Time Machine / Mavericks Mess
After spending hours tying to get my backups to complete I figured I would start from scratch to eliminate any other possiblities. So I reformatted my machine and installed ML and the backups worked fine. Once I upgraded to Mavericks my Time Machine is in a continuous loop of "backing up" without transfereing any data or actually backing anything up.
This has been going on for 2 days now. I've tried the other suggestions I've found in other threads (repairing the disk, OS, permissions, etc., I also do not have any processes hanging or access denied issues) and nothing seems to work. This looks like a bug. Thoughts?
Well if it makes you feel better you are not alone.
My Mavericks upgrade went fine- Setup Assistant moved my old computer over to the new Mavericks computer.
And yes the Time Machine back-up was suppose to be "inherited"
The reality was the BackUp was still full but Mavericks could not see the inherited files.
leaving me very little available space left on the Backup.
I was forced to erase the past backups, reformated and started fresh from day one.
I had a bootable clone as my only other backup.
On we go.

How do you Restore Stickies in Time Machine Mavericks 10.9.3?
i lost an important note on stickies. And i retrieved an old version of it in time machine under preferences / widgets. but the setup appears to have changed in my upgrade to mavericks and I can't open the note. I'm trying to open a "post-mavericks" version in my time machine and I can't find where it is.
i saw a post that said look under Library/Preferences/Container, i have no such folder or binary document.
Also saw a post saying to go to Username/Library etc etc...I don't have a library folder under my username
Also saw a post saying to got to StickiesDatabase ( this may have been for an older OS) - that didn't work for me either.
Please help. You are looking in your Home/Library folder, right? It comes invisible by default and must be make visible to get inside.
download and run Find Any File to search for a file named "StickiesDatabase".
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a StickiesDatabase file hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

Hi,
I did a clean install of Yosemite on a 2010 MBP. It had Mavericks on it before. I want to restore Mail. I performed a Time Machine backup of the entire system before and manually backed up my mailboxes via Mailbox >Export Mailbox... for each.
My three mailboxes didn't import correctly. I imported them via Mail> Import Mailboxes >Apple Mail for each. I am missing emails and my folder structure within Mail is gone. I can't seem to access it via Time Machine. I Enter Time Machine with Mail open and cannot go back at all.
What am I doing incorrectly? The edit button disappeared.
I've manually copied the contents of my latest time machine backup from the location below.
Backups.backupdb > Computer Name > Latest > Macintosh HD > Users > Your User > Library > Mail >
I've also copied over the backed up com.apple.mail.plist file.
To the same location on the laptop. Nothing shows up in mail. Are there other locations I need to copy data from? -
Hi.
I have a problem I can't update my macbook 10.6.8 to Mavericks, because of Time Machine. It says ''This disk is used for Time Machine backups.”, but I'm not even using Time Machine and it's switch off.Because you have just loaded a new operating system and a complete backup occurs is my understanding.

would it be possible for me to downgrade from maverick to snow leopard by using a time machine backup from a different mac and transferring that backup to my maverick?
babowa:
My background is software, not hardware, so I am probably not using the correct terminology.
I took my iMac to the Apple Store to revert back to Snow Leopard. They warned me about the difficulties and complications involved. One of the issues was that you had to erase the drive 'deeply' - my term.
My understanding of this is thus: when you erase a drive you write over all the content. The density with which you write, and the number of times you write over it determine what I am calling the depth of the erase.
So, as I am sure you know, if you simply trash something, it is just marked as erased and not overwritten. Very easy to recover the file.
If you actually erase the file by overwriting it, experts can often still recover much of the data. The more times you overwrite or the more deeply you erase the more difficult it becomes to recover any data.
Mavericks does, as you say, install a firmware update and it alters your drive in a way that just trashing everything won't change. By reformatting your drive you are erasing it more deeply, and you may recall that when you do a format you maybe given options re the density/depth of it.
Now I am starting to get in over my depth, and I am sure I have gotten some of this wrong, but that is my understanding of it.
I do know that when I was at the Apple Store they used some term about the quality of the erase. Their first attempt to revert my system failed, and a second genius took over and started over. He also talked about the importance of the erase and redid it at a deeper level. I am sorry I no longer remember the exact terminology he used (I had been there many hours at that point and was exhausted). -
Black screen time machine mavericks
After installing Mavericks on a 2009 Quad-core Xeon the only thing (so far) which doesn't work properly is Time Machine. When you enter it a black rectangle is overlaid stopping you selecting anything. It happens even with the second monitor disconnected. I attach a photo:
Time machine seems to be working fine otherwise.
Any ideas?
KingsleyiMac with mavericks, time capsule for time machine backups. Worked in the past.
Today, I was playing around with second dislay (TV with AppleTV) and tried mirroring, but left it set to "extend". Turned off airplay. Later, I tried to restore a file I screwed up from time machine backup, got a black time machine file window. Any file, any directory showed nothing in backup. After reading above posts, I went back into airplay, turned it on, turned on Mirroring, and time machine now displays the past in its windows on both screens, just like it should. Turned off airplay (leaving it set to Mirroring), and time machine works as expected on the single screen.
What a bug. Thanks, Kingsley. -
Time Machine: Mavericks backup date and time issues
Time Machine: Troubleshooting backup issues

