Time Machine not backup up anything, from the very start

Hello,
I have recently purchased a 1 TB external drive for use as a backup drive. I plugged it in, reformatted it as HFS+ and set up Time Machine to use it as a backup drive.
Time Machine has supposedly been running for almost a week now, but all of the backups are emtpy - they are simply backups of "Macintosh HD" as an empty folder. Clicking "Backup now" results in a half second backup, which is supposedly successful, but which is empty.
I've turned TM off, ejected the disk, deleted the Time Machine .plist and restarted the Mac Pro and then the process of setting up Time Machine, and yet the initial backup lasts mere moments and turns out to be empty.
I've verified the startup disk and the drive being used as a backup in Disk Utility. The disk is 1 TB, empty, verified, and working. Time Machine is for some reason not. Help?

Bizarre.
About the only other things I can think of are (loooong shots, of course):
Try the Terminal command in the yellow box of #11 [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If there's any extra space on your internal HD, make a very small partition on it temporarily, copy a handful of test files to it, and see if they get backed-up. If they do, then change some things and run a second backup. See #3 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum) if by chance you don't know how to do that.
Something may be corrupted/damaged in your installation of OSX. I'd suggest downloading and installing the "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards

  • Can Time Machine NOT backup USB exFAT drives?

Hi folks.  So I partitioned my seagate freeagent drive using exFAT so I could swap it back and forth with Windows.  I went to setup time machine and I see the drive is excluded and I cannot remove it from the exclude list.  Can time machine not backup that partition type?  If not, what can I use that will be usable with both windows and os x and allow me to back it up with Time Machine?  Thanks.

For fat or ntfs, you have to use something like Winclone to clone those partitions as a backup, but I have not tested winclone in Lion to see if it still works

  • Time Machine says backup is larger then the actual disk

I recently had a HD die, I replaced it and restored from my TM back up. I then formatted the TM drive and am now trying to do a full back up however when I do I get an error saying that the back up size is 525GB but my HD is only a 500GB drive of which only 450GB are used.
I ran disk warrior on my main HD, ran disk utility to fix the disk and permissions. I formatted the TM drive and now I'm zeroing out the TM drive (hopefully that will work)
Anyone have any ideas why it would be reading the back up size wrong?
    Thanks!

That's correct, as odd as it may seem.
Time Machine adds 20% to the estimated size of the backup, for workspace on the backup disk. That's usually not a problem, because a Time Machine disk should be much larger than the data it's backing-up; otherwise, there isn't enough room to keep old backups.
It varies greatly, of course, depending on how you use your Mac, but as a general rule, TM needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you.
Short-term, you can "squeeze" a backup onto the disk by excluding something large (so the estimate is under about 410 GB) and run a backup. Then remove the exclusion and run another. Since the second backup will be much smaller, 20% of it will be much smaller, too, so it should fit.
Longer-term, you need a much larger HD; at least 1 TB.

  • Migration Assistant from Time Machine not working, Migration Assistant from Time Machine not working

    Hello,
A friend of mine recently bought a new Macbook Pro.  I believe it is a 2.8 Ghz i7 model.
Anyway, they wanted to transfer all of their stuff from a 5 year old Macbook (running Snow Leopard) to their new Macbook Pro (running Lion) and they asked me for help.  I suggested they run Migration Assistant from a Time Machine backup.  They did that last night and everything ran fine until the very end, when they got this error message "Superdrive firmware Update 2.1 is not compatible with this version of Mac OS X."  Also, it appears that nothing had been transfered.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Thanks a lot both. The thing was that I couldn't find any DVDs that belonged to my new computer, so I just used my old Leopard DVD thinking that it didn't matter which one I used anyway. When you said it did
matter, however, I looked a little closer and found two DVDs in my new computer's box. I'm doing a clean installation as we speak.
    Thank you for your help!

  • Does Time machine not backup iCal data?

My MacBook Pro battery charger has failed, so I did a latest Time-Machine backup, and then connected the backup drive to my Mac Mini.
Imagine my delight when I found that the backup disk, with ten backups on it, contains none of the iCal filels, e.g. Home.ics or Work.ics
What am I supposed to do?

