Time Machine Kills Subversion?

Clearly there is a slight competition, but it was with some surprise I discovered last night that Subversion were broken after a full restore from Time machine.
Now there is a slight margin of error, but really the clone from just a few days before the Time machine date I recovered from had/have it working perfect after I then restored from that. The time between the two occurances, I have only used the computer for like writing in pages and web, I have not been fiddling...!
Neither Xcode nor SVNX could connect to the apache server, I tried to restore all settings from the cloned disk that was working.
I am no expert with Subversion, it seemed though as it wasn't possible to connect via file:/// url either.
If this really is a case of Time machine making anything less than a 100% perfect copy: Then it is not only a far less flexxible solution than keep in one or two updated clones, then it is absolutely useless for system restore!
Are there other stories of problems after system restore with TM?

Hi
My two cents.
Backing up a 'live' mail server is going to be risky at the best of times whatever you use. The contents of the database would be constantly changing. There are threads in the forum discussing this. A better alternative might be mailbfr?
http://osx.topicdesk.com/content/view/41/41/
Or develop another backup strategy? If you decide to use mailbfr try and leave a donation. The site is an excellent resource for Apple's mail server. You often see Alex (Pterobyte) contributing on these forums. He gives of his time freely and is always helpful. By the way I am not affiliated with the site in any way.

  • Time machine kills Wifi network!!

I had recently posted a thread on TC forum "Weird shut down of TC" that my TC just shuts down routinely.
I have a 1TB TC that has been working very well. I bought the new unibody MBP and the Time machine has been backing up quite nicely for past one month.
I now have a problem that the TM aborts with a message the the drive could not be accessed due to network problems.
My Wifi would be down, status light amber, after a while the status light would go off completely but the disk in TC would be spinning as can feel the spin vibrations. This would happen about every 45 minutes and only way to go back up was to unplug and plug.
I now find that the culprit is time machine. This is what I tried sequentially:
    A. Rolled back to 7.3.1 firmware. Same problem.
    B. Switched off the TM from prefrences. It worked well for a day.
    C. Switched on the TM. As soon as TM backup started, I had the TC wifi freeze.
    D. updated to firmware 7.3.2 with TM turned on. Same problem
    E. Turned off the airport card, plugged in ethernet cable so now was not using the wifi but wired connection to the TC. Started the TM and again. SAME PROBLEM.
    F. Turned off TM, all was well for the entire day.
    G. Turned it back on and on the first back up attempt, the WiFi was killed again.
I think now the problem may be with the size of the back up that TM is attempting. It does the 'prepare for back up' pretty quickly but once the back up starts, it kills the WiFi and aborts with a message that there is no network.
Anyone have any idea if I should troubleshoot differently or diagnose this differently?
Has anyone had a problem with TM with large back ups?

    Hi Alexandre,
Thanks for the input. Sorry my profile was not updated. I am using MBPro 10.5.5.
Here is the output from console which I think is the portion till the network went down. Could not find a way to attach the file.
Thanks for any help you can give:

  • Can I use Time Machine for Subversion?

I need a free, simple way to back up files in a programming project so that I can archive older files and roll back to them if needed.
    -I am working by myself.
-I want to manually decide when to back up.
-I expect to submit multiple days worth of backups at the same time to an actual -SVN repository (subversion archive).
-I need to only back up a small number of folders.
-I would prefer my repository to be local, as in on the same hard drive. Externals are a little inconvenient but I could do those too. Online storage is a bad idea.
-I prefer saving only modification differences between files, but full copies of modified files is ok too.
Can Time Machine do what I'm looking for? If not, are there any free, simple ways to make a repository on my local machine?

I would suggest that if you really want a subversion-type app, you actually use subversion, particularly since you want to be able to upload to a larger subversion archive as well. There are several GUI front ends for subversion, some free and some shareware. I haven't used any so I can't make recommendations, but if you search MacUpdate or VersionTracker for "subversion", you'll find them.

  • Time Machine kills WiFi

I just got a 17" 2.66GHz Core i7 8GB MBP (wahoo!). I restored from the Time Machine from my old 1,1 MPB just fine.
When I connect the Time Machine to a USB port, it kills my WiFi connections, but works fine itself. To regain WiFi connection to the world, I must disconnect the Time Machine drive from the USB port.
I've repaired permissions on the new MBP drive. I've repaired disk on the Time Machine disk. I've reset PRAM. I've done a full, new Time Machine backup, in case the first backup was too resource-intensive, but maybe subsequent incrementals might not be so resource-intensive. I've tried each of the 3 USB ports. None of these tricks have had any effect.
What have I missed? What can I do to regain being able to leave my Time Machine drive plugged into a USB port, and let 'er rip, as intended?
(cross-posted in Snow Leopard Time Machine forum, too)

