Time Machine log query plus advice on SystemUIServer logs

Recently I repartitioned my USB 500 GB drive used with Time Machine after unsatisfactory performance post installation of Yosemite 10.10. Disk Utility verifies the drive as OK.
I noticed the first entry in the Time Machine widget after every start up is:
Property list invalid for format: 200 (property lists cannot contain NULL)
Property list invalid for format: 200 (property lists cannot contain NULL)
usually as above but at times just the one line.
A successful backup has followed anywhere between 7 and 33 mins later.
On checking the Console after entering “backupd” in the Filter field and selecting “system.log” from the log list I can see the earliest entry is:
Oct 24 00:53:27 com.apple.backupd-helper[44]: Attempt to use XPC with a MachService that has HideUntilCheckIn set. This will result in unpredictable behavior: com.apple.backupd.status.xpc
Followed by:
Oct 24 00:53:57 com.apple.backupd [2925]: Starting automatic backup
Oct 24 00:53:58  com.apple.backupd [2925]: Backing up to /dev/disk1s2: /Volumes/My Passport/Backups.backupdb

Oct 24 00:56:20  SystemUIServer [863]: Attempt to use XPC with a MachService that has HideUntilCheckIn set. This will result in unpredictable behavior: com.apple.backupd.status.xpc
Logs confirm I performed a successful manual backup - Oct 24 01:29:37
Since then manual and automatic backups have been running seemingly successfully, removing expired backups or not, I presume accurately as required.
Time Machine is certainly backing up although the interface is not always as smooth as prior Yosemite.
On searching for the message indicating unpredictable behaviour I discovered this thread:

  • Does Time Machine make back-ups when nobody is logged on?

    Hello,
Does Time Machine make back-ups when nobody is logged on and does it continue to back-up when I log off?
I'm using an directly connected external hard drive to back-up my data with Time Machine, the back-ups are encrypted.
    Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with Time Machine and solved it by enabling "Enable Power Nap" in Energy Saver:
    System Preferences...
    Energy Saver
    Restore Defaults
Check "Enable Power Nap: While sleeping, your Mac can back up using Time Machine and periodically check for new email, calendar, and other iCloud updates."

  • Time machine, seagate backup plus

Hi ive bought a seagat backup plus external hard drive. Ive been using it to transfer files from a pc to my new mac. When i originally used it for the first time, i think it asked me if i was using it between both windows and mac formats so i said yes, and this has worked seamlesly.
Now all my files are on the mac, i want to use it for a time machine back up. Upon trying this it failed because it is not in the correct format i think.
So here is a couple of questions....
1- How do i give it the correct format?
2- Some of my family still use the windows pc, and i would have liked to have still been able to use the hard drive across both formats. So if i format for Time machine, will this not then be possible?
    Thanks.

Sorry, an external that is used only for Time Machine.
see > Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
Because sooner than later, Time Machine will use all the space on the drive.

  • Time machine suddenly not working, advice pls

    Hi,
I have two external HD's, one is mains powered and the other is a smaller and more portable USB powered one..
i used to use time machine on the more portable one, but then i changed to using the mains powered ext HD for time machine backing up, and never had a problem with either.
Now i am away from home and only took the portable one with me, and the first time i tried to back up using time machine with this one it fails always after backing up about 30gigs...it always seems to fail at the same point more or less... and the msg i got is below...
One thing to note, is that before attempting this back up, this portable ext HD did have a lot of content on it (mainly music), which is now not backed up on either of my ext HD's -  i transferred it to my laptop + deleted it from the external HD before making the time machine backup. now i can't even simply copy and paste anything to the empty portable ext HD. I can remember having problems deleting from the portable ext HD and i think, i had a lot of problems specifically removing the backups folder that was on that portable HD from a long time ago, but i did remove it in the end.
So my suspicions are that this is probably the reason it doesnt work now - odd that i can't even put anything onto the portable HD now... I need to return this laptop to apple asap (due to other non-related reasons), so i need to erase its HD before sending and i cant access the bigger ext HD with my backups on,( to make a new back up) before i need to send it, (that's why I wanted to change this portable HD that's with me to be my time machine back up)as i have a recent back up at home I'd happily just put my new things on a storage device you see, as could use the back up again later when needed.
using time machine is essential for me for its simplicity of transferring everything to the new comp, (likely to be a mac mini when ive done enough research)...but as i say - because i have a fairly recent time machine back up at home, if i can simply transfer the latest additions to my laptop to this ext HD, whilst not ideal, will suffice as i don't have much time.
does anyone have any idea why this is failing? I really need to back up to this ext HD as i am a long way from my usual one and won't be able to access it for a while. Was I not able to change back up device more than once? hopefully its just a case that this portable external HD has just stopped working and a solution is to buy a new ext hD where i am here, but that may not work, and I don't want to fork out another £50 if it's unnecessary.
Apologies for the long-winded explanation...+ many many thanks in advance....

