Time Machine locking up on initial backup

I'm running TM on a G5 XServe, backing up networked student folders. It was working at the beginning of the year, however it has been giving me trouble lately. TM is backing up to a 1TB iSCSI networked SAN unit. Over Xmas, the SAN lost two hard drives and crashed. This is when the trouble started.
We rebuilt the SAN unit and I got another 1TB iSCSI drive configured for TM. Three times I've tried to get it running and it'll always crash on the second backup (one hour after the initial backup).
This last time the initial backup was pretty big (462GB I think) and it crashed on the second backup an hour later. But there shouldn't have been any new data as that second backup was at 12:13 a.m. (nobody around).
Any ideas as to why TM wants to crash?
Thanks

Okay... TimeMachineBuddy's last entry was ". . . node requires deep traversal:/" it lists a reason, but I can't get a copy/paste of it.
Click in the message area (that will outline it in blue), press Cmd+A to select all, then Cmd+C to copy everything to your clipboard; then paste it here.
This message was last after three UUID's don't match for all three internal drives (but that supposed to be normal for a first backup).
Correct. So is the "deep traversal" message. Since TM isn't sure what's on the disks with the UUID problems, it has to do the deep traversal, comparing every directory (folder) on your system with it's backups. That is, of course, a lengthy procedure, and the message is not an error message -- it's just to let you know the Preparing phase will be a long one. See #7 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for details.

  • Time Machine Stalls While Performing Initial Backup

I have a 2008 macbook pro 13" with a 320GB internal HD which includes a Bootcamp partition.  I have been trying without success to do a Time Machine backup on this entire drive.  The Time Machine setup includes a backup of all files with the exception of the Bootcamp partition which is grayed out on the Time Machine setup dialog.  My backup device is a portable usb 1TB drive.  The initial backup keeps stalling after an hour of two with 20GB to 50GB of 243GB backed up when it quits.  Time Machine says "backup failed."  The console logs for the past several failures are below.  Does anyone know what is wrong here?

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
That last line is the problem AFAICS; you are trying to backup a file or folder that you do not own. "UUIDs don't match..."
I suggest starting by running DU repair on all HDs and repairing permissions.
You might also see if you can exclude some suspicious folders or do a binary folder exclusion: ie:
Exclude half your folders. It you can backup, add half the remaining folders, etc.
If you cannot backup the first batch, exclude half of that first half until you eventually arrive at the errant folder. Then you can diagnose the cause.
Usually, however, repairing permissions fixes these kinds of errors.

  • Time Machine stuck halfway through initial backup

I've been having trouble getting Time Machine to complete its initial backup. After having tried many of the suggestions offered throughout various posts here and elsewhere, I'm really at a loss. My setup:
    * G5 Quad running 10.5.3
    * 250GB internal drive (Boot volume)
    * 750GB internal drive, split into 2 partitions, one of which I've designated as my Time Machine drive
    * Drobo connected via USB with 2 500GB drives in it.
Every time I try to get my initial backup going, I get 107.41GB (of 157.37GB) into it, then TM just hangs. For hours. Even days. No errors, no response, no forward motion. I can't stop it unless I kill the backupd process via the command line.
I've tried the following suggestions to get it working which I've found elsewhere:
    1) Repartitioning and zeroing out the 750GB drive, formatting it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    2) Deleting and rebuilding the spotlight index on all Volumes
    3) Excluding numerous folders from TM, including Applications, Caches, my Aperture library, Desktop and trashes.
    4) Repairing the permissions on my boot volume.
    5) Trashing the TM preferences and starting again.
    6) Trashing the incomplete backup and trying that again.
I always end up with the same thing, hanging at that point. As an aside, is there any simple way to figure out what file it's trying to copy here?
For the record, here's what's in my console log from my most recent attempt:
Jun 9 10:05:35 Mothership /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[272]: Told to rescan.
Jun 9 10:06:42 Mothership /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[272]: Backup requested by user

Jun 9 10:08:36 Mothership /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[272]: No pre-backup thinning needed: 188.84 GB requested (including padding), 447.14 GB available
Any ideas you may have are much appreciated.

