Time machine not connecting to Back up Server

If I try to connect the the Time Capsule (which I haven't done in a couple of months) the connection the the Server just hangs.....I have search forums and found info on resetting, but nothing else seems to be a problem - internet connection is OK etcetc is there a way to trouble shoot ? FYI I just sorted out a disk image problem and did a disk repair as I inadvertedly had a number of applications open and the computer was struggliing to keep up)
Any help input apprecaited.
Thanks

So, I opened up my configurator and this is the window:
As I wrote into the picture, the host name I have has to be put into the first section? The MAC address is the one of the WiFi connection (as I'm using it), if not which one?. My hostname is "MacBook-Pro-di-Massimiliano-Berardi.local" is ok or I have to change it for some reason (also, do I have to keep the *.local?).
Thanks in advance.

  • Time machine not connecting with new time capsule

Will someone please help? I have just recently joined the MAC family and purchased a new Macbook along with a new time capsule. It took unbelievably long to get things running (ie wireless access with 2 other PC based desktops and a PC laptop and shared network printing with an USB connected printer to the time capsule)- I thought macs were supposed to be easy?! Anyways, the only thing that I cannot figure out is how to properly set up time machine. I follow the instructions and turn time machine on, choose my backup disc (which is the time capsule), but when I click "use for backup", I keep getting the "connection failed- server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again" What am I supposed to do now? What is there to check when all of the other computers are able to access the internet (including the Macbook) and wirelessly print. The stupid timecapsule router function is working but the backup portion of it is not???!!!! Please help someone who is about to give the mac and the time capsule to the first person walking down the street - it has been a frustrating 2 days.

First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click
              Renew DHCP lease.
    Try again to back up.
If you still can't, open the Time Machine preference pane and delete the TC from the list of backup destinations. You may have to unlock the settings by clicking the lock icon in order to do this. Then add it back.

  • Time Machine not recognizing seagate back up plus external hard drive

Please somebody save me!!! My computer was running really slow and decided to take in to the Apple store.  They recommended that i needed a new a hard drive.  I've beeen using the Seagate back up plus model srd0sd0 3tb drive and before i disconnected the drive i checked time machine and it said it was backed up within the last 15 minutes.  disconnected and went to the store.  At the apple store i told them to transfer over everything from the hard drive to the new one even though i backed it up.  Well they didnt (waiting to see if they can get the drive back) they figured it was back up and so did I.  Well i've tried connecting the seagate to my imac and it does not recognize the external drive.  i have 10.6.8 snow leopard and tried to reboot it using the install disk. that didnt work.  was on the phone with apple support and they could not get it to recognize the drive.  tried connecting the drive to a windows laptop and it did not recognize it either.  the drive powers on and we are wondering if it's the usb card that's faulty (heading to the store to get a new one) I hope that's it but i'm looking ahead and seeing what other ways i can get it to work.  He mentioned that i could replace the outer casing not sure how that works.  I did notice that the bottom of the seagate where the usb connects detaches.  could that be replace?  just trying to find out how to save my drive.  I have all of my family photos, videos etc.  you know the priceless memories.  sorry for the long message. just trying to provide as much info as possible.  Thanks in advance!

The genuis was probably referring to a hard disk enclosure…
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/MISC/3.5USB2ENCL/
Enclosures can fail, but the disk can be OK. It is usually possible to take the disk out and fit it into another case.
I'd suggest you take the disk, it's power supply & the USB cable with you the genius may be willing check it on another Mac it could be as simple as a bad cable. Swapping the disk can be delicate, have someone help you if you don't know how to use a screwdriver. Sometimes you can find a guide on the internet if you search for the model and 'take apart', most are simple enough not to need it.
I can't see how the iMac's USB card would effect a Windows laptop, has the Windows laptop ever shown the contents of the TM disk? I don't think they allow Apple formatted disks to mount without extra software?
Good luck with the Store, let us know if they resolve it for you.

  • Time Machine Not Completing First Back Up

I know there are many posts on unsuccessful Time Machine backups but I can't find one that matches this: I have a 250GB external hard drive which has been formatted correctly and the size of my mac needing backup is around 125GB. I have tried to back up a couple of times using Time Machine but every time I come back to my machine (after a few hours) it says that it needs 125GB to back up and only 100 or so are available. In between trying these backups, I have reformatted the external hard drive; there is nothing else on it and it's not partitioned. And there are no previous Time Machine backups on there; it just cannot complete the first. It's behaving as if there is already one backup on the drive and it's trying to do another (at least that's my logic). Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Another one.
I had also problems with time machine. Than I recognized that spotlight tried to index the backup and if both worked together (spotlight indexing and time machine backup) the process was interrupted and my system crashed or was hanging. Therefore I added my backup hd to the volumes for spotlight not to index, and the problem was gone. I recommend to add the backup volume to the ones not to be indexed by spotlight.

