Time Machine/mac problems

I've just had my mac repaired at the apple store and a new Hard drive put in. I have a Time Machine backup of all my stuff, which I want to reload, but when I tried to put it on it didnt seem to restore it. Also, when I go into the backups in normal finder, I am not able to access some of the files. This maybe because my user account of the backup was password-protected, but how do i access this and restore my files?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
How did you do that? To restore your entire system, see #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If you did something else, that will start over and restore everything.
Also, when I go into the backups in normal finder, I am not able to access some of the files.
That's correct, and using the Finder on your backups is a no-no. They're in a special complex structure, and Time Machine puts special "deny everybody everything" permissions on them to keep us mere mortals from messing with and corrupting them. Copying from them is not recommended. Among other things, you'll likely have permissions problems with them.

  • How to save SOME time machine Mac backups from the TM disk to other disk WITHOUT formatting the destination disk?

    Hi,
How to save SOME time machine Mac backups from the TM disk to other disk WITHOUT formatting the destination disk?
I have a Time Machine disk (A) including the backups of several different Macs (B, C, D & E) generated with an old Mac OS X 10.5.8 (iMac PowerPC) over the years.
I have transferred the old Mac contents to a new Mac with OS X 10.8.3 using Migration Assitant. All OK.
Now, I want to erase such TM disk A to use if for other purposes, but first, I would like to RECOVER the backups of some Macs inside it (D and E). Is that possible WITHOUT formatting the destination disk and selecting only some Macs from the TM disk and not the fulll TM disk? How?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I do not think that is messy, anway. I simply used the same external disk as Time Machine disk for different Macs. And that worked OK all the time for years.
The ExternalTimeMachineDisk contains the folder Backups.backupdb
which contains the following folders (each one corresponding to the Time Machine backup made from each Mac):
    Mac1
    Mac2
    MacBook1
    MacBook2
In relation to my message above, is it possible to select specific files, folders or full Mac backups from such Time Machine disk and save them to other disk? How?
    Thanks.

  • Time Machine backup problems with firewire 800 since Mavericks

Since I installed Mavericks about a week ago, I have had problems with TM not working with my LaCie external drive. At best, it would not back up when the mac was awakened from sleep mode and in use.  When I would open time machine preferences, I would see the "preparing for back up" prompt that would last forever. Not only was it doing that, I have found that it would freeze my mac. I figured this out when I was not able to get my mac to respond from the login screen. It was basically frozen and couldn't log on.  I noticed the back up drive light flickering but nothing would happen even with waiting a long time. I finally figured out that shutting off the TM EHD would unfreeze the mac and it would start functioning normal again. This was happening with my external HD daisy chained to another external drive that contains my iPhoto, iMovie and Itunes files. That drive was also connected to the mac using firewire 800. I tried many different configurations, switched the order the drives were daisy chained, tried different cables and even directly connected the TM drive with firewire 800 to the mac, but the problems still persisted. The strange thing is that when I connect the TM drive through USB, it works flawlesly and no hanging up of the computer. Thats what Ive been forced to do. I have my other EHD connected directly through firewire 800 and it works fine. I only have one firewire 800 port, and since it works fine with my other LaCie drive, it makes me think its not the port or macs hardware? I can only guess this is a Time Machine issue or something wrong with my TM drive?  I have been in contact with LaCie and given them all these details but I have not heard back yet on what they feel the problem is. I thought I would post this to see if anyone else had some experience with this problem.

Forgot to mention I did that. Completely erased and reformatted HD and then reconnected to TM. Didn't help. I did have the mac hang up while installing Mavericks and had to eventually shut off the external drive. It did that to me the firs time I tried to install Mavericks and I lost all my data because it did a clean install after that. I had another back up on CCC so I just restored from there. This time the update to Mavericks transferred my data. I have had TM hang up my mac in the past on occasion, but I was always able to shut down the drive and then the mac would return to normal. Perhaps I should try to erase and reformat again?

