Time machine /lion issues

Hi guys and girls. I have a latest generation Macbook Pro with Lion installed. I just had my hard disk replaced at the Apple Store, but now as I am rebooting, it does not see my external hard disk with Time Machine, so I can't reimport the data. What should I do? Thank you
Matteo

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t have Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • Time Machine / iCal issues on Lion

    Hi all,
please forgive me, if this has been discussed before. Searching the forums didn't reveal anything, though.
Since upgrading to Lion (10.7.1 as of yesterday, and no improvement) I have two issues bugging me on my MacBook Pro (13", late 2010):
when away from my home net, Time Machine keeps bugging me that it can not find my Time Capsule. This is annoying since this message keeps coming every 5 minutes or so and the window is automatically in the foreground and has the focus. Does anyone know how to tell Time Machine that it is perfectly normal for the Time Capsule to be unavailable when on the road and that there's no reason to get upset about this? When in my home net, Time Machine is happy, although it only backs up, when I hook up the power supply.
iCal which I use extensively and which is synced via MobileMe ends up syncing forever every now and then (have found no correlation for this bug to appear - sometimes twice daily, sometimes only after a few days of usage). I have spent hours both with MobileMe chat support as well as with Apple's telephone support - no improvement. I've followed all sorts of tips on the net as well (deleting accounts, adding them again, etc). Deleting and adding my MobileMe account to iCal usually fixes the situation for a while. Strangely: busycal works like a charm with the same data (I presume). Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Not that I dislike busycal, but I was resonably happy with iCal before lion - so I am a little hesitant to spend money on fixing something that shouldn't be broken in the first place
any help or comment greatly appreciated
    cheers
    Torsten

If you are going to install Mavericks on your existing Mac then you don't need to use Time Machine.  It's good to have a Time Machine backup but when you install Mavericks all of your personal files/documents are left intact and are unaffected.  Only the operating system files and updated applications are modified on your system.
You may want to consider keeping your Lion backup and setting up the Mavericks backup on a new external hard drive.

  • Time Machine: Lion vs. Lion Server... Lion Server breaks existing function?

Hello, I hope someone can point me in the right direction,
I recently upgraded (clean install) all of my machines to Lion.  I decided to "start over" with a new time machine setup where each computer would have its own partition on the external drive.  I hooked this drive up to a mac mini I had and connected all the other machines to it via the LAN and everything went well for a few days... until I tried to be clever.  I decided to try Lion Server on the mini.  After I added Server (which just seems to be a bunch of admin utils) and rebooted, my time machine setup stopped working.  I am now getting the dreaded "the network backup disk does not support the required AFP features" (specifically TM Lock Stealing).  From the client log:
    8/7/11 9:31:28.531 PM com.apple.backupd: Starting standard backup
8/7/11 9:31:28.548 PM com.apple.backupd: Network destination already mounted at: /Volumes/Yggdrasil TM
8/7/11 9:31:43.988 PM com.apple.backupd: Destination /Volumes/Yggdrasil TM does not support TM Lock Stealing
    8/7/11 9:31:54.000 PM com.apple.backupd: Backup failed with error: 45
Also, that volume doesn't appear anymore in the "Select Disk" dialog of the client.  The volume does appear in sharing and I can copy files to/from it via Finder on the client.
Now, I went in to Lion Server and enabled "Time Machine" and set the "backup destination" to the same volume.  That works fine.  I can select that location and backups from my client go with no problem.  That makes me think this is an arcane configuration issue... how can I get Tiger Server (or maybe it's on the client end) to recognize that the exact same disk/partition, just a different Folder is ok to save TIme Machine backups?
In other words... One share: "Yggdrasil TM" is at the root of a partition, which used to work for Time Machine in Lion prior to Server.  Another share, "Backups" is inside "Yggdrasil TM" (/Volumes/Yggdrasil TM/Shared Items/Backups on the mini server). Any ideas?
I did notice that /Volumes/Yggdrasil TM/Shared Items/Backups has a .com.apple.timemachine.supported file in it, but it still didn't work after I "sudo cp -p" that file into where my older sparsebundle was.
I even went so far as to double check permissions and ACLs for both directories as being the same:
    $ ls -ldae /Volumes/Yggdrasil\ TM/ /Volumes/Yggdrasil\ TM/Shared\ Items/Backups/
    drwxrwxrwx+ 10 root  staff  408 Aug  8 00:37 /Volumes/Yggdrasil TM/
    0: group:com.apple.access_backup allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child
    1: user:_spotlight allow list,search,file_inherit,directory_inherit,only_inherit
    drwxrwxrwx+  5 root  staff  170 Aug  8 00:32 /Volumes/Yggdrasil TM/Shared Items/Backups/
    0: group:com.apple.access_backup allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child
    1: user:_spotlight inherited allow list,search,file_inherit,directory_inherit
I also played around with the /usr/sbin/sharing command, but that doesn't seem to have any real settings to do with this.
I guess I'm stumped, any suggestions before I restore the mini from time machine and give up Lion Server as a lost cause?
    Thanks