  • Time Machine doesn't acknowledge initial backup

I purchased a Time Capsule and quickly and happily built a new 802.11n home wireless network with it. Yay. Then I hooked up my iMac to the Time Capsule via ethernet to do my initial Time Machine backup, knowing that it would take a LONG time (~400GB). Well, it took about 3 days to complete (which seems suspiciously slow...), but anyway, it finished sometime in the middle of the night. In the morning I looked at the Time Capsule and sure enough, there was the big-*** "sparse bundle" backup. Time Machine seemed to be in the middle of doing a relatively small backup, about 140MB, which I figured were the changes since I began the initial backup a few days before. However, I wished to unplug the ethernet and let it continue wirelessly, so I did so. However, Time Machine seemed to just hang there with the backup no longer progressing. Since I could simply have it redo the backup a little later without any real data loss, I just stopped the backup mid-progress. I unplugged the ethernet cable and the world seemed well. Then I clicked in Time Machine to begin a new backup.
Of course, I expected this backup to be a rather small one, but I realized that Time Machine was about to begin another ~400GB backup! In fact, there was no information in the "Last Backup" field, so apparently Time Machine could not see the massive initial backup and was about to start all over again. Well, I am NOT about to wait another 3 days for it to do that, especially if the problem reoccurs, so I halted the backup and set Time Machine to "off."
Now, what to do? Why can't Time Machine see the initial backup? Why is it trying to do another full backup (very little data changed on my system in the 3 days)? Did my stopping the "hourly" backup somehow "break" things?
    Advice? Thoughts?

I'm not sure how the sparsebundle is identified by the computer, but if it is uniquely identified by the network connection used (ethernet, airport, firewire networking, etc.) then it could very well not identify the previous sparsebundle you made via Ethernet as being the one for your computer via Airport. I dont remember this being the case for me when I had my PowerBook backing up to my PowerMac via both Airport and/or Firewire networking, but I could be wrong...it was a while ago. Even though you seem to want to lean away from this, I'd recommend remaking it and just letting it go. You can use your computer in the mean time and allow the process to run in the background. It will pause and resume as the backup disk is available until the process is complete.

  • Time Machine will not complete initial backup

I reformatted my external LaCie USB 2.0 drive 2X now (even zeroing once and set partition map to GUID) and TM gets hung on the initial backup. I'm on my third try now, and it gets hung each time at exactly 62.3G. mdworker keeps running 98% CPU power also. This seems strange, because I have the backup drive selected in Spotlight's Privacy window not to index the drive, but it seems it keeps trying. Anyone have a clue to what's going on? I'm ready to go back to SuperDuper for backups.

Having EXACTLY the same problem with one macbook.. nothing special in any way about this one at all.. the 10.5 was a clean install and all updates are installed (10.5.2), no special characters, no disk errors, no permission errors, no volume errors, no fsck errors.. removed and rebuilt indexes, tried several different FW drives, reformatted FW drives, tried a USB drive, tried everything I could think of..
    no deal.
I get an error on copying a single file right before the error 11.. but these are different random files and those specific files appear OK otherwise. (ive tried this about 30 times now)
I also (sometimes) get an kernel I/O error on the disk1s2 (the fw drive) but there is nothing wrong with it.. and since i've tried three different ones.. and I am able to run a bu from another machine to these drives.
come on apple engineers... give us an answer !

  • Time machine will not perform initial backup

    Hey,
time machine is not performing my initial backup, this is the error it gives
    http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/6425/screenshot20100419at522.png
The error shows up anywhere from the first few megs to the first few gigs during the backup (and the backup is incredablly slow, I don't know why...(not like the apple videos where it goes 0.5gigs/s))
It is the second partition on a 1TB USB drive.
I tried several formats (pretty much everything in disk utilities).
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks

Shoot, my partition scheme is MBR and not GUID or Apple....
Is there anyway to fix this without wiping the entire harddrive (I don't have enough storage in everything that I have to store stuff to backup this entire harddrive (at least 10 years worth of stuff))
It's risky. iPartition, and perhaps some other 3rd-party apps, claims to be able to change formats and/or the partition map without erasing, but they very prominently recommend backing the drive up first. And it costs about half what a new HD will.
If the things in the other partition aren't backed-up some other way, your best bet might be to get a larger internal HD, so you can keep all your originals on it, and reformat the external and let TM start over.
Or, get a second drive, and let it back up both your internal HD and the current external.

  • Time machine locks up when browsing backups.