  • Time machine - 2 problems I can't solve

Time Machine problems... I have them. And I have given up after spending hours googling, reading, trying and getting nowhere. I really hope there is some experts out there who have the time and energy to help me out. So, here goes. Crossing my fingers!
    Problem 1:
After putting a new hard drive in my old Macbook Pro, I did the first Time Machine backup a few days ago. Everything was fine until today, when I opened the Star Wars Display. I only have _one_ backup of my old hard drive along with about ten of my new hard drive. I have been using Time Machine for backing up to an external drive for over a year, so - where are all my old backups?
When I access the sparsebundle on my backup drive through Disk Utility, I get to Backups.backupdb > MyDriveName > about ten backup folders. The oldest being the same as I can see in the Star Wars Display.
I have checked the box in the Time Machine preferences which prompts Time Machine to tell me if older backups are being deleted. I have not gotten such a notification. So where are my old backups? Are they gone? If so, why? What did I do wrong? Why did Time Machine not warn me?
    Problem 2:
I have an old backup on the same drive as mentioned above. It is not in the form of a sparsebundle but as a folder named Backups.backupdb. It has three years worth of backups. I have not been able to access them since I formatted my old hard drive a year ago and gave it a new name in the process. Since then, the backups have been placed in the above mentioned sparsebundle.
I am able to open the backup in the Star Wars Display by choosing this backup as an alternative drive holding down the option key when clicking on the Time Machine logo in the menu bar. But all directories are just empty shortcut folders - exactly as if I just open the folders in the backup folders in the Backups.backupdb folder. I hope that makes sense.
Is there any explanation for this? How can I access the folders, since they are not working in the Star Wars Display? Are the files gone?
Also, after I open the sparsebundle (from problem 1), it appears in Finder as a drive. Thus, I can access the sparsebundle as a regular folder. What will happen, if I move the Backups.backupdb folder to the sparsebundle? Can I try or will that just screw everyting up?
    Bonus info:
In regards to space, my backup drive has 2 TB capacity. The sparsebundle has a size of 435 GB and the Backups.backupdb folder has a size of 53 GB. But when I check the info on the drive, only 58 GB of space is left. How does that make sense in any way?
English is not my native language, so I apologize for the ramble - it is hard enough to describe technical problems without writing in a foreign language.
If anybody chooses to answer me, know that I am not familiar with Terminal, but I can follow precise instructions
    Thank you!

The backup drive is not directly connected, I backup via the network. As mentioned, I have two files/folders at the root of the hard drive: A sparsebundle and a Backups.backupdb folder. These are two different backups - the sparsebundle being the newest. I suspect that Backups.backupdb folder stems back to when I started to backup and I did connect the backup drive directly to the computer. Even though I later began to backup wirelessly, the backups continued to be saved in the folder. And then - as I tried to explain in the original post - I did a formatting of my Maca year ago, renaming and it and thus began a new backup which was being saved as a sparsebundle instead of as a Backups.backupdb folder.
I appreciate your response, however it is not solving any of my two problems - I do need my backups

  • Time Machine search problem

    hi guys
i am facing a problem in time machine
suppose i backup a folder in time machine called 'x' and it has file name ' abcd.xyz '
when i go inside time machine and search for 'abcd.xyz' for today & when i press back button it disappear although if i go in documents/x/ i find the same file lying there.
pls help me with this problem..

    macexpert wrote:
I have noticed this problems since the (non-fresh) install of Snow Leopard 10.6.
Problem 1: Search. If I go to eg. Yesterday 9.00, and I know there was a file there yesterday and try to search "On my Mac" for that file, no result pops up. If I go to the folder the file was in, and search only in that folder, it appears. But it appears only for Yesterday 9.00. Yesterday 10.00 it's not displaying, although it's there. Also the navigation (Problem 2) doesn't work in search result.
You might want to get Spotlight to re-index your TM drive. Via +System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy,+ exclude your TM drive for a few moments, then remove the exclusion. That should cause a complete re-indexing (which may, of course, take a while).
Problem 2: Navigation. If I enter time machine while in some folder, the current state of the folder is displayed in time machine. If I press on the 'back' arrow (lower right on the screen), instead of taking me to the screen with the last change, it just takes me to the last backup available. In Leopard it reacted different (taking me to the next screen that is different from the current one).
I rarely use the search function there, but don't recall it ever working that way in Leopard.

