Time Machine keeps failing during a full system restore.

I have an iMac from 2009 for some reason my HDD's got corrupted so my Mac wasnt able to boot from the HDD, though it was being recognized.  I read online the way to fix this was to reformat the HDD so I did that using the Disk Utility under the recovery disc.
Made sense to me, until I started to try to use Time Machine and restore my backed up files.  I'm using the snow leopard recovery disk and choosing restore under the utilities.  My external HDD comes up fine.  I select the date of my last backup and the destination of where I want to download it.  The restore then starts.  The restore gets to around 30% (aka the point that the OS finishes installing) and says it's completed installing the OS and would like to restart, problem is I'd like it to finish the backup completely not just the OS.  When it trys to restart the screen goes grey and the whole thing fails.  I'm trying it again now and will have a log of what went wrong soon.  After it fails I actually have a working Mac, I can log into it and all our User Accounts are there but once we log in it's missing so many applications and everything else.  Worst case scenario I'll just reinstall everything using time machine actually in the OS, but I'd like to just do a full restore.  Any ideas how to fix this?

  • Time Machine hangs at same point during a full system restore!

I recently had a complete crash on Mac Book Pro requiring reinstallation of Latest Leopard with Upgrade Disk. Tried to restore full system from time machine backup on time capsule, but the restore stops and does not proceed at around 37-39% complete. No error messages. On the phone with apple care, was told my back up was corrupt! Any ideas. I'm very disappointed right now, as my back ups were automatic via time machine schedule. Please help me get my system back!

    Andre,
You could, by-pass the Full Restore process and do an Erase & Install and Migrate. Then no 'manual' restore will be necessary. Of course, if the installer is hanging as a certain point with a Full Restore then there is no guarantee that it won't during this process as well. But it's still worth a try.
Also, if you are dealing with many GBs of user data and multiple accounts, you could have it migrate all this over in stages using Migration Assistant, rather than in one big chunk.
    *Erase, Install, & Migrate*
A final option, reserved for last resort, is to erase the hard disk, install a fresh copy of the Mac OS, and then use Migration Assistant during the installation to restore your user accounts. This is the Mac equivalent of ‘Slash and Burn’, and really should only be necessary if you require a completely fresh start.
    Procedure:
Verify that your Mac has uninterrupted AC power.
For faster migration of user data, Time Capsule/AirDisk users should connect their Macs directly to their Airport device via ethernet.
Insert your original Mac OS 10.5 Leopard DVD and reboot while holding down the “C” key.
At the “Welcome” screen click “Continue”.
Click “Agree” to the user agreement.
Select you Macs internal hard disk and click “Options”.
    Select “Erase and Install”.
Select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” for disk format. (Avoid selecting “Case-sensitive” unless you know what you are doing.)
    Click “OK”.
    Click “Continue”.
At “Install Summary” click “Customize” if you would like to eliminate certain Print Drivers, Fonts, or Language packages from being installed. Otherwise, click “Install”.
If you wish, you can click “Skip” when the DVD integrity check begins.
After the initial installation completes, your Mac will restart and you will see the video introduction.
At “Welcome” select your country and then preferred keyboard.
At “Do You Already Own a Mac?” you are asked “Would you like to transfer your information?”
    +from another Mac+
+from another volume on this Mac+
    +from a Time Machine backup+
+Do not transfer my information now+
Select “from a Time Machine backup” and click “Continue”.
At “Select a Backup Volume” choose your Time Machine backup disk and click “Continue”. (If you are attempting the migration wirelessly, then click “Join...” and select your network first.)
At “Transfer Your Information” check all the categories you wish to migrate over. If you wish your Mac to be in the same state as your last backup, then check everything. Give the installer time to calculate sizes.
Once that is complete, the “Transfer” button will become active and you can click it.
After the install, verify the registration information, click “Connect” and you are done.
After logging in, immediately go to System Preferences --> Time Machine, and turn “OFF” backups, even if a backup attempted has begun.
Next, Launch Disk Utility, select your Macs’ internal disk on the left, and click “Repair Disk Permissions”.
Interestingly, no Spotlight indexing appears necessary, so, once the permission repair is complete, turn Time Machine back “ON” in the Preferences. Time Machine should continue to backup to the same set of backups that it did prior to the restore. However, due to event logs being out of sync, the first backup will require a lengthy session of “Preparing...” as Time Machine performs a “deep traversal”. Allow this to proceed uninterrupted. Naturally, the first backup after a significant installation like this will be quite large so don’t be alarmed.
Let us know if this was helpful.
    Cheers!