So I've tried your "turn off Time Machine and plug in drive" bit, and it has helped. Should have thought of that myself, thanks for being the voice of reason and of troubleshooting 101.
I left the drive plugged in with Time Machine turned off, for a day or so to be sure I wasn't seeing things, and life was still good, albeit without Time Machine backing stuff up. Even better, I then turned on Time Machine, and let it start backing things up, and WiFi still works after another day or so. Of course, I've now jinxed it by tempting the gods <grin>.
I wonder what it is/was? Some sort of overload due to essentially a first time Time Machine backup? Hard to imagine, given the horsepower of my 8GB, 2.66GHz Core i7 7200PRM MBP, and more so given the relatively low processor and memory utilization and disk I/O in Activity Monitor. Maybe the Dell Tax for switching oh, so long ago?
Oh, well, I'll just keep an eye on it, and hope it continues to Just Work!

  • Time Machine Killed My External Hard Drive

Tried to backup with Time Machine.
Now my external La Cie Hard drive is not recognized.
I don't want to initialize and loose all existing data.
Anyone know if Apple is going to make everything right again?

My LaCie 200GB external Hard Drive was working extremely fine, with Time Machine, etc, over the first couple of days of Leopard. Then suddenly it became unrecognizable, despite frantic attempts with different USB, Firewire cables, different (Leopard/Tiger) MBP/Powerbooks..
After fretting about it for a long while, I decided I was going to wait till Monday to bring it in to the Tech guy at work, praying that he will have a solution to retrieve all those GBs of files (years and years of neatly indexed photographs, notes, dossiers, etc), but when I read about Data Rescue II from Michael Hodge, I downloaded the demo version, and was all set to go into battle, when lo & behold, the LaCie mounted again on the desktop, albeit as WRITE ONLY.
So I deliriously managed to copy all of the essentials onto the MacBook Pro. PHEW!!
Thanks, Michael, for the Data Rescue II tip. Happy Camper here again..

  • Time Machine kills my OS

I'm not sure if it is because Spotlight was running (or hanging, I'm not sure whether it was actually doing anything or not) (and I had turned my TM disc to the Private setting in Spotlight) or what, but twice now running Time Machine has frozen everything. It stopped at about 17 GB the first time (this time I had to literally pull the plug to get the computer to stop it) - after this I double checked and reformatted the partition to make sure it was GUID (or whatever it was). Today I reran it and it failed - no idea why, then after playing with things (making sure Spotlight was not trying to go through the TM drive), it managed to hang at 8.52 GB, and no other program would run. It even would not restart the computer - luckily the power button worked, so I didn't have to pull the plug again.
Ever hear of this bahavior, or have any ideas on how to get the stupid program to work properly?

This appears to be happening to me lately (started yesterday, same date as your post). One after another, programs just start hanging. It doesn't matter whether I'm trying to launch something new or switch to something already running. Soon after I select the program from dock or screen, I get the beachball. Eventually nothing works, cursor freezes, I have to power off. When I restart, I look at the system.log, and the last thing in there before the restart is a message saying a TM backup started. It appears "in progress" on the TM disk. I've tried a disk utility repair on that volume, it ran for a good long while, and the next 3 or 4 TM backups worked, but then it started happening again. I've been using TM for almost a year, no serious problems until yesterday. I've currently turned TM off to make sure it still doesn't happen, but I think it's TM, and it appears to be something that has started happening very recently.
I'd really rather not reformat an lose my current backups, but I guess that will have to be the next thing to try.

  • Time machine killing Windows XP

    Hi,
I have 2 computers. Due to house conditions I just got my wife's PC (Windows XP) hooked up to a Time machine to create a wireless network. (previously a netgear router) I just installed everything and here, a few rooms over, my iMac is working great and is doing its first time machine backup.
However, since installing the Time machine, my wife's computer will not startup. It just reboots over and over. I can start it in "safe" mode, but it just continuously reboots in "safe plus networking" mode. I can't uninstall anything in "safe" mode. Her computer is now essentially useless...help.
    thanks.

just a clarification. since hooking up the TIME CAPSULE (not time machine) as the base for the wireless network, my wife's computer has been rebooting. Sorry.

  • Time Machine Kills Web Sharing

Every time I do a full system restore from a TimeMachine backup the apache webserver from Web Sharing stops working and is sending error messages to the Console every 10 seconds. This looks like a permanent damage to Web Sharing. I've reinstalled MacOS now which seemed to be the only way to get the apache back up and working. I haven't found any workaround but it looks like a problem with the apache logfiles.
Is this a general problem with Web Sharing / Time Machine or is it just my iMac ? Any ideas ?

simply creating the apache2 folder in /private/var/log via terminal seems to fix this!

  • Boot Camp Killed Time Machine?