Hi, it's been a while, but what I think I did was when I enabled the "real" Lion Time Machine Backups location, it created a sharepoint called Backups.plist.  I looked at what was set in there to see if there was anything likely with this command
    sudo defaults read /private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/sharepoints/Backups.plist
and I found this bit, which looked interesting
        timeMachineBackup =     (
            1
so, I figured I'd try it in the other plist files where I really wanted the backups as I was basically stumped.  Luckily for me, it worked.
As for how I figured out where the sharepoint plist files were... I have a long name and I got tired of seeing the mounts show up as "MyFirstName MyLastName's Public Folde" (note truncation) on all my macs, so I went looking for those files some time ago. :-)
    Hope that helps.

  • Wipe new Macbook Pro - Time Machine Backup Issue

    Hi,
I recently purchased a 15" Macbook Pro, i'd previously been using a Mac Pro - through which everything was backed up through Time Machine onto a external HD.
When i started using the Macbook Pro i by-passed the initial Migration request as i had'nt yet got the 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable for my external HD (have one now).
When i tried routing timeline on the MBP to the Time Machine backup on my external HD it ended up creating a separate user account on my MBP. This isn't what i wanted - i thought i could pick up where the Mac Pro left off but have'nt been able to figure out how. It's also slowed the MBP down alot, so i want to wipe it and start afresh - hopefully figuring out the Time Machine issue in the process.
    Thanks,
    brokenboy

    You can by doing this:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
When the system restarts you will be in the Setup Assistant from which you can initiate a migration from a Time Machine backup. In this way you will not end up with multiple user accounts.

  • Time Machine: Lion to Mountain Lion

I just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion this afternoon and now can't access my Time Machine backup drive - it is saying the password is incorrect.
Now it may very well be that I have forgotten the password, but after doing some research I see that Time Machine has been a bit iffy in Mountain Lion for some people.
Is it possible that there may be an issue with accessing the drive because of the upgrade?

Check that caps lock is off. Also check that the keyboard layout is what you think it is. Failing that, immediately start a new backup set on another external drive. Keep the old one around until you're sure you won't remember the password or you'll no longer need the data, then start over.

  • Mail Time Machine Transfer Issues

I recently purchased a new that came with Mountain Lion, but had some issues during the transfer of my data, specifically in mail. I transfered my data by using a Time Machine Backup on an external USB drive. After the transfer I noticed that none of my archived mailboxes came over nor my inbox rules. I am a little concerned since don't have access to my old Mac's drive since it experienced water damage, so all I have to go on is this backup. If it helps, my old Mac was running Lion.

Hi I`ve got the same problem. Mail rules missing after import of Time Machine backup. But I noticed that they are actually contained in the file they`re supposed to be (MessageRules.plist in User/Library/Mail/V2/Maildata).
Any idea how to fix this?
    Thaks a lot.

  • I desperately need to access my User Library folder in Time Machine (Lion so = not visible).

