Time Machine Locked out of Backup Disk after Install of 7.6.3 Airport Utility

Yesterday the system advised that Software update was available for Airport Utility. I updated (7.6.3) since I was having trouble getting AirPlay to work. Following the update the system wanted to update the firmware on the Time Capsule and also the Airport Base Stations. I did this as well. Now the new Airport Utility can't find my Airport Base Stations with any reliability. Also, Time Machine can not run because the Backup Disk on the Time Capsule is "in use". The Airport Base Stations are working just fine even though the utility doesn't always see them. I am most concerned with the backup situation.
Do I need to undo this faulty software/firmware upgrade to resolve this? If so, how?
I would appreciate some guidance on this very much.
Thanks in advance.
Cyclone
PS the iMac is at 10.8.2. Can't seem to be able to change it on the profile.

First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.
Try again to back up.

  • Time machine does not recognize backup disk after Yosemite

I have this issue in both macs I own, a 2010 MBP, and a 2012 Mac mini. After I upgraded to yosemite, Time Machine will not find my backup disk. I have been using the same network attached storage drive for 4 years for time machine backups. I has worked fine with all the macs I've owned until now. I can see the disk in Finder, I can go to disk utility and mount the Time Machine disk, but when I go to Time Machine preferences and try to select the list, the disk is not listed there, even though is mounted.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want. I know Time Machine accepted the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

  • Time Machine cannot mount remote backup disk (ReadyNAS NV+)

    Hello,
I own a ReadyNAS NV+ which I use as an external backup. It has a "Time Machine" backup daemon, so the iMac see's it over network. I used it for a couple of months without issues.
A couple of days ago I had to change the physical location of ReadyNAS. Now there are 2 switches between my iMac and the readyNAS.
Since I changed the physical position of the ReadyNAS I try to backup using time machine but it's not possible. Time machine hangs up when trying to up at "Making Backup Disk Available". Using the terminal I can clearly see that AFP has issues mounting the disk:

Finally Time Machine exists with error "Backup disk cannot be accessed. error 109".
Can someone give me a hint or two on how to solve this issue?
    regards

Not a NAS-specific issue.  The OS is trying to read a block of the sparse disk image, and the read is failing.  Basically, the sparse bundle is damaged.  You'll need to rename it and then try backing up again to a clean sparse bundle.
That said, make sure you're running a version of the ReadyNAS firmware that actually supports Time Machine.  There are several AFP commands that were added for Time Machine that *must* be supported for correct operation, and older AFP implementations did not implement them.  The reconnect errors suggest to me that maybe the firmware you are running doesn't support the Reconnect UAM, in which case it probably also doesn't support the replay cache, etc.  If that's the case, then things probably won't work correctly without a firmware update even after you fix the corrupted sparse bundle.
Edit: actually, on further searching, it might be a NAS-specific issue.  Certain buggy network switches do not properly support jumbo frames in mixed networks, which can cause read errors similar to what you are seeing when working with AFP.  (This might have been your post on the other board.)  In the Network prefs pane, choose Ethernet, click "Advanced", click the Ethernet tab, change Configure to Manually, and set the MTU to Standard (1500).

  • Time Machine can't find external drive after installing Lion

Time Machine can't find external drive after installing Lion. I have a Laice 1 terabyte external drive that worked fine with Snow Leopard and now no show ... tried connecting it to front port and Mac Pro can't see it. Also lost Office,Quicken, and Final Cut Pro  says: " You can't open application because Power PC apps are no longer supported" this is Not a good surprise!

Does the drive work when just directly connected? If so, have you prepped the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • WD Smartware and time machine error -1 accessing backup disk

I saw a lot of postings in here but didn't see this solution addressed, so I'm documenting it for others.
After I upgraded to Lion, time machine on my MBP stopped working.  It gave me an error message window that
Time Machine could not complete the backup
The backup disk image could not be accessed (error -1).
I was getting this message, but my buddy who has the same MBP model, was not having any backup problems.
After calling apple support, it turned out that I had two issues.  First, Lion is incompatible with WD Smartware, which I had installed on my MBP (but my buddy did not).  You can't even have WD Smartware sitting in your trash bin.  I used the WD uninstaller to remove the software and then emptied the trash bin.
Second, a new firmware update was available for my Time Capsule.  It was apparently released in the last week or month.  I guess I had not run Airport Utility since installing Lion and missed the new version.  After installing the firmware update, Time Machine was able to backup my MBP.  The support rep said this firmware update also included fixes that may address the intermittent wireless problems we have been having with our TC router since upgrading to Lion.

Spent the whole day speaking to AppleCare on getting this solved.
Migration did not work on the DNS or Doman and the Priviledges were lost.
Look a lot of repair, but backup and running.

