Time Machine not completing backup to Time Capsule
MY OS: 10.8.2
My backups to the Time Capsule are interrupted with this message:
Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to xxxxx's Time Capsule.
The backup disk image "/Volumes/xxxx's Data/My MacBook Pro (2).sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
Can someone tell me what I can do to fix this?
Thanks

I have in a previous discussion been talking about errors with my Time Machine backup. The errors were with a problem with Indexing a file, it fails and stops the whole backup. Each time it attemps another backup, it fills my ".inProgress" package with a (nearly) whole backup, filling my Time Machine hard drive, and thus errasing my previous good backups. The error occurs after about 95% completion.
In my last post of a similar disscussion, the problem was indexing the Preference Pane files and this caused the whole backup to fail. This was my last post there: (below in some additional info of my situation)
I did exclude the MobileMe.prefPane. And I got:

This time it was the Mouse.prefPane that caused the error. I'd like to exclude the entire PreferencePanes directory.
This was my error message this time:
I just realized this was on my small Developers partition. Perhaps there is an error with the build, OR an error with the initial restore. I'd like to perhaps exclude the entire /Volumes/Mac OS Lion GM. I expect that Time Machine is working fine with my main partition and the error happens when it's almost done with the Mac OS Lion GM partition.
The problem now is that I only have 265 GB of 3 TB available on my Time Machine HDD. If attempt another backup, it'll surely erase about 410 GB of my past saved backups. I've already lost 6 months, and I only have two months left of backups. I need to erase the ".inProgress" package again. That'll take time, and it's impossible to do from this main partition, even at root access. This ".inProgress" has a total of two (nearly) full backups; it didn't cleanup the first full backup attempt while starting the second, perhaps it would have had it finished. But I fear even if I exclude the whole "Mac OS Lion GM" partition, It'll create a third full backup before cleanup and erase ~400 GB of previous good backups. Then, I'll have a total of 4 (nearly) full backups! 3 TB is just enough without any past backups.
Maybe I'll just copy my documentations of my 'errasing the ".inProgress" package' last time (from the Mac OS Lion GM partition) and do a full restore of just that partition. Thus erasing the errors all together. If it doesn't fix the errors then this could be a bug in the build that doesn't allow Time Machine to work. I've always included this partition in Time Machine before, even with other Lion builds, so I suspect that it was an error in the initial restore. (I may be answering my own questions, and that the inital restore (of the small partition) is the problem, and I just need to re-restore the small partition)
Again, I'm going to have to erase the ".inProgress" file to regain 1.53 TB of space before proceeding.
Also, I gave myself permission to read the ".Backup.345781513.887697.log", the log that was created last night when I first started Time Machine this last time. It was interesting, but didn't show the error I could see from the console.
Right now, mds and mdworker appear to be going crazy even after I just now turned off Time Machine. I think I'll let it go for the rest of the night. Then I'll work on erasing the ".inProgress" package from the other partition boot up.
That was my entire last post. To add some information, I have two OS X partitons, both Mac OS X Lion. One is my large main partition, the other is one I don't mind testing with. I recently replaced my internal hard drive in my iMac and restored from Time Machine both partitions. This appeared to go smoothly. But I have yet to create a single successful Time Machine backup since. At first it was doing a Full Backup, which I didn't like, but now it just aborts around 95% completion. Each, time, it tries it fills the Time Machine hard drive with duplicate (nearly) full backups errasing my older good backups. I would like to erase the ".inProgress" file to save space.
My main question in this new discussion is does anyone know of a good way of erasing the ".inProgress" file? This is so I can preseerve my previous backups. ACLs and other permissions seem to make it impossible to erase from this startup partition, the one I'm running Time Machine from. Even at root level, if I give myself permission to change permissions or delete a file, it'll say Operation not Permitted instead of Permission Denied. I have been able to delete this ".inProgress" package before when booting from the other partition, but with great difficulty. I have had much help from another Member in this Support Community when it comes to solving my Time Machine problems. I think I have found the problem (indexing files in my small OS X partition), as stated in my copy& pasted post above, but I really need to delete this inProgress package first to save space before continuing!Pondini wrote:

