Time Machine multiple computer set ups.
Hi All
I've just set up my iMac with a new Time Capsule, but now I am wondering how I can transfer back up my Macbook as well.
I want to back up and then transfer the MacBook info to my iMac.
Any help would be really appreciated.

If you want the MacBook to use Time Machine for backups, just use the Time Machine panel of System Preferences.
Just what type of info do you want to transfer from the MacBook to the iMac?

Help needed with Time Machine multiple drives set up
Hello, I need help in finding out if what I want to do is possible.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion today as I understood it can handle multiple back up drives. I see how to add a 2nd back up drive, however I do not see a way to put different folders onto different drives.
iMac - backed to a 3TB DRIVE A via the time machine
iPhoto Library original file - already on the 3TB DRIVE A - so no back up for now!
What I'd like to do is to also back up only the iPhotoLibrary file to a 2nd drive - lets call it 3TB DRIVE B
Can it be done with Mountain Lion or not really? I don't even seem to be able to exclude files from an External Disk actually.
Any other software I could use that would do the trick?
Or do I have to rearrange our already messy set up? I've put the iPhoto Library on the DRIVE A as its a faster drive. but I guess the solution would be to put the iPhoto Library original file onto the slower Drive B and only keep the iPhoto file on it?
Hmm any help or tips greatly appreciated.

Ordinarily, that's exactly what TM does. But this situation isn't ordinary. Everything you restored is considered "*new to that disk"* and will be backed-up again. See #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum, and http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
The 30% you ask about is actually 20%; the initial estimate of the space needed might be low, and TM needs workspace on the TM disk, so it adds 20% (see #7 in the FAQ Tip.) -

Well first you have to figure out what is wrong with the machine and solve that problem first.
Your post is very vague on what occured, and there are many types of "crashes" it really depends upon what see on the screen and what the hardware does, we can't see it to tell you, so you have to tell us.
I suggest you run through these user tips and provide more information about your hardware.

Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
If this is going way over your head, there are local PC/Mac techs that will assist you for a fee, Apple only does hardware repairs and is advised to use them if you discover it is, especially if under warranty/AppleCare.
Hard drive and RAM upgrades can be handled yourself or by a outside tech in many older models of Mac, but don't expect Apple to cover the new parts.

How do I transfer from time machine adobe lightroom programme to my girlfriends computer (backed up on my hard drive via time machine) with out setting up my full desktop - i need it until i can afford a new computer to restore my old set up completely.
Any ideas, I can access files - i.e. jpegs of old work, but can't edit new photos...
PIf you have a license for Lightroom, you should be able to reinstall it from an installer disc or re-download it from Adobe after explaining the situation and clarifying the license issues. Either will be simpler than trying to extract and install it from a TM backup of a different Mac, I think. If it's anything like other Adobe products, it has bits and pieces all over the place that you'll have to find and put in their right places on your girlfirend's Mac.

Time Machine & sleep computer settings
Is it OK to have time machine active and set my computer to sleep after 2 or 3 hours?
Will time machine work when the computer is not asleep, that is will it continue to back up when it is sleeping too?
Is it advisable to set my energy settings to never for computer sleep and just have my display sleeping in order to let TM backup hourly?

Hi, I just had an issue with a photoshop document, my mac book temporarily crashed the screen glitches and deleted some vital layers I had constructed (took half a day) I thought I could correct it and saved it a few times in a panic and now i really need to go back to the save I made a day ago, my time machine is not set up and I just realised my files haven't been automatically uploading to cc is there anyway I can go back a day in saves?

Video editing software only needs to save the steps taken to achieve the edit, and references the actual video files from the hard drive. So the saved files are only tiny, and it takes very little drive space to auto save to incrementing file names. I think most regular posters to this forum make a point of updating the file name of a large project every hour or so, and as a direct response to reading so many horror stories like your own. My digital audio workstation works on the same principle; it creates a backup save just in case things go wrong (which--knock on wood--hasn't happened to me) and only references audio/MIDI files that are related to the project.
My advice is to always, always back up sensitive documents. There are lots of ways of doing this, from manually to automatically. (e.g., A lot of higher-end routers let you connect external storage via USB so you can run backup software that detects any changes to a monitored folder over a network and then backs up any changed/updated documents to the connected storage. I prefer to do it myself manually, though.) -

Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire. -
I need to configure a new hard disk as backup disk for time machine.
The set up program is running since two hours and it says it will take 9 days to backup about 56 GB.