  • Amount being backed up by Time Machine keeps growing during full backup

After some problems with Time Machine backup, I removed a bunch of stuff from my internal hard drive, reformatted my external HD used for backups, and started a new full backup.  Time Machine has been running for about 24 hours and gives me a status of Backing up: xx GB of yy GB.  Both xx and yy keep growing (apace) so that I don't believe xx will ever equal yy.
To cryptic?  Here are real numbers.  My internal disk being backed up contains 469.39 GB.  Backup status now says Backing up: 685.78GB of 754.42 GB.  Both numbers just keep growing.  What's going on here?  I'm happy to let Time Machine overnight (again) but, really, this can't be normal.

Start up in Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name), and run Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then restart as usual.
If you don't already have a current backup, you must back up your data before you take the above step. You may be able to back up, even if the system isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Directory corruption in a MacOS journaled volume is always the result of a drive malfunction. It's not caused by power failures, system crashes, or anything else. You might choose to tolerate such a malfunction once in the life of a drive. If it's repeated, the drive must be replaced, or there is some other hardware fault that needs to be corrected. Ignoring repeated directory errors will result in data loss.

  • Time Machine keeps failing

    Hello,
This is the most annoying problem I've run into in a while. Somewhat discouragingly, I've found a couple of other posts of similar problems — and none have answers. But let's try it.
Previously, I had the following setup, and it was working reliably: My iMac is my main system. I had a 2TB WD FW800 drive attached, using an adapter out of my T'bolt port. The iMac is cable-connected to my router (sadly an AT&T router, but that's another issue entirely). My Mini is used mostly as a media center, and it is also cable-connected to the router. The drive was partitioned into two partitions, both shared on my home LAN. I used one of the partitions as my Time Machine volume, and the other as utility storage. Both computers used that volume for TM; the iMac used a Backups.backupdb folder, the mini used a .sparsebundle. As I said, it was operating reliably.
Then I knocked the WD drive off my shelf. It no longer powered up. I decided to just replace it. I purchased a G-Drive 2TB (FW800), connected it, and attempted to configure it as I had the WD, i.e., with two partitions, and use the larger for TM. What seems to be happening is that after some fooling around that I feel I oughtn't need to do, I'll get one apparently-successful full backup on the iMac. Then when a subsequent backup is attempted (either waiting for one to start by itself, or invoking "Back Up Now"), it fails with one of those generic "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder".
The mini has similar issues. Often (not always) the backup fails with "the network backup disk doesn't support the required AFP features". When I check the permissions of the external drive, the owner has been changed from "me" and "staff" (or maybe "admin") to "system" and "wheel" (never understood that one). If I add myself and admin to the permission, give them r/w privileges, I'll get one apparently-successful full backup, as with the iMac. Then, when invoking "Back Up Now" from the TM menu, it fails. (Actually now, I'm not getting a failure message, but nothing seems to be happening; the "latest backup" is still the original. It goes thru "Preparing backup..." but never copies anything.)
I have tried reformatting and repartitioning the drive (GUID), I've tried using only one partition, I've reinstalled the 10.9.4 combo updater (on both computers). I also note that if I select the current TM Backup and click "Remove Disk", it doesn't reappear in the list below (ought it?), so I've tried using the other partition for my TM volume, I've tried new volume names. Sometimes after various flailing about TM will ask me for logon credentials, sometime not. Sometimes reformatting is a challenge, it won't let me unmount the disk unless I turn off file sharing — again, something I didn't used to have to do, I believe, and even then that doesn't always allow me to dismount it.
I have the feeling that by now everything is really screwed up. How might I totally reset Time Machine, as if I had never ever used it at all (and sharing, for that matter)? Is it even possible? Looking at another approach, is "Archive and Install" of OSX still an option is these disk-free days? Is there something I can do or examine regarding the drive? Disk First Aid finds nothing (although it did find problems at one point, then, feeling hopeful, I reformatted and started over, but the problems still recurred).
I just tried reformatting and starting again, but I didn't see anyplace where I might do anything different. The mini gave me the "AFP Features" error as above; I added myself and administrator to the permissions list and gave them r/w privileges, after which I got the "your backup disk has changed identity, do you still want to use it" message. I clicked "Use Disk", and it seems to be proceeding. Both systems are now going thru a first backup. Problem is it'll be hours before I get any results. The iMac is going thru an apparently-normal first backup.
Any advice would be helpful. I can't even figure out how I might present this to the Genius Bar or a One-on-One session.
    Jeff

    OK, a little bit more...
If, on the mini, in TM prefs, I click Select Disk... my TM volume appears twice, once at the tom, the current disk, and once in the list below. However, when you hover the pointer over each of these entries, it shows the URL; the "current" disk displays afp://Andomeda._afpovertcp_._tcp.local/Aphrodite but the one in the "choose me" list displays afp://Andomeda.local/Aphrodite . Now, if I Remove the current disk (the afpovertcp volume), and Use the other one, the one that then shows at the top, the current one, is again afp://Andomeda._afpovertcp_._tcp.local/Aphrodite .
    So now I'm completely confused.

