Time Machine needs "work space" after reinstall of Snow Leopard

Hey all,
I had to completely nuke my hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard after my hard drive got corrupted and my MacBook wouldn't boot up. I restored my system from my Time Machine backup, and after installing all updates, everything on the system seems all hunkey-dorey.
Except for Time Machine. Whenever TM tries to do a backup, it tells me that it needs 250GB of storage for a backup - as if it's completely ignoring all my old backups. I'd prefer not to wipe my external drive, so if there's a way to get TM to work again without a wipe, I'd love to hear it, but I suppose if I have to, I have to.
One more thing, according to the Time Machine Buddy widget, TM detects that it has a migration, but the UUID doesn't match. Here's the full log.

You reinstalled OS X which causes TM to backup the drive from scratch. This is normal.

Time Machine Out of Space After Updating To iLife 09

I finally updated to iLife 09 yesterday and as soon as I did Time Machine was unable to do any more backups... It says that it needs 90+ GB of Space and only 60+ are available. Any thoughts? My Mac has 193GB and my Time Machine Disc is 250GB. I understand that it needs room to work as well but obviously something changed after I installed iLife. I'm guessing something with iPhoto? I also noticed that my actual iPhoto's take up 60GB but the iPhoto App is a bit over 100GB. I hate to have to step up and buy a bigger drive as this one is really big enough for what I'm doing...

The upgrade changed most of the files, I think for the "facial recognition" feature, so they all have to be backed-up again. Time Machine adds 20% to the expected size of the backup for workspace, so there must have been about another 15 GB of changes (60 + 15 = 75 + 20% = 90).

The iPhoto app in your Applications folder is 100 GB? The app does not contain data. Mine is 430 MB.
And yes, your TM disk is too small. It varies greatly depending on how you use your Mac, and how long you want backups to be kept, but the rule of thumb is TM needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up. See #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
What's most likely happened here is, Time Machine, needing to back up about 75 GB (and needing that extra 20% for 90 GB), has deleted all your old backups except the last remaining one (which it will never delete). Assuming that takes 190 GB, that leaves only 60 GB available, so there's not enough room.
Short term, your only real options are to delete the previous backups of your iPhoto library (see #12 in the FAQ Tip), or erase the TM drive and let it start fresh.
Longer term, you need a larger drive. They've gotten much less expensive in the last couple of years. Then use the old one for a "bootable clone" via CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, as a secondary backup. That way, you're protected against a failure of either app or hard drive.

Isight is not working anymore after updating to snow leopard

it used to work very well. i updated snow leopard 5 days ago. i try to use skype and photo booth, it is never working again. do people have the same problem?

You may be correct that the problem has something to do with your SL update, but, as previously explained, many of us successfully use iSight every day after upgrading to Snow Leopard, so the problem is not SL itself. If you believe that your problem is with your update, you should consider reapplying the update using the method suggested above.
If you continue to have iSight problems after properly applying the SL update, consider all relevant troubleshooting suggestions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
However, if your iSight problem continues, and if iSight now does NOT show as a USB device in your Mac's System Profiler, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
If, after properly applying the SL update and using the Troubleshooting suggestions, iSight IS recognized in System Profiler but still does NOT work with any of your video-enabled Apple software, your disk may contain some pre-SL software that is causing problems. Either erase the disk and apply only Apple software to see if that fixes your problem, or seek help from your Apple-Authorized Service Provider.

Time machine need more space than necessary.

Hi.
Can anyone help. I have a two 1TB external hard drives one backs the other up. Until now it has been fine but suddenly time machine has decided theres not enough room even though there the same size drives. Ive deleted the backup drive and the time machine preferences but it still wont work. I have one drive with 930GB on and time machine says it needs 1.1TB of space. Why dose it need an extra 170GB. Help?

Since Time Machine keeps copies of previous versions of things you've changed or deleted, it needs much more space than the data it's backing-up.
The extra 170 GB is for "padding" -- workspace on the backup volume, and in case the original estimate isn't accurate, or more files are changed or added while the backup is running.
#1 in the link Carolyn supplied explains this a bit more, and recomends that your backup drive be 2-3 times the size of the data it's backing-up.

Time Machine out of space after 10.10.3 upgrade

After upgrading from 10.10.2 to 10.10.3, Time Machine says I am out of space on my 1 TB Time Capsule. I have 122 GB of space available, but it's saying I need 423 GB to perform a backup. I suspect this is because iPhoto change to Photo and my Time Capsule is now hosting two copies of my photo library: the older one from iPhoto and the newer one from Photo.
Other than wiping out my Time Capsule and backing up from scratch, any ideas how I can get Time Machine the space it needs? Thanks!