**** i spoke too soon....it stopped again around the 30 gbs transferred mark.
how strange....there must be something that's stopping it backing up, some content it doesn't like?
I tried again to also just move the files I dont have backed up anywhere (200gb) , onto the external hd but it doesnt even start the process, and I get this msg
"the finder cant complete the operation because some data in (the folder i want to transfer) cant be read or written. (Error code -36) "
does this mean there's a "backups.backupdb file in there somewhere it doesnt allow me to move? I got it all from the external hd to my computer at one point though...so would seem strange..
    thx
(and its the same, regardless.....whatever file i try to transfer across, be it just an mp3 or a jpeg...i get the same msg and it doesnt let me)

  • Does Time Machine Backup When You are NOT logged in?

I do not normally leave myself logged in since there are multiple people in my family and they have their own accounts.
Does time machine run backups when I am not logged in?
Does it wake the computer from sleep to run a backup every hour? Day?
If TM does not backup when I am NOT logged in, should I leave myself logged in by switching users back to the login screen?
(On a side note:) Is there a way to make it so that when a screen saver activates, and someone hits a key, it goes back to the login screen instead of the desktop?

    No

Yes, in System Preferences->Security check "Require password to wake...."
You can also tick "Log out after x minutes of inactivity" which would require a new login.

  • Time Machine fails to backup home space.

    Summary:
I've been having problems with Time Machine since I enabled it. For some reason it refuses to backup any file in my account (/Users/ritchiem/). I have spoken with the an Apple 'Genius' and they were dumb founded. So I ask here in the hope that someone has had this issue occur and know what the cause is and how to fix it. I'm not really looking for work-arounds, though I will cover that later.
    *Problem Description:*
A new 500GB external drive was erased and formatted HFS+ Journaled.
TimeMachine was then opened and enabled on this drive.
Back Up Now was selected and left to run assuming it would take a while on the 500Gb internal drive that had a around 200Gi-250Gi of used.
    It ran successfully.
When entering TimeMachine, history shows the top level drive and navigating down the Users folder shows only my 'test' user account. My user account 'ritchiem' is not listed.
There was no error presented from Time Machine an the System Preferences panel reported it was successful.
Console.logs shows that backup was performed successfully.
Steps already taken to address issue:
I have verified/repaired permissions on my boot drive, a few files were changed but none in /Users/ritchiem
I have deleted the Time Machine preferences: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
I have tried a second external hard drive, in this case it was more interesting:
It was reported as being to small to perform the backup. So I added some exclusions such as my large iTunes library.
This allowed the Time Machine to proceed but again there was no backup performed of any file in home space.
This is where I thought I must be doing something wrong and went to the Apple Store the genius tried all the usual suspects, permissions, preferences. But no success.
It was only then that one of his colleagues picked up on discussion that it was only my user that was being skipped and suggested the risky move of renaming my user. He showed me the 'Advanced' panel in the Account System Preferences. (I never realised you could use a nice gui to do the renaming of a user in all the right Apple places.)
So I swapped users and renamed my account, and moved my home space to a new user name. mv /Users/ritchiem /Users/martin
I then logged back in to my account to verify the rename all worked and it had.
    _*Time Machine now worked!*_
HOWEVER, that is a total hack. I use the username 'ritchiem' all across my local network and it was not recommended to have a user ritchiem but a home space in /Users/martin.
I renamed my account back to 'ritchiem' and Time Machine again is blocking backups of /Users/ritchiem
Somewhere on my drive there MUST be an exclusion that is preventing the first user that I created on my 2008 MacBook from being backed up. So far my grep-ing of the filesystem for 'ritchiem' has not shown any likely suspects. If anyone here knows where the mystic plist/file is that I need to zap then that would be great.
If of course you have another work-around that does not require me to rename either my account or my home space then that would be great.
Oh and I also tried to trick TimeMachine by creating a symbolic link in /Users to my home space (ln -s /Users/ritchiem /Users/martin). It resolves the link and refuses to backup the contents of my home space just as before.
Please remember here that in all backups that Time Machine performed there was no error, console.log and the UI all report success.
Now if I had a new blank machine and some time I could test out the theory that it is always the first user of a freshly installed machine. However, if other people have it working then it is perhaps not that simple.
    TIA
    Martin