    Hi John,
    Thanks again for your thoughts.
Once again, this seems to behave in an anomalous way; the heading "Original:' doesn't appear in the 'More info' box.  I made an alias of a file taken at random on the Mini drive, and sure enough there, in the 'More info' was the 'Original:' heading followed by the address of the file for which I'd just made the alias.  The icon for the alias has a little arrow pointing North-east, just like the one in my backup file.
I don't know whether it may be indicative, but the headings in the 'Calendars Info panel are:
    Kind: Alias
Size: 4 KB on disk (464 bytes)
    Where: /Volumes/My Passport/Backups.backupdb/User's MacBook Pro/2011-05-03-103202/Macintosh HD/Users/tonyjackson/Library
    Created: Thursday 9 September 20010 22:58
    Modified: Thursday 9 September 20010 22:58
This in the backup folder called:
    2011-05-03-103202
    Which seems a bit peculiar?
    Best regards, Tony J.

  • Trying to set up time capsule with airport exteme. Apple advises to use manuel setup and click on Advanced.  Then enter mobileme ID. I did this but Time Machine doesn't display anything on the capsule window.

Can't set up my time capsule on Airport Extreme (updated).  Apple instructions are to use manual set up.  Click on Advanced tab.  Click on Mobileme and enter Mobileme ID and password.  I did this.  But Time Machine window is blank.  Tryed to click on update window after entering Mobileme ID but Airport does not respond (turn of then on)

I have been experiencing some networking problems
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I have the latest Time Capsule ("TC"), an old Airport Extreme Base Station ("AEBS") bought in 2007 and 2 Airport Expresses, one bought in 3 months ago ("AE-Alpha") and the other bought back in 2007 ("AE-Beta"). All of them have been updated with the latest firmware.
Based on those dates, the AirPort Extreme is probably flat (as opposed to dome-shaped), making it 802.11n-capable. The Newer AirPort Express is probably an 802.11n-capable model A1264, while the older one is probably a model A1084 or A1088.
I use {the TC's} DHCP function ... to avoid unauthorized use.
This a discussion for another thread, but that's not what DHCP is for.
The wireless setting for it is to participate as WDS Main, but after reading various posts, it seems WDS is a bad idea
With that older AirPort Express you're stuck with WDS unless you decide to replace it with a newer model.
The AEBS is currently setup as being a WDS Relay at the moment
Why a relay? That's only needed if there's another base station "beyond" it that is configured to depend on it.
Since the AEBS is connected to the TC via Ethernet, you should probably configure it as a "roaming network":
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2273124
{The AE-Alpha} connects fine as WDS remote at the moment
I don't have any experience with mixed WDS and non-WDS networks, but since it's 802.11n-capable, you may be able to configure it to "extend" the network of the TC rather than as WDS. Look for a setting on the TC to "Allow this network to be extended".
    Physical location:
AEBS in one end, TC and AE-Alpha in the middle while AE-Beta on the other end.
A device such as "AE-Beta" that's supposed to extend a network shouldn't be "at the end" but should be half way between the central base station and the clients that need an extended network.

  • I updated FCPX to 10.9 after I had updated my os to 10.9.1. And the result is that FCPx can no longer read LaCie external hard drive where all the projects and events are stored. The program simply crashes every time I try to read anything from the LaCie.

Could anyone tell me what to do to solve the problem. I updated FCPX to 10.9 and the program keeps on crash every time I try to read files stored in my LaCie hard drive. And the program also keeps on crash every time I try to import files from my SDXC cards.

I have solved the problem. Once the update is done, you need to launch FCPX, and go to File, then "update all events and projects". It will solve the problem and everything works fine.

  • Time Machine scheduled backup that is twice the size of the data on my hard drive?

    Hi,
I recently wiped my old TM (archived it to another drive) and want to start fresh
Upon connecting to TM for the first time, it attempts to perform a 134GB backup
The funny thing is that I am only using 63.78GB on my hard drive
I have it configured as RAID 1 (i.e., mirrored), could this be the cause? I had assumed that it would just back it up once, and that the external would worry about the mirroring... But can't think of any other reason for this at the moment.
    Thanks

On a more detailed examination of what was actually happening on my machine, and then posting a more specific thread, I found the answer!
Disk Utility says I am using 131gb of SSD; Finder says I am using 38gb?
Thanks for tracking with me on this!

