Time Machine not recognizing backup volume is the same

Hope someone can help. I'm having an odd problem with Time Machine in that it doesn't recognize that I have already done a full backup of my MacBook Pro.
A couple things to note, both computers are running Leopard 10.5.7 and the events described below took place over the course of several days (so logouts, shutdowns, etc. have occurred along the way).
On to the details:
1) Connected Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II drive directly to MacBook Pro via Firewire, selected the "+Time Machine Backup+" volume as the backup disk (the Studio drive has two partitions), and did a full backup.
2) Unmounted & disconnected the Studio drive from the MB Pro and connected it to a Mini via a Firewire port.
3) Shared the "Time Machine Backup" volume from the Mini and mount it on the MB Pro. I attach to the Mini using an Admin account, so have full access to the shared drive.
4) On the MB Pro I opened Time Machine Preferences -> Change Disk and select "+Time Machine Backup (Mini)+" from the drive list as my backup disk.
At this point TM creates a sparsebundle in the root of the backup disk with the name of the +MB Pro_<mac address>+, which is where it wants to do future backups to, and mounts it on the MB Pro. TM is ignoring the Backups.backupdb folder in the root of the backup disk which contains a folder for the MB Pro (which was created by the initial direct-connected backup).
***? I don't understand why it is creating this sparesbundle rather than simply using the drive as though it were directly connected to the MB Pro.
If I use Time Machine to Browse Other Time Machine Disks it shows me:
* "MacBook Pro" on "Backup of MacBook Pro" (the sparsebundle)
* "MacBook Pro" on "Time Machine Backup" (the direct-connected full backup)
* "Mini" on "Time Machine Backup" (the Mini's backup)
so, TM does recognize that there is a backup "disk" for the MacBook Pro already on the drive in this instance BUT not when I select the disk as a backup target.
One last piece of information:
On the MB Pro desktop I am currently seeing five drives mounted. The internal hard disk partition 1, int. hard disk partition 2, the +Time Machine Backup+ volume shared from the Mini, another attached volume shared by the Mini (also located on the Studio drive), and the +Backup of MacBook Pro+ sparesbundle.
If I open Terminal and look in /Volumes I see these same drives PLUS +Time Machine Backup-1+
I have no idea where that came from.
I don't want to run into this same situation when I set up Time Machine on my wife's MB Pro. I'll want to do the initial backup of her machine with the Studio drive directly connected too becuase otherwise it will take forever to go over our wireless network.
Does anyone know what is going on here, and more importantly how I can fix it?

Wow... That seems like a really bad design.
I can only assume there was a good reason for it. I don't think they did it just to annoy us.
When you backup to a directly attached drive, Time machine copies individual files to (what appears to be) a standard folder structure. If a file is corrupted, you lose one file.
When you backup over a network (one system has a wireless connection the other is connected with an ethernet cable) it creates a disk image containing the file and folder structure. If the disk image file is corrupted you lose your backup.
Is there any flaw to my logic here? On the surface it seems like a dumb decision to put everything in one file.
Only the top few levels (down to the one with a date and time) are normal folders. Everything else is not. What appear to be files and folders are actually "multi-links" (think extra-fancy aliases) to the actual backup copies. That's how every TM backup looks like a full one.

  • Time Machine not recognizing full space available on NAS.

I recently purchsed and set up an Iomega Storcenter ix4-200d NAS with Time Machine support.  The NAS has 8 TB storage total, with ~4.6 TB available.
I have TIme Machine support turned on in the Storcenter, assigned to a folder called "Time-Machine."  In my OSX Time Machine preferences, I select the "Time-Machine" folder on my NAS as the back-up disk, and my Mac connects to it just fine.
The challenge is Time Machine returns an error saying there isn't enough space on the backup disk to complete the backup.
For some reason, Time Machine is only recognizing 536.36 GB of space available on the backup disk, even though there are ~4.6 TB available.  I tried manually moving my iTunes media folder (~700 GB) to the "Time-Machine" folder on my NAS to see if the Iomega NAS was arbitrarily setting a max size to a Time Machine folder.  I was able to manually move just under 1 TB of data to the same "Time-Machine" folder that Time Machine says only has 536.36 GB of space.
I tried deleting the Time-Machine store on my NAS, turning Time Machine support off, then turning it back off and creating a new "Time-Machine" folder.  I did this several times and still get the same behavior.
I even tried running Time Machine piecemeal, excluding larger folders at first and running a back-up, to see if maybe Time Machine wasn't liking that large of an initial backup.  This worked, and then I gradually removed some exclusions and ran back-ups again, so each back-up size was never more than 200 GBs or so.  However, after several back-ups, I received the same error message saying there wasn't enough space on the backup disk when the total sparsbundle size reached 536.36 GBs.
Since I can manually move more than 536.36 GB of data to the backup disk, I'm guessing it must be something with Time Machine not recognizing the full space available on the NAS.
Any ideas?  Has anyone seen this before?

