Time Machine & iTunes Lock Up iMac

I use Time Machine on my iMac (running OS X 10.5.7) and backup files to a 1 TB Time Capsule wirelessly. During hourly backups my system will lock up or "freeze" forcing me to turn off the iMac and turn it back on. This happens almost daily and has been going on for quite some time now. It seems like iTunes could have something to do with this. When the system locks up iTunes is playing music and is always the first program to stop responding. From there, any other open application stops responding until the entire system locks. Is there a known conflict between Time Machine and iTunes? Any ideas?
Thanks - Jay

There have been reports of issues between Time Machine and iPhoto 8.0, but not iTunes that I am aware of. Try this.
Reboot, the Mac.
Once you are logged back in initiate a backup without any other applications active. Does is complete successfully?
Now, launch only one of the applications you normally have open when the "freeze" occurs and initiate a backup. Does is complete successfully?
Do this with each app leaving iTunes for last.
When you launch iTunes don't play any music yet, just initiate a backup. Does is complete successfully?
Now play some music and initiate a backup. Does is complete successfully?
Also, are you playing the music only on the Mac, or are you streaming it to another device on your network?
By process of elimination you may be able to narrow down the conflict. Cheers!

  • Using Time Machine to backup a iMac G5 and restore to an intel iMac

Is it possible to use Time Machine to backup my iMac G5 and restore my backup to a new intel iMac?
The reason being is that I my mother-in-law's company bought her a new intel Mac and she wants to trade with me since she only uses her Mac for e-mail, photos and accounting software.
I was thinking of making sure her data is preserved by using the migration assistant to transfer her data to my iMac G5 and then using my time machine backup to restore to her intel iMac. I have concerns about this method after reading about the intel/powerpc issues with time machine. I also have concerns that perhaps the version of MacOS 10.5 installed to my iMac G5 will not be optimized for intel.

Well, not entirely. You cannot install or restore a PPC version of OS X to an Intel Mac because the PPC system will not work on an Intel Mac. You can copy your personal files, most preference files, and third-party applications (although it would be preferable to update all PPC-only apps to universal binaries which perform better on Intel machines.
Another possible concern is if your mother's company is transferring the ownership to her or simply purchasing the unit for her to use. In the latter case the computer belongs to the company, not your mother. She cannot then give it to you because it isn't hers. This problem should be resolved beforehand because the company may one day want the computer back.

  • How do I restore my iPhoto library from my old macbook (stored in time machine) to my new iMac?

I have my old macbook backed up on my time machine.  The problem is, when i enter time machine on my new iMac, I can only restore files from the current iMac's backups.  I can go to finder, and find my files under the "shared>airport time capsule" menu, but I don't know how to safely and accurately restore the iPhoto library to the current iMac's iPhoto.
Most of the searches I did on this topic kept advising to enter time machine, find your file and hit restore, but I can not select files from my macbook's backup in time machine on the current iMac.

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder.
This seemed to do the trick.  I found the iPhoto library file and chose restore.  The question now is where to put the iPhoto library file.

If you are looking for high quality drives and enclosures I'd recommend these 3:

I use the LaCie's, I've got three connected to my system and a 4th acting as my TM drive on my MacBook Air. Any of the above would be welcome on my desk though.

  • 56 day Time Machine backups. and 27" iMac problems.

56 day Time Machine backups. and 27” iMac problems.
I have a problem and its driving me to mad. I wish to backup my iMac to a separate hard drive, When I start TimeMachine backup there is a window that appears ,I switch on Time Machine , select my Verbatim separate hard drive which I have partitioned into three section , one called time machine backups, and click ‘backup now’ the process starts by stating ‘436GB of 500GB available’, Preparing Backup’ and this stays there for ages and then when it does start to backup states backing up 234 byts of 28.3 GB . I left my IMac on for fifteen hours and it still read the same , 234 byts of 28.3 GB also at one time showed ‘time remaining’ as 56 Days. It will not allow me to reformat the Verbatim and will not allow me to eject the backup hard drive. On disc repair it says things are OK, disk partitions are OK. Could I have damaged the Verbatim Hard drive when I previously forced a shut down as it was taking so long and would not eject theVerbatim hard drive. Also Just recently it has been impossible to shut down the iMac as ‘Messages’  is working and won't even force quit. I switch of at the mains.     Please help.
    Equipment.
iMac 27” 3.2 GHz intel core i5 [four months old]
    Running OS X Yosemite
    Verbatim [SamsungHD]  [three years old]
Partitioned in Three , Formatted as Mac OS Extended [Journaled]
    connected by USB 2 Cable
    Thanks.