5 hours to do 6 GB of transfer is NOT normal, even for USB 2.0 so there's something wrong here. I'd say cancel it, wipe the drive and then test the integrity of the drive. Do some file transfers over to and see if it's behaving normally. It could be a bad USB cable, it could be a bad drive or bad enclosure. As it's new, I suspect you haven't really put it through its paces yet and it's important to do that first before commissioning it to serve as your "reliable backup." -
Trying to back up to external hard drive (iomega). Instructions say to erase hard drive. Won't entirely erase. Can't enter iomega in Time Machine. Computer is minimac, operating system is OSx 10.6.8.
All you need to upgrade the iBook for Tiger is another 128 MBs of RAM. It has both Firewire and USB ports. You do want to upgrade it for what you plan to do. The problem you may continue to have, however, may be due to the fact that the age of the computer is such the disk controller does not support hard drive volumes larger than 128 GBs, which is probably the reason the drive won't mount.
The reason you get DU errors is likely because the drive was formatted using the Intel Tiger version of DU, while you were using the Jaguar version. That's a definite no-no. -
TechTool Pro copying large "deleted" files when I Time Machine my computer
I have TechTool Pro 5 loaded on my MacBook Pro. I've noticed when I Time Machine the computer, about 4 gig is always (or seems to be) copied over to the time machine drive in files named "Trash Deletes". It puts them in my Application Support folder in my library.
Is this TechTool backing up my emptying the trash - if so, it sure is taking up a lot of space o the time machine drive? Hopefully, I'm wrong here. I use "Timetracker" to see what files are being backed up thru Time Machine.
Anyone else out there notice this?

LarryAlthough I own an older version of TT Pro I do not have it installed. I do not remember exactly what they install that is running in the background. What you might do, if it isn't in the documentation, is download Easy Find - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate - and use it to search for "techtool" or "micromat" which should find the item or items. However, I'm almost sure you could disable it in TT Pro's control panel for what to install.

It depends on how much backing up you want. Time Machine will do backups if you have it turned on (in Time Machine Preferences), and if you have your computer connected to a backup drive (either wired or wirelessly, like a Time Capsule), that is specified in TM Preferences, and is also turned on. So, for example, I keep my two macs turned on all the time, and I keep Time Machine turned off. When I am not using my macs they sleep. I have external USB drives for backup via Time Machine, but I don't keep them on and connected all the time. When I think of it, which is about once a week, I'll hook them up, power them on, and do a manual backup: I turn Time Machine on and tell it to backup. When I have more critical documents, I keep them backed up on Dropbox, or iCloud, so I know that every time I finish using them and close them they are backed up. If you want to have more complete backups, then you would keep your computer always connected to your backup drives, and the drives would always be powered on and time machine would always be turned on. You could either have all of these turned on all the time, or just when you are using them and power them all down when you are not using them, or have them powered on all the time, but set the computer to sleep when you are not using it. It just depends on what you are comfortable with in terms of backups.

Not sure how this all works but my problem is this: I have attached an external hard drive to my mac snow leopard 10.6 and am trying to back up my computer through Time Machine. When asked to select the drive as part of the set up, there is nothing to select. The box is empty. How do I set up Time Machine for back ups with an external drive? I am running Airport Extreme WI-FI (VERY confusing as I did not know the difference between Extreme and Capsule). Now to add another component...how does Icloud figure into all of this if I want to back up my computer systems, documents, etc? Is this a simplier way as long as I download Lion? Help!!!

Problem is likely the Format of the External drive, for TM it needs to be Mac OSX extended Journaled & GUID Partition scheme for Intel based Macs...