You will have to erase the Time Capsule drive and re-backup from scratch.

Time Capsule backup not working anymore after upgrade to Snow Leopard

Hi,
after I upgraded to Snow Leopard I started the backup process with the time capsule. Within several days I tried this about 5 times and the iMac crashed or froze after some time doing the backup - but it never completed.
I then deleted the whole content of the time capsule and started a fresh backup. Now I receive a message after some gigabyte that there was a problem and I should try it again. Again the backup has not finished so far. I tried to reduce the amount of files to backup by excluding folders - no chance. Since the upgrade to snow I was not able to complete one single backup.
Any ideas or similar experience?

I have had a similar problem. I have the latest 1TB Time Capsule and backup worked fine in Leopard. I am backing up over my home wireless network. The backup starts, but at some point it freezes with the spinning pizza wheel if I click on anything. Everything freezes with no possibility of force quitting any application.
I tried trashing the plist for Time Machine, but that didn't work. Tonight I'm going to try a backup with the computer connected to the Time Capsule by Ethernet.
I can access my existing Time Machine backups on the Time Capsule.
This is a frustrating situation. But for this, SL works great, but this problem is a critical one.

Restoring my System with Time Machine to a new HD without the Snow Leopard DVD

Hi there,
I changed my HD in my MacBook Pro to a bigger one and then wanted to Restore the System via Time Machine onto that new HD. Sadly I dont have the Snow Leopard DVD that was coming with the MacBook. Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:
When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". But iwill not boot from the DVD.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?

You can't use a machine specific OS X install disk with another model of Mac.
It has to do with hardware drivers being on one disk and not applicable to another machine, why you get the kernel panic.

No. You need the OS X install disk.
Choices depending on what your machine is:
1: If your machine with the missing OS X install disk originally came with 10.6.3 or later, call Apple for machine specific replacement disks, there will be a fee of course. That's the only ones that will work.
2: If your machine originally came with 10.6.2 or earlier, you can choose to buy the 10.6.3 retail disk from Apple online, however it contains no free iLife. It comes faster.
3: If your machine originally came with 10.0 - 10.6.2, and you want the free iLife, then order the machine specific versions from Apple, however it might take longer.
4: If your machine originally came with 10.5, and your now on 10.6.x via the 10.6.3 retail disk, you can extract the free iLife from the 10.5 disks using Pacifist from CharlesSoft if you don't want to buy iLife.

Yes, once you have gotten a new OS X install disk, consider making bootable clones.
It's software that can clone your entire OS X drive/partition (no Bootcamp or Filevaulted) to another external drive and you can easily hold the option key to boot from it.

Rapidly decreasing hard-drive space after upgrading to snow leopard

So... recently upgraded to SL on my just over 1 year old MBP. No problems at first, but now acting really... odd...
When I first upgraded I had moved a bunch of files over to an external drive to have enough hard drive space. Had 11GB open when I upgraded, up to 23GB after the upgrade. Then, the other night, I suddenly get a "your startup disk is full" message. I was shocked. Checked and sure enough, had something like 270KB open. I had not saved any new files on the hard drive since I upgraded. Right after I got this message my computer spazzed out and I got a "you must restart your computer" message. Did, and afterwords had 7GB of free space on my hard drive. Don't know what happened to my 23 from a few days prior...
Since then, I have gotten the "your startup disk is full" message several times. When I check, I have everything from 3GB to 0KB of free space. Usually a restart solves the problem for a few hours, but then it pops up again. (In fact, as I wrote that, the message popped up on my screen once again... when I started this post I had 500-something KB free. Currently have 257KB free... again... no files saved/downloaded in the past few days...)
I've never had a problem like this before, and this is BEYOND annoying at this point... considering I've lost all the free space I freed up BEFORE I even upgraded, not to mention the extra space I was supposed to get by upgrading in the first place... plus I've had to restart my computer 5-6 times over the past 2 days, which is more than I've had to do it in the year that I've owned it...

So I'm having the same problem. I was converting songs in iTunes and browsing the web in Safari with a few torrents running in the background with Transmission. All the sudden the computer started hanging and I decided to restarted. After the restart, the Apple logo showed on the grey startup screen with a white progress bar (looked like a firmware update). When it completed and booted to the login screen I got a prompt that my startup disk was full and to delete some files. I know this can't be right because I had about 50GB free on my startup disk. Then after restart I noticed that the drive was fluctuating a lot! It first said I had ~250MB free, then jumped to 698 - 769MB!
I'm attempting a Snow Leopard install DVD startup and Disk Utility fix for repair and permissions. I really hope my HDD hasn't decided to randomly crap out. :-/

Airport utility cannot find time capsule unless I reboot each time I need to back up. Use snow leopard

Why do I have to reboot the time capsule every time that time machine calls for a back-up?

