Time Machine keeps loosing connection with external drive

I can find the external drive, and look at the files there but I keep getting an error message that Time Machine failed to complete a backup.
I HAD a Time Capsule, but it was showing some problems a year or so ago, so I have an external 1TB  Lacie external drive since that time. The Lacie drive was working fine until this week, just a few days after I downloaded the new iPhoto & iTunes. May or may not have anything to do with this?
Anyway, I reconnected my Time Capsule and it has been working on backing up for about 16 hours, and still says "in progress." It is working as I can hear the hard drive when I access the drive to look at files.
Can I erase all the data on the TIme Capsule in the hopes of getting it to work again? Reformat the Capsule?
Any ideas? I hate being without the peace of mind of having a Time Machine I can go to restore my files, etc.
Gary

What OS are you running on the Mac? (ie is the profile up to date, SL is seldom a problem).
You can erase the drive in the TC.. just open the airport utility and go to the disk page.. select the erase button.. do a quick erase.. anything else will take several hours. And is unnecessary if you are writing new files to it.
Are you using ethernet to the TC.. first backup should be ethernet.
Do a verify disk for the Lacie drive? Corruptions and drive failures are not uncommon.

  • Can I use Time Machine to archive like an external drive?

I've backed up my computer to Time Machine and everything from my computer is there, but I have a new project which needs me to archive 21 pieces of artowrk that have multiple photo images for aech, and they are large size originals. Can I upload these files to a folder in Time Machine or directly on my external drive, so I don't have to have all of these files taking up space on my main computer?

You can, but it is not recommended.
Apparently you cannot partition an existing Time Capsule volume if that is what you are using.
Excerpt from ASC contributor Pondini's Time Machine FAQ:
    3. Can I use my TM disk for other stuff?
Yes.  Time Machine will not delete anything you put there.
But it's much, much better to partition an external drive into 2 (or more) parts, also called volumes.  Assign one to Time Machine, for its exclusive use for backups;  use the other partition(s) however you want.
(Unfortunately, though, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal disk.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for some alternatives)

  • Best way to transfer time machine back up files between external drives

I have to move my time machine backup files from one external drive to another.  I was planning to simply move it through finder, but it has been "preparing files" for 2 days straight.  The number of items sowing in the status bar with the status of "preparing to copy XYZ items" has continued to stadily grow.  Is there a better route or should I let it run till it is complete?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's exactly the way to transfer Time Machine backups to an external drive, so let the Finder do its job. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5096
Note that the destination's external drive must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"

  • How do I tell Time Machine to add a new external drive to be backed up?

How do I tell Time Machine to add a new external drive to be backed up?  I have an external drive with data I need to add to my overall back up with what's on my mac.  I have a separate drive already active as the Time Machine backup disk.  I can see how to EXCLUDE disks, but how do I ADD that new external drive to regular backups?
I have 10.8.5 system on my Mac laptop.

Remove the drive from the list of items set to be excluded. It needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for this to be possible.

  • I am trying to move previous Time Machine back ups off an external drive to my new Time Capsule. How do I do that?

I have my previous time machine back ups on an external drive and I want to move those to my new 2tb Time Capsule. How can I make this happen?

    You probably cannot do it..
The backup is very different from a local drive to a network drive.
    Look through the Pondini KB.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
You can move the backup from a local to another local disk or network to another network.. but there are issues even doing that.
IMHO.. don't... just start a new backup and keep what you already have saved up.. if you don't need it in 6months time.. or a year.. then you can wipe it.

  • Can i resume a Time Machine backup of an attached external drive (no system, just data) on a different laptop?

I am trying to find out if I can use a Time Machine (specifically on a 2013 Time Capsule) backup of an external drive (only data, no system) attached to a laptop, and then connect that same external drive to another laptop and resume the backup? Or is the Time Machine backup of an attached external drive a laptop "dependant" backup?
Additional info: The laptops in question are 15" MacBook Pro and a 17" MacBook Pro from 2011 running OSX 10.9 (Mavericks)

    You are welcome.
I don't think there is a need to start a new discussion unless you want to.
You should have more than one backup of each computer. Hard drives do fail. Time Machine can alternate drives or have a Time Machine and a clone.
The concern arises because i was told that when a wireless Time Machine backup is interrupted the sparsebundle gets sort of "locked" or "damaged", and although the backups can be accessed, no further Time Machine backup is possible. One must that a brand new backup.
Apple support article. Don't let the title bother you. Look at Additional Information, which explains what happens when a backup gets interrupted. I also am including a link for troubleshooting. C3 explains what you can try if the backup is interrupted.