  • Time Machine keeps failing even with new HD

I recently bought an external HD (Western Digital 1T) that I have been using to keep some files on and back up my Macbook Pro 15" (2010 model). Suddenly it recieved an error message stating that the back up failed. So I restarted my computer and tried it again and this time I the back up would fail because the computer would suddenly eject the HD. Whatever the problem was it rendered my external HD useless and completely unreadable. So I chalked it up to faulty software on the external. I just bough a new one (same as the previous) and on my first backup it go the same message. Now I know that I have a corrupted file if not many of them that are causing this to happen. I have no idea how to fix this problem and have already spent more then enough money on new HD's.
I copied my log below if this helps anyone. Please help me figure out what I need to fix.

Time Machine is having trouble with some files on your internal HD, but also writing to the (hidden) log file it keeps on the external HD.
That looks like a problem with the external HD, or the connection to it.
First, be sure it's formatted properly; see #C1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, see #C3 there.  Start by excluding the files(s) in the messages; if that doesn't help, see the pink box there.

  • HT201250 My time machine keeps failing to backup due to space not available.

I have a 500 gb external that I use for backups, but for some reason there is only 208gb available for backup. When I open up my time machine, I have deleted all  of my old backups. For some reason, I can not get at the other available space. Everytime I open up time machine, there is nothing there now. I don't know how to access the other space. Where did the other space go & how do I get it back?
I did recently take this machine in to have a new hard drive installed & they used the time machine to back up all of my files. Now I don't know how to access that other space. Any thoughts?

I'm not certain that I fully understand you situation.
I surmise that you have deleted all of the files from the external HDD that you use for Time Machine.  If that is the case, I would I would erase and reformat the Time Machine Disk in Disk Utility and reinstall it as your Time Machine disk.
    Ciao.

  • Time Machine won't back up after system restore

I just restored my system after a failure, and now Time Machine won't back up my hard drive. It gets about 40 out of 90 Gigabytes done, and then gives me an error message that just says that there was an error while backing up, and doesn't give any other information. I ran a Verify Disk with Disk Utility, and there is nothing wrong with the backup drive, and there is more than 200 Gigabytes of space left on that drive.
    Thank You.

Ok, so here's the thing: I tried backing up again today, and it worked just fine. Before, what would happen is a message would pop saying "an error has occurred during backup" (or something close to that). The point is, the message didn't give any detail.
No, the point is, you seem to have ignored this:
See the Time Machine - Troubleshooting post at the top of this forum.

  • How can one do a full system restore from Time Machine to a Macbook Air

I recently had a major crash on my two internal disc DualG5. The system internal disk failed completely and I used Time Machine to do a full system restore to the second internal disc. It worked PERFECTLY!! I followed the instructions in support
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15638.html
This involved inserting the Leopard DVD into the optical drive and backing up from my external LaCie time machine backup.
I also have a MacBook Air. I use an external USB HD drive as Time Machine backup. The Air only has one USB port. I have an external DVD drive for the Air. Clearly, I will not be able to mount the DVD and External disk at the same time unless I use a small hub. I guess this will work but is there any other work around. Could I do a full reinstall and then connect the external HD?

    Richard,
Alternatively, you could use Remote Disc Sharing (via the DualG5) to do the install and reserve the USB port for the Time Machine disk.

  • Unable to boot after Time Machine full system restore!!

I was having some serious slowdowns with my computer. I did multiple RAM and HD hardware tests, everything seemed to be working fine. I had recently deleted a bunch of files in order to free up some HD space, so I thought that may be the culprit. So I did a Time Machine backup and restored the Powerbook to it's original 10.3 software. All was fine. Then I upgraded back to 10.5 and all was fine. Then I did a Time Machine full system restore overnight and got the message "Your restore was successful, you must now restart your computer" (or something to that effect). Now I get the start-up chime and startup screen (apple logo) but then the computer shuts itself down. I have reset the PMU and PRAM to no effect. I have tried booting up in safe made, also no dice. I have tried starting it up with the time machine HD attached - doesn't help. I guess I'll need to hit the genius bar but wanted to ask the friendly discussion forum folks first. thanks in advance.

