Time Machine no longer opening after upgrade to 10.7

Hello All,
Quite a classic question, judging from the volume of posts regarding this topic, but could not find a step by step solution, so help would be very appreciated.
I am backing up my data using Time Machine on a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo.
It worked just fine as long as my Mac Pro was running 10.6.
While the backups still seem to happen when launched by Time Machine, i have lost the ability to open Time Machine (and get to the Star Wars interface to restaure older versions of some files) since I upgraded to 10.7.5
Time Machine works just fine for another Mac under 10.6 connected to the same Netgear NAS via the same home Ethernet switch.
I have checked that the NAS firmware is up to date (RAIDiator 4.1.12 is installed). I can see the NAS on the Netgear Frontview interface and on the finder. I can see the sparsebundle created on the NAS from the Finder.
Netgear support is unsure what to do as this looks in a way more an issue with Lion rather than a Netgear issue (it works fine with the mac running 10.6)
Any suggestion would be appreciated, I know i could always delete the non-functionning sparsebundle and try again, but that seems a bit drastic and deleting sparsebundles is not quite straightforward.

That's why I mentioned both. Sometimes installers muck up low-level settings.

  • Time Machine says Backup Delayed After Upgrading to Lion

Time Machine says Backup Delayed After Upgrading to Lion on both my Macs. It backs up fine when ever I connect to the USB drive but now seems to want to back up hourly when before weekly was OK. When it does not compleye an hourly backup it reports a delayed backup - failure on both machines. How do it revert back to it reminding me to do weekly backups?

I'm having the same issue with Time Machine on OS X Lion!
    According to this webpage:     http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/LionChanges.html
Backups (i.e., Time Machine, SD, CCC, etc.) will only save the current "Version" of files.
The above statement sounds like the issue @iJRB and myself are having after upgrading to Lion where Time Machine shows the following error message below within "System Preferences > Time Machine"
@iJRB: Is this the error message you are seeing?

  • Time Machine no longer working after reinstalling OSX 10.5 w/TM backup

About a week ago Disc Utility told me I had serious problems with my HD structure and a reinstall was necessary. Fortunately, restoring everything using Time Machine was flawless, however Time Machine has not done a single backup since. The Backup.backupdb file is still there on the external drive, along with 6 other folders created at the time I did the reinstall (same names as the 6 inside the subfolder, system, library, users...). If I try to manually do a TM backup it tells me I don't have enough HD space as though it wants to start from scratch, when the folders are all still there from before the reinstall.
Any ideas why Time Machine no longer recognizes the files it created 2 weeks ago?

I had to reinstall Leopard and restore using TM. It also worked flawless for me. When I checked to see if it was backing up again, there was nothing. I also tried to manually back and that didn't work either. I went into System Preferences, Time Machine and had to choose my TM backup drive again. Once I did that it worked perfect.

  • Time Machine no longer working after 10.5.6 update

i have a late 2008 mac book pro. the 10.5.6 update was the 1st big OS X update i did.
all went well apart from Time Machine,
1st problem Time Machine always try's to back up even when i'm not at home where my Time Capsule is.
2nd problem Time Machine cant complete a back up even thought it says its backup 10gb of 10gb is complete it never finishes the back up
any one else having the same problem. and have a fix to sort this out

I have the exact same problem since upgrading to 10.5.6. The time machine arrows start spinning, and then stop with the exclamation point. I look at the dropdown and it says "Latest Backup: Delayed"
When I open Time Machine Preferences, it tells me I have 32.2 GB of 232.7 GB available. And in latest backup, it says "Failed" with the little "i" in the circle. When I click the "i" it tells me "The backup volume could not be mounted."
When I actually look at the contents of the drive (which definitely is mounted) I see a 200GB file (the correct size) named [name of my computer]_[some serial number].sparsebundle. The stuff in brackets is replaced since I don't know if that's the sort of thing that I should post.
What seems odd (although I haven't looked at the volume enough in the past to know if it is odd), is that both the modified date and the creation date are March 27, 2008 which, I believe, is when I first started using time machine.
The only other thing on that drive is a folder, "untitled folder"
That's it. I'm not sure about whether it's trying to backup when not connected, but I think I remember that.
Do these specifics fit with what you can see about the current state of your backup?

  • HT201250 Time capsule no longer works after upgrading to Mavericks

I have upgraded to mavericks and my time capusle no longer back up. Will Apple be sending out a fix. Forums show lots of apple apologists trying various work arounds and some losing data.   When will Apple be sending out a fix.
First Mail was crashing and with the new fix finally Mail is working ... when can we expect the fix for TC and mavericks.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

  • How does time machine handle initial backup after upgrading to Yosemite?

    HI All,
I'm wondering if Time machine will create a "new" full backup of the system after I upgrade to Yosemite.
I'm trying to make sure I can backout (revert to previous backup of Mavericks) of the upgrade should I run into trouble.
    Thanks,
    Eddy817

besides restoring just one file, that is what Time machine DOES. See this article:
Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions -- 14. How do I restore my entire system?
If you are deeply concerned, you may want make a copy of your entire system before updating (Clone your old system) or Install onto a Blank drive and add your files to that.
If you make NO preparation and do not have a Backup, the only way to install a previous versions is to do so onto a Blank drive. Also, you must have PURCHASED (even for $0) a copy of Mavericks, or it will not be available for re-download.