Time machine multiple internal hard drives to multiple external hard drives
I have four internal hard drives that I back up to four separate dedicated external hard drives. I have upgraded to leopard and would like to use TIME MACHINE but I don't see how I can set up this unique back up system. Up until now I have been using BOUNCEBACK software and that has handled this multiple sources/destinations no problem. Can TIME MACHINE do the same?

Time Machine: Old Computer / New Computer
I had been backing up my Mac Mini to an external drive using Time Machine for a couple of years. I just got a new iMac, connected the same drive to it, and am in the process of running a back up on it. Whne I open the external drive folder I see one file named 'Backups.backupdb' with the current date/time in the 'Date Modified' column.
I don't think I just overwrote my 2 years of back ups from the Mini (which WAS going to be my question) since there are 2 directories in that 'Backups.backupdb' directory - one with each computer name. The question becomes how to restore files from the old computer to the new. Do I have to now search for them directly on the external drive (i.e. not use Time Machine to restore)?
After 2 years of working with it Time Machine still has me a bit confused,Use the Migration Assistant to import them.

How to restore Time Machine multiple drives
Hey, fellow Mac-ers. I have a new situation for me, and some questions on how Time Machine works. I have a Macbook Pro, bought it from Apple, set up Time Machine, and voila, everything is awesome. But, now I have upgraded it to a second hard drive (made the Superdrive external), and Time Machine appears to be backing up the iTunes and iPhoto libraries that I moved to the second drive. Great.
A. But, let's say the worst happens - how do I restore it?
A.1. Let's say I have to buy a new hard drive, this one with double-capacity, so can I restore both drives to the one?
A.2. Or, let's say the second drive (a standard hard disk instead of SSD) dies, can I just restore that volume?
A.3. Or, let's just say I have 2 new blank hard drives, will Time Machine just restore volume-to-volume like it was backed up?
B. That takes me back to, how does Time Machine work after all? It seems to have automatically recognized the new volume and included that in the backups, but I am inferring that from the total data size it says it is backing up.
B.1. How can I tell for sure? I see where I can exclude from backup, but nowhere where I can include, or a list of backed up folders/volumes. I guess I can open Finder to a folder on the new volume, and enter Time Machine - that should show a stack of folders back through time.
B.2. On the new volume, what exactly is it backing up? Everything? I noticed it didn't back up everything from my boot volume - it probably only backs up /Applications, /Users, things like that - but not /etc, /var, or other stuff where I may have edited scripts and config files. My cron jobs were gone after restore.Exactly what happens with Time Machine (TM) in yosemite is somewhat of a mystery to all of us.

Read at least the first two articles.. and at least glance over FAQ and Troubleshooting so you know what is in there.
The stuff at the bottom of the home page about using TM as recovery is also very helpful albeit rather old.
TM is designed to be very automated.. and not require user intervention on any major scale. So lots of times people do not know that their backups are not working or have failed.
I think you are better reading the background than me jumping in to answer the specifics.. except to say the multiple volumes is covered in Q32 of FAQ.
You will also see that finding out the exact details of what TM is doing is not super easy.
Read Q7-8 in the FAQ.
But the guy who wrote it all up.. James Pond died a couple of years ago now so it is not up to date past Mountain Lion. Most of it is still relevant.. but Yosemite has been very unreliable.
I have taken to recommending people use an alternative.. there are several third party backups.. The first article you read from above will show you how TM is different from the clone type backups.. let me encourage you to use a cloner. I use Carbon Copy Cloner. It costs $40 but can produce a bootable clone to any external drive. The end result is a backup you can test in a matter of moments that it works. And as a clone it copies everything. That doesn't stop you using TM.. it is excellent for what it does.. (once we get past the buggy introduction of Yosemite at least).
There are a number listed.. Superduper has long been popular and Chronosync has also got a following. I find CCC works great.. but I am not connected.. and I paid my $40 and will have to pay to upgrade when I can stomach Yosemite for more than an hour, so I am not on a free ride.