"Messages you may see after clicking the red "i" include:"
I am getting a message not listed at this page. My Time Machine fails to backup to my USB3 Passport External Drive with the error code:
"Time Machine couldn't complete the
backup to "2T PP".
The system date and time is incorrect."
I have the Date & Time preference set to:
"√ Set date and time automatically: Apple Americas/U.S. (time.apple.com)"
and it seems to be the correct time.
The Language & Region prefs, advanced, Dates tab is set to defaults but I cannot get TM to backup and the same error occurs.
How can I remedy this?Because you have just loaded a new operating system and a complete backup occurs is my understanding.

Will time machine get messed up in dual boot Leopard/Snow Leopard?
I have one piece of software that I need to use that does not work in Snow Leopard, so I have held off upgrading for awhile. I have a project coming up however that uses another piece of software that is accelerated greatly by running in Snow Leopard, thus I would like to dual boot Leopard and Snow Leopard on separate partitions.
My question is: is the Time Machine backup going to work when I am booted into either OS version? Do I have to disable time machine in one of them? I could be booted for several days at a time in one OS version or the other, so I would like to be backing up while in either os. I really value Time Machine. It has saved my behind several times.
Cheers,
-MattMatthew Woods wrote:
Thanks for the testing and tips Pondini. Sounds like everything will work, so I just ordered my copy of Snow Leopard.
You'll love it!
Your idea of excluding the the opposite boot partition from each other's time machine settings is a good one. I plan to keep most of my work files on a separate internal drive anyway (that will be included in the TM backup under either OS), so the boot partition not currently being used shouldn't change when I'm in the other OS.
Ah, in that case, don't partition the TM drive (otherwise you'll have two separate backups of the work drive). And it won't much matter whether you exclude the "other" boot volumes or not; if nothing changes, there won't be anything to back up.
There are a couple other changes in Time Machine for Snow Leopard, that you might notice:
Disk full option, messages, and handling. In TM Preferences > Options, the +Warn before old backups are deleted+ is worded +Notify after old backups are deleted+ in Snow Leopard. If the disk gets full under Leopard, the backup will fail with a message. On Snow Leopard, the oldest backup(s) will be deleted, then a message will be sent. See #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
The "Preparing" phase at the beginning of a backup is now called "Calculating Changes," and (effective with 10.6.3) you'll see "Scanning nnn items" messages when TM does a "deep traversal," and "Preparing nnn items" messages" on the TM Preferences panel and when you click the TM icon in your menubar, before actual copying gets started. -
Safari crashes after re-install from Time Machine (Mavericks)
Hi guys
At a bit of a loss. Upgraded my HDD earlier and backed my old drive up, fitted new drive and left my MBP ro install from TM.
Everything appears to be working apart from Safari. It crashes everytime I open it.
I hoping someone here can provide some assistance. I'll post the logs below.
Thanks in advance.

Because you have just loaded a new operating system and a complete backup occurs is my understanding.

How do I delete a messed up Time Machine backup?
Bad mistake. I tried to do "sudo rm -f -r backups.backupdb" or whatever the path was and also tried to use Finder to delete my backups folder. I later realized that there was a "delete" option in Time Machine. The problem is, Time Machine got messed up when I tried to go into it because I corrupted the backups folder. Now, when I try to empty the trash, it doesn't work. How do I get rid of these things?
Also, one time when I emptied it, it said that I had a negative number of files left to delete.... Then the rm process was spamming my CPU. I restarted it just now. Also, sudo rm -f -r doesn't work. I get a lot of errors. I read that it has to do with the ACLs, but I don't want to remove them since I have a lot of permissions set up. The same drive contains other machines' backups.