  • New Time Machine/Mavarick Problem

Trying to do initial back-up of new iMac to 1st Generation Time Capsule.  The TC has worked perfectly in backing up my old iMac running Lion.  Used  Set-up Assistrant to migrte files from old to new iMac,and everything came over nicely.  All apps had been up-dated prior to migration and Disk Utility was used to be sure all permissions were correct and verifications perfect on the source (old) hard drve.  I erased the Time Capsule using Airport Utility (which had also been fully updated).  I used Time Machine on the new iMac to connect to the Time Capsule and let the initial back-up commence.   The source hard drive contained 427 GB.  The back-up seemed to proceed normally until about 405 GB of the 427 GB had been copied to the TC.  At this point, as the number of GB copied increased, the total number of GB listed to be on the source drive also began to increase (whereas before it had held steady at 427 GB for the preceding several hours).  This continued for about 15 minutes, with both the # GB copied and the # of GB on the source drive increasing.  When the number of GB copied reached about 425GB (and the total said to be on the source drive reading ~460GB), the time remaining said zero minutes, and, shortly after that, the machine crashed, with an error message saying that the back-up had failed.
I went through five separate attempts with results similar to those described above.  On three of the attempts, I erased the TC with Quick Erase and, with two attempts, I did a more thorough erase (all zeroes added).  I tried hooking the iMac to the TC via ethernet cable and wirelessly, with the same result.
The iMac is running the i7 processor, has 32 GB of RAM and a 3TB hard drive.  Just routine applications on the source drive.
Has anybody else experienced a problem similar to mine?  Any clues as to the cause?

  • Mavericks server time machine restore problem

i have a mac mini with mavericks server installed
i have backed up my imac to the mac mni server without any problems can enter time machine and install files but when trying to do a system restore
This is where my trouble arises, initially the window is populated with a username of "root" which is of course the user name I'm running under on the install disk, I change that to my user name or user nickname (have tried both) and enter my password for the osxbackup.local machine and I end up getting a dialog box with "There was a problem connecting to the server osxbackup.local" it goes on to say Check the server name and ip address and if problem continues contact my administrator.   So I'm stuck here, I know my username and password are correct I've tried variations between my name and nick name but always get the same error.  I get the same error if I use a 10.9.0 install disk as well.  It seems that it is unable to contact the server based on the message but clearly the network is operating or we wouldn't have gotten this far.  The only thing I see is in the error message it says "osxbackup.local." note the period after local.  I assume that is a formatting thing and not an incorrect address and I know of no way to change this anyway. So what I thought would be a "simple matter" has like most things turned into an ordeal getting stuck on something that should be very simple.  Hopefully someone can shed some light on this?

Do not rely on Time Machine to backup OSX Server. It does not work for restores and Apple says not to use it for server. Use Carbon Copy Cloner.
Also, you should Raid 1 mirror the server drives so if one drive fails you have the 2nd drive that keeps running and you just swap out the bad drive and redo the mirror. You also need to have another backup and disaster recovery plan in place in case both hard drives fail. This mean an external backup drive to run carbon copy cloner to. Also some sort of offsite backup is also needed.

  • Time Machine error problem

    Hi,
Recently I bought a refurbished 13” Macbook Pro directly from Apple, and a 500GB external drive for Time Machine back up.
The first time I backed up with TM, no problems.
Second time…problems… It seemed to be taking ages to progress from having saved just 9 KB to just 10 KB of 20GB. Then it failed. Eventually it worked on the 4th or 5th attempt.
    Third time… no problems…
Fourth time… problems again and again and it failed. Can't get it to back up again.
    The error message is:
“The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.”
Is it likely to be a dodgy refurbished Mac or a dodgy external drive? Disc utility?
I’m leaving the country in a couple of days, and eager to get this sorted out asap.
    Any advice much appreciated. Thanks!

Took the 500GB drive back to the Apple shop and they replaced it. They formatted the old one on the spot -- hopefully they did, anyway! But it seemed to be a bit slow to reformat, therefore, it does seem to have been a dodgy external drive. Replacement seems to work fine.

  • Time machine backup problem with upgrade to Lion - Choose Backup Disk button non-existant

Hi, I just upgraded my mac mini to Lion and have encountered a problem with by Time Machine. It no longer sees my networked drive for back up. So, I followed the instructions on this site http://code.stephenmorley.org/articles/time-machine-on-a-network-drive/ and get to item 6b. and have a problem I have not been able to sort out. Instead of the button "Choose Backup Disk" on the Time Machine window, I have a button "Select Disk" with a button "Options" under it. When I click "Select Disk" I get a window promtping me to "Set Up Other Time Capsule" and clicking that takes me to a window for AirPort Utility. (screen shot )
Anyone know why I don't have the right button for starters and why I can't access any drives on my machine at all? I followed the web instructions on the site I mention above because initially I had an error about AFP, so suspected the drive set up here (it is my work) is incompatible.
(The only IT guy we have is on vacation for 2 weeks and then I am on vacation for 2 weeks and can't wait a month in order to back up! Thought I would try here to see if I can get answers before I am away.)
    Thanks in advance!

i had a similar problem when I first installed Lion last year.  It seems that some network NAS products need a firmware update to work with Lion.  I contacted the manufacturer and they helped me out.  I am using a Synology NAS system.  Problem solved after firmware update.

