Time Machine Network: possible to setup quota?

Hi Folks,
I have several computers successfully backing up via Time Machine to Leopard Server sharepoint using the "Enable as Time Machine backup destination".
My question: how can I enable a quota on the directory (within a volume) where this data is being stored?
I've scoured the archives for an answer, but haven't found one yet.
Many thanks in advance.
Lurch

TM will not work with any network drive (NAS) except Time Capsule.
Requirements to use Time Machine
Time Machine is only available with Leopard (10.5.x)
1. External FireWire or USB 2.0 drive
2. Time Capsule
3. Drive shared by a Mac running 10.5 or later using File Sharing
4. Drive shared by a Mac running 10.5 Server
5. SAN volume managed by Apple's Xsan file system
A TM drive must be partitioned with either APM (PPC) or GUID (Intel) and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

  • Possible to restore iTunes safely to a new mac (from time machine backup) without using setup/migration assistant?

    Hello all,
I have just acquired a new MacBook which I want to set up completely fresh. The only data I really need to restore/copy to it, besides a few document folders, is the iTunes library from my existing iMac. The iTunes library has been backed up using time machine on the iMac (using a portable drive). I’ve heard it might be possible for me to plug the time machine backup into the new MacBook and then option-click the time machine icon in order to 'browse other backup disks' and then restore iTunes. Would this work and would all my devices still sync with iTunes? I’m just a bit nervous because apple has migration assistant and setup assistant for doing this sort of thing - I just really don’t want to use them because the only thing I want on my new MacBook from the whole of the time machine backup is literally the iTunes library. I don’t want to start restoring user accounts which you must do with the assistants.
    Thank you.

Thank you ever so much for the replies. Just one thing: the link you provided seems to discuss restoring individual items on the computer for which a backup has been made. On my macbook I can't click "enter time machine" which I'm guessing is because the time machine backup is for my old iMac (hence my comment about control clicking the menu bar).

  • Time Machine + Network User

Is it possible for a network user to use Time Machine to backup their home folder ?
I really want this feature but last time I tried it seemed not to be possible…?

You could make them all mobile users so they have a copy of the data on they're computers, then share a volume and enable it as a time machine destination, enable quotas on that disk ( cant be the same as where you keep they're homes or time machine will suck up they're quota ), set the the quota on the disk ( sudo edquota user ) and have them all backup there, you could exclude all system files if all you want is they're homes.
Another thing you could do is backup the whole share but you would have to recover files for them.
Hope it helps, if you find a better way do let me know

  • Time machine network harddrive

    Hi there,
I/m new in using time machine on my iMac.
Now i'm using a external harddrive (1TB) connected by usb.
I would rather like to use a harddrive which is connected to my network; I see it in finder, but can't be selected as a drive for Time Machine; it only shows "local" connected drive's connected by usb.....
q/     Is there a possibility to use the harddrive connected to my network ?

In theory as long as your TM can see the HD you can backup to it. But, and you would need to double check this, you may well need your HD formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I suspect your Windows HD is formatted NTFS and I doubt if you could partition re-format without loosing your data.
There are a number of options for your backup plan so come back if we're on the right track.

  • Time Machine network connection problems. Scary.

I have several problems with the Time Machine backup system. I do not know if they are based on the same basic problem or if these are different problems. Therefor I will describe the whole complex here:
I have a setup with 2 computers, a Mac Pro and a Laptop Pro, and 2 different backup discs (2TB Lacie backup disc), all of this connected to the router with ethernet except the laptop which goes with wifi. The plan was to have one disc to back up each computer.
Initially I got the setup to work. But after a while, both computers says that there is a problem finding its backup disc. This happens without any changes in setup, passwords or physical connections. Sometimes I am able to connect to the backup disc by typing in the ip address or otherwise, and sometimes that doesn't work either. When I finally (sometimes) get contact between machine and its backup disc, the Time Machine panel shows "no previous backup". Pretty scaring. All my work is on those discs (should be).
Another problem is, for the Mac Pro machine, that it sometimes says "not enough free space on disc for backup". At the same time, Time Machine is set up to delete older backup versions as soon as it is needed. How does that fit together?
Today I bought a new and expensive router (Netgear 600), just in case it was something wrong with the old one. But I still have the same problems.
Any enlightening on this situation is very much appreciated!
    Thanks

    Hi all,
To fix the Time Capsule network backup error, I removed the 5GHZ band from my AEB network.
After that it backed everything up all fine.