First you should NEVER EVER partition a Time Machine or any other backup drive for anythings else but backup. This is likely why you are having issues, buy yourself a high quality EHD such as an OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro, format it correctly and make that  your Time Machine backup HD.

  • My Time Machine Strategy for both iMac and MacBook...

    1) Get 1TB external drive, format as HFS+ (including the Gizmodo hint about reformatting Fat32 drives properly by setting GUID Partition table)
    2) Attach external drive to MacBook directly-run Time Machine overnight for initial full backup
    3) Attach external drive to iMac directly-run Time Machine overnight for initial full backup
    4) Attach external drive to my Mac Mini (running Leopard)-don't run Time Machine
    5) Point the iMac and MacBook to the networked drive for future incremental Time Machine backups, by mounting the external drive permanently attached now to the Mac Mini as a shared drive.
This way, I get the tedious original backup thru direct connection-native Firewire speeds, then rely on the networked wired (iMac) and networked wireless (MacBook) connections for the incremental backups (which, given our usage, isn't that major on an hourly or daily basis)
Anyone tried something like this successfully?

If  you have tried the fixes in Pondini's Time Machine Troublshooting, specifically #C12 and nothing helps, then it is time to let one of the genius types at an Apple Store take a look.

    Thanks for the follow up.
I think that we need to fine tune the exchange of information.
When you mentioned "capture", my first impression was that you were doing a DV and HDV capture firewire into the Premiere Elements Capture Window.
    Premiere Elements 12 Capture WIndow.
With your additional information, what I suspect you are doing is the following:
    1. Attaching your camera to the computer via USB (USB Mass Storage On) setting the computer AutoPlay for
    Organize and Edit
    Premiere Elements 12
which opens the Elements Organizer - Photo Downloader dialog.
    2. If I am guessing correctly so far, in this dialog what are you setting as the Save Location? And, what is being transferred photos or videos or both.
(I have done a run through with my camera, and this path can do both. I left the Save Location as "Pictures" and did not run into any "Insert Disc" messages.
    3. Again, if I am guessing correctly on this one (based on your "automatically Organizer opening", what happens if you transfer from camera to computer hard drive location, perhaps a folder on the computer desktop?
We will be watching for your follow up to confirm details.
    Thanks.

  • Time Machine wakes up sleeping iMac every hour - should this happen?

A previous question on this topic is now marked "answered," even though it isn't:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5687825&#5687825
Here's what happens. I put my iMac to sleep. Then I go to sleep. In the morning, I see that Time Machine has awakened my iMac once an hour to create a backup all night long. I don't believe this is how it should behave, but I see from the previous thread that it's happening on a lot of installs.
Any thoughts on how to prevent Time Machine from waking a sleeping Mac?
    Thanks.

Good point. I was assuming that Time Machine was the trigger. I still think it is, but it's worth looking into.
Given that I can test this only once an hour (at :42, my TM launch time), here's what I'm thinking. Is this the most efficient way to isolate whether it's Time Machine or another process waking the computer.
    1. Test One: Turn off Time Machine. Sleep the computer. Wait for :42. If the computer wakes in the next hour, it's definitely not Time Machine. If it does nothing in the next hour, Time Machine could be the culprit.
    2. Test Two: Next, turn on Time Machine. Sleep the computer. Wait for :42. If the computer wakes at the appointed time, it's not only possible that it's TM waking the computer, it's likely. If the computer remains asleep, the result is anomalous and tells us nothing.
Anything else I should be testing?

