Time machine: need to use an now unsuported program.

Hi!
My dad just updated my Mac book Pro to Lion. In doing so, made a program he uses called Palm Desktop incompatible, and he needs some files from it. I believe he regularly backed up with Time Machine. My question is this: is it possible for him to restore his old system with the older OS, use the program, get and backup his files, and then use time machine again to restore back to his current system? If I'm completely off on how Time machine works is there another method of getting the files?
Thank you.

Install the older OS onto an external drive or second partition and then use the Setup Assistant to restore the backup. This won't affect your current system.

  • Used Time Machine to Restore system but now wont recognise original backups

    Hello Everyone,
I've had a read through some of the older posts, but I wasn't able to find a answer for my issue.
I've recently restored my system using a Time Machine backup - Everything works wonderfully now, except for Time Machine itself, which is now refusing to use/display my original backups.
I have selected the correct disk, but rather than using the backups on it, it creates a new folder in the Backups.backupdb folder called 'Peter's iMac 2'. I have deleted this new folder several times already.
My actual backups are stored in the 'Peter's iMac' folder.
I can browse my backups using the 'Browse Other time Machine Disks' function, but it does not seem to want to use them as my primary backups.
I do not have the room to hold both my old backups, and a separate new backup.
Does anyone have any idea how I can force/trick/entice Time Machine to accept my old backups?
    Thanks everyone.

    aussie,
*_Time Machine Always Performs a Full Backup After a Full Restore_*
Actually, this is normal. It's not that any of your hardware has changed, it's that you reinstalled the operating system again. Consider the following according to the KB article below:
    *Full Backup After Restore*
Bear in mind that in all cases Time Machine will perform a full backup after a full restore. This is normal. Time Machine will resume incremental backups after the full backup has completed. To view previous backups, Control-click or right-click the Time Machine icon in your Dock or Option-click the Time Machine menu extra and Choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks," then select your previous backup volume. You will enter Time Machine and be able to browse your previous back ups and restore files. [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338]
So even on unchanged hardware, if you reinstall your system software and restore your user data, Time Machine starts anew, and you will not be able to resume backing up with the same history as the previous backups.
While there may be ways to fool/hack Time Machine into recognizing previous backups without performing another full backup, they are likely rather elaborate.
Ultimately, though, in a couple of months, all the effort to preserve old backups may seem pointless. After all, Time Machine will eventually purge away that data anyways as it replaces it with new files.
It may simply be easier to begin a fresh series of backups while saving the previous backups until your satisfied that you have enough history built up. Then delete the old backups.
    Hope this clarifies some things.
    Cheers!

How can I use my time capsule as a time machine backup without using it wirelessly and not as a wireless router?

It is better to have the TC as part of the main network in bridge. You do not need to run wireless.
If you want to use the TC plugged in by ethernet and still use wireless for internet, that is possible but the setup is rather more complicated.. the computer must not get confused about which device to use as a gateway or dns server.
See info in this thread on setting this up.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
I need to add.. a USB drive would be cheaper, faster and more reliable. It is really poor use of a TC.

  • If I completely fill my hard drive 500Gb how time machine will keep working having 1Tb of total space, I mean I have to delete mu hard drive but how I keep my previous information on time machine and keep using to with new information?

If I completely fill my hard drive 500Gb how time machine will keep working having 1Tb of total space [externak hard drive], I mean I have to delete my hard drive but how I keep my previous information on time machine and keep using it with new information?

Time Machine does not provide archival storage.
If you delete a file from your disk it will eventually be deleted from your TM backup without any notice to you.
You need a second external disk to use for archival storage.
You also need a third disk for backups of the second disk.

  • Time machine needs reinstalling?