Thank you for all your advice and suggestions. Apologies for the delay I had difficulty locating my original install DVDs.
    Summary
I have performed all the steps and checked items as requested however backups are still not including my home space (/Users/ritchiem)
What I do find interesting is the output of the TimeMachine backup log (at the very end of this VERY long post) which states that 84.8 GB should be backed up but only 24.3 GB is actually backed up.
Would love to know why TM decided 60.5GB of data should not be backed up but not explained in any of the log files and a successful backup reported.
Before I go on to the details of what i've done, I should also mention in case it is important that I have of course been logged in with my user (ritchiem) whilst performing all of these backups. I assume that is normal and that you shouldn't have to log out for TM to actually backup your data. To verify this previously I have logged out user ritchiem and logged in as a test account. The path /Users/ritchiem still failed to backup. I have not tried this recently, however, I would be really surprised if you had to log out of your user account for the data to be backed up.
    Detail
So to answer V.K. first: My drive did indeed have some items that it said I should repair. Hence the search for the install DVDs. I ran the Disk Utility from the Leopard installer and it repaired the drive. The verify now runs green.
As I had just rebooted the machine and it was all fresh I repeated Pondini's previous steps as well.
    * Disabled TM
    * Exited System Preferences
    * Deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
I then also deleted the Backups.backupdb from my external drive so everything was fresh and new. I would have just formatted it (which would have been waaay faster, but I have some copies as backups on there for now.)
I started the TM prefs panel and added a few items to the disabled list to a) speed up the backup but also b) I have a 320g internal drive and only a 250g external. My total disk usage is 288 which won't fit, especially with the breathing space TM likes to have.
Here is the data from console.log from the first two backup runs:

Whilst running TM I also setup dtrace to log every file open: (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071031121823710)
Looking for any files in my home space that it might have opened returned none:
    ramaII:~ ritchiem$ grep "/Users/ritchiem" tm.dtrace |grep "entry backupd" |wc -l
    0
Yet looking for all the files backed up from the /Users directory there were 458!

Dtrace also highlights the files that backupd uses unfortuately the only files it opened before it started its backup were:

    *Next Steps*
I've been thinking about what i could try next and not having many ideas. So I'm really hoping someone here will have a flash of inspiration.
If I find some time at the weekend then I will try renaming my account again and verifying that it does backup under a new name.
Just incase there is something odd about the first user account created, i.e. UID:501 I will make a new 'ritchiem' account (which will have the next UID, UID:504) and see if that gets backed up, I can try this while my current account has been renamed. If that does work then I can copy my files back in to that account and verify it isn't something in my home directory that is upsetting TM. Although I doubt this is the case as it never read any files from home space during the backup process.
Here's hoping there is something in the above logs etc, that give a clue to what might be going wrong.
    Cheers
    Martin

  • Time Machine backups corrupt or external hard drive failure?