  • Time machine not performing housekeeping - previous days' & weeks' multiple backups remaining

As you can see from this image, time machine stopped cleaning backups from previous days and weeks.
A bit of background, this is a networked backup for a MacBook Pro. (Thus, the backups only happen when I'm at home on my home network.)  The MBP: OS 10.8.4 2.4 GHz, 8 Gb: 750 Gb drive, currently using 125 Gb - 625 Gb free.
The time machine "drive" is a 350 Gb partition on a 1 Tb drive, 75 Gb free; the other parition has the time machine backup for another MBP, also OS X 10.8.4; this problem does not occur on that time machine partition with that computer.  The problem started on 5/12 with previous days multiple entries not being deleted. (The timing does not seem to align with a software update: 10.8.3 on 3/25 and 10.8.4 on 6/6.)
One more thing, backups take much longer (around 25 minutes for just a few Mbs) than they do on the other MBP which uses the other partition. The other MBP has many more files and folders and the .sparsebundle is bigger (252 Gb).
I have read through Pondini's wonderfully thorough website on time machine (pondini.org) and looked through discussions here. All seem to focus on ways in which time machine prunes old backups to make space. In my case, space is not (yet) a problem, but I am concerned that these problems indicate time machine is not working properly and that there may be other problems.

I gave it a try last night. For the record it is item A4 at the pondini.org site. The result:
    - the back up was 1.43 Gb (rather large considering that the only activity on the MBP since the previous backup had been to read mail).
    - no change to the list of previous back up entries and the mulitple backups from the last few days were not pruned (that is, the problem perists).
    - I looked at the backups using the Time Machine interface and only the ones snce removing the .plst are visible. (All of the prior backups are still visible using the finder interface looking at the mounted virtual disk.)

  • Time machine back-up has nothing in the files!!!

My iMac 20 inch has just given up the ghost after 3 years and can't be repaired. I bought a new 24 inch iMac and planned to restore my files using the Time Machine back up I had from the old iMac. I have connected the hard drive to Airport Extreme and can see the Time Machine backups but the folders all seem to be aliases with nothing in them. What's happened and can I do anything about it?

When you connect the drive to an Airport Extreme's USB port then you need to enable File Sharing or the drive will not be accessible to any computer using the router. Furthermore, using the drive in this way is not the same as having the drive connected directly to a computer. Using the AEBS is the same as using any NAS which means TM employs a different method of storing files. TM would be looking for a sparsebundle disc image file in which the actual files are stored. What you see in the TM backup folder are simply Unix hard links (a type of alias) to the actual data stored in the sparsebundle.
If you used this drive connected to the AEBS, then TM will need to locate the sparsebundle. If it's gone or damaged, then the backup is lost.

  • Time machine email backup showing incorrect emails

I have been using time machine to backup my emails. The great thing about time machine is that I could always go back in time and restore yesterdays emails after I had just deleted them by accident. Since I upgraded to Yosemite I notice that in time machine my yesterdays inbox not only contains yesterdays emails, but many more emails that I have moved or deleted already. My mailboxes are imap mailboxes, but all emails are also stored on my macbook air. Does anyone know how to get the old behaviour back, as before Yosemite? Or is this a confirmed bug? Any info will be much appreciated.

Inside the V2 folder are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use.
From the Mail menu bar, select
    File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Import from the mailboxes in the restored folder. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest.

  • Can't Find Slideshows within Time Machine iPhoto Backup

I have spent quite a lot of time setting up a slideshow with Ken Burns effects and added music. Large slideshow with 367 photos, went to send it to iDVD and it doesn't work...can't export it as it seems it's too large but that is another story (I think a bug with iPhoto 09)...even after the update! Anyway...someone suggested splitting the slideshow up to export it to see if that worked. I did that and the two new parts of the slideshow no longer have the Ken Burns effect applied. My stupid fault, but I already deleted the photos that weren't required from the original slideshow and the Undo worked once but then greyed out. I'm guessing it must have saved in the middle...typical! So...having backed up with Time Machine the night before I plugged in the drive and navigated to iPhoto from yesterday. Photos all there but no Slideshow in the left hand pane. Maybe I'm missing something or does Time Machine not backup slideshows that have not been exported?
    Thanks

Solved, restored the iPhoto Library from the finder and it worked!

  • Time Machine deleting backups from several months ago (but not the oldest)?

During its "Cleanup" phase, Time Machine has recently been deleting backups from several months ago—even though these aren't the oldest backups, and my backup drive isn't full.
My backups go back to January 2012, yet just today, Time Machine deleted backups from May 21, June 11, July 2, and July 23 (all in 2012). And plus, my Time Machine drive still has 200 GB free.
Why's it doing this? Shouldn't it just either delete my backups from January 2012 first (if it needs the space), or just delete the expired backups in the past 24 hours or 30 days (based on its normal rules)?

See Pondini's TM FAQs for starters.