Are you losing the connection to iTunes on the iPad or the computer? You are saying that iTunes is updated. Of course iTunes is updated when you update the iOS software. That's a no brainer.
If you mean that iTunes is updated on the computer, that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with downloading and updating apps on the iPad itself so changing the date on the iPad, signing in and out of the stores on the iPad .... Doing any of that on the iPad would have nothing to do with iTunes on your computer.
If .... you have not been able to connect to the iTunes or app stores at all on the iPad - try this ...
Settings>Privacy>Location Services>System Services (swipe to the bottom of the page to find this)>Location Based iAds>Off.
If the downloads are stalled or "waiting" - try these suggestions.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If you can't connect at all - you can also try rebooting your router. Unplug it from power for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.

  • Got new ATV and all set up. It keeps loosing connection with iTunes on laptop and have tried everything suggested in set up guide. It works fine for a while then the iTunes account vanishes from 'computer' menu TV screen.  Full Wifi signal on both devices

Got new ATV and all set up. It keeps loosing connection with iTunes on laptop and have tried everything suggested in set up guide. It works fine for a while then the iTunes account vanishes from 'computer' menu TV screen.  Full Wifi signal on both devices so can't think what could be causing it to happen. Any suggestions please?

Sorry, I updated another thread I was a part of but didn't update my own thread.....ughhh!
I updated all of my ATV 2's and 3's to the latest firmware when it was released and have been problem free since. I do believe the major issue of not being able to connect after a period of inactivity has been corrected with the latest ATV firmware.
I can look at my network connection table using "netstat -an" in a CMD window and I do not see the massive number of connections I saw before the update.
Here is a link to the other thread I was referring to above:

Have you applied the latest firmware updates to your ATV 3's?

Time Machine cannot find my external back-up drive when I click on the "select disk" button.  No drive is listed. I have run a Time Machine back-up to this external drive in the past.    Any suggestions

Does the disk appear in Disk Utility?

  • HT201250 My 10.7.3 Time Machine won't work with external disks. Worked fine with Snow Leopard, and even Lion 10.7.1

My 10.7.3 Time Machine won't work with external disks. Worked fine with Snow Leopard, and even Lion 10.7.1
I have tried everything, even buy new external disk from different manufacture.
If I cant get a fix soon, I am downgrading back to SnowL.

Still no luck. I tried all the tricks, reconfiguring TM (remove selected disk option, and re-setting it, and trying different disks). Tried new combo updater, and the newer TM update after that. Tired two different disks too (one is my older firewire WD MyBook 1TB, and my brand new 3tb Seagate GoFlex USB... either one plugged into back of computer - no intermediary devices). I did get the TM buddy wiget and it produced the following log, from the last attempt, where I setup lots of exclusions so that backup quantity was small (under 10gb). Still it failed to complete. Here is that log, for what it is worth:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/TM-Disk/Backups.backupdb
9.56 GB required (including padding), 911.15 GB available
Waiting for index to be ready (101)
Copied 0 files (0 bytes) from volume Mac HD.
    Backup canceled.
To prove a point, I will take these disks are run them on my other Tiger and Snow Leopard laptops to prove TM works fine on those with these disks. But I fear the only options are to either have my tech re-install LION... or just have him reinstall SL instead. Im at wits end.

  • When using Time Machine to back up to external drive, does Time Machine back up content in your Trash folder?

When using Time Machine to back up to external drive, does Time Machine back up content in your Trash folder?

Go to System Preferences (under the Apple menu) > Time Machine and click the Options button. Click the "+" button in the lower left. In the resulting dialog, check the Show invisible items checkbox. Go to your home folder and look for Trash. Click the Exclude button in the lower right.

  • Time Machine formatted itself on my external drive despite pressing "Don't Use"

I have an external hard drive that has been in use on/off for years. I even had backups on it (not using Time Machine). I mounted this hard drive, it was taking a while to mount. A prompt came up to ask if I wanted to use this drive as a time machine backup. I said "Don't Use". It hanged. Meanwhile, I opened disk utility twice. Both I had to force quit. After a while I relaunched finder.
Assuming it would cancel the time machine prompt. Only when did the finder eventually relaunch that the drive mounted to see that all my files where gone and looking in Thermal under ls -a to see their we're spotlight and time machine files along with some oddly named thing. About 1GB Is in use on the drive(I had much more that a gig on it). It is a TB drive
Here is the output from the ls -a on the volume