My goal today was to upgrade my MacBook Pro's HD, and to restore my system from my latest Time Machine backup which resides on an external hard drive. I installed the new hard drive, formatted it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and selected Restore System From Backup from Utilities. The system restore was five minutes form finishing when I received an error that the system restore could not be completed, and that I should restart my machine and try again. I did as instructed, but once the system restore process began, the screen went gray, and I was told that the Snow Leopard install could not be completed.
Before beginning the process a third time, I ran Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard install disc and attempted to verify and repair the external (Time Machine) hard drive. The Time Machine hard drive could not be verified, nor could it be repaired. I popped in the old hard drive into my MacBook Pro, booted Snow Leopard, and ran Disk Utility, and tried again repairing the Time Machine hard drive. Here is the log of the error I received:
2010-12-29 21:14:30 -0800: Verify and Repair volume “Time Machine”
    2010-12-29 21:14:30 -0800: Starting repair tool:

Do these errors indicate that my Time Machine backups located in the Backups.backupdb are corrupt, or is the external hard drive corrupt and failing?
The Time Machine backups are on a Maxtor OneTouch, and from what I've read, they're prone to an early demise. I've also recently noticed that my Time Machine backups started slowing. For example, I would plug in my external hard drive and if 1.3GB needed to be backed up, it would stall at 300 MB before jumping to 700 MB, stall again, then jump to 900 MB. That could be a sign of a failing hard drive, correct? If the external hard drive is failing, I can purchase a new eternal hard drive then copy the Backups.backupdb to the new hard drive, correct?
However, if Backups.backupdb is corrupt, then from what I understand, I would have to start fresh. I would prefer to not start fresh unless there's no other option, as I would be losing almost three years worth of Time Machine backups.
    Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks!

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party utility such as +Disk Warrior+ can fix that. It's about $100, and there's no guarantee, but it's probably a good investment for the future.

The structure of the file system is damaged.
That may have been caused by the disk beginning to fail, but there's no way to tell for sure until you erase and reformat the disk and try to use it.

It could, but it could also be whatever's wrong with the file structure.

No. You can't copy corrupted backups. They're all linked together, like a database, so if anything's damaged, the whole set is suspect, and can't be copied.
There are a couple of options:
If the disk is physically ok, and the directory damage was recent, you might be able to restore from an earlier backup. But since you noticed problems some time ago, the damage may not be recent.
Or, you might be able to get up and running by just installing OSX from your SL Install disk (and the 10.6.5 "combo" update). You'll be missing whatever wasn't restored in that last 5 minutes or so. Things are restored in the same order they're listed by the Finder, so it will be the last things in the last user account. You should be able to figure out where it stopped, check or delete the very last file (likely incomplete) and selectively restore as many of the remaining things as you can, via the "Star Wars" display.
Just to make things more difficult, if the disk is failing, the more you use it, the more likely it is to get worse or fail completely.
So your safest bet may be to install OSX, then download and install the 10.6.5 "combo" update. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards. Then recover what you can.

  • Time Machine Stalls While Performing Initial Backup

I have a 2008 macbook pro 13" with a 320GB internal HD which includes a Bootcamp partition.  I have been trying without success to do a Time Machine backup on this entire drive.  The Time Machine setup includes a backup of all files with the exception of the Bootcamp partition which is grayed out on the Time Machine setup dialog.  My backup device is a portable usb 1TB drive.  The initial backup keeps stalling after an hour of two with 20GB to 50GB of 243GB backed up when it quits.  Time Machine says "backup failed."  The console logs for the past several failures are below.  Does anyone know what is wrong here?

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
That last line is the problem AFAICS; you are trying to backup a file or folder that you do not own. "UUIDs don't match..."
I suggest starting by running DU repair on all HDs and repairing permissions.
You might also see if you can exclude some suspicious folders or do a binary folder exclusion: ie:
Exclude half your folders. It you can backup, add half the remaining folders, etc.
If you cannot backup the first batch, exclude half of that first half until you eventually arrive at the errant folder. Then you can diagnose the cause.
Usually, however, repairing permissions fixes these kinds of errors.