    Hi coldengray
Did you try to start from your System-CD? Hold down C-key during startup, start DiskUtility from the menu and verify/repair disk and permissions there.
If the CD is not available you can also connect your TimeMachine-Disk, select it as startup volume in System Preferences/StartupDisk, restart and then run DiskUtility from folder Applications/Utilities
    Good luck P

  • Time Machine: Full System Restore On New iMac...

I currently use Time Machine on my 24" iMac with a 500GB external hardrive. If something were to happen to my current iMac (i.e. My kid knocks it off the desk and it breaks), and I was forced to buy a new one, would I be able to use Time Machine to restore the new iMac to the last Back-Up of the old iMac? If so, would it automati ally transfer all of my pictures, movies, music, etc. to the new iMac as well? Thanks for any help y'all can give me on this subject.

not using full system restore utility on the leopard install DVD. your current system lacks hardware drivers that would be needed for a newer computer and if you do a full system restore of your current computer onto a newer computer using the restore utility on the leopard DVD it will most likely not even boot.
however, during the original computer setup you'll be given an option to transfer user data, settings and applications from a TM backup of your old computer. that option does not transfer system files but it does transfer everything else including your pictures, movies, music etc.
You can also do the same thing later using Migration Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities).

  • Time Machine question re: full system restore

OK I am pretty sure this in the FAQ but the answer still isn't overly clear to me so I'm going to ask anyway...apologies in advance.
I recently found out that my iMac hard drive is failing, I have an appointment with the Genius Bar in two days to see what is wrong and get it fixed.
In the meantime, I am currently backing up my hard drive using Time Machine but I am hearing conflicting reports as to whether or not I can do a full restore from Time Machine should my iMac have it's hard drive or other components replaced.
So...question: Can I directly restore my iMac (with a possible new hard drive or other components) from Time Machine? If not, how can I do it.
I am most worried about my photos in iPhoto as my wife will murder me if I lose our wedding and honeymoon photos.

yes, you can. you can do it using full system restore utility on the leopard install DVD. there are no ifs or buts about it. where is that "conflicting info" coming from?
If not, how can I do it.

There seems to be a problem with that file. See the blue box in #C3 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Note that the /private folder is normally hidden, so you'll need to click the +Show inisible items+ box.

  • Time Machine Backup fails after Restore

Had my 500GB HD on my iMac fail. After being replaced by Apple, I performed a restore from 1TB time machine backup. After this was done, I set time machine back up to back up to this 1TB drive. I want it to append to the previous backups. However, the backup fails due to "backup is too large for the backup volume". It doesn't seem to want to append to previous backups but thinks this is an entirely new backup, which I guess is mostly true. I suspect this has to do with UUIDs of the new and old drives, but I'm not sure how to correct it (I'd prefer not to just wipe the backup disk and start over). I migrated backups before from one extenal HD to another but can't remember what I did... If anyone has steps to fix this, let me know em. Thanks.
    Here's the time machine log:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/MyBook-Mac/Backups.backupdb
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
    Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|
Starting pre-backup thinning: 506.55 GB requested (including padding), 502.31 GB available
No expired backups exist - deleting oldest backups to make room
Error: backup disk is full - all 0 possible backups were removed, but space is still needed.
Backup Failed: unable to free 506.55 GB needed space
Backup failed with error: Not enough available disk space on the target volume.

yes, that's correct. TM will make a full backup after a full system restore on a new hard drive because the UUIDs of the new drive is different from the old one.
you may try the following hack to get around it

But I make no promises about how well it works.

  • Time Machine backup fails in extended network

    Dear all,
I've recently setup an extended network using 2 additional AirPort Express units connected to the main Airport Extreme modem (all working well). I'm using the Extreme for Time Machine Backups, which used to work just fine as well.
However, when connected to the Expresses, the Time Machine Backups fail with the message that the backup file is already in use. I'm guessing the Express modem tries to connect to the backup file, while the Extreme is keeping the file stand-by or something.
Does anybody know a fix to this problem?
    Kind regards,
    Dennis

It took a Snow Leopard a while but after 2 days it started working again. I've checked whether the connection was directly to the Extreme, but the connection actually went through one of the bridged Expresses.
I guys one just has to hope for the best ;-)
I've upgraded to Lion last week and backup works fine with the new operating system as well.