    Hello,
not that it helps, but I see the same on the exact same configuration. My message is also about not having enough space, ip-to exactly the same amount of room being available (only 536.36 GB available)?
I tried everything, including a full reset of the StorCenter, but to no avail. The timemachine backup used to work, however I thought that this was just because it didn't exceed the limit of one physical disk in the StorCenter (I've got 4 x 1 TB).
What is strange is that the original author has 2TB disks and still has the same problem? So it likely isn't related to the physical disk size. It seems like the maximum backup can only be 536.36 GB ??

  • Time Machine Error - No Backup Volume Has Been Selected

Just got the time capsule. Successfully had it replace old Airport Extreme setting. Successfully hooked it up via Ethernet to my iMac and completed a backup. Now I have it hooked up via Ethernet to my MBP. But I can't get it to backup
The Time Capsule disk mounts and I can see the files in it from my iMac backup. I'm connected to the Airport network.
In Time Machine preferences, it asks me to choose a backup disk. I select the time capsule. I turn the switch to on. And nothing happens. With the iMac, the backup started immediately.
After a minute, I get this error message:
    Time Machine Error
No backup volume has been selected.
To select a backup volume, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine.
Obviously, I have done this, but the Time Machine never turns on.
I have spent thirty minutes messing with this.
And suddenly, as I writing the post, and the error message comes up again, and I click Preferences, it switches to Preferences and suddenly, the backup starts.
    Go figure.

I had the same problem, though I have a non-conventional setup. My Time Machine volume is on a linux box shared with netatalk. Looking in the system log I was receiving, "System Preferences[295]: FSMountServerVolumeSync received error: -36". It turned out that the problem was with Little Snitch. Another post I found stated that Little Snitch was interfering with Time Machine's authentication when it was mounting the TM volume. Turning off Little Snitch fixed the problem. Seemed that simply rebuilding the Little Snitch rule list fixed the problems I experienced.

  • Time machine not recognizing free space even though it "knows" about it

Trying to back up to an external hard drive I'm getting this error from Time Machine when it tries to back up:
"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 52.5 GB but only 495.8 GB are available..."
Clearly it KNOWS the space is there, but its math is wrong since it seem to think that 52.5 GB is greater than 495.8 GB.
    Suggestions?

Sometimes, this error is legitimate. The user may not realize that they need to exclude additional hard disks that TM may be seeing. This is done in the “Options…” window of the Time Machine Preferences.
Nevertheless, many times this error just doesn’t make sense, stating that not enough free space exists for a backup that is clearly smaller. (“The backup requires 45.9 GB but only 182.6 GB are available”)
The answer and fix may have been discovered by a poster in the macosxhints forums: (http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-84284.html)
Essentially, while Time Machine DOES delete old backups from the sparsebundle, it DOES NOT free up the space occupied by those old backups. Eventually, "all previous backups were deleted and no space was gained. . . . What appears to be going on here is that the sparsebundle isn't self-shrinking - unused bands aren't being automagically discarded."
The solution is to compact the TM backup sparsebundle in Terminal using:
    hdiutil compact yoursparsebundlefilename.
He concludes, "I gained 30+gb of space on the backup volume by compacting that sparsebundle. And now TM runs just fine, since it has plenty of space."
Obviously, this is a bug in TM. It does not appear to effect everyone, and only seems to appear under certain curcumstances.
Let us know if this works for you.

  • Time Machine Not Recognized After Clean Snow Leopard Install

I've searched for this particular question.
I was unhappy with Snow Leopard dragging. I wanted a clean install. I did not have the original snow leopard installation for my computer, so I got a different snow leopard DVD. This has apparently caused problems with time machine.
The clean install in complete. I am now ready to migrate my Time Machine backup onto my iMac24". However, Time Machine is not recognized--at least not in the way I want.
When I plug my time machine HD into the USB, snow leopard asks if I want to use this for future back-ups. I decline, because I specifically want to restore what has already been backed up. The HD is visible as an external device--and I can in fact see the raw data of my time machine backup stored in folders.
However, when I enter migration assistant, time machine is invisible. On the page where I am expecting to select time machine, I instead get a perpetually spinning circle icon.
I suspect time machine is "linked" to the prior snow leopard operating system, rather than to the computer ID. Obviously, this is a bit of a mistake on my part. However, I'm already into the breech and I've got no choice but to go forward.
Please advise how to redirect my time machine to its new master (same computer, different snow leopard registration)?
    Thanks so very much.