  • Cannot see latest Time Machine backup in Recovery, Setup Assistant, Migration Assistant

I was experiencing really slow HD response, and so chose to boot into the Recovery HD and run Disk First Aid.  Disk First Aid said there was an issue and recommended a I backup and reformat the drive and reinstall.  So I rebooted into my main drive, made sure Time Machine had done a backup of the latest files.  Then rebooted into Recovery HD.  Reformated the HD in Disk First Aid.  Then went to Restore from Time Machine Backup.  Under that heading it would only let me restore a system from 6 months ago.  I want restore the latest backup that I verified it had run.  So then I decided to Reinstall the OS and hope that Setup Assistant would see the latest update.  It didn't even see the drive to recover from.  So I skipped it and then hoped Migration Assistant would recognize it.  Migration Assistant recognized the backup drive (Time Capsule) but then wouldn't recognize the specific backup for this machine.  It only saw the backup of a different computer on my network.  So what's going on?  Why won't my computer restore from the latest backup?  Am I going to have to manually restore?  Which would suck considering the number of apps I am going to have to reinstall.  Any help on this issue would be much appreciated.  I am running 10.8.3 on a 2009 13" MacBook Pro w/ 8 GB RAM and a 500GB HD.

    Thank you for your response!
    Thinking out loud:
Both external LaCie's were were subject to a veriy and repairt process with no errors were found.
They both mount on the iMac desktop with no problems.
TM bu's to the LaCie's appear to operate correctly.
I can easliy and quickely move content to and from them at will.
Evidence seems to suggest that when entering Migration Assistant(MA), the automatic process of closing all applications save MA, seems to break the iMac<> LaCie connection. Could this be a good lead?

Thank you. In my view this is very significant as this behavior, it now appears for me, leaves MA as the only option. Not to value MA vs Recovery objectivly, rather, there are benefits exclusive to each process. As I sit now however, MA fails to recongnise not only the TM bu's residing on both LaCie's; MA fails to recongnise the LaCie's as hardware.

  • Time machine, network, disk addition, JBOD array question.

So here's my setup (future) MBP with 256gb ssd, Macbook with 140gb HDD, MB used as networked storage, preferrably on ubuntu. I have a 500gb HD i use for backups on my MB, and a 750gb hdd i would like to be able to use independantly. I need a solution! I would like to be able to back up to a combo of the 500 and 750 gb hdds, and be able to take the big one out of the setup like on a trip. I have looked into JBOD and RAID 0, both sound iffy. What about RAID 1? is there some software (CCC?) that would allow me to back up the 750gb hd to the 500 one? Thanks ahead for any help!
P.S. I have backups on the 500gb one, so i would have to be able to move them over somehow.

    Thanks for your reply.

  • Time Machine Network drive no longer available

I have an iomega network drive with 2 TBs of storage.  I originally set it up as my Time Machine (TM) back-up device
and it had been working for several months.  Then it filled up and would no longer do any back-ups.
I changed the back-up device to a USB external, did a back-up to it and then went and deleted all of the old
back-ups on the networkd drive.  Then I tried to switch the back-up device to the network drive again
and even though the network drive is accessible in Finder, it does not show up as a drive option
in the Time Machine preferences.  How do I make it available again.
    I am running OS X version 10.7.5.

    Hi Richard,
Did you delete the older stuff in Finder, or in TM itself?
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Can't imaging something not being covered there.

  • Time Machine and possibly Dropbox - specific scheduling?

hi all - is there any way to specify exactly what times Time Machine will do its thing? These are not in the Time Machine preferences. Perhaps someone knows a reliable third-party app?
It would be great to specify exact times when TM would run.
It would also be great to try to get TM backups and Dropbox auto-syncing to not happen at the same time!!
    any advice?
    thanks

snow leopard / imac desktop / macbook pro / Dropbox Pro / TM to external 3TB hard drive

Time Machine only backs up files on your local computer.. but if you have a local dropbox directory.. you should remove it from TM backups.
    See http://www.noproblemmac.com/blog/2013/04/01/how-to-exclude-items-from-a-time-mac hine-backup/
Dropbox and similar type setups can use a local mega size file.. this file is say 20GB.. every time it changes with the addition of 2KB file or 10GB file,, TM will do another backup.. this means TM will rapidly run out of space and you will have huge numbers of useless dropbox backups.
Any virtual disk file which is used as a container should be backed up as a separate item and removed from TM which does not work well with these.