Constant amber LED is nothing to do with network.. it actually is showing the TC is actually got a bad power supply or the disk is dead.
Power it off.. and do a full factory reset.
The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on.. all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Then you can see if it boots beyond the solid amber.. if not let it cool right down for several hours and try again.

Time Machine quit working after Upgrade to 10.9.2

Time Machine quit working after I downloaded and installed the latest security upgrade 10.9.2. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure this is what you want. There are a lot of repeated, multi-line patterns that I left in simply because I really don't know what I'm doing. My apologies if there is too much irrelevant information. Also, the logs did not go all the way back to when the problem started.

Time machine can not access time capsule after upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion

Two days ago I upgraded my 2009 17" MBP from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. That evening my time capsule/time machine combination worked fine and did an incremental backup of about 12 gigabyte. Yesterday - only one day later - the time machine backup did not work anymore.
It appears that the system can not find the time capsule - even though it shows the remaining free space on the time capsule (so it did find it after all).
The message is always the same:
Time Machine can not complete the backup "Time Capsule"
The image of the backup volume "/Volumes/Data/Pauls MacBookPro.sparsebundle" is not accessable (Error -1).
I also can not delete the backup image on the time capsule since it is read-only. And I do not want to format the time caspsule yet since my wife's MBAir is also using the same time casule.
I tried out all kinds of suggestions (hard and soft resetting both the MBP and the TC, entering the password again, setting the TC up again) all to no avail. No backup is possible anymore.

Sounds like you got this message earlier:
If so, see #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Offhand, I don't recall anyone not being able to delete one via the Finder (but most were only backing-up one Mac, so just erased the disk).
You may have to wait for that message to appear again (24 hours later), or you might try holding Alt/Option with the TM icon in the menubar, and select Verify Backups if it will let you.

Time Machine takes up space on SSD

Hey guys,
First I wanna apologize if this has been addressed, I tried looking for it with no avail. Anyway, I had set up a NAS using my router, but it was formatted in NTFS so my Windows 8 laptop can use it as well.
Well after learning about the OWC SSD upgrade for the Macbook Pro Retina I decided that maybe I should purchase it, but I'll need to create a Time Machine back up so if I wanna restore it to the new SSD I can do so easily. I'm still unsure about the entire process, but I hope to learn it before I progress. I talked with both Apple and OWC and turns out this upgrade doesn't void any warranties, either from Apple care or origninal warranty as long as it's installed properly.
Anyway, after transferring everything from my external HDD to my SSD, I reformatted it to Mac Journaled then transferred everything back to the external HDD. Then I started my time machine backup.
After that completed, I unplugged it and carried on with my day. After restarting my computer I looked at my storage space and to my shock and dismay, I had over 100 GBs being taken up for 'backups' on my primary SSD and I couldn't figure out how to get rid of it.
By luck I turned off time machine and turned it back on and all that space was given back to me. I did another time machine backup several hours later and noticed 40 GBs were take up. Did the same thing (turning off and back on time machine) and the space was returned to me.
Basically why is this happening? Why is my internal SSD storing backups? Is this normal, should I ignore it and the system will remove this as needed? Or is it common practice to turn off and on the time machine to return that space back to me.

It's normal. Time Machine now stores local snapshots on portable Macs. The space used by backups is only used if there's space to do so - if you need the space for other file storage, they will be automatically deleted.

Cannot get Time Machine to work

I just installed Leopard on my Power MacG4. I can't get Time Machine to work. I have gone to Utilities and repaired partitions twice. That doesn't seem to be the problem. I have no idea what to do. Any ideas?

There should be better messages in your logs. Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the failed backup, then copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).

Time Machine and missing space on lacie drive

I've got time machine all set up, but my backups keep failing. Time machine says that this is because there are only 19.2 GB available of the 149 GB on my external drive. I can only seem to find about 81 GB worth of stuff on my drive. I can't figure out what is taking up so much space. What is the problem?

There have been a couple of posts saying that Time Machine needs twenty percent of free space on its disk. If you subtract that amount there should be approximately 38.2GB of space available for new files. I have no earthly idea where Time Machine is coming up with the 19.2 GB number. Report it as a bug through Feedback.

However, given that you are somewhat tight on space on your external Time Machine is probably not the best choice for backing up your 40GB of data. Unless you disconnect the disk or turn Time Machine off it will make hourly backups which will eat up the small amount of your available drive space very quickly. Also, Time Machine sometimes has problems deleting old backups to make room for new ones when the initial backup is close to taking up most of the Time Machine disk's available space.
Carbon Copy Cloner might be a better choice for you. It has the capability of doing incremental backups as well as being able to make clones.