  • Time Machine backup problems

    Good morning.
I have a Quad-Core Intel Xeon G5, running Leopard 10.5.4. I have attached a LaCie 1TB external HD via firewire to be used as a Time Machine. The initial backup went smoothly, taking only about 6 hours to backup nearly 5.5 GB of information. The problem I'm having is this: when I go into Time Machine, all I see is the initial backup and the current backup; there is nothing incrementally in between.
I have checked the Sharing Pref and made sure the computer name is only upper and lower case letter, without spaces. Prior to the initial backup, I erased and reformatted the HD using the Disk Utility, and formatted it using the GUID Partition, which was done per instructions from the Apple website.
After all that, I am still only getting the initial backup and the current backup, and nothing else. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Or what step in the process I've missed?
    Thanks your helpm -- Michael

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "backupd" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. Post the messages from the last backup, beginning with "Starting standard backup." Post the log text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • Time Machine Restore problems

So recently my Mac's hard drive got messed up so I just reinstalled leopard with the installer disk since I've been using time machine to back up my files. So now i've been tryin to use one of the restore points from time mahine and its just stuck at the restore screen with the progress bar not even showing anything. Its been like this for more than an hour for sure so i'm not quite sure what the problem is. It's not showing a estimated time for restore so i'm thinking somethin is wrong. Does anyone know what the problem is?

The progress bar, often as not, is just kidding about what it shows. However, if you think your restore is truly stuck try to see if you can cancel it.
Did you use Disk Utility to verify and/or repair both your internal and your Time Machine disks before you started your restore? If not, you should do so.
Also, unless you have deliberately excluded your system from Time Machine backups it is not necessary to reinstall Leopard from the install DVD to do a full restore. Each Time Machine backup is a snapshot of your drive, including the system, so when you restore everything that was on your hard drive will be exactly like it was when that particular backup was made.

  • Time Machine Search Problems

I have noticed this problems since the (non-fresh) install of Snow Leopard 10.6.
Problem 1: Search. If I go to eg. Yesterday 9.00, and I know there was a file there yesterday and try to search "On my Mac" for that file, no result pops up. If I go to the folder the file was in, and search only in that folder, it appears. But it appears only for Yesterday 9.00. Yesterday 10.00 it's not displaying, although it's there. Also the navigation (Problem 2) doesn't work in search result.
Anyone an ideea what I can do about it?

You might want to get Spotlight to re-index your TM drive. Via +System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy,+ exclude your TM drive for a few moments, then remove the exclusion. That should cause a complete re-indexing (which may, of course, take a while).

I rarely use the search function there, but don't recall it ever working that way in Leopard.

  • Time Machine Permission Problems

    Hi,
So I've got a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard Server. We can use it for file sharing etc without a problem. It's Time Machine that's causing us problems. I've set up one of the 4 internal drives to be used with Time Machine, and on my MBP, I can see this drive as a one of the possible Time Machine drives.
So, when I try to run a backup, I enter my network username & password, and the clock ticks down from 120 seconds. When it tries to make the backup disk available, I see the following error:
Which would be fine if I'd entered the wrong details, but I haven't. So I'm puzzled; what could the problem be? Has anyone else encountered this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Phil

Found this likely too late for you, but can you mount the TM sharepoint manually with the same credentials on your MBP?

  • Time Machine disk problems

A bit stuck on this one. We've two macs, one running 10.10, the other (now) running 10.7. I have backed up for years with no problems to a WD external 500GB USB 2 disk, however this has become full.
I've therefore bought an Akasa USB3 enclose and WD Green 3Gb - when I format this as per Time Machine instructions, it will back up both computers once or twice, then will hang midway through an incremental backup on one of them. I then get an error saying the backup cannot be completed; running Disk Utility gets File System Check Exit Code 8, and a statement that the disk cannot be repaired - as this has happened three or four times, followed by me having to reformat, it's all getting a bit tiresome.
fsck cannot verify the volume completely.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Anyone have any suggestions?
Yes. Get rid of the drive. It doesn't work.

  • Time Machine Files Problem

I have been using Time Machine but have watched my HDD space deteriorate as it makes copies of all my files. In viewing my disk space through "About This Mac," the backup file was 110 GB. I thought this was out of hand so I turned Time Machine off (I read it would automatically delete the backup files when I do that). Instead, it deleted only about 10 GB of the backup files and turned the rest into "Other" files which are sitting stagnant on my HDD. How can I get rid of these?

Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.
