Time Machine Keeps Selecting Different Drive After Restart

Here is my situation, which is a bit different from most people's I think:
I have a Mac Pro running 10.5.5 with 4 internal hard drives: 250GB Original, 750GB, 750GB, and a 500GB. I also have a MacBook. I used to have things setup so that my iTunes for the Macbook was stored over the network on a 750GB drive, and the Mac Pro AND the Macbook had their Time Machine files on the 500GB.
Then I switched things around so that the iTunes is now on the 500GB and the Time Machine is on a 750GB. I used "restore" in disk utility to copy over the Time Machine files (although this worked it could only be done a specific way after much trial and error - ask for details if interested). It worked, and the Mac Pro backs up flawlessly right where it left off on the new drive.
The Macbook WILL find and load the old sparse file from its new location. But I have to manually select it EVERY TIME. The problem is that despite the fact that I completely erased the 500GB drive first, it stills defaults to that drive for TM. AND this is AFTER I have thrown out the time machine preferences from the library. It will work fine for infinite backups as long as I don't shut down the computer. As soon as I restart, it defaults back to the other drive and I have to repeat that cycle all over again of throwing out the preferences, changing the TM disk, and it is never easy to get it to "see" the drive I want...etc.
Any thoughts much appreciated!

Glenn,
Thanks so much for your reply. Unfortunately that did not work. As soon as I connect to my iTunes drive, I can see the name of the backups volume change in the TM preferences pane from "backups" (what it should be) to "music."
In the interest of presenting as much info as possible, I will add that I always have to select my iTunes folder before opening the Itunes app. I had it set up before (when drives were reversed) so that my "music" volume would open as a login item, since I was tired of doing it manually every time. The TM just mounted normally whenever it needed to. It worked perfectly. I thought that maybe I could fix this current problem by having BOTH my music and backups volumes mount at startup. Interestingly, even if I select them both, the mac will only mount one or the other, not both - in fact one of the drives disappears from the accounts>login items pane after startup as if I had never put it there! It CAN mount two drives though if I select another, third drive that I also have shared that is neither for music or backups. Just not THESE two. I am at a loss....I am pretty sure I erased these drives before making the switch - I know one of them I even wrote to zeros.... Thanks again.

I haven't been able to make a time machine backup in 63 days.  Getting very concerned.  Running OSX 10.8.2.  Time machine spends a lot of time preparing, and after it finally starts making a backup it fails part way through.  I used to be able to make backups just fine using the same external drive.  Verified both backup and Mac disk.  Deleted TimeMachine prefs, re-started....still won't work.  Console only shows these messages for the daemon:

  • Dynadock V Keeps Updating same driver after restart and wont connect to external monitor

Earlier this week dynadock did an update and now everytime my computer turns on it installs the same update and says successfully installed.  Ever since this started my second monitor connected through dynadock is not working.  I've checked cords, cycled power to everything and still the same.

Performed system restore as far back as it would allow me, but i do not believe that it was far enough.  Still had same problem.  I attempted to uninstall only the video driver, and it failed, so i attempted to uninstall all of dynadock and everything but video driver uninstalled it failed again.  restarted tried again failed again.  So i'm running the install cd now see if maybe i'll get lucky and it'll work it'self out. but i doubt it.
Any idea how to get the video driver uninstalled?  I can't find it under device manager either.

  • Time machine not detecting external drive after installing OS X Server

    Hi,
Recently I installed OS X Server to set up a vpn but while I have been setting it up I have noticed other Mac's with in the network can not back up anymore the the external hard drive that they used to.
I have made sure that the external drive is on shared folders etc. and the other Mac's can detect the hard drive if I use connect to server to connect to my Mac Mini that the hard drive is attached to.
I have tried to connect it to the Airport we have here but it wont come up on any computers under the Airports name, we are using its hard drive at the moment to back everything up to but we need to back up to the external hard drive ASAP.
The hard drive in question is a SmartStor DS4600 6TB using USB 3 to connect to the Mac Mini and all the Mac's are running Mavericks.
This needs to be resolved ASAP so any help would be greatly apreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

I *think* with OS X Server to use an attached external drive as a TM backup, it has to be setup this way. You're right, a shared folder is setup under a Backups folder. However, each Mac on the LAN will create its back up in the Backups/Shared and those back ups will be visible if they ever need to restore.
I don't understand why you need to have the back ups created at the root of the volume. And I don't know if or how this can be done using OS X Server. I have always used the TM Backup service and have not tried to share an externally attached drive to be used as a back up. You may be able to do this by going into the File Sharing service and define your back up drive there. You'll have to give read/write permissions to each user just like you would do for any other shared folder.

  • Question: Why does Time Machine hang on cloned drive?