I have just started using time machine. It did a full back up 3 days ago and is ow doing hourly backups. My problem is browsing the backups, the TM window opens full screen and the time line on the right animates, I can click on a date which then comes to the front but if I click on anything, TM locks upand wont respond, None of the buttons work,no spinning 'wait' icon and the only way out is to force quit. I did see another thread suggesting that virus barrier could be the problem, but I uninstalled virus barrier some time ago after the trial subscription ran out.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks

I've tried repairing permissions on both externals drives and Disk Utility always says nothing needs to be repaired.
You can't repair permissions on a non-OSX volume. It sounds like something on one of them, probably the iTunes drive, is corrupted. +*Repair Disk+* instead.
When I try to stop the backup, it won't stop and I'm forced to shutdown my mac using the power button because nothing else seems to work
See #D6 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). If it's locking up that badly, have the Activity Monitor window visible and ready before starting a backup.
I'm a bit nervous that my 500 GB drive is failing.
    Quite possible.
All of my media is there and I'm concerned I'll lose it all. Could it be anything else though?
Sure. If +*Repair Disk+* says it "appears to be ok," and the problem persists, exclude it from backups temporarily, per #10 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If the problem stops, you know it's something to do with that drive.
If not, Verify your internal HD and, while you're at it, Repair the Time Machine drive, too.
If it does appear to be the iTunes drive, check all the connections; try different port(s) and cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact in another).
Also check the power connections, if the drive has it's own power supply. And be sure it's plugged-in to a known good outlet: better, a good-quality surge protector; best, the same U.P.S. system that your iMac is on.

  • Time machine takes forever on initial backup, progress bar randomly resets

When I first tried to run Time Machine I was sure that it would be simple, as Apple Software generally is. I was warned by another user that the first backup might take a while, so I began the backup on a Friday night (the day my crispy new external 320GB Seagate drive arrived). When I went to bed it was on around 24GB of approx 65GB of data. When I got up the next morning, it had only backed up 27GB!
Another problem I had a couple of times was after the backup had been going for 3-4 hours it would reset itself and start all over again! In other words the progress bar got 50% of the way through and then went back to 0%. This was obviously extremely annoying, and prompted me to stop the process, reformat the backup drive and search for some more answers in the internet.
After a full Saturday of fluffing around, calling my friend who has Time Machine working OK and watching the little blue bar creep along at speeds like 1.5MB/s (according to activity monitor) I finally managed to get it to work!
I've summarised what I did below:
    _Formatting your Time Machine drive_
In the Disk Utility, select the drive and choose “Partition”
    Press the “Options…” button.
Use "Apple Partition Map" partition scheme if the disk will be used with Time Machine and a PowerPC-based Mac.
Use "GUID" partition scheme if the disk will be used with Time Machine and a Intel-based Mac.

    http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/leopard-disk-utility-format-issue-screws-with-t ime-machine-but-theres-an-easy-fix-316573.php
    _Spotlight may interfere_
Turn off indexing for Spotlight on the Time Machine drive
    In the Spotlight control panel
    Click the privacy button
Click the + button and choose your Time Machine backup drive
This will mean that Spotlight will not try to index the drive while the backup is happening.
    _Excluding files_
In the Time Machine Control Panel
    Click Options…
    Do not back up:
Press the + button and choose the system folder
Choose “Excluded all system files “ in the dialogue box that comes up.
See the following link for more info on this step:

Are you running it over wireless or ethernet?
We particularly advise initial backup to be done over ethernet otherwise the job has this tendency not to finish. The fact is wireless has errors.. and error correction doesn't work very well during the initial copying.. TM does a verify of the backup once it finishes.. I think this is the 5sec mark.. and keeps building as it discovers files that don't match. It can also be spotlight indexing.  What it is doing is good.. doing it over wireless is very bad. It has to read both sides.. then compare then decide if there is a corruption to copy the file again.. then compare again.
It can also be a file is actually corrupt on the source disk.
My inclination is to kill it. Even if you have to restart from scratch.. over ethernet it copies at about 60GB an hour.. it should complete overnight with hours to spare.
Do a verify of the source disk before you start. And load in widget to get actual log messages from TM.
    See A1 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Pondini also has some stuff about backups taking far too long.
See D section in reference above.. also how to cancel a TM backup. (other than turn it off).

  • Time Machine Locks up at "Preparing backup..."

Using a 1 TB Time Capsule for Time Machine Backup of my MAcBook Pro (MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), 8GB Ram, 2.2GHz Intel Core i7, 1TB).   Occasionally, it stops backing up properly. In Time Machine Preferences, it finds the disk but seems to get hung up  "Preparing backup..."
In the past when this happened, I rebooted my cable modem and then rebooted my Time Capsule and the next backup started working fine.  That no longer seems to work.  It just keeps "Preparing backup...."
    Any suggestions?