  • Help! Time Machine Restore Problem From Leopard Server

    Hi All,
I just did something dumb with my iMac running 10.6.4 and need to restore all data from my time machine backup.
I have a mac mini running Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 which has a time machine volume on an external USB drive.
I have reinstalled 10.6.4 on the iMac and tried running Migration Assistant to transfer information from a Time Machine backup. I am able to log in to the Time Machine volume successfully but I immediately get an error:
    "The Connection Failed"
I have also tried booting into and restoring from the Snow Leopard DVD and get the same results.
I am reluctant to attempt to configure Time Machine for fear that it'll somehow overwrite the backup I have. I do not want to mess with the permissions on the TM backup in order to clone the backup in advance of configuring TM before I get some advice.
Please help! Lost a lot of sleep last night and my wife is very upset.
Below are some console log errors that indicate something is wrong, but google does not turn up anything concrete on the keywords:

I do have an extra external drive that I can copy this file to, by assigning permissions, but am not sure about how TM hides and secures the files needed. I'm worried about messing up the only copy I have of this data.
Don't change anything in the backups. Ever.
Your best bet may be to do a full system restore of the desired backup from the server to the USB drive; then you should be able to boot the iMac from that.
But if you want to copy the backups, you'll have to be logged-on to the server with an account that has permission to copy the sparse bundle.
If you copy just the desired backup, instead of the whole sparse bundle, it won't be recognized as a Time Machine backup, but might work with either +Setup Assistant+ or +Migration Assistant.+

  • Using Time Machine with My Book World on a second computer

I've just installed a 2TB My Book World on my wireless network and am able to use Time Machine to backup my Macbook Pro, using the log-on WD_Backup but I don't know how to backup my wife's Powerbook, as this seems to be the only log-on name accepted by the My Book World when using Time Machine.
Should I enter the same log-on details in Time Machine on her computer and will this create separate backups for each computer (as I'm worried that the same user name might mean it will overwrite my backup)
Any help or advice most appreciated, as if this is the case, I assume that Time Machine backups will just have to be set at different times for each computer on our network
Many thanks in advance to anyone who takes the trouble to respond
    Kind Regards
    Bernard

You need to use the same log-in/password details with all computers and Time Machine will sort it out (or at least it has with my MyBook World). Apparently it helps to give the MBW a static IP address, which you do by logging into the browser interface and changing the option from DCHP to Static. Otherwise I've read that Time Machine can struggle if the IP address of the MBW changes.
There are instructions here on how to set it up:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11110771
And then there are some more details here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11110771
especially the bits about the different potential user names/passwords to try if you keep getting an error message when setting up Time Machine.
I had trouble setting it up, but once I'd got it working (to date) Time Machine has worked like a dream, so I wouldn't believe all the criticisms you might find, as I think that so long as your MBW has the latest firmware, Western Digital seem to have got their act together to make it Mac friendly.
You can also check if you need a firmware update via the browser interface - you just need to put the address of the MBW into your browser and I'm sure there must be other ways of finding it, but personally I log into my router via my browser (eg. http://192.168.0.1 for Netgear routers) and click on "attached devices" to find out the allocated IP (192.168.0.??). Once you put this into your browser you will be offered the set-up process for the MBW.
Hope this helps. From my point of view I can only advise you to persevere, as once you get it sorted with Time Machine, it's definitely worth it
    Kind Regards

  • Can't view my iPhoto libary in Time Machine backup

So here is the issue; I often view my pictures of iPhoto by going directly into the iPhoto Library: Finder --> Pictures --> iPod Photo Cache --> iPhoto Library --> then right click on this "iPhoto Library" --> Show Package Content... and I can view all my photoes/events the way I uploaded them from my camera.
So far everything is good. However, when I'm going into my External Hard Drive which I'm using as my Time Machine (Seagate Backup Plus FOR MAC) and trying to locate the same folder there I can NOT find it. The only folders I can locate under my latest backup (and every backup since I started using this external device) are:
    - AlbumData2.xml
    - iPhoto.ipspot
    - Metadata Backup --> BackupStatus.impeta
    - Metadata Backup (original) --> BackupStatus.impeta
All of the files are extremly small (like few KB) compare to my 280GB iPhoto Library.
Can anyone help me find my complete "iPhoto Library" on my external backup drive.
    Thanks!