Hi. I installed Lion a few months ago and got a new external drive to back up Time Machine.
Nobody told me the User Library would be made hidden in the new OS. I have been backing up regularly in the belief that all my work, settings and so on was safe.
Yesterday my iMac (27" 2.8 Ghz Core it with 4 gib memory) suddenly went mad. Message saying finder had quit whilst trying to restore windows. Desktop was flashing, no icons clickable, no external disks readable. Could access some progs and terminal, but nothing else. Could not get into the history folder to trash various plists and so on as the folder is hidden and the alt Go wouldn't work. The Finder just wouldn't do anything.
I have sorted it out BUT I have lost my address book entries, my browser booksmarks, my desktop shortcuts and my iCal entries. I need to access my User Library on my Time Machine. Is there a way?
I cannot believe I have been religiously backing up my stuff but Apple has made it so I can't access my backup of one of the most important folders on my Time Machine???
Is there anyway of getting into this from Terminal or something? I will never be able to get back all the bookmarks and stuff I've been researching for years. I have it backed up on two different hard drives, both of which have 'invisible' library folders. I have make the folder visible now, for future backups, but it's after the horse has bolted. I am furious, and just feel like bursting into tears because of all the time it's going to take me to get all my work back. I can't tell you how stupid this was, Apple.
If someone could help I'd be really grateful. I've got older backups but they are so old they won't get back my recent stuff.
    Thanks.

    select Finder
hole option key and select Go in the menu
    Select Library
    Enter Time Machine
You should be seeing all the versions of you Library folder.

  • Time Capsule, Time Machine, Lion, repeater.

Need to upgrade home network for more space, longer range, upgrade to Lion. Have an existing router, Netgear, that does not reach all areas and devices. Would also like to set up a wireless backup for all computers on network. Of course we need to update OS to Lion, (I think). Any help? Can the Time Capsule be used as a repeater? Is it compatable with Time Machine?

The TC cannot act as a repeater except to another apple router. Apple chose to use a proprietary system.
If you can get a cheap express or extreme.. plug it into the main modem.. then the TC can work as repeater.. known as wireless extend in the Apple world.
Or get EOP or homeplug adapters and use those instead of ethernet.. but they are not problem free..

  • Time Capsule, Time Machine & Lion

When I installed Lion, Time Machine would get stuck on backing up (Console would report "waiting for index to be ready over and over).  I erased the the existing Time Machine Back up and started over to see if that Fixed the problem.  While it does back up now, it indexes everytime, is this normal.  This takes a lot of time almost to the point where it is time to back up again.  Console still reports waiting for index to be ready.  I copied what console shows.  It is backing up to a Time Capsule via wifi.  Please help

    No.
You might want try deleting the index.  See the pink box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • MyBook World Edition - Time Machine - AFP Issue

So after 60 mins on the phone with the ppl at WD, it was determined that i most likely have any issue with Time Machine accessing the wd_backup partition of my mybookworld NAS drive. Simply put - I can access the drive via SMB ('cept for the backup partition - which is what i want anyway) but TM (nor the finder) wont access the backup partition at all.
WD says its an AFP issue. Ive spent all day searching google and forums and I cant find a good answer. Can anyone help?
    Thanks

Sorry I'm not adding anything positive but I too am having problems with my MBW NAS drive. Every time I try to connect with the "Public" drive, I get the "The operation cannot be completed because the original file for "Public" cannot be found." I connect through SMB as well but it is annoying. I never been able to connect to MBW-Backup. Again, sorry to piggyback but just wanted to let you know you are not alone in your search.

  • Calendar from Time Machine Lion backup to Mountain Lion

    Hello,
I copied the Time Machine backup from my crashed Lion iMac to my Mountain Lion Mac Mini, folder ~/Library/Calendars.
The calendar data is not correct converted from Lion to Mountain Lion: ex. appointment from 31-jan-2013 18:30 upto 19:30 is changed to 31-jan-2013 18:30 upto 01-feb-2013 19:30.
How can I correctly convert the calendar database from my Lion backup to Mountain Lion ?
    Thanks,
    Hubert