Retail disk? Yes, it was the snow leopard CD.
I used a single license snow snow leopard CD install the first time around, when snow leopard was first released. At at that time I "upgraded" my system from leopard.
This time, I used a different physical disk with snow leopard with a family license. This time I did a "clean" install in which I first erased my hard drive using disk utilities.
There were no problems with the installation.
As I say, my time machine hard drive is "recognized" by the computer as an external drive. It just is not recognized when I utilize the migration assistant. It is also "recognized" as a time machine, but only as a potential time machine for prospective use to update going forward, whereas I want it to open up as a time machine for my iMac that I just wiped clean yesterday.
    Thanks for your assistance.

  • Time Machine Not Recognizing Some files as Changed ... Until  I Restart

Yesterday I upgraded the HD in my Macbook Pro, and I used Time Machine to restore my stuff to the new drive. Worked like a charm, except...
First bit of strangeness: I noticed that Time Machine hadn't restored the most recent versions of some of my applications, e.g. OmniFocus, Transmission, Skim, and PTH Pasteboard. I checked my TM backup, and sure enough, it had not backed up recent updates.
I noticed that all those programs have one thing in common: built in updaters. The programs download and install the updates themselves. I used the built in updaters to get the latest versions of the above programs, then ran Time Machine. Time Machine did not back them up. Hmm...
Second bit of strangeness: Prior to my HD upgrade, I kept my iTunes Library on an external drive. After the upgrade I had enough space for my iTunes library on my internal. I changed the Library location in the iTunes prefs, then did a "Consolidate Library" in iTunes. It dutifully copied my 100+ GB of music to my internal drive.
I then did a "Backup Now" in Time Machine. It didn't recognize the that any new files had been added.
So I decided to restart my computer to see if that had any effect. Bingo! Time Machine recognized the new music files AND the programs I had updated.
Call me crazy, but this seems like a bug. Anyone else run into this problem?

I seem to have a similar problem except not solved by a restart. I have been creating and editing files today and plugged into my backup disc this evening and I cannot seem to get these files into the backup. In time machine they only appear in the Now screen.
I corrupted a backup by the power failing on the external disc during a backup, so I deleted the time machine folders for that Mac and started a new backup. That new backup does not appear to be progressing, although the time stamped versions are there.

  • Time machine is working but showing always the same -current- files in brow

    Hi,
I'm running Time Machine on an external FW drive. It backups regularly.
I needed to restore backup of photo albums after a crash and I was only able to browse back and see the same album as the current one with no changes (over 2 months!).
Now I need a contact I deleted one week ago, I tried a search in the contacts, I tried to set the screen to show the surroundings contacts, in both cases, TM was able to scroll down to old backups, but only showed the same search (not able to change it or to click anywhere), or the same contact (no old contact appearing in between the two I was watching).
I tried to unselected then reselect the TM drive but no luck. I really need this contact back and TM is my only backup, the contact is as well deleted from my Mobile Me after a week.
    Help much appreciated.
    Regards.
    B.

If you're talking about contacts in your Address Book, first try the things in #E4 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If that doesn't help, see this thread, with some other folks that seem to be having the same problem: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2317886
It does show a workaround. If anybody has reported this to Apple yet, they haven't posted back, so we don't know if there's a better fix.

  • Errors with Time Machine (not completing backup, and needing to erase the ".inProgress" package)

I have in a previous discussion been talking about errors with my Time Machine backup.  The errors were with a problem with Indexing a file, it fails and stops the whole backup.  Each time it attemps another backup, it fills my ".inProgress" package with a (nearly) whole backup, filling my Time Machine hard drive, and thus errasing my previous good backups.  The error occurs after about 95% completion.
In my last post of a similar disscussion, the problem was indexing the Preference Pane files and this caused the whole backup to fail.  This was my last post there:  (below in some additional info of my situation)