I migrated my Main HD to a faster WD Velociraptor. I used the great utility Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drive.
After a successful clone, I renamed the orignal HD (old) and duplicated the original HDD name to the new one. I shutdown, and removed the old HDD from my MacPro, and installed the New Main HD clone in it's place and rebooted.
The system came up and all looked fine until Time Machine started to index and then deleting old Backups indication. It did this for 2 hours! I let it run overnight figuring it was cleaning old backups.
This morning it had /!\ as the icon and Failed Backup indicated.
Instead of deleting the old TM backups folder on the specific HDD I use, I just formatted it, and re-assigned it as the TM HDD. It is fine now.
So what happened? How can I prevent this? Is there some file hidden and not cloned that affects TM?

    Eddie Ski wrote:

Most likely, it failed for lack of space for the new backup.
So what happened? How can I prevent this? Is there some file hidden and not cloned that affects TM?
The new drive may have all the same stuff on it as the old one, but it does have a different UUID (Universally Unique IDentifier), and that's what OSX uses to keep track of drives, not their names.
So Time Machine sees a different drive, and its whole role in life is to back up whatever's new or changed, so that's what it does. You cannot prevent it.

  • After upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?

after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?
before the upgrade, i could open time machine without the need for having the back up disk plugged in.

Ok. I got it to work, sort of....
As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.

  • Time Machine keeps giving me an error message when I try to back up to my Lacie drive.

Time Machine keeps giving me an error message when I try to back up to my Lacie drive. It won't back up and I can't find where to fix it.

I was having the same problem with my LaCie hard drives, both of them had errors like that and wouldn't eject properly. They would be fine after turning off and then remounting and so on, but then it would start again after a while. So I looked on LaCie's web site for any software updates and I found a usb firmware update from last October and applied it to both drives and now they're perfect. Sorry, I can't find it on their web site right now, but you might want to remember this if it persists and apply the update if you haven't.

  • HT201250 Can I use Time Machine on two different Macs to back up to one external drive?

Can I use Time Machine on two different Macs to back up to one external drive?
I have one 1T Western Digital backup drive that works well with Time Machine and my MacBook Pro.  I now want to back up my wife's MacBook Air using Time Machine on her Mac and want to know if I can use the same WD external drive or if I need to get a 2nd back up drive?  If I can use one external drive for the two Macs do I need to do something special on the drive or will Time Machine do it automatically?

Yes. You will need to configure Time Machine preferences on each computer to backup to the same drive. Note that you cannot connect the backup drive to both machines at the same time.

How can I get my time machine to allow me to recover files again?
After upgrading MBA to OS X, the time machine still backs up the files; but, I'm not able to navigate within the time machine or select any folders or files for restore.
I've searched and can not find a solution to the problem that's being encountered.

Yeap that all makes sense now.
Do you only have the current backup showing in the TM display?? Won't it fill in the rest?
Over wireless are you waiting for the indexing to finish.. ??
Previous backup may not show for a couple of hours.
Long short of it.. Mavericks version of TM is a pain.
Sometimes it is easier to completely ignore the TM backup and do the restore manually.
I have posted the details here. See if this helps.

  • Time Machine Backup, 2 external drives with different exclusions

    Hello
Does anyone know if it's possible to use two separate external drives in Time Machine to backup different parts of my mbp hard drive? That is, I want to use ex.drive1 to back up work files at work and ex.drive2 to back up personal files at home. In time machine options, I can set the folders for exclusion, but currently have to set those each time I back up at home/work.
    Thanks,

There's no easy way to do that with Time Machine. As you see, it only has one set of exclusions and one destination drive at a time.
In theory, and if you're careful, you might be able to manipulate the preference file where all that's stored. Set TM up for home, say, then copy or rename that version. Then set it up for work and do the same.
The file is at the top level of your drive, not in your home folder:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
You could probably write an Automator workflow or AppleScript to simplify swapping the files.
    Otherwise, two alternatives:
Back up everything in both places.
Use Time Machine at home, and a different app, such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, at work, or vice-versa.

  • Time machine (older) backups not recognized after renaming the drive

    Hi all.
For quite sometime I've been backing up my data (in my Mac Book Pro) using the time machine to an external drive.
Recently I changed the name of the drive I was backing up to from Finder and now I see the older backups using Finder but they're not recognized in Time Machine mode.
Is there anything I should do to make it know that those older files are actually in the same drive? I'm guessing changing a couple of lines in a text-only file (such as an XML file) where there's a file mapping will fix the issue but I'm not sure which file and where exactly that is.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the valuable online resource you shared.
There's a lot of critical information there. Bookmarked.
Back to the issue… Before taking any action I created an additional user in Mac OS. This had nothing to do with the awkward behavior of the TM, it was just something I should have done long ago.
After I created that user I wanted to make sure that the problem persists before doing anything. So I logged of the new account and switched to the admin account, and for the one last time I entered the TM mode. Guess what? While managing users the system must have corrected something and it finally decided to recognize my older backups! This is pretty awkward but it just happened and I'm seeing all the backups in TM mode now.
Thanks again for the help and the link

  • How to use Time Machine with an external drive?