  • Time Machine not deleting old back ups?

    I keep getting the error
"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires...."
I use the same 500GB volume for backups all day, every day. I thought the program was supposed to automatically delete old back ups to make room? I do not see any additional settings to confirm this but if you manually delete back up files, it really kind of screws things up. I see back ups that are 4-6 weeks old on the back up volume so there are plenty it could delete. Has anyone else seen this and how do you resolve this problem?
    TIA

Do you mean via the Finder? If so, yes, it does.
If you have deleted any this way, do the following:
    1. Turn TM Off.
    2. Use Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to do a +Repair Disk+ (not permissions) on your TM drive. If it finds errors that it can't fix, try again until it does or you get the exact same results. If they can't be fixed, stop here and post back with the results.
Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).
Also, is there other data on your TM drive? If so, is it in the same partition as TM's backups?

  • Time machine not connecting to internet

My Time Capsule is not able to connect to the internet. When I plug my MACbook directly to the cable modem it works fine.

I have the same problem as GE8.
Flrst I have my Time Capsule in use for about one year, its work perfect. But suddenly one day in desember -13 I don´t could use AirPlay to stream music, and afterwords I could not connect to internet with TC.
I can use my old Linksys Router. It can connect to internet threw my internet modem (Cisco EPC3925) and also to my MacBook Pro (Retina) with the latest OS X from Apple, OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
I have sent in my TC to service after two (2) hours phone service with Apple consulent. First I get the same TC back with notice that everything is OK. It wasn´t, and I sent it in again. Now I have get a new TC and have still the same problem. When I connect TC to my internet modem (as work OK with my Linksys router) the status light flashing amber,- it can´t establish a connect to the network or the internet, or is encountering a problem...
The Apple support couldn´t find any problem after two (2) hours tlf.support. They said that the problem must have something with the hardware to do. But now I have try different times and anything works with TC...
    What can I do...?

  • Synol DSM 5.0 Time Machine not Connecting

Time Machine working on 2013 iMac with DS213j NAS and DSM 5.0, but 2007 iMac only connected to Time Machine once, and fails now.
    24-inch Mid 2007 -  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo,  Memory  3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
DS213j 4tb Raid - one iMac (2013) using NAS as Time Machine backup and works fine, mid 2007 Time Machine starts to connect to the Time Machine share and "prepares" but never completes task.  So one iMac works fine, and I did somehow get the 2007 to backup once on the NAS, but fails now no matter what I do.

Solution which worked for me is at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1809841&tstart=0
I have to start a new backup.
Unfortunately "old" sparsebundle become obsolete, as a new name means new full back up.
Trash it or archive it (to external USB connected to Time Capsule using AirPort Utility ).
    Now everything is working well.

  • How to migrate my past user data via time machine (not the latest back up)

Does anyone know how do i migrate my past data from time machine. I read the step posted on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413 but does it migrate the latest back up?
How can i migrate a older time stamp data?
    Thanks.

If you want to restore the entire computer using a backup other than the most recent you'll need to use your computer's restore DVD (the grey one) or your commercial Leapard DVD to boot the computer. Then look under the utilities menu for Restore. Both Migrate and Setup Assistant automatically select the most recent TimeMachine backup.
Pondini's Time Machine site has everything you've always needed to know about TimeMachine but didn't know you should ask. You might want to take a look before you proceed.

well, that says it all, doesn't it ?
TM does not support all NAS drives. more information in Pondini's user tip: http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/2.html.

  • Lost iPhoto. How do I get it back. The Time machine not far enough back

Installed iLife 11 so I could use the IDVD program. This may be coincidence, but I have lost the IPhoto program. The library seems intact, its the program itself. How do I get it back?

Go to the Mac App Store.
    Look on the Purchases page
See if there is a version of iPhoto for you there, waiting to be downloaded.

  • Can Time Machine be used to back up my server?

I've got 10.6 Server running on an Xserve.  I was told that Time Machine can't be used on a Server, but I do have the TM icon on my dock. Does TM work with server or not - are its backups flawed in some way for Server?