  • Time machine network backup really ***** (truly)

    Ok I've said it..
    Ok I've had enough..
Come on Guy's. Apple really has to take some flack here. No more excuses. You advertised timemachine backup to a network share would work easily. You advertise apple software works without a hitch (unlike MS windows)...but I've had nothing but hastles setting up time machine to backup to a mac server attached usb drive. I've BEEN a windows user before and I tell you this is just like going back to the dark side!
    And another thing
No I'm not trying to use an airport extreme mount
No I'm not trying to use a NAS
No I'm not trying to back up a linux or PC volume
I'm being a good little customer. It's all using mac to mac. Yes, it's Leopard to Leopard...
    Hastle one:
The drive mount. I've successfully done this for 3 networked macs. It took a while, was working a few days, but the mount is unreliable. If one of the macs goes down, time machine doesn't work anymore. I get the error "backup disc image could not be mounted". Apparently the problem is with the "sparseimage". One solution I've read is to delete the sparseimage then try again. Fine
    Hastle two:
I can't work out how to delete the sparseimage! I get an error cannot do - "the item token is in use"
Apple needs to take a cold shower on time machine.
Where is the help on this? Where is the customer apologies? Where are the solutions?
Obviously there was not pre release testing. Wait a minute WE are the pre-release testing!
It is just plain unreliable as a backup solution for macs on a home ethernet network..even when all the gear is actually mac!
I give it a rating of 1 out of 10 on this.
Come on guys lift you game!

I have had nothing but problems with Time Machine. We are wasting our valuable time with a product that SIMPLY DOES NOT WORK. Apple needs to weigh in here. We are wasting our "TIME" on our "MACHINES" Now I see why Apple calls it TIME MACHINE!

  • Time Machine network backup swapped to USB backup

    Hi there,
I have a Time Machine Backup drive connected to my Airport Extreme network, which backups both my iMac and Macbook Pro which I love - it is totally no hassle and has been great.
However I have just moved house and will not be able to set up a network again for a few weeks - my question is can I plug my Time Machine drive directly into my MacBook Pro/iMac to back up as normal? I don't want to erase the backups already on the drive, I just want to add to it as it would do automatically on the network. Has anyone had any experience with this - I'm hesitant to try it out incase I lose my backups!
    Thanks!

Hi. Don't know if you ever got yours working, but was having the same problem after many successful backups and nothing changed on my system. I shut down my computer and then unplugged the TC for a few minutes. Let it restart. Then restarted my computer and reselected the TC in Preferences>Time Machine>Options and now it's backing up normally. Of course I have no idea if this actually fixed the problem, but it is working.

  • Time Machine Network HD

    Hi
I have a macbook running leopard and an imac running leopard on the same network. On the time machine page it says you can back up to another mac. I want to use my imac as my hd for my macbook's time machine. How do i go about doing this?
    Thanks

On the MacBook, open a Finder window. Find the iMac listed under "Shared" in the sidebar, select it and connect to it. You may need to open the volume you intend to use for the Time Machine backup.
Open Time Machine Preferences (click and hold on the TM dock icon until the menu pops up and select it, or open System Preferences and select Time Machine. If it's off, turn it on and it should ask you which disk(volume) to use. If it doesn't, or you already have one selected, click on the Change Disk button. Select the volume on your iMac you want to use, and you're done. Use Options to exclude anything on your MacBook disk that you don't want to backup.
The first (complete) backup will take a while.

  • Time Machine Network Bug?

With a Macbook Pro, I am connected to the network using ethernet cable. I manually start a Time Machine backup. After it starts, I disconnect the ethernet cable. Instead of Time Machine continue the backup using the Wireless network, the backup stops. Everything else (Safari for example) continue to work using the Wireless network. If I start the backup again, it starts and completes on the Wireless network.
    Is this a bug?

I have another bug involving Time Machine and Spaces:
When Time Machine is creating the the initial backup, an annoying small window with the progress bar is in the desktop. If you moved to a different space just not to see it in you working space, Time Machine stops. At this point is really really ANNOYING since my backup disk is remote, the initial backup is 299 GB and at this pace it will take the entire week or more to recreate the image... Not to mention that TM is creating this initial image because the sparce image i had GOT CORRUPTED after 6 MONTHS...
Is clear that I'm really ****** off?

  • Two Mac computer in one Time Machine ? Possible?

    Hi
Does anyone know that can I back up two computers in one Time Machine External HD? I have one Imac (PPC) and one MAcbook (intel). For both of them I'd like to make one Time machine HD. Does it work like that or do I need to back up two seperate TM HD for each of my computers?
    Many thanks...

    tur,
There are multiple options for backing up 2 machines to one external drive. Remember that Time Machine is smart enough to recognize different machines and stores the backups in different folders.
1: Connect your external drive to your main machine and then use Personal File Sharing to share that drive on your network. Keep in mind sharing the drive over the network will degrade network speed while Time Machine is working (Not such a big deal if you use a wired network).
2: (The option I use) Run Time Machine on the first computer, eject it the drive, and then plug it onto the second machine and run time machine on that computer.
I use option 2 because I have a machine I use as a media center and do not need regular backups of. I only back it up when I add files.
A third option I have not had any experience with is using Apple's new Time Capsule.
I hope this answers your question.