Here are the steps I would use.. do not connect by ethernet at all whilst you do them.
    Factory reset the TC.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Redo the setup with different names. Short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. eg TCgen5 as base station name. TCwifi for wireless name.
Make sure the password for disk and wireless etc.. are 8-20 characters pure alphanumeric mix of case and numbers.
Reset TM then to the new drive location.
See A4 pondini for a full reset.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Strongly recommend you also verify the backup and install the Widget.. A5 and A1. The log you get from the widget is a big help to see what is going wrong.
Ensure the ipv6 is set to link-local only in wireless.
I would do the whole lot but you can test at each step if you want.. I just had it happen to me.. first time in 12months and regular posting in this area. Doing the above got me going again.. although it takes a bit of patience to work through the lot.

  • TIme Machine verification issue (Drobo and Airport Extreme)

Hello. I recently purchased a Drobo (1st gen, off ebay) to replace a 1TB WD MyBook I was using as a Time Machine backup and Media Server.
The Drobo is connected to an Airport Extreme base station over USB 2.0. My Mac is connected by ethernet to the Airport Extreme.
I followed the instructions on the Drobo website to create a separate 500 gb partition for Time Machine and the rest to accommodate my media collection. http://support.datarobotics.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/67/related/1/session/L2F 2LzEvc2lkLzdta1VHNmZr
The Time Machine backup seems to go OK, taking several hours to backup 160gb of data. Later on in the day, I'll get a message that says:
"Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you."
I've tried redoing the backup 4 or 5 times now. I've tried repairing permissions and the repairing the disk on both the Mac and the Drobo. I've learned that Time Machine Backups to Airdisks aren't officially supported by Apple (Although I never had a problem with my previous hard drive attached to the Airport Extreme, and Drobo say it's fine on their website - "Time Machine with a Drobo device connected to an AirPort Extreme or network attached (NAS) works. Just make sure you have updated Time Capsule or Airport Extreme to firmware 7.3.1 or later."
Every time, after a couple of hours, I get the verification warning and have to delete the backup and start again. I wouldn't mind just going and buying another 500gb external drive to just attach to my Mac, only I now have a separate 500gb volume sitting on my Drobo that I can't do anything with and I can't delete because I don't have anywhere else to transfer the data from my Drobo while I reformat it!
I'm running out of ideas and would love it if someone can offer some advice. Thanks guys!

Hi. Thanks for the response and sorry for the double post in the Airport forum. I'm really just not sure if this is a Time Machine, Airport or Drobo issue.
Everything is updated to the latest versions and I've been looking at the Drobo support site, but all I see is that Drobo is 'supposed' to work with Time Machine over Airport Extreme. However, I've tried everything I can think of and scoured forums over the weekend to try and get to the bottom of this. It's just bizarre that a cheap WD hard disk used to work, and a much more expensive Drobo doesn't.
I've posted the same message to the forums over at the Drobo site, so we'll see what comes of it. I'm not that hopeful. This mysterious black box on my desk seems to have a mind of its own. Even now, even though I'm not reading or writing any data to it, I can hear the Drobo accessing data on the disks and moving things around. I'm not surprised if it's a bit too much for Time Machine to handle. I'm just a bit annoyed that I followed all of the advice from Data Robotics to the letter and it doesn't work, even though it should.
I think I'll just give up and buy a firewire drive (I'm out of USB ports). I'm sure I'll find something I can move onto this redundant 500gb partition. Thanks for your help.

  • Time Machine Design Issues

Am new to Mavericks and something odd seems to be happening using Time Machine. First, it never let me specific which volume I wanted to be backed up... it simply decided ALL my mounted volumes should be backed up! I DID stumble on the Advanced settings where I could indicate NOT to back up various other mounted volumes, but this seems like totally backward design... so is this REALLY how it was designed or did I miss something?
.Once I got my other volumes excluded, I proceeded to do the f)irst backup (no third party anything installed yet, so it was just the OS). I kept freaking out because Time Machine (in it's menu and the Settings pane) kept telling me it as backing up almost 800Gs instead of the 11 or so I wanted it to. Kept visiting the Advanced panel where it DID say a full backup was ~11Gs. Fortunately, when it hit that it did stop, so it honored what I wanted.
So is this a known issue with TM? Again, I am flabbergasted that in its 10th full iteration, an issue like this even exists! Or, again, am I missing something...

so is this REALLY how it was designed or did I miss something?
    That is how it works.
So is this a known issue with TM?
    Not that I'm aware of.
What happens if you try to make a new backup? Same thing?