Anyway would a tool like this (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) help get back my files and format back to what I had previously? Or I am going in the wrong direction? What should I do?
Thanks. If you have any questions please reply below

    Thank you Thomas,
I should have mentioned that the drive is formated as FAT32 and I  ran verify disk on the drive and this error keep coming up until I stop the process :
"2013-02-16 12:06:23 +0000: / has entries after end of directory
    2013-02-16 12:06:23 +0000: Truncate? no
    2013-02-16 12:06:23 +0000: Extend? no"
Will the tools mentioned in you post work with FAT 32? I am looking at Data Rescue 3 becuase of the FileIQ functionality since I know I have obsure file formats on there
Does this help or it is irrelevant?

  • Time Machine won't back up external drive to Time Capsule

I recently got a Time Capsule, and successfully set it up to back up my iMac's primary drive, but for some reason Time Machine won't back up my external drive to the Time Capsule.
I removed the external drive from the exclusion list in System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and from what I've read this should be sufficient to make Time Machine back up the drive.
The external drive is connected to my iMac via Thunderbolt > Thunderbolt-to-Firewire adaptor > Firewire 800 input, and the Time Capsule is connected via Ethernet to my LAN.
Since I'm using Ethernet, I've disabled Wi-Fi on the Time Capusule by going to AirPort Utility > My Time Capsule > Edit > Wireless > Network Mode > Off.
The reason I believe the external drive is not being backed up is because when I click the Time Machine icon in the upper-right status bar and choose "Enter Time Machine", none of the folders on external drive show any older versions.
Furthermore, when I click Finder > Time Machine Backups > Backups.backupdb, I can see only one sub-folder which has the name of my iMac's primary drive. I can't see any equivalent folder for my external drive.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I don't see anything you have done wrong.. perhaps it does backup in a different way.
Load the widget.. A1 here... http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
That will allow you to track the log of TM to see what it is doing.
I would also try rebooting the computer.. exclude the drive again.. reboot.. and remove the exclusion.
You should be able to check the actual settings of TM in plist file.
And you can do a full reset of TM as well.. See A4. Check what is in the file. Pondini lists the location for you.
Nothing surprises me with Mountain Lion ...!!

  • Time machine can't connect to external HD

    Hi,
    Quick summary:
I have a partitioned external HD (Lacie Network Space 2, 1Gb) running both a Time Machine partition and a regular external HD partition
Some time ago my iMac broke down and I decided to do a clean install
I (somehow, can't remember how) accessed the files I wanted from the external HD and moved them to the computer and then I put the HD away and stopped using the Time Machine functionality
I left some of my iPhoto library on the Time Machine, I haven't needed them for ages, but now I do, which bring me to my current situation:
I can't access my Time Machine partition on the HD. I can access the the normal external HD partition just fine. I've tried both over wifi and having the HD directly hooked to the computer. I just doesn't connect, it doesn't even allow me to press "connect as". I have update a couple times between now and then so maybe it has something to do with the OS version?
Basically all I want to do is to access the files within the Time Machine Partition, and format the whole HD and use it as a normal network HD.
    Currently I have OsX 10.9.5.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    An update:
I am able to access the Time Machine partition through the Lacie browser based dashboard, I can go through contents folder for folder. But it is incredibly slow and the way I remember Time Machine folder structure being it would take forever to extract all my pictures. Let alone go through if there's something else I might want to keep before I format.
Anyway, this would seem to confirm the problem is with OS X?

  • Time Machine keeps failing even with new HD

I recently bought an external HD (Western Digital 1T) that I have been using to keep some files on and back up my Macbook Pro 15" (2010 model). Suddenly it recieved an error message stating that the back up failed. So I restarted my computer and tried it again and this time I the back up would fail because the computer would suddenly eject the HD. Whatever the problem was it rendered my external HD useless and completely unreadable. So I chalked it up to faulty software on the external. I just bough a new one (same as the previous) and on my first backup it go the same message. Now I know that I have a corrupted file if not many of them that are causing this to happen. I have no idea how to fix this problem and have already spent more then enough money on new HD's.
I copied my log below if this helps anyone. Please help me figure out what I need to fix.

Time Machine is having trouble with some files on your internal HD, but also writing to the (hidden) log file it keeps on the external HD.
That looks like a problem with the external HD, or the connection to it.
First, be sure it's formatted properly; see #C1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, see #C3 there.  Start by excluding the files(s) in the messages; if that doesn't help, see the pink box there.