    Michael
Whoever told you that you can't use Time Machine on OSX Server was not wholly wrong or wholly correct. As ever it all depends on what roles you want your Server to perform. It is not recommended to use Time Machine to back up OSX Server if it's an OD Master and/or a Mail Server and/or running a SQL Database. This is because those databases are more likely to be constantly changing - think about it. Most people would say the 'sensible' thing to do is to stop the Services - or curtail in some way access to those databases during the backup - effect the backup and then re-start the Services or allow access to the databases again. This is something Time Machine does not know how to do. As ever it's not so much backing up that's the problem. The problem generally arises if you have to recover data after a Server or Drive failure. More often than the recovered databases exhibit all sorts of problems and corruption. Probably because the databases were 'mangled' by Time Machine when they were backed up.
If all you want from your server is simple file sharing, iCal, iChat and Web Services then you can use Time Machine and safely recover from the backups. In my experience this works for me consistently well. As ever YMMV.

  • Time Machine not backing up anymore

I'm using TimeMachine for my wireless internet as well as for backing up my hard drive. The internet works fine.
The issue that I am having is that Time Machine is no longer backing up my hard drive. The last backup was in November. Up until that time, I had backups daily. The only thing I can think of is that Time Machine is no longer deleting the oldest backup to make room. I tried to go in and delete the oldest backup, but after like 10 hours, it still hasn't deleted.
    Any suggestions?

How did you do that? If you used the Finder, your backups are corrupted.
How large is your Time Capsule's HD, and how much data is on your system? Since there hasn't been a backup in months, Time Machine will probably try to do a full backup. Your best bet may be to connect via Ethernet if at all possible, erase the TC's hard drive (use +*Airport Utility.+* Select +*Base Station > Manual Set-Up+* from the Menubar, then Disks in the tool Bar, then Erase.) Then let Time Machine start fresh.
Otherwise, try a +Back Up Now+ (from the TM icon in your Menubar, or by right-clicking the TM icon in your Dock) and see what happens. If you get an error message, start with the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum. It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.
If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup, what you've done, and the results.

  • Time machine not backing up automatically

On my MBP, I'm finding that Time Machine is no longer backing up automatically. It's on, and it tells me when it's going to back up, and it just doesn't. It's not asleep at the time, and I can tell it to back up manually, and it works fine.
There's this command you can type to change the interval:
sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backupd-auto StartInterval -int 3600
Supposedly, you can change the interval to something else, which I tried. But that had no effect. When I found that automatic backups stopped working, I changed the setting back, but they still don't work.
    Any ideas?

    theosib wrote:
    Well, something isn't working right.
This TimeMachineEditor you suggested seems to have an option where if a backup event is missed because the machine is asleep, it will backup on wake. Or am I misinterpreting the meaning of this option?
I do not use TME, and only recommend it as being safer than trying other means, such as the Terminal command you used, or some recommendations to edit the various TM LaunchDaemons.
If it's not working to your satisfaction, and there isn't any helpful Help, you'll have to contact the authors for assistance.
One possible fix is to do a "full reset" as detailed in item #B3 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting post at the top of this forum. But that may not fix whatever was wrong, or whatever TME did.
Before this started, had you done anything else to try to alter TM's schedule? If so, that's likely at least part of the problem. Either way, your best bet may be to do an Archive and Install to get a fresh copy of OSX. If you decide to take that route, I'd strongly recommend not using TME unless and until you're sure you need it.

  • My Time Machine will no longer back up to my external disk for unknown reasons.  It would not accept my password and said the disk is read-only and damaged.  How can I copy my files to my Mac so I can repair it?

My Time Machine will no longer back up to my external drive for unknown reasons.  It began after a series of power outages (my equipment is protected by a surge protector with battery backup), and was shut down correctly.  Then it began by not recognizing my disk and my Time Machine password, although I am positive it was correct. I tried NUMEROUS times to get into it. It says the disk is damaged and needs to be erased and started over.  How can I back up my files on my Mac so I can do that? I have no other disk to back up to.  I found the files in a folder called "Backups.backupdb", and tried to copy them into a folder, but get the message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup."  The "lost+found" folder did copy for me. Will I just have to lose 4 years of backups?

    Hi there,
I have the same issue. Usually hangs after 10K od sometimes after 18MB of backup file.
    Config: iTunes 10.4., Win 7 64bit, iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.3
I tried all of these without success:
    - deleted backups via iTunes / Preferences
    - deleted backups from sync folder
    - created a new admin user and tried to sync
    - reinstalled iTunes
    - ran all Windows updates, restarted, reinstalled iTunes
    - ran iTunes / Diagnostics (says everything okay, only info which is strange: diag says I am not a admin user, which is not correct)
Nothing helped. Who can help. I hope someone from Apple can take care, as I seem not to be the only one. Actually iTunes is the worst part about iPhone. Hope with iOS 5 and Cloud sync to get rid of iTunes.
    Any hints welcome,
    Cheers,
    Miguel-KA
