Time machine lost back ups after Mavericks "upgrade"

I upgraded to mavericks yesterday after doing a time machine back up. Installation went well but this morning my imac had to back up 500GB and when that was done all of my old back ups are gone. When I enter time machine it just has 3 hours of back ups! Can anyone offer a solution as to how to get my back ups...obviously time machine is out!
Thanks
Peter

I had this too. I figured out that in my case the problem was that I had updated to the new iMovie library. It was only after I had done this that I found out that iMovie 2013 creates a new package folder with all of the existing movie events in it. As I had just under 500gb of movies I had suddenly got an "extra" 500gb.
The result was that there was not enough space on the Time Machine drive to accommodate the new back up size - so it ditched the older backups. And in fact ditched everything but the most recent backup. I thne made some changes and ended up in a loop with insufficient space for new backups.
I don't know if this is the problem which afflcited you but thought I should mention it.

Why is Time machine backup not working after Mavericks upgrade?

I had the same problem due to the Fire Wire port.  Apple tested it told me it is OK!, I tried a new cable, and have tested both ports on my back up device.  I find it strange that as soon as I installed Mavericks.  The drive does work using USB.  It could be a coincidence, I don't absolutely know at this point, my back up drive ports could stop working, but I doubt it!

  • Time machine not backing up after Mavericks installation

Just upgraded to Mavericks and now Time Machine seems really buggy. I can manually get it to "back up now" but its not doing automatic backups anymore. I also get the "preparing backup" message which lasts for a long time, maybe because its not backing up every hour? I use a LaCie external drive for my time machine backups. I have tried several restarts of the Mac as well as the external drive. Also added my time machine drive to the Privacy section of Spotlight. I did have to power down the external drive during Mavericks install due to it hanging up after waiting several hours. I have found that when my computer becomes unresponsive occassionally , the external drive seems to be hung with the light blinking on it. I have had incidents that I had to shut off the external drive, reboot and restart the drive. That would be the only thing that would "unfreeze" my computer.

It sounds like the backup drive is failing. You should start a new backup immediately on another drive.

  • Time machine won't work after mavericks upgrade

Is there a way to fix it?  Time machine is stuck saying it's preparing for backup.

Others here wouldnt recommend it, but on a new OS install, since I have a giant pile of HD, ...i just grab another HD and create a new fresh Time Machine backup
after its complete, I take the original HD with the OLD backup and format/erase it.
Im a tad too lazy to wait, as you yourself mentioned,  1 hour for TM just to PREPARE to backup. Nope, no,...not gonna do it.
I updated 4 Macs to Mavericks and id rather make a wholly NEW Time Machine backup on another HD and erase the original.
Since I keep about 12+ redundant archives of my important data, I have no worry on earth of ever losing data.
Time machine is a backup, NOT an archive for vital data.

  • Time Machine Won't Work after Maverick Upgrade

    Hi,
I updated my operating system to Maverick the other day.
Today I tried to restore a file from Time Machine, but when I "Enter Time Machine" none of the functions seems to work.
I tried to press pretty much every date, and every button, but nothing works.
Any suggestions on what to do short of restoring to the old ios?
    Thanks.

  • Time Machine lost all backups after Lion upgrade

After Lion upgrade TM asked me to perform a 13 hours backup; I've agreed but now the oldest backup is 3 days ago. What is happened?
    Please can somebody help me?
    Thanks

I can't help here, but before I upgraded my old G5 (OS 10.5.8) TM popped up a message saying that old files had just been deleted. That was what TM does when its HD is getting full. But this was strange because I knew that I had lots of TM space, and since the last use of the conputer (about 2 hours before) I certainly had not saved to the internal HD several GB of files. To my astonishment, all but the last 4 weeks of files had been deleted, back to Jan 2010! GetInfo said that the space left was about the same as before the incident, whereas it should have shown a huge amount of free space.
I deleted all the remaining backup files and started again. It shook my confidence in TM's ability ot provide a reliable backup system. Now I regard it as a useful source of recovering old versions of files (eg., text, images etc.), rather than as a means to restore the system hard drive. Fortunately, I have been using Carbon Copy Cloner for years to make bootable backups of the whole system HD which can then be used, by simply cloning back to the system HD, to get back to work using the state of the HD when I last cloned. Alternately, the clone on the backup disc can be simply examined in the Finder to recover individual files.

  • Does Time Machine make back-ups when nobody is logged on?

    Hello,
Does Time Machine make back-ups when nobody is logged on and does it continue to back-up when I log off?
I'm using an directly connected external hard drive to back-up my data with Time Machine, the back-ups are encrypted.
    Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with Time Machine and solved it by enabling "Enable Power Nap" in Energy Saver:
    System Preferences...
    Energy Saver
    Restore Defaults
Check "Enable Power Nap: While sleeping, your Mac can back up using Time Machine and periodically check for new email, calendar, and other iCloud updates."

  • Am I able to use both Carbonite and Time Machine as back-ups for my iMac?