Now I'll have to fix the small partition? How's the best way to do this? There could be thousands of files that won't index fine.
See if there's anything you haven't done, that applies, in the pink box of #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting
Otherwise, since most (or all?) of the indexing errors are in OSX, you might want to just reinstall it. Something may have gone wrong sometime, that damaged those files.
I reviewed #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting and I have already done most of those things. I have just learned something new though:
When I included my Main OS X partition again, I got an indexing error for the first time for that partition. I might be interesting to note that the _spotlight process was running, and it's running again (the magnifying glass has a dot and it generically says "Indexing Tom's iMac"). mdworker, mds and backupd processes really are working hard, one moment they used over 500% of my CPU. It's nice to know for once quad core is good for something other than video encoding. (Now if they could just get the Finder to do more than 100.1%, only 1 thread is doing 100%, I'd like to see file size calculations 8 times quicker!)
I never got an indexing error once in the past 2 weeks for that large Mac OS X v10.7.2 main volume, and it had appeared to finish that partition backup before running into problems with my smaller test partition. Also, I had just updated the smaller test partition with a later build of Mac OS X. But It appears that the beta builds are clearly not the problem. I thought I could just restore again (from the December 4th backup) the small partition and both would be fine.
I'll finish reviewing all the suggestions on Time Machine - Troubleshooting and go from there. Hopefully, the _spotlight indexing simutaniously was the only problem. It's strange that the indexing hasn't happened since the original restore last week untill I finally got a good clean complete partial Time Machine backup. Why would the first Time Machine backup trigger indexing again?
For now, I'm going to exclude the Main Partition again, and let another good backup run. And try your suggestions. (And wait till mds, mdworker, etc. to finish!)
I have the logs of the first two sucsessful backups and the last two failed backups from the last 3 hours, if that would help.? -

Time Machine Not Compacting SparseBundle on Time Capsule
Hi
I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and have a time capsule to hold my iTunes Library and act as my Time Machine repository.
I'm experiencing the problem where Time Machine has filled up my 1TB Time Capsule, and will not back up any more.
I can see that Time Machine has tried to delete some old backups in order to create space - in fact it's deleted ALL my old back ups bar one, probably due to the fact that in deleting each old back up has not released any more space on the Time Capsule as the Sparse Bundle is still massive.
I have done some research and can see that other people were having this issue back in 2008 - so I thought it would have been resolved by now! I thought Time Machine was supposed to compact the sparse bundle image once it had deleted an image these days - but it doesn't seem to have happened.
Can someone tell me if there is some setting I need to select?
I might as well delete the current sparsebundle and just start again - so I don't want to find myself in the same situation in X months time!
Many thanks

I can't get back to some of the earlier logs as the widget crashes and takes down the whole dashboard with it! However I think I remember seeing some messages that stated that it couldn't compact the drive as it was already mounted.
I do use the drive to store my iTunes library as well - so perhaps I had mounted the drive when it ran out of space, and hence it's decision to try and remove all the previous backups.
Perhaps this is a good time to think about creating a disk image on the TC for TM to use so I can keep the backups separate from the other data.
Should I create a disk image and store all the iTunes data in it and let TM use the standard TC or vice versa and create an image for TM to use and then use the native TC for data - or does it not make any difference at all?
Cheers for your help

Time machine not making backup
My time machine has been having troubles lately. Then it seemed to work, but now it hasn't done a backup for 2 days. I just saw it going and it was totally up a bunch of items (on the order of 60,000 items). But it didn't go. The buddy reported this:

Does that mean that spotlight is trying to index the sparsebundle? Is there a way to fix that? -
Time Machine does not complete backup to Time Capsule
Within the past few days my iMac will not complete a backup to my Time Capsule. The two other computers connected to the Time Capsule appear to be backing up but they size of the backup is smaller. The Time Machine starts but then stops after 10 or so minutes. Also, the size of the to backup is ver large, and I have not added that much to my files since the last complete backup.
Here is what I tried:
1. Deleting the com/apple/Timecapsule.plist file and restarting the Time Capsule.
2. turning off WIFI and connecting to an ethernet cable
3. Verifying the disk (when connected to with the ethernet cable)
Nothing worked although Deleting the com/apple/Timecapsule.plist file and restarting the Time Capsule it got about 50% through before crapping out.
Appreciate any ideas.
ThanksWhat OS is the computer running? Expect issues with Yosemite.. it is just not that reliable.
How much space does it require and how much is available on the TC?
What speed is the backup doing? If it is super slow it can trip out.
You did the right things, using ethernet and verifying the old backup.. But if you upgraded to Yosemite (upgraded??) then I strongly recommend you start a completely new backup.
Did you load the widget so you can actually check the log info.. to find out why TM stopped??