The Apple article will transfer everything from one volume to another.  Doing what you want is not simple, unfortunately.
See Transferring Home Folders not on a Startup volume, especially scenario #1 in the gray box there.
That's just recently reworded and revised; please advise if it's not clear or you have problems with it.

yes, given enough space on the destination drive (your library may grow over time). also, the drive needs to be connected directly to your Mac.
you might want to make sure the drive is not excluded from TM backups by checking in system preferences > time machine > options.
also, as for moving your iTunes library, see this read for tips/instructions.

  • HT201250 all my recent files in time machine are locked

Please explain how to assign function keys in OS 10.7.4. there is no function key (F1, F2, etc) option in the keyboard system preference pane. has it moved? I am using an ancient iMac Fruit keyboard attached to a Late 2010 Mac mini.F11 and F12 keys work.

Obviously the above question is not the one I am trying to ask. This too is a result of the recent restore (Sunday, the 19th) from Time Machine that I attempted. Anyway, when I try try to restore, say, my iPhoto Library, all the folders from Frisay, the 17th (and beyond) under my User are locked, so I cannot get into the User>Pictures folder to restore the iPhoto Library. This is also the case on numerous files and folders on my Time Machine Backup drive. Any suggestions?

  • Time machine fails on new iMac

I upgraded to a new 21.5" iMac from a g5 iMac.  I transferred my files and have two external hard drives one with photos and one for time
(all worked great on the g5). Main programs in use on the g5 is lightroom and iTunes for the iPhone and iPad.    I have been unable to get time machine to work with my files installed. Both the iMac and backup drive have been replaced with no results. When ihave a clean system with my files I have been able to use time machine for two days before it failed at best.
Every time time machine fails my system starts to act strange and I am forced to do a wipe and reinstall. Have done a complete wipe and install on the iMac and reformatted the new external drive (have left the photo drive off as I got a failure with out that drive connected).  I have not installed any of my files and so far time machine works.  I suspect some sort of corrupt file. Any suggestions on the next steps? I plan an waiting a few more days on the backups just to be sure they work without my files or programs installed.

    Wire fox terrier wrote:
Is there any software that can detect corrupt files? Disk utilities says all drives are fine.
    Not really.
Disk Utility (and other similar apps) check the File System on the disk (the various directories, catalogs, etc., for completeness and consistency, not the internal layout of each file.
Since different kinds of files have different data layouts, and no central registry of the rules,  there's no realistic way to check all the possibilities.
Unlike most backup apps, Time Machine does index them, however, and in the process sometimes finds problems.  If there's a serious problem, it normally sends a message naming the file, then fails, so you can exclude the file from being backed-up, fix it, or delete it.
Considering the symptoms you're seeing, it's likely either an intermittent hardware problem, or something you dragged from your G5 was already damaged, or damaged in the process, or came from a different OS (like Windoze) and didn't get translated properly.   Since you get no messages, it's going to be very tedious to narrow it down.
    From your previous post:
Both a capture program from apple tech and send to apple via about this Mac (system profiler) would not work.
Do you mean they wouldn't run properly, or you sent them to Apple and they either haven't responded or said they couldn't find anything?

  • Macbook air time machine files locked

Hi all, I have just changed form an iMac to a Macbook Air and used a My Passport Air to back up all of my data from the iMac. When I put the drive onto the laptop initially it worked and I could view all of the files no problem. However, my husband has since clicked the buttons for Time Machine to go ahead and do whatever it does and it has now locked any files that are in the 'other user' files from the iMac. So on the iMac there was a user account for him, me, guest and shared. Mine and the guest files have a no entry symbol and say I do not have permission to access these files.......HELP!
    Thanks in advance!

If so, then it's correct that you see an image for the MBA Time Machine. If you open the image you will see a "Back-ups" folder.
Does the Back-up appear to be completing to quickly? (I've had this problem a few times).
You can 'force' a deep traversal by starting the MBA in Safe Mode (hold the shift key while booting), then shutting down and re-starting the MBA and then starting Time Machine.