Hi…I’m new to this, I hope someone can help me=)
I’m trying to back up my Macbook Pro 10.6.8 using Time Machine with an external drive Seagate Backplus Slim. I’ve tried several solutions that I’ve found through different forums but still wouldn’t work.
Every time I opened Time Machine, it has this appearance:
Then when I click “Select backup Disk”, it goes on like this:
And after I click “Set Up Time Capsule”, it has this:
It keeps saying that it couldn’t find AirPort wireless, even though I have good WIFI connection.
Anyone know what I should do? Please help….Thanks everyone

  • Replaced hard drive, but can't access Time Machine backups of old drive

My internal hard drive was failing so I replaced it. I told the people that replaced it that I could install the System myself and that I had backups of my data.
So, I got the machine home, booted up from the Snow Leopard Install DVD and selected Restore from Time Machine. I chose the last backup which was Mountain Lion 10.8.2. It crashed after several minutes.
So, I restarted. But I had my finger on the Control key rather than the Option key, so it booted to on-line recovery mode. When it asked me if I wanted to restore Lion I decided, "Sure. Why not? Since the restore from Time Machine doesn't work." That took about six hours.
Then I went to the App store and downloaded Mountain Lion. Another six hours and that is done.
Now I can't access the backups on Time Machine. They appear to be there. It shows backups to Feb 2011, which is when I installed Time Machine on an external drive. But I can only access databacked up from my new drive and Admin account.
Last night Browse Other Drives for Time Machine at least showed the old backups. After shutting down overnight only the new backups show.
I've run verify and repair on the external and it's okay.
Please tell me I can get that data back. There's over a decade of stuff there going back two other Macs. Photos, important documents, all my writing are there. I really need it back and I can't understand why I can't get back.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi all... I had a very similar issue.  I had a hard drive replaced by Apple on my iMac due to a total hard drive failure.  I attempted to restore my last time machine back up through my time capsule but I get some type of sparse bundle package error.  It appears that something is coming back from the back up as I only have about 180GB remaining space out of 1TB.  Any advice?  It appears that Apple had re-installed the latest version of Lion back to my hard drive.  I'm completely distraught here as like Romantic Heretic, I have over a decade of information currently lost.
Any help with step by step directions would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks

  • How do I convert a Time Capsule former Time Machine into an external drive?

I want to convert my 2TB Time Capsule (which I formerly used as a Time Machine) into an external drive.  I now have a 3TB which I have set up as the Time Machine thus freeing the 2TB to hopefully work as an external drive.  The 2TB now sits with the old Time Machine backup data intact but I no longer need that backup.  I had it hooked up to my modem but not have hooked the ethernet up to my desktop (is that right?).  Please advise how to prep the 2TB Time Capsule to be a normal external drive.

    1) How do I turn the wireless on the TC on or off? Where do I go to change the settings.
Spend some time in the airport utility.. the easiest way is simply go through every screen until you are familiar with the controls.
Open airport utility.. click the TC.. click edit.
Click the wireless tab. Click on Network mode.. select Off..
    2) I found the Touro 4TB and the price is quite inexpensive compared to other 3 and 4TB units. What's the reason for that? Am I missing something in the specs? They offer a Touro Deskpro and a Touro DX3. I can't tell from the description what the difference is - I can't see beyond 4TB. Is one preferable over the other?
They are competing with better known brands.. ask anybody hard disk brands they know.. and either Western Digital or Seagate come to mind. People easily forget there was hitachi (ex IBM). Although Hitachi sold their disk division but due to anti-trust laws it could not be sold entirely to WD who bought half of it.. Toshiba bought the other half. WD tries to hide the Hitachi drive name to bury it.. they bought to bury. But Toshiba keeps it alive.
I actually buy Hitachi drives (Toshiba now) in preference to the others. But everyone has their favourite. The Touro are just good value for money.. the case is not exactly the work of art.. buy LaCie for that. It is a bit over large and the plastic is plasticiky, if you get my drift. Silver plated plastic to make it look like metal is not my favourite.. but I am hardly concerned with the look..!! It looks like an external hide drive.. hide it if you find it ugly.
The difference between the Touro Pro and the Touro DX3 4TB drives is the speed of the drives, the pro is 7200rpm and the the DX3 should be 5400rpm.
I am not 100% sure of the above..  but it is likely to be different drives.. We have not seen DX3 in our market until recently.. they were all pro.
None with bigger than 4TB at this point..
    3) OWC - never heard of this group - are the hard drives dependable in your experience?
Retailers who sell Touro and Toshiba and LaCie and every other brand.. sell online and to overseas.. good prices if not the cheapest.. have their own lines of shells, as well selling all the others.. have their own brand SSD but obviously bought in from elsewhere.. RAM, kits for all sorts of things.. huge catalog and very Apple orientated.
I am amazed if you have been on a Mac for more than 5min.. google ads have not flashed up OWC 20 times.. you must have good resistance to advertising.
Please google OWC.. if I post their actual URL the post will get deleted.
Look up say external drives.. they have one zillion of them.