I did a last "Back Up Now" (around 5 PM) before beginning with the restore but when I go to start the restore it asks me to choose the last "complete" backup, and that was at 9 AM in the morning.
Am I right in assuming if I choose this "last complete backup" from 9 AM it won't restore all the files that have been edited between 9 AM and 5 PM?
If so, how do I get it create a complete backup, without doing a completely new (and time-consuming) complete backup?I've seen this too. I'm not sure how to force a full backup. you could wait a couple of TM cycles and see if the backup you want becomes available on the list of full backups. You can also try forcing deep traversal (this will make backup time much longer but it's nowhere near as long as a complete new backup). To do that reboot in safe mode (hold shift at the chime till you see the login window). reboot normally and start a backup. It should do a deep traversal and maybe that will count as a complete backup.

Time Machine not completely deleting all backups.
When I restore Time Machine it doesn't seem to erase everything. It states that there is 1.43 TB left when there should be 2 TB left. Any way to resolve this?
See Pondini's TM FAQs, for starters.

Time machine not completely backing up certain folders
Has anyone run into a problem with their Time Machine continually neglecting to backup one or two of their folders? I know some people have problems with TM not backing up items on their desktop, but my desktop data is fine. There are just two folders (as far as I know) that TM refuses to back up (unless there are new items, then it will backup only those items). One is my 'documents' folder. And another folder I created called 'OS media'.
About my setup:
I recently set up Time Machine with my Macbook Pro (running Mavericks). TM is backing up the internal SSD along with an external hard drive that is always attached via USB. The drive they are being backed up onto is a Western Digital My Book Live via wifi--which I know is not advised as it is not officially approved by Apple, but I'm hoping that's not the cause of this particular problem. Because otherwise the MBL has been working pretty well.
More details:
Both of the problem folders happen to be from the external hard drive (not internal SSD), and in the first tier of folders. But the other folders on that tier (about five other folders) are fully entact in TM, so I don't think it's an issue with the external HD. And the missing files are not a certain file type, they are all the sub-folders and files under the problem folders.
I went into the Western Digital (Time Machine) drive itself via Finder and verified that the files are indeed missing, so it wasn't a lag issue. And I have nothing excluded from backups in TM preferences.
I noticed that within those two problem folders, if any file was modified or created within that folder since my initial TM full backup (about two weeks ago), even if it was just a modified .ds_store file, TM would begin to include that file in the backup. This make me guess the problem was something that happened during the initial TM backup. The folders were somehow missed, and subsequent TM incremental backups aren't able to detect that it's missing. So unless anyone has any other suggestions, I'm just going to try to redo a full backup. I'm reluctant though, because it's going to take about two days to complete, and I really have no idea if it's even going to help.
And I don't know if this is related, but when I'm in Time Machine and I do a search for any of my files, I always get zero results.
Important sidenote:
While browsing my folders in Time Machine (Star Wars view), I found that clicking on an alias to a folder would open up that folder, but it didn't show the contents of the folder as they were in that particular backup version; instead, it showed the contents of that folder as they appeared in my computer currently. In other words, it appeared that I was looking at an old backup version of the folder, but it was actually the present time folder. This could easily mislead someone into thinking that their current data is backed up, when it is not.oregonjoe wrote:
Am I to understand people should not post questions that involve any 3rd party products that are not officially supported by Apple?
No, but you must understand that Time Machine does not support the configuration you are using.
The exhaustive list of devices supported by Time Machine amounts to the following:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard disk (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to a Time Capsule (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to an AirPort Extreme (current model only)
A hard disk drive directly connected either to the source Mac, or a Mac on your local network.
That is all.
Use whatever backup device you want, but you should be aware that this site is full of reports of misery from hapless individuals who had been using third party NAS devices for Time Machine backups, only to find that they were incomplete, corrupted, or useless in the dire circumstances in which they were required. Apple won't care if you lose your data while using a Time Machine configuration specifically excluded from their technical support documents. -
Time Machine not showing backups
Time Machine stopped backing up earlier this month and I have done numerous things to get backups again. Yesterday after upgrading memory on my iMac, not as a fix for Time Machine, I restarted Time Machine and it appeared to be backing up just fine. This morning when I looked at Time Machine preferences it does not display oldest or latest backup and when I open disk it shows 2015-01-24-083208.inProgress and if you look inside package it appears to have backups all the way back to when I started Time Machine back up. I have reformatted the drive during the process of trying to get backups working again and run disk utility and drive checks out fine. When it does a backup it shows progress bar and when complete tells when next backup is. I browsed through the folders in the 2015-01-24-083208.inProgress package and they do appear to be complete backups.