I'm going to try to offer the short version of this story...
Using Boot Camp I created a Windows partitiion and, using the Boot Camp instructions available from within the Boot Camp assistant, got XP Home installing. About halfway through the install (after it's asked you to configure your time zone and network settings etc.) it locked up. Having no other option, I powered it off. When I turned it back on it went into XP Home however I couldn't do the next step of installing the software off the OSX CD because for some reason it wouldn't read it.
I started the Windows installation again, this time it gave me a BSOD. So, I rebooted, held down the option key, went into OSX, ran Boot Camp and killed the windows partition. I remembered that I had difficulty with this copy of XP Home before and went after my XP Pro CD.
I started the Boot Camp process over again, creating the partition, however this time when the installation got to the section of picking the partition, the Boot Camp partition wasn't there. So I had no choice but to cancel.
Giving up and not wanting to mess with this anymore, I rebooted into OSX and once again deleted the partition. This time I noticed my Time Machine drive was no longer showing up on the desktop and the backups said they were delayed because there was no drive. So I reboot and I'm brought to a black screen saying there's no bootable media. I reboot, hold down option and boot into OSX. Still no Time Machine drive. I reboot again and once again see the "no bootable media" error. I'm stuck in a loop AND my Time Machine drive simply isn't mounting.
Being that I deleted the windows partion and OSX is the only thing that comes up on an option-key reboot - I don't quite get why it's looking for the Windows install disk. I also don't get where my external hard drive has gone. I should mention I have unplugged it and tried to force it to remount with no luck.
I want to run Time Machine and get things back to normal... but I can't because what has caused the mess to begin with has also killed Time Machine. Help??

Ok so I got my external drive to be recognized again by plugging it in via firewire but still no joy on the Boot Camp. I guess I'll just try again and see what happens.

  • Time Machine just killed two external HD

    Hi All,
Time Machine (TM) just killed two external hard disk drives.  I am running 10.8.3 on a MPB 2.3 GHz I7 with 16GB SDRAM and I have had problems with TM not recognizing the external hard disks.  I purchased a new 2TB firewire HD and started TM and about 2 hours into the backup TM error out with an error and the disk no longer is recognized and can't be initialized using the disk utility as it says there are zero bytes available.
I reconnected my MBP to the original MT HD and it proceeded to do the same thing and the HD is no longer recognized and can't be initialized...
Anyone else seen this or have a clue how to fix it?

Open Disk Utility and select the disk device (not the volume name). Then click the Partition tab that appears, and use the drop-down menu to create "1 Partition." Then click the Options button and ensure "GUID" is used, and then select the Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) format and apply the changes.
When finished, set up Time Machine again and see if the problem persists. If so, then the issue is likely with the drive.
If it does happen again, are you able to select the drive in Disk Utility and perform a verification on it? If so, then are you able to see any errors? Do this by selecting the drive itself, as well as any volumes on it.

  • Time Machine is a real killer app!!

Add me to the LONG list of adventurers that have tried every avenue to outwit TM, to no avail. Fortunately, I've got an old PC laptop, and using WD's utility, am able to re-format my "My-Book-Pro"..500 gig. fire wire/USB drive when TM kills it… something I've done at LEAST six times in the past week… but I too am putting an end to the pain, and TM well be given the burial it so richly deserves!!
I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn the TM was written by Micro Soft, as it displays all the trademarks of dysfunctional execution we have come to expect from that venue!
Overall, I wish I had just stuck with TIGER, as it worked well, and was much faster on my G5 iMac… Apple…. we expect more from you!

Very odd... as I have had no trouble with either of my MyBook drives.
I did partition each... as I see no need to use 500GB to backup a 120GB HD.
I set up a partition for a bootable clone, and one for Time MAchine - and well everything rocks!

  • Time Machine running on Leopard killed a partitioned external HD.  Is there a fix?

I partitioned the 3 TB external hard drive into four partitions to use with Leopard's Time Machine.  The partition I was using for Time Machine was 300 GB.  Time Machine required 55 GB for the backup.  When almost finished I received the following error:
    Time Machine Error
Unable to complete backup.  The backup volume may have been ejected or disconnected from your computer.
After receiving the error the drive is not recognized by the computer.
    Please help.

    Hi BDAqua,
Returned the drive & got a new one.  It is working without partitioning.
Best Buy said that Leopard won't support a partitioned external hard drive, the answer is to upgrade to Snow Leopard at a cost of $19.99.  This works for me.
    Thanks for you help!

  • Mavericks killed my Time Machine backups

I have not been able to back up to my external  Time Machine disk since installing Mavericks.
When I click on details, I see a message that says:
Time Machine couldn't complete the back up to "my time machine drive name".
An error occurred while copying the files. The problem
may be temporary. If the problelm persists, use Disk
Utility to repair your backup disk.
I have used Disk Utilities to repair the back up.
I restarted using the command R key combination and used disk utilities to repair both the backup and the system disk until no errors were found on either. But I still haven't been able to use Time Machine to back up.
    Suggestions?

I went into the Console and looked at the logs for the past 2 failures and they seemed to die on the same files. Here's a sample log.