  • Time Machine reports identity of backup disk has changed

Hello! A few weeks ago I purchased a new 15" Retina MacBook Pro and a new 2TB Time Capsule. Every day or two I get an error informing me that the identity of my backup disk has changed. I finally got sick of this so I turned off Time Machine, deleted the preferences file, wiped the Time Capsule drive, and restored the Time Capsule settings to factory, and started fresh. However, I'm still seeing this error.
Some minor details: The Time Capsule is named "AirPort Time Capsule," as is the volume on it. I initially had a second hard drive at my office configured as a second Time Machine target, but after I started fresh with Time Machine, I didn't set up the second target, and am seeing the same message. I am also using Encrypted Backups.
Any suggestions would be great, I'm not sure if this is a bug in Mavericks, a bug with my Time Capsule, or something indicative of a hardware issue either at my MBP or my Time Capsule.

    Cody DH wrote:

Any one of those is possible, and you have taken reasonable steps to resolve it. I suggest deleting the following file, which will reset Time Machine. Turn off Time Machine first, and make sure a backup is not in progress.
Triple click to select the entire line, then control-click and select Services > Reveal in Finder. Drag the selected file to the Desktop, or directly to the Trash:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
This will not delete your existing backups.
Turn on Time Machine and reselect your backup volume. The effect of deleting that file will cause erroneous values to be shown in the "backing up xxx of yyy" messages until the subsequent backup.
If this does not resolve the problem contact AppleCare because you should not be having these difficulties.

  • Time Machine very slow when backup disk almost full

My Time Machine backups on a Time Capsule (first generation, 1 TB) have become extremely slow recently. The disk is almost full, but I don't think that should be a problem as Time Machine deletes the oldest backups by itself. It has been, so I don't think that in itself should cause a problem.
This becomes particularly annoying because whenever backups are going on, the system doesn't allow me to access the "Open" or "Save" dialogues - probably because it wants to check the Time Machine disk, but can't, or only can very slowly. Whenever I do this, the app in question just freezes.
Anyone else has this problem, and does anyone know a fix? I don't want to start a new backup if I can avoid it.

    Florian M. wrote:
Thank you. Did that, and it seems to be working now - though it actually seemed to have got better even before I ran Disk Utility. Before, even rebooting didn't help.
Yes, if there's a problem inside he sparse bundle, rebooting (the Mac and/or TC) won't help.
Time Machine is a great technology, but it seems to have strange quirks sometimes
    It does indeed!
    Once again, thank you.
You're quite welcome, and thanks for the star!

  • Time Machine stuck at "Looking for backup disk" after installing Windows 8 via Boot Camp

I've been backing up via Time Machine to an external USB drive and it's been working fine. I recenty installed Windows 8 via Boot Camp and now TM gets stuck forever at "Looking for backup disk...".
I've tried the following, to no avail:
Using "Select Disk" in TM preferences to re-select the disk
    Deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
    Running system maintenance via Onyx
    Resetting PRAM
Formatting the drive and setting it up for TM backups again
The Boot Camp partition is on the same drive as OS X (on a 180GB Intel 330 series SSD). During the Windows installation I re-formatted the partition as NTFS.
If I start OS X in Safe Boot mode, TM backups work. In Safe Boot mode, the NTFS partition isn't loaded so I suspect it has something to do with this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I installed Paragon NTFS for Mac and it started working all of a sudden.

  • Time machine locked out - how do unlock it?

I seem to have gotten into a situation where my control of Time Machine has been locked out.
Is there a way to manage this setting via a terminal command?

I ran an experiment.  I forced TM to execute a backup with the ON/OFF switch in the Off position.  My conclusion is that affects only the automatic backups.  (it still should operate)
Do the 'Select disk..." and the 'Options...' work?
I'm grasping at straws, but Update you OS to 10.6.8.. Lets see if that is the cure?
    Ciao.

  • Time Machine & More than one backup disk

Hi, I was told a while back by an Apple Engineer that I could use say two drives for my Time Machine backups. The reason being that if my main computer fails then I would at that moment have no backup, just the one Time Machine disk so all my eggs would be in that basket. I don't like the odds so wanted to find out if there was another option, a better option. He told me:
I can have one disk that I use one week, I called this the Blue Disk and the next week
Choose the second disk, I called this one the Orange Disk and he said that each alternate backup would be independent of each other.
My question is, is this true and okay to do because I've only last week been told by another Apple engineer that this was definitely not the case and that I would have no complete backup and therefore if the worst happened and my computer failed I wouldn't even have one working Time Machine Backup!! I would be stuffed.
I really don't wan't to mess around with third party backup applications because I've come unstuck in the past before doing exactly this. I hoped that Time Machine was the answer to all my prayers.
I cannot have just one backup of my computer because the work is too critical to risk loosing and also with only one Time Machine backup that means that every time I backup all my work is in one place and connected. This is very bad because 18 months ago we had a powercut whilst Time Machine was backing up and both the computer and the Time Machine backup were destroyed. No way of getting back the files at all. I always keep the second backup in a secure place off site.

    Bill Soan wrote:
Sorry went on a bit there Question was:
Can I use more than one external disk for Time Machine to backup onto alternately (One one week, the other then next week). and still have two complete independent backups of my computer.
Yup. Each will be complete and independent. The first backup after the switch will be longer than usual, as Time Machine catches up with all the changes made since the last backup +*to that disk.+*
You must tell Time Machine each time you swap disks, though, via Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk.
A better solution, however, might be to use one drive permanently with Time Machine, and the other with a different app. See #27 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for some suggestions.