Do a verify of the backup.. it could be stuck with inprogress file from previous failed backup.
    A5 and A10 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  I've tried various suggestions I've seen on the forum but nothing has worked.  TIme Machine worked fine for the last two years and just suddenly started having this problem every time.  The only thing that was a little different is that the computer was off for a week while on vacation and then I added a large amount (20 GB) of photos. Now the requested backup size is 82GB, which is large, and process proceeds very slowly for 2-3 hours before failing with the message mentioned.  I have more than enough available backup storage space for it.  Before failing, Time Machine has backed up no more than 12GB or so of the backup.  It fails during different files each time.
I've turned off the computer sleep feature, and I've checked that the NAS is set to never automatically power down. I normally backup over Wi-Fi, but I've also tried connecting to Ethernet and it still has the same problem.  It's odd because I also have a MacBook Pro that is still backing up fine to the same NAS using the MacBook's Time Machine.
I am using an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS.
I have system logs that I can share if helpful.  The logged messages vary a bit from run to run, but here are some messages that I've been seeing:
I always get this message near the beginning of the backup:
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
I've gotten this messsage a number of times:
    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.

Those indicate that your NAS is not fully compatible with Snow Leopard.

That looks like a problem was found with the file system (data) on the TM disk.  I don't know the details, but OSX tried to recover it from the journal, and found extra data on the drive.    Likely a result of the incompatibility mentioned above.

That's a problem writing to the NAS drive.
But the backup continued after all this.

Something caused a disconnect.  Can't tell from the log what it was.
I doubt it's a problem with something in OSX being damaged or corrupted, but reinstalling OSX isn't a major hassle, so might be worth a try.
To be incompatible with Snow Leopard, this NAS must be at least a couple of years old.  It may be beginning to fail.
Contact the maker.  See if there's an update to make it compatible with Snow Leopard.  If so, that might fix it.
If not, or if that doesn't fix it, see if they have any diagnostics that will shed any light.

  • I just updated to Mountain Lion and now time machine won't recognize my backups from before the update.

I updated from Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.2 on my MacBook Pro
I used disk utility to restore my external hardrive because I read somewhere that that would fix the problem.
It did fix the problem but only temporarily. I was able to view my backups from Snow Leopard, but as soon as I tried to backup again, time machine was stuck
"preparing to backup" for 5 hours and when I quit the prepare I could no longer access my previous backups.

So what happens if you go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General? Are you able to go there at all? If you are able to go there, can you unlock the preferences using the lock in the lower left and your login name and password?
If you are able to do this, can you change the "Allow applications downloaded from:" to Anywhere?
    Best of luck.

  • Time Machine locked disk

Connected a WD My Book pro to my G5 PM running OS 10.5.1. After a few minutes into the first backup it failed the backup with the message: Time Machine Error - Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory.
Tried deleting the "in-progress" file, but the disk is locked and will not unlock. Cannot unmount, repair or erase with DU, and cannot unlock.
Tried disconnecting and reconnecting power to the backup disk, now the computer hangs trying to connect to the backup disk.
    Appreciate any suggestions

Try shutting down and resetting the PRAM.

See if you can now unlock the disk. If you can, reformat the drive using the directions in this article. People with PPC Macs should substitute Apple Partition Map for GUID when following the directions.

  • External hard drive not recognized after time machine locked up

I was backing up to an external hard drive (300GB Western Digital) and time machine locked up. I had to shut down the computer and restart. Now the external hard drive does not show up on the desktop?
I can see it in disk utility but I am not able to mount or unmount the disk, I keep getting an error that the disk is in use. I tried to erase/reformat the disk and no luck.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for the help

Do I need to boot from the install DVD?
this is often the easiest and eliminates any "busy drive" problems. what's wrong with booting from the install DVD? takes a couple of minutes.
My main hard drive is OK... the drive that I am having problems with is an external hard drive that I was using to back up my lap top. I just want to get the external drive reformatted, but disk utility will not erase it. I get an error that disk utility shut down, "please check the drive and make sure that the drive is not in use or programs are still running"
Is their a way to do a hard or forced reformatting of an external hard drive, I don't care about the information on the drive
I also tried disk warrior to recover the info on the disk and all it does is crash my mac pro????
    Thanks again for the help

  • I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Mac

I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.
    regards  - Alan
