it ran iPhoto opened. When I browsed around though some recent pics that I uploaded either weren't there or corrupted and all my faces were gone.
I did a fresh install again and tried all over and the same thing happened. Any help on getting back my old backup? Seems to be corrupted or something, but I'm not sure.
See previous post before this... I was told to post my problem here - as I originally posted on the iPhoto forum before I realized I had a time machine / capsule problem.

    Hi there,
I had a look through and I tried to do option A5 - which is repair or verify disk. I dragged the sparebundle for the mackup to disk utility and after trying to do a repair I got the message "disk utility stopped repairing "Time Machine backups".
Does this mean that my backup is corrupted and useless for a restore with time machine?
    Yes.
And that also means copying via the Finder may not get everything.  Corrupted is corrupted.
Assuming you copied from the most recent backup, you might want to try copying just the iPhoto Library from an earlier one -- that might not be damaged.  If you have room, put it somewhere else, like your desktop.  Or if you have an external HD, that would work.

  • Firewire issue after installing Lion

I use a Western Digital Studio II as my Time Machine back-up drive on my Macbook Pro. I've always had this device connected via the Firewire 400 port and it has worked flawlessly for the 2 years or so that I've had it.
Just upgraded to Lion. Now, the WD drive doesn't mount. No sign of it.
I know the drive's OK because if I connect via USB, all is well (but of course, it's slow).
I've checked WD's support site in case there's a driver update but there's nothing newer than what I already have.
Research via Google reveals a number of alleged issues with firewire drivers for other devices but I can't help wondering is there's an inherent flaw in the way Lion is handling all firewire devices.
    Any thoughts? Anyone?

You called Apple Care. So I assume you have a machine that's in warranty. Either that, or you paid for this useless piece of information.
    So here's an interesting point...
I have purchased Lion. But I get NO support for it. NO warranty. I will argue that the age of my machine (or the existence of an Apple Care contract) is irrelevant. I have purchased a product and I want support / warranty for that product - nothing else.
If I buy a new refrigerator, I get a warranty for that. It's got nothing to do with any support contract I have on the house that I'm going to install it in.
Why should a piece of software such as Lion be immune from implied fitness for purpose? That's probably a rhetorical question.
So here's what I've done (only applies in the UK).
I have written to Apple and have told them that OS X Lion is not "fit for purpose" in the context of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and have also told them I exercise my Statutory Rights in English Law and have demanded a full refund.
I strongly recommend that others take the same stance. It may only be for the sake of £21 and a LOT of wasted time but I'm going to stand firm on this and I WILL take legal action if necessary.

  • TS1550 Time Machine issue with Mountain Lion.  Can you help?

I have an Iomega Mac Companion used as an external backup drive for my Imac running Mountain Lion. After launching Time Machine, I got an error message that said the backup couldn't' be completed because an error occurred while creating the backup folder.  I rebooted and everything was fine for 24 hours.  Since then, I get the same error message even after another reboot.  In Time Machine preferences it says "oldest backup none" and "latest backup none."
    Any suggestions?
    GR

Finally have it solved!!  Sort of...  I spoke with Mac support on two occasions and they were extremely helpful.  Thought the issue was with the firewire 800 connection.  Switched to a USB connection and everything worked great...for about 24 hours.  Then had the same error messages.  Chatted with Iomega tech support and they finally admitted that there are known issues with Mountain Lion, there is no work around and they have no intention of making it compatible with 10.8.
I'm returning the drive today.  Thanks for your help and suggestions.  Suggestions for a decent back up hard drive that will work with Mountain Lion?

  • I cannot access an older time machine backup after installing an new hard drive.

After installing a new hard drive I tried to access my older backups in time machine but cannot. They are there but do not light up and allow me to access them, or select them.

First, if you're worried about the possibility of losing a backup set, then your backup strategy is inadequate. You will certainly lose those backups, no matter what you do, when the drive hosting them fails, as it will eventually. If you take data safety seriously, you should have at least two complete, independent backups of all your data, one of which is off-site at all times. I suggest you make a second backup now, before doing anything else.
The action I suggested won't delete all the snapshots; only the selected one -- unless something goes wrong, which is always possible. Without adequate backups, nothing you do is safe.

  • Can't connect to old Time Capsule data after installing Lion

I recently installed Lion, and when I set up Time Machine to my old Time Capsule I've been using since TCs were released, and the software only shows data as if I've never backed up before, as well as saying "Oldest Backup" and "Latest Backup" as "none."  I have used this TC through Leopard and Snow Leopard, and there is lots of old backups on the drive.  The TC storage amount shows 91 of 500 GB available, so I know my data is still there.  I need TM to recognize the old backup data on the TC so I can access some old backups I have.  Please help if anyone knows what to do here!

Mount the "Data" volume of the Time Capsule and look at the dates of the "sparsebundle" files there.  If there seem to be two there for your MacBook Pro, then your old data is still there in the older backup.  To see that data, click-and-hold or control-click on the Time Machine icon and select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks".

  • Time Machine broken after 10.6 server upgrade

I recently upgraded our Mac Pro running 10.5 Leopard server to 10.6 Snow Leopard server, I just popped the disk in and ran the installer. The upgrade seemed to go fine, this is just a file server, and everything seems to function just as it had in OS 10.5, except for Time Machine. TM did not pickup where it left off with the internal TM drive for the server (not entirely unexpected). With no luck I've tried:
Erasing and repartitioning the drive (after turning TM off and deleting the preference file)
Removing the drive and erasing and partitioning on another computer, then trying TM through a USB connection (after turning TM off and deleting the preference file)
Below is the common error dialog and part of a log file. If I were to remove the folder/file listed in the log next time it would just be another file. What is consistent is that it doesn't seem to like what's in the Shared Items folder (the sharepoints users attach to).
Can anyone tell me how I might fix this?

I deleted the newly created sparsebundle. I also realized that the computer name had been changed and I changed it back to the original one. Here's the new problem. The TM says that I only have 127 GB and the amount of space needed to back up the disk is 140GB. I don't understand. It almost seems like it is trying to duplicate the entire backup. And this time around, I don't even see any new sparsebundle. I am stuck here.
Something caused TM to decide to start a new "sequence" of backups, as if you'd gotten a new Mac. That means a new, full backup to start with. The only thing that seems to have worked for some folks is a Restart. So if you haven't done one since the latest changes and failed backup attempt, it's worth a try.
If it still wants to do a full backup, you can't prevent it.
Depending on how much space you have on the TM drive/partition, your only choice may be to delete the "old" sparse bundle and let TM start over.
You may be able to delete some of the older backups to make room for the new, full backup, but that's tedious and time-consuming (see item #12 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip.)*
But that still leaves two problems: you'll have to manually "compact" the sparse bundle via Terminal to shrink it; and you'll have to continue to delete old backups this way (and manually compact them) to make room for new ones. Since TM is treating them as if they were from a different Mac, it won't delete them automatically, but will delete the oldest backups from the new set instead.