    Greetings,
I wanted to enable Time Machine for the first time today.
So I go to System Preferences and click "Time Machine". One thing is weird here: a first click only shows "Loading Time Machine" in the title bar but doesn't open the pane (I can wait forever). I have to click a second time to open the pane.
Then, the padlock is invisible (I only see the "Click the lock to make changes" prompt but not the padlock). Moving the mouse over the padlock makes it showing. At this point, I'm thinking the prefs pane is corrupt.
And... that's all... Clicking the padlock (which is closed) doesn't ask me for the admin username and password and doesn't open the padlock so I can't do anything, except using the "Show Time Machine in menubar" checkbox.
So I'm thinking of reinstalling the Time Machine prefs pane using "Pacifist" (archive and install isn't an option for me because my internet connection is too slow for all the updates). However, I see one problem: my install DVD is around 10.5.0 and my installed OS is 10.5.8. I'm guessing the Time Machine prefs panes are different for these 2 OS versions. What can I do, otherwise?

    Hello,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Then trash the original of this last one, since move only copies it.
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Hello, and thanks for your answer!
I've followed your advices (mostly: I've not put the finder and desktop plist files to the desktop, I wanted to do it at the very least. However, the problem has disappeared before that).
So, I can now finally access Time Machine (thanks again, BDAqua!). However, all seems to indicate it hasn't been installed correctly (I'm speaking about the preferences pane). While Time Machine is actually working (does the backup), it has several weird glitches:
1: in System Preferences, the icon is the generic System Preferences icon instead of Time Machine's icon.
2: the prefs pane's title shows "com.apple.prefs.backup" (or "Loading com.apple.prefs.backup" when it loads). Along with point 1, it seems to indicate it can't access the resources in the bundle, I'm wrong?
3: both in the status menu and in the prefs pane, the dates are weird number-formatted (instead of expected dates, they show like "22065118000". I can't explain this number, it doesn't even seem to be the number of seconds since 19 january 1904 (a standard base date in computers, as you may know)).
    4: the ON/OFF switch doesn't show.
    For points 2, 3 and 4, I've taken a screenshot:
    http://homepage.mac.com/anic297/timemachine.pict
Most of these problems aren't annoying now that Time Machine works in its basis. The only problem that is still annoying is the one about the dates. I'd like to see "Last backup: <correct date>" in the status menu instead of "Last backup: 2207019000", as it is now. Macs were more easy to control and repair in Mac OS 9 days!
    Any idea?

The error that I am getting is this "Time Machine can't use the disk image because it can't be written to."  Any ideas on the fix for this?  When I go to the Time Capsule my Macbook Pro shows that it is locked, I think I did something wrong, but can't figure how to unlock it to see if that fixes it.

As far as we know, Time Machine cannot write to a disk image. It needs to write directly to the Time Capsule disk.

  • HT201250 Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  I'm trying to restore lost photo files and I see them listed in Time Machine (without use of an external drive), but when I try to restore I get a error code 36.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean!  When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message:  "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

Thanks so much Terence.  I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/E9.html
That worked like a charm.  I really appreciate it.

  • HT201250 Time machine back up using a external hard drive connected to the Airport extreme

How can I setup a time machine back up using a external hard drive connected to the Airport extreme? Even better for time managment purposes I want to use the Eithernet Thunderbolt connection for the first back up and then through the wifi there after for daily routine Time Machine back ups.

You can attach a hard drive, but Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port at the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple, so it's not possible to say what your actual results might be.
If you decide to try this, it would be wise to have a secondary backup plan in place as well.

In technical support, sometimes you have to make educated guesses. I'm sorry that you were offended.
iTunes does prompt when it is going to erase a device, and the message is clear.
She said in her message that she was able to successfully sync the old ipad. This indicated to me that itunes wiping the data was not an issue, because either it had been setup at the apple store (in which case it doesn't actually wipe the ipad despite saying it will*) (*based on a single case I saw), or because the itunes media folder was migrated.
Furthermore, my solution was to tell her how to backup her ipad (by either doing it manually, or as a last resort, by deleting the corrupt backup -- that she couldn't access anyway.)
I got that last part of the instructions from the "Taking Control of your iphone" book which I found samples of when I did a google search for "corrupted backup itunes".
She marked this as a solution, so it worked for her.

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.
Backup failed with error: The target disk image volume is read-only.
Most likely, you got this message before all this started:
What that doesn't explicity say is, the backups failed the verification.  When that happens, Time Machine marks the sparse bundle as damaged and won't back up to it anymore (even if Repair Disk can't find the problem).  See #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details.