Time machine not connecting with new time capsule
Will someone please help? I have just recently joined the MAC family and purchased a new Macbook along with a new time capsule. It took unbelievably long to get things running (ie wireless access with 2 other PC based desktops and a PC laptop and shared network printing with an USB connected printer to the time capsule)- I thought macs were supposed to be easy?! Anyways, the only thing that I cannot figure out is how to properly set up time machine. I follow the instructions and turn time machine on, choose my backup disc (which is the time capsule), but when I click "use for backup", I keep getting the "connection failed- server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again" What am I supposed to do now? What is there to check when all of the other computers are able to access the internet (including the Macbook) and wirelessly print. The stupid timecapsule router function is working but the backup portion of it is not???!!!! Please help someone who is about to give the mac and the time capsule to the first person walking down the street - it has been a frustrating 2 days.
First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click
Renew DHCP lease.
Try again to back up.
If you still can't, open the Time Machine preference pane and delete the TC from the list of backup destinations. You may have to unlock the settings by clicking the lock icon in order to do this. Then add it back. -
Time Machine Not Completing First Back Up
I know there are many posts on unsuccessful Time Machine backups but I can't find one that matches this: I have a 250GB external hard drive which has been formatted correctly and the size of my mac needing backup is around 125GB. I have tried to back up a couple of times using Time Machine but every time I come back to my machine (after a few hours) it says that it needs 125GB to back up and only 100 or so are available. In between trying these backups, I have reformatted the external hard drive; there is nothing else on it and it's not partitioned. And there are no previous Time Machine backups on there; it just cannot complete the first. It's behaving as if there is already one backup on the drive and it's trying to do another (at least that's my logic). Any advice greatly appreciated.
Another one.
I had also problems with time machine. Than I recognized that spotlight tried to index the backup and if both worked together (spotlight indexing and time machine backup) the process was interrupted and my system crashed or was hanging. Therefore I added my backup hd to the volumes for spotlight not to index, and the problem was gone. I recommend to add the backup volume to the ones not to be indexed by spotlight.

Time machine cannot complete backups - please help
I hope somebody can help me - my Time Machine has been unable to complete backups for about six weeks or so.
Having read some useful information on the support forums yesterday, I verified both my internal HD and my external disk. The external disk appears fine, yesterday my internal disc needed some 'minor repairs'. I booted from the Leopard disk, but could not find where to repair disk so simply verified disk again and it was apparently fine.
I have verified both disks today and they are again fine. However when I try to back up I get this message:

Time Machine Won't Backup to Time Capsule Error 22
Every time I click "Back up now" on my MacBook, after saying "Making Backup Disk Available" for 2-3 minutes it gives me error 22. I finally looked up in the console what was going on and this is what it says...
7/8/10 10:32:08 PM com.apple.backupd[3865] Starting standard backup
7/8/10 10:32:08 PM com.apple.backupd[3865] Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://Stephen%[email protected]/Time%20Capsule
7/8/10 10:36:31 PM com.apple.backupd[3865] NetAuthConnectToServerSync failed with error: 2 for url: afp://Stephen%[email protected]/Time%20Capsule
7/8/10 10:36:36 PM com.apple.backupd[3865] Backup failed with error: 19
I have no idea what it is saying but has something to do with NetAuthConnectToServerSync. I also noticed that it says error 2 and error 19 in the console and never anything about error 22 which it keeps giving me after trying to back up.
Please help, I have not been able to back up my Mac for months now.
I have tried everything, erasing the time capsule disk 5 times now, reset the settings on the time capsule to default and then reset it up again, tried reinstalling Snow Leopard on my mac 3 times now, rebooted my mac, rebooted my time capsule. Nothing works. One time I got it to start backing up but stopped at about 700mb and stopped and gave me error 22.
Thanks in advance!
