Time Machine no longer continuing to back up restored iMac
I just put a new hard drive in an iMac 1.83Ghz CD (early 2006), and then restored a 10.5.1 TM backup to the new drive. Then I restored some other files from an earlier TM backup date that seem to have been corrupted - possibly due to the failing drive. At this point I was able to look back through all of the previous TM backups.
My problem: when TM tried to backup the restored drive for the first time it couldn't "see" the old TM backups and thus tried to create a new TM backup from scratch. How can I get TM to continue backing up from where it left off? Thanks.
I would guess from what you say that if you go into your Time Machine disk now in Finder you will see a single backupd directory but with only backups(s) from Feb 29 on.
If so, what has happened is that after you restored your system Time Machine was unable to make sense of the changes from your previous back up. Possibly as a result of the corruption you thought your hard drive had created (or possibly because you didn't restore from the latest backup you had?). When it came to do the next back up it was unable to do an incremental and backed up the whole system again. I would guess that your backup drive didn't have enough room for that without deleting all earlier backups, which it then proceeded to do.
If all this is right, I don't think you can do anything about the lost earlier backups. The good news is that if Time Machine now seems to be working OK you are probably past the problems.

(2) version of Airdisk, Time Machine no longer backs up to original
I was playing around with airport utility for my Airport Extreme to open up a port for Air Video to work. After a few restarts, I now get a second version of my attached airdisk with a (2) after it as seen here: http://cl.ly/363F3T1Q3R38110j1h0l
I can no longer connect to the original one (without the 2) and my Time Machine won't connect because its technically a "different" drive as seen here

Is there a plist file that I can trash to hopefully rebuild that list so only one shows up and Time Machine can resume its normal back-ups? Any other suggestions? Any and all help is appreciated.I ended up answering my own question, but I thought I'd put what worked for me here in case anyone else has a similar problem.
First, in my messing around to get Air Video to work I had changed my Mac's connection from Ethernet to Wireless. Not sure if this had a large impact on the Airdisk, but it may have been the cause of it getting a different IP address because of its different connection type. I set my Mac back to Ethernet. Air Video still worked, so all was well. Now, I didn't immediately try to connect to the original Airdisk, but it may, at that point, have worked.
Second, I went into the Airport Utility and manually changed an option then changed it right back, just so the utility would ask me to update the router. It did, and when my Mac reconnected, voilá, only the original Airdisk was listed in the Shared sidebar of finder. Time Machine is backing up as we speak. -
Time machine no longer backs up. It prepares for back up OK but then fails to complete. The archive is still available. Any ideas? Thanks
Unfortunately, not much to go on here. There are any of twenty different reasons why backups are not occurring, and no shortcuts that I know of to find out why.

Is there a fix or upgrade to deal with the many problems I am experiencing since I installed Lion? I can no longer utilize Time Machine (Does not see the back-up drive); my wireless mouse does not work properly; my iMac has slowed down considerably. I am reminded of having a PC machine again. Bummer!
Either downgrade to Snow Leopard or try reinstalling Lion.
Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files. -
Time Machine: why doesn't it back up Applications?
I have nothing excluded in Time Machine Preferences.
My backup external drive failed about a year ago: I replaced it and backups continued.
Had to restore an application recently: found the applications folder in Time Machine was empty, however far back I went.
Does Time Machine know that I replaced the backup drive? If not, perhaps /applications has not been backed up since nothing has changed since I replaced the drive - ? But I have been told that the backup information is stored on the backup drive, so Time Machine should know that the drive was replaced and do a full backup as the first one - ?
If that is the problem, how do I force Time Machine to do a full backup?the last iPhone update said that it "significantly reduced" the back-up time for the iPhone, and for a while it did. I've noticed it get steadily longer and longer to where now i am having the same issue you are, it taking forever to backup even if it's just a standard sync. It's possible that the different applications that are on the phone, especially if they take a lot of memory and/or use a lot of the phone's RAM may cause the backup to take a lot longer than intended, but that's just my guess.

Time Machine no longer working after reinstalling OSX 10.5 w/TM backup
About a week ago Disc Utility told me I had serious problems with my HD structure and a reinstall was necessary. Fortunately, restoring everything using Time Machine was flawless, however Time Machine has not done a single backup since. The Backup.backupdb file is still there on the external drive, along with 6 other folders created at the time I did the reinstall (same names as the 6 inside the subfolder, system, library, users...). If I try to manually do a TM backup it tells me I don't have enough HD space as though it wants to start from scratch, when the folders are all still there from before the reinstall.
Any ideas why Time Machine no longer recognizes the files it created 2 weeks ago?I had to reinstall Leopard and restore using TM. It also worked flawless for me. When I checked to see if it was backing up again, there was nothing. I also tried to manually back and that didn't work either. I went into System Preferences, Time Machine and had to choose my TM backup drive again. Once I did that it worked perfect.