  • Time Machine - Yosemite Issues

    I keep getting a message - "backup failed - There isn't enough space ..."
In the past, TM would automatically delete the oldest backup. But I can't seem to make that happen w/ Yosemite.
Anyone else experiencing this issue ?

    For me:
Time Machine is still broken.  When I "Enter Time Machine" all of my monitors go black (iMac) and the computer will not recover.  A hard reset is needed.  Any ideas?
I have no easy access to backups via TM (can get there with finder but not TM)

  • Restore from time machine (Lion)

Just installed Lion, which crashes on startup every time. So naturally I went to restore with time machine by attempting to boot using snow leopard install disc. However every time I tried to boot into CD by holding C at startup it just boots into lion which crashes. So I tried safe boot which worked and tried to boot snow leopard install disc but it says "you can't use this version of the application install mac os x with this version of mac os x" " you have install mac os  23.1." (no typos there which made me laugh). What's the point of me backing up my system if Lion won't let me restore from a crash? How are you meant to restore when the install cd doesn't boot because of Lion and your os crashes on startup? Well done apple you have made an important part of your software redundant.

I haven't made a backup yet.  I was running Snow Leopard and I just installed Lion.  I have to go back to Snow Leopard.....I don't want to use the Recovery HD because that is all Lion now.
A complete disk wipe is necessary to remove the Recovery HD partition.
Back to Snow Leopard from Lion install method
Read and print out these instructions, your computer is going to be offline and you wil be cutoff from help until your machine is restored.
Clear the Desktop, Downloads and Trash of anything you wish to keep by placing their files in the respective Documents, Music, Pictures, Movie folders.
If you have a TimeMachine drive, update it and disconnect for the duration of this restore time. It will be your second backup system and will have to be wiped and setup again after successfully going back to Snow Leopard if it was connected to the OS X 10.7 boot drive. If it wasn't, then leave it disconnected without updating to Lion. (note: I'm not a TimeMachine user, so I don't know how to restore 10.6 from this medium)
Backup ALL your Users folders (Documents, Pictures, Movies, Music etc) manually (drag and drop methods) to a (not TimeMachine) external powered drive (HFS+ journaled formatted in Disk Utility) and disconnect, your going to be wiping the entire disk of ALL DATA. (warning, everything will be gone and not recovered, OS, programs, files, Windows etc all gone.)
    Here we go!
Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk that comes with your computer and second screen in just STOP.
Look at the Utilities Menu for Disk Utility.
On the left is the name of your hard drive maker, click it and Erase (format HFS+ Journaled), give it the same name as before, and click Erase...
This should wipe the drive of ALL partitions (GUID, OS X and 10.7 Recovery, Windows if present)
When it's done, quit and install OS X 10.6. Then install all your programs from fresh sources and validate/update.
When you setup a first account, use the same user name as before, this way you can simply drag and drop the content of your previous Users folders from the external drive right back into the new Users folders and everything should work peachy. Links in iTunes to music, playlists and iPhoto links especially.
Update OS X to 10.6.8 using the Combo Update for best results.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
(Note: If your original machine had 10.5 and you want the free iLife that comes with the disks with the computer, then you'll have to install 10.5 first using the same c boot/erase/format methods as above, then update to 10.6 via the disk, then Combo Update 10.6.8)
Final step optional but highly receommended.
A lot of people use a Carbon Copy Clone of their boot drive to a HFS+Journaled external drive as a "hold the option key" bootable backup in case something goes wrong with their boot drive or need to restore to a previous OS X version..  (in addition to TimeMachine drive for more immediate backups.)
It's not advised to have a Bootable Clone and a TimeMachine partition on the same external drive, as two drives gives hardware protection in case one fails.