How does Parallels backup exclusion work with Time Machine?
Running Parallels version 9 there is a means by which you may (supposedly) request that a VM is not backed up via Time Machine (Mavericks). In the Parallel Desktop app, one chooses from the menu Virtual Machine -> Configure, selects the Security tab, and clicks in the box for "Time Machine Do not back up virtual machine.". Having done that, however, if you launch Time Machine preferences, click on "Options...", this brings up the window of "Exclude these items from backups." and there is nothing in the box indicating that the Parallels VM is being excluded. The Time Machine exclude list in that window on my machine is completely empty. I think this is pretty crummy. How do I know that the Parallels VM is really being excluded, and why doesn't it appear in the list ???
I'll follow up to my own post. I found that one can execute some Time Machine commands via the command line and so:
$ sudo tmutil isexcluded ~/Documents/Parallels/Windows\ 7.pvm/
[Excluded] /Users/myuserid/Documents/Parallels/Windows 7.pvm
It's unfortunate that there did not appear to be a "listexcluded" verb (sigh), and it's really terrible that one can see that something is excluded via the command-line, but it doesn't appear in the Time Machine whiz-bang graphical interface. I'd call that a major bug. -
Time machine back-up abysmally slow
I have reformatted my back-up disk and started a new Time Machine full back-up. The job has been running for FOUR DAYS and is presently 15.28GB of 298.8GB. It is still saying "Calculating time remaining." On the same machine, Time Machine was never a sprinter but certainly wasn't a snail.
It also slows my entire iMac down, especially since I foolishly upgraded to Mavericks (now everything's slow).
Very annoyed. Apple should come out and admit that the Time Machine/Mavericks process is a failure as it is not commercially acceptable to use such a slow system for back-ups. I'm switching to a separate system, but will let this one run so I can see how long it will actually take.
Tried restart, safe mode, then restart normally - no effect on speed.
Any tips - apart from binning the system?
DaveFind the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder and looks like this
You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
Open Console.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
To do that type the words backupd in the Filter field at the upper right of the Console window. That will cause all log entries to be hidden, except for the entries containing those words.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.
... No virus software but CleanMyMac is installed -
Get rid of it.
Good luck with that because its uninstallation instructions are ineffective, contrary to MacPaw's recently posted update. They didn't work prior to that update either. Lacking any explanation from the developer, one is left to unproductive speculation that won't help you fix what's wrong. Whether CMM is the sole cause of your difficulties or merely a contributing factor is unknown, but its presence can only complicate matters.
Like most ill-conceived "cleaning" programs, "CleanMyMac" is trash capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery.
Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software
"Essential software" is defined to specifically exclude all so-called "cleaning", "optimizing", and "anti-virus" utilities - anything that does not directly relate to the ability to use your Mac for the work or entertainment needs you presumably bought it to accomplish.
To erase and install Mavericks read: OS X Mavericks: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks and follow the procedure under Time Machine or other disk migration.
Other problems may exist but those concerns will be rendered moot by erasing your system, which must be accomplished. -
I bought an external Terabyte drive for my wife to use for a Time Machine backup on her Powerbook. (an early model, but still Intel based)
She claims that every time it's hooked up and does a backup of her computer, it wipes out her Quickbook 2011 company settings.
I wouldn't think that Time Machine could effect the settings of an application, but I could be wrong.
I can't find anything on the Quickbooks website about any problems or incompatibilities.
Is it possible that TIme Machine is messing up her settings? Is this a Time Machine issue or a Quickbooks issue?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks.Time machine while is simplistic, there are not many troubleshooting steps you can do. Her company settings are located more likely in a preference file.
At this moment there is not a whole lot of information with this issue.
questions:
does it happen all the time?
any other applications having issues? -
Some more history - I'm not too techie so added everything in I thought might be significant!
- Installed Mavericks on iMac in October 2013
- experienced regular low memory issues - used Memory Clean app as a workaround
- last week decided to upgrade installed memory from 4gb to 16gb. Faster loading but still running out of memory - just takes longer to do so.
- also last week purchased 2gb Time Capsule (to back up 660gb on 1TB drive)
- one successful Time Machine backup completed last weekend.
- I decided to try and clear some space, tidy my folders, old music files, delete duplicates etc (Not system files)
- then tried out 'time machine restore' just to test it out. Deleted files and folders recovered ok using Time Machine menu (the one that looks like outta space)
- yesterday, Avast Anti-Virus flagged virus detected (sorry, I didn't manage to capture details) and quarantined file, but I couldn't get any windows to respond so forced Mac to shutdown.
- attempted regular reboot , system hanging on white/ apple symbol screen.
- attempted Safe reboot - reboot stalls at mess 'BootCacheControl: unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist no such file or directory.
(I don't know if this is significant)
- attempt NPRAM reset, reboot hanging at Apple symbol still
- attempted reboot into Disk Utility. HD drive verified ok. Permissions checked and Safari permissions fixed (only)
- finally attempting restore from Time Machine Backup via Disk Utility. Stalls at 'select a backup source'. Menu is 'searching for Time Machine Backup....'
Nothing is listed, after a few mins machine just goes to sleep.
My Time Capsule and networks are all switched on. No idea what to try next! Most of the problems like this that people report on this forum are due to bad "utilities" like Memory Clean and Avast.
Your Mac probably didn't have a virus. There has never been an OSX virus "in the wild". Third party antivirus software is of very dubious utility on Macs. Macs are not PCs. OSX has anti-malware protection built into it already.
Do you have any other third party "utilities" on your Mac, such as CleanMyMac or MacKeeper?
Is the RAM you installed the recommended type of RAM for your Mac?
Take a look at this page: Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
But your OS may be damaged beyond repair, or beyond what disk utility is able to repair.
In that case you have a few options:
There is a small chance that a (reputable) third part utility like Techtool Pro 7 may be able to fix your OS.
Try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
bite the bullet, boot into the recovery partition or internet recovery, and erase your HD, reinstall Mavericks from scratch, and start over. Your documents are probably still on your Time Machine Backup. I wouldn't reinstall the documents via a migration- you don't want to reinstall bad system files along with your documents- but you could copy them one by one back to your internal HD. And most importantly- don't reinstall any third party "utilites" like Memory Clean or Avast (or any other third-party antivirus software, for that matter).