Time Machine No Longer Finds Mounted Sparseimages after upgrade to 10.6
Wondering if anyone has a solution or workaround for the following. In Leopard I had no problem having Time Machine backup my mounted sparseimage drives and would exclude the physical hard drives these were mounted on. However, since upgrading to Snow Leopard the other day, Time Machine no longer includes the content of the sparseimage drives in the backup (it is not seeing them even when they are mounted). Presents a problem as I only want Time Machine to backup the files within the sparseimage drives that have changed, rather than backing up the whole sparseimage each time. Any suggestions?

For the past several days, I have been getting this message during backups:
Time Machine could not complete the back up. The backup disk image "Volumes/Data/bhoppy2's iMac.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error-1). When I click on the 'help' icon on the message, it reverts to a blank page, and I cannot find anything online regarding the term 'sparsebundle.' In addition, I cannot access previous backups any longer.

If I update from 10.6.8 to Mavericks and I have a time machine backup, can I do a full restore back to 10.6.8 and resume as if I had never updated if there is a problem? Probably an answer I should know but I don't. Thanks in advance! (instruction suggestions welcomed)
Upgrading the OS is a system wide thing. So all users will receive the upgrade.
It should not delete files and such. However, if you have for example files made with Pages '09. Then the new Pages that comes with Mavericks will make a copy of those files so you can continue to edit them. But those new files can not be opened in Pages '09. BUT again, some people perfer Pages '09 and they use that still. Mavericks will just hide Pages '09, it's still usable in Mavericks just hidden.
To be safe, make a back up of your system before doing any major upgrade.

Is what you're saying that you only want backups in TM of the state of your Mac from January 2015 to the current date and nothing before then? I'd think the simplest solution would just be to delete in TM all the backups prior to 1/15 and then let TM do its thing. The ultimate source for all things Time Machine is here. On this page, note the comment that "Time Machine will never delete the backup copy of anything that was on the disk being backed-up at the time of any remaining backup" which I understand to mean that if you delete all the backups in the TM file prior to 1/15, any file that wasn't present on your Mac as of 1/15 will no longer be represented in the TM file. Note that the second link also has instructions for how to delete TM files.
If you were trying to accomplish something else, then as Emily Litella (Gilda Radner in SNL) used to say, "never mind." -
Time machine takes 1 Month to back up 1TB. Is that normal?
How long is Time Machine supposed to take to back up a 1 TB hard drive? It's telling me 30 days! Is that normal?
How much data is on the 1TB hard drive? Is it full? Also, what type of external drive are you using?
Regardless it def. should not take that long. Stop it, make sure all the SW is up to date and then give it another go.

Basic troubleshooting: start with a "hard reset" - hold its reset button depressed continuously, about five seconds, until your TC's LED flashes rapidly. After a moment or two it will flash amber, slowly. You will then need to reconfigure it using AirPort Utility.
This does not affect your Time Machine backups.
If its LED remains illuminated amber without blinking after several minutes, it may have a problem you will be unable to fix. In that event, try another "hard reset". -
HT3275 Time Machine doesn't see the back-up disk
Time Machine doesn't see the back-up disk after I've logged off and then back on, even though the disk is available to the iMac 24/7. Turning the disk off and then on in the current session works, but this seems to defeat the purpose of an unattended back-up disk. I can't find a setting that ensures the back-up disk is recognized after log-in or restart. Is there a solution?

It seems to have made some changes that make the disk drop out.. it does this even if you are continually connected to the TC and we don't have a solution yet.
For your login issue, is the TC using a disk password.. or are you setting it to default? Could you try just turning on the guest account in the TC to read and write access and see if this helps. Tell us how it goes.
There is another fix.. but it involves using disconnect all users from v5 airport utility.. Apple removed the function in v6.
If you are on Lion or Mountain Lion even you can install the v5 utility.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

2. Download and install unpkg.

Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool. -
after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?

As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before. -
How do I use Time Machine on my Mac to back up files stored on an AirDisk?
I have a Macbook Pro 17-inch, Mid 2009, with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I use an external HDD connected directly to my Mac via FireWire 800 for Time Machine backups. I have an external HDD connected to my Airport Extreme (Gigabit) router that I use for file storage. My iTunes library and iPhoto library are both stored on this AirDisk. Can I use Time Machine on my Mac to back up the files that I store on my AirDisk? If so, then please describe how to do so. Thank you for your assistance.
Unmount and physcially disconnect the TimeMachine drive and reboot the computer without it being connected.
Reboot the comptuer with the disk inside the machine holding the option or c key down, select the disk to boot from.
Second screen in is the installer, under the Ulitites menu is Disk Utility.
Use Disk Utility to Erase with Security option Zero all Data if your planning to wipe the drive and install 10.6
Don't do the above if your simply reinstalling only OS X 10.6 to cure a problem with it.