  • External drive, Time machine don't work after upgrade

On Wed, Feb. 1 I connected my external drive, did a back-up on Time Machine, everything was fine.  Then I download the most recent update for my MacBook Pro, OS X Lion 10.7.3  On Saturday, Feb. 4,  I again connected my external drive to back-up and the icon for the external drive never showed up on the desktop and Time Machine did not automatically start.  This morning I put this question out there and it was suggested that I reinstall OS X Lion 10.7.3 (Client Combo), which is what I did tonight when I got home.  It didn't work.  The external drive is running, I clicked on Time Machine in the utilities and it says it is backing up now, but the external drive still is not on the desk top and I have at least two years of back up documents and thousands of photos stored there.  The external drive holds 1 terrabyte and I am very sure it is not full.  Time Machine is not reading all the other back-ups I have done over the past year or so.
    Please any other suggestions?

Others here wouldnt recommend it, but on a new OS install, since I have a giant pile of HD, ...i just grab another HD and create a new fresh Time Machine backup
after its complete, I take the original HD with the OLD backup and format/erase it.
Im a tad too lazy to wait, as you yourself mentioned,  1 hour for TM just to PREPARE to backup. Nope, no,...not gonna do it.
I updated 4 Macs to Mavericks and id rather make a wholly NEW Time Machine backup on another HD and erase the original.
Since I keep about 12+ redundant archives of my important data, I have no worry on earth of ever losing data.
Time machine is a backup, NOT an archive for vital data.

  • Time machine will not work after upgrade

Since I upgraded to Mavericks on Oct. 22, Time Machine will not run properly, or at all for that matter.  It tells me that it is 'Preparing Backup', but it was said that for over 4 days now.  Suggestions?

I had a strange issue with Time Machine and Mavericks. Time machine wouldn't recognise the external USB drive I was using for backups. There was nothing in the logs, no errors, the time for the backup would come along and then it would skip to the next hour with no backup being done. What I was doing was removing the drive from Time Machine Preferences and re-adding it, TM would then start a manual backup and from that point it would run fine.
I ended up doing a Disc Verify on the drive (all ok, no issues) and shut the machine down. Today I booted up and staright away the TM Icon for the drive is correct and the TM is running as it used to.
I have three macs, all with external USB drives, the other two macs have no issues with TM, only my main one. Having a look at other issues, my external drive is a Western Digital unit so maybe that has something to do with it, though it can see the drive fine from Finder.
Anyway, if you are having similar issues, just run the Disc Verify Utility (and repair if there are errors) and hopefully it'll fix up that particular issue.

  • Time Machine no longer showing after fresh install

    Right,
I decided to complete restore my Lion install as it was getting sluggish. I was running Lion before hand and my time machine would load just fine and appear on the desktop and in finder as said time machine.
Now for some reason it did not come up in my restore from time machine option when restoring and it is not even showing up as an external drive. How can I fix this? I have important files on my time machine which i need to access.
It's a usb hard drive and it worked perfectly before.
    Any Help grately appreciated!
    THANK YOU!

  • Time Machine No Longer Finds Mounted Sparseimages after upgrade to 10.6

Wondering if anyone has a solution or workaround for the following. In Leopard I had no problem having Time Machine backup my mounted sparseimage drives and would exclude the physical hard drives these were mounted on. However, since upgrading to Snow Leopard the other day, Time Machine no longer includes the content of the sparseimage drives in the backup (it is not seeing them even when they are mounted). Presents a problem as I only want Time Machine to backup the files within the sparseimage drives that have changed, rather than backing up the whole sparseimage each time. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Since I have updated to 10.6.1 (over 10.5.8), my time machine only returns error messages. I am backing up 3 computers on 2 disks via airport extreme and it worked perfectly under 10.5.8. Since I upgraded to 10.6.1, I cant mount the disk or if it does, stops after 5 gig.
With no clue as to what error messages, all we can do is tell you to Start with the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.
If that doesn't help, please start a NEW THREAD in the SNOW LEOPARD - TIME MACHINE forum, with details, including all the messages, what you've done, and the results.

    Hi,
When you start Messages fro the first time you are asked for an Apple ID
When this is verified and entered it appears in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts and is Enabled.
The App should have also picked on on those iChat Accounst you had before.
These should be Enabled if they were when you last used iChat.
Exactly which "Accounts" are logged in can be seen in Message Menu > Accounts and will include the iMessage "Account" and Bonjour.
In the Window menu you will see CMD +0 for the Messages window and CMD+1 for the "Buddies" window which is a combined list at this stage.
Go to the Preferences > General Section and Untick the "Collect all accounts into one list".
This will give you separate iChat type Buddy lists.
You can check if that account/Buddy list is set to Invisible or if in the Preferences > Accounts > Security you have settings that will block some people from seeing you as On line.
You are saying Buddies can see you as On Line which implies they are still sending to your AIM based Names (@Mac.com is a valid AIM Screen Name)
I am not sure from your post if you are trying to iMessage their email IDs thinking they are Apple IDs and that they are using Messages as well.
There is no Buddy list for iMessages side
No-one can tell you are "On Line" until they have your details in the "To" spot in Messages with the correct iMessaged contact info (iPhone Number or Apple ID)
Obviously an Apple ID can be an email or look like one.
In some cases they are also valid AIM Screen Names as well.
In the case or the @mac.com name you may have linked this Apple ID to iMessages as well.

  • Since I upgraded to Mavericks, Time Machine no longer finds the Time Capsule Disk on my network

    Hi,
Since I upgraded to Mavericks, Time Machine no longer finds the Time Capsule Disk on my network.
Five minutes before upgrading it however performed successfully a last backup.
I found several posts on this forum and proposed solutions:
    - restarted both the mac and capsule
    - deleted the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (twice rebooting in between)
    Still have the issue.

Why is Time machine backup not working after Mavericks upgrade?

I had the same problem due to the Fire Wire port.  Apple tested it told me it is OK!, I tried a new cable, and have tested both ports on my back up device.  I find it strange that as soon as I installed Mavericks.  The drive does work using USB.  It could be a coincidence, I don't absolutely know at this point, my back up drive ports could stop working, but I doubt it!