    HI,
I have a iMac, and I have recently recently completed the initial back up for Carbonite. I also have a 2TB Seagate external hard drive that I would like to use with Time Machine. I am wondering if I am able to use both Carbonite and Time Machine simultaneously.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
As bdmarsha says, yes, you can run both simultaneously.
But one caution; there are some reports here that some of the online backup apps keep some fairly large, frequently-changing files on your system. Time Machine will back them up along with everything else, which can take some extra time and space on your TM drive.
After your initial TM backup, see how large the incremental backups are (by watching the progress bar and info on the +Time Machine Preferences+ window). If those seem too large for the changes you've made since the previous backup, see #A2 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a couple of apps that will show exactly what was backed-up.
If you find such things, you can exclude them from TM backups, per #10 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Time machine not backing up with mavericks

purchased the new 3TB airport time capsule and cannot get the time machine to back up my data.  for 3 weeks, have stopped and restarted TM, now it is still working on "first backup" that started Oct 30th.  this is my 2nd device, first one died after one week, apple store exchanged it. never had any problems on my older TM, but for space issues.
    running on 27" imac has a 1TB disc, 16GB ram, i7 processor

Mavericks changed animation for Time Machine. There is nothing to worry about there.

  • HT201250 Access Time Machine daily back-ups from 1 month ago?

Time machine saves daily back-up for one month, then weekly back-up for all time before 1 month ago.
Is there a way to find daily back-ups from more than a month ago?
That is, I seek to access all daily back-ups for a file from 2.5 months ago, rather than just weekly back-ups, so that I can access the past daily interval changes and recover daily deletions for this file.
    Thanks for any help.

No, sorry.  When they're deleted, they're deleted.
After that long, the space has almost certainly been re-used, so even an expensive, elaborate Data Recovery process or service won't turn up anything useful.

  • Time Machine stopped backing up in Mavericks

Since updating to Mavericks on December 02 my 2 TB Time Machine via WiFi has refused to back up.
It can sit there all day 'Preparing backup... '
Of course I back up also to a USB 1TB disk but  why not my Time Machine?
I have checked Disk Utility and it can be seen there with 1.4 TB available.
    Disk is verified as 1.8TB
Disk name (Data) pop up in Finder and I can see previous sparsebudle file.
In other words, I am connected.
This is not really an issue I can take to my local Apple Store 350 miles away so I am hoping for some advice here.
    Thanks for any help.

Standard Mavericks.. for reasons known only to Apple they decided AFP was no longer good enough and moved the default networking protocol to SMB2... flawed SMB2 into the bargain.
    So I suggest the following.
    1. Do a proper job of it and start with a factory reset of the TC. I am guessing it is a gen4.. tell me if Gen5 or other.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. Redo the setup with proper SMB names.. this helps everyone. SMB names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. not like apple names.. long, spaces and illegal characters.
Use SMB names for everything.. TC name, wireless name/s and hard disk which should be data by default.
    3. Reset Time Machine. See A4 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Change the disk to the new name of the TC.
Now test and see if it works.. The above is often enough.
    4. No luck, force a change to AFP protocol.
In Finder dismount the TC if you have it mounted.
Using the top menu area, Go, Connect to server.
Type AFP://TCname (now it is nice and short and no illegal characters it will work great) But you can use AFP://10.0.1.1 or whatever is the IP of the TC.. that is default.. if you use IP it has to be static.
The computer will request the password.. by default type public or whatever name you changed it to.
    Now try again with TM.

  • Time machine stop back up after standby

    Hi,
I'm experiencing a problem when time machine tries to perform a backup after coming back from standby. I've been using the same external usb HDD Touro Hitachi 2TB (but only 500 Gb used for a time machine separate partition) since I installed Mavericks almost a year ago and all the backups have been performed without any problem even aftre the Macwakes up after standby. I don't remember very well when this problem started, but probably no more than a couple of months ago. Did anyone experienced a problem like this after installing an OS/X patch?
Please find attached the error popup. Your help on this will be very appreciated.
    Vincenzo

After a successful backup in safe mode, I got a failing backup after iMac woke up from stand by. The "Failed to write attrs for" messages are repeated thousands times (I posted just few of them). The time machine hdd was the only external device connected.

  • Time Machine does not work after Lion Upgrade

    Hi all.
I upgraded my iMac to Lion yesterday. I used to run Time Machine through my airport extreme to an external hdd.
After the upgrade to Lion I'm unable to do this. When I try to setup Time Machine again, it is not possible to connect to the HDD throught the Airport Extreme. I do find the external HDD in Finder, but not able to access it.
The HDD is a Samsung 1 TB.
Is this a known issue and is it any possible fixes in the near future?
    Thanks!

    Hi
It probably doesn't help you directly but I have Lion performing time machine backups onto an external disk via airport extreme.  Have you upgraded the firmware on the airport extreme recently?
    Cheers
    Tom

  • Time Machine prepares back ups of 10GB and more with very little activity on my computer

I have an early 2008 iMac with a Samsung 750GBHD, and I am using a Time Machine since 4 years ago working pretty well.
As of beginning 2014 it started to show many errors but at the end of the day there were 1 or 2 back ups done. During this August I realized that back ups were of a size of 10Gb and more nearly every day while the activity of the computer was very light, internet and mail. I cut an anti virus that was working on the background with no success. There is no virus activity, the comp is clean.
What could be the reason for this abnormal activity?

Only way to find out is to analyse what is actually causing the large backups.
Have you installed the widget yet??
    A1 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Or you can get a software app that tells you what TM is doing since it is hardly forthcoming.
    See A2
For why backups are over large.. generally.. see D4