    You are welcome.
My concern now, is that if I just simply move the iPhoto Library by dragging it to the main Picture folder I will loose the link between the source (which are the photoes in the iPhoto Library) and the pictures I'm looking at when opening the iPhoto application.
Moving the library between folders will not break the connection between the thumbnails and the original image files, as long as you drag the library as an entity - the whole package and not folders inside. So dragging the iPhoto library one level up, outside the "iPod Photo Cache" folder, the links shoud stay intact.
Have you checked your Time Machine preferences, if you excluded your iPhoto Library from backup?
if you press the "Options" button in the "System Preferences > Time Machine" panel, it will show a list of items, that are excluded from backup.

  • Use Time Machine on ONLY one specific folder?

I wish to use the Time Machine function to backup only one specific folder on my computer, the DROPBOX folder.
How can I implement this and inform Time Machine of my choice?
According to my first investigations, I only have the choice to select folders to EXCLUDE. This makes the setup of Time Machine unconfortable.
    Any advice?

    I agree with Jeffrey Jones2 above .
Makes no sense to backup the dropbox folder alone, Dropbox It is "cloud storage" and has its own backup. Dropbox keeps a snapshot every time you save a file. You can preview and restore.
If you go to the DROPBOX website you can view deleted file from the trash can icon (see below.)
From there it is a matter of Restore the file. This would work for accidentally deleted files,  there maybe a 30day archive limit so read the small print for details.
If it is imperative to your backup plan,  just drag and drop  your folder to any external storage device, just not the Time Machine HD/partition.

  • Can I back up to Time Machine from hard drive of failed Macbook?

My Macbook has just completely failed (I think an issue with power supply).
I had a bulging battery and have a new Macbook Pro on the way, but as I live in a very remote area this is taking a while. So, one day, my Macbook just wouldn't start again.
I hadn't backed up to Time Machine for about a week and would really like to get all the missing data. When the new computer arrives I'm planning to use Migration Assistant to migrate all my data from Time Machine.
So, my question is, is it possible to back up to Time Machine from the hard drive of my dead Macbook? I was thinking either cloning it somehow, or making a disk image and booting it from another Macbook, but this is stretching the limits of my limited IT skills. I don't want to interfere with the other Macbook I'm using or inadvertently wipe the data on the hard drive or Time Machine disk.
    Any advice much appreciated!
My Macbook ran Snow Leopard and was up to date with software updates as of two days ago. It was purchased about two years ago, but I think it's manufacture date was about March 2008.

    Thanks Noondaywitch and Pondini!
The HD of the failed Macbook turned out to be fine. Just to be safe I did a full functional back-up of my Time Machine disk to another external disk as well as cloning my Macbook hard drive using Carbon Cloner to another partition of the external disk.
I then booted from a friend's Macbook and did an incremental Time Machine backup from the original Macbook HD to the original TM backup (making sure I excluded the host computer's hard drive from the backup!); when I did the backup it asked whether I wanted to "Reuse backup" I clicked yes.
As said, the hard drive was fine, but at setup I needed an ethernet or firewire connection, which I didn't have on the enclosure, so I migrated my data to the new Macbook Pro using the original TM backup. Strangely, the backup said it was transferring only 120GB, whereas the HD had 150GB of used space. Redundant files, etc. perhaps? Anyway, it's just transferring now, so will sit back and read the paper and see what it looks like in an hour and a half!
    Thanks very much again!
Now, if anyone's got any suggestions to fix my old Macbook, which I was going to give away to impecunious friends if they bought a new battery……
HD is fine, power seems buggered, the rest, I don't know. Suggestions welcomed (I live 300+kms from the nearest service centre, so it's strictly DIY or go to local computer shop who know nothing about Macs).

  • Restore from Time machine on new 13" Macbook Pro 2.8 i7 after replacing with OWC SSD

I have new 13" Macbook pro with Apple 256SSD. I am replacing with OWC 480GB 6GB SSD because out of space. When I bought machine I used time machine to restore from backup of other macbook pro. I simply held a key on keyboard at startup (dont remember key?) and it appeard to boot from the cloud to a screen where i selected time machine. Will it work the same this time or because I am replacing hard drive i have to create the USB  key thing to restore from time machine? ie does apple have the restore from cloud capability only from their own drives?

You should consider restoring or migrating first only data that you absolutely need and want on the SSD. Then restore selectively.
On the latter, and in general on the topic Time Machine, here is good advice.