This time it was the Mouse.prefPane that caused the error.  I'd like to exclude the entire PreferencePanes directory.
This was my error message this time:
I just realized this was on my small Developers partition.  Perhaps there is an error with the build, OR an error with the initial restore.  I'd like to perhaps exclude the entire /Volumes/Mac OS Lion GM.  I expect that Time Machine is working fine with my main partition and the error happens when it's almost done with the Mac OS Lion GM partition.
The problem now is that I only have 265 GB of 3 TB available on my Time Machine HDD.  If attempt another backup, it'll surely erase about 410 GB of my past saved backups.  I've already lost 6 months, and I only have two months left of backups.  I need to erase the ".inProgress" package again.  That'll take time, and it's impossible to do from this main partition, even at root access.  This ".inProgress" has a total of two (nearly) full backups; it didn't cleanup the first full backup attempt while starting the second, perhaps it would have had it finished.  But I fear even if I exclude the whole "Mac OS Lion GM" partition,  It'll create a third full backup before cleanup and erase ~400 GB of previous good backups.  Then, I'll have a total of 4 (nearly) full backups!  3 TB is just enough without any past backups.
Maybe I'll just copy my documentations of my 'errasing the ".inProgress" package'  last time (from the Mac OS Lion GM partition) and do a full restore of just that partition.  Thus erasing the errors all together.  If it doesn't fix the errors then this could be a bug in the build that doesn't allow Time Machine to work.  I've always included this partition in Time Machine before, even with other Lion builds, so I suspect that it was an error in the initial restore.  (I may be answering my own questions, and that the inital restore (of the small partition) is the problem, and I just need to re-restore the small partition)
Again, I'm going to have to erase the ".inProgress" file to regain 1.53 TB of space before proceeding.
Also, I gave myself permission to read the ".Backup.345781513.887697.log", the log that was created last night when I first started Time Machine this last time.  It was interesting, but didn't show the error I could see from the console.
Right now, mds and mdworker appear to be going crazy even after I just now turned off Time Machine.  I think I'll let it go for the rest of the night.  Then I'll work on erasing the ".inProgress" package from the other partition boot up.
That was my entire last post.  To add some information, I have two OS X partitons, both Mac OS X Lion.  One is my large main partition, the other is one I don't mind testing with.  I recently replaced my internal hard drive in my iMac and restored from Time Machine both partitions.  This appeared to go smoothly.  But I have yet to create a single successful Time Machine backup since.  At first it was doing a Full Backup, which I didn't like, but now it just aborts around 95% completion.  Each, time, it tries it fills the Time Machine hard drive with duplicate (nearly) full backups errasing my older good backups.  I would like to erase the ".inProgress" file to save space.
My main question in this new discussion is does anyone know of a good way of erasing the ".inProgress" file? This is so I can preseerve my previous backups.  ACLs and other permissions seem to make it impossible to erase from this startup partition, the one I'm running Time Machine from.  Even at root level, if I give myself permission to change permissions or delete a file, it'll say Operation not Permitted instead of Permission Denied.  I have been able to delete this ".inProgress" package before when booting from the other  partition, but with great difficulty.  I have had much help from another Member in this Support Community when it comes to solving my Time Machine problems.  I think I have found the problem (indexing files in my small OS X partition), as stated in my copy& pasted post above, but I really need to delete this inProgress package first to save space before continuing!

Now I'll have to fix the small partition?  How's the best way to do this?  There could be thousands of files that won't index fine.
See if there's anything you haven't done, that applies, in the pink box of #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting
Otherwise, since most (or all?) of the indexing errors are in OSX, you might want to just reinstall it.  Something may have gone wrong sometime, that damaged those files.
I reviewed #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting and I have already done most of those things.  I have just learned something new though:
When I included my Main OS X partition again, I got an indexing error for the first time for that partition.  I might be interesting to note that the _spotlight process was running, and it's running again (the magnifying glass has a dot and it generically says "Indexing Tom's iMac").  mdworker, mds and backupd processes really are working hard, one moment they used over 500% of my CPU.  It's nice to know for once quad core is good for something other than video encoding.  (Now if they could just get the Finder to do more than 100.1%, only 1 thread is doing 100%, I'd like to see file size calculations 8 times quicker!)
I never got an indexing error once in the past 2 weeks for that large Mac OS X v10.7.2 main volume, and it had appeared to finish that partition backup before running into problems with my smaller test partition.  Also, I had just updated the smaller test partition with a later build of Mac OS X.  But It appears that the beta builds are clearly not the problem.  I thought I could just restore again (from the December 4th backup) the small partition and both would be fine.
I'll finish reviewing all the suggestions on Time Machine - Troubleshooting and go from there.  Hopefully, the _spotlight indexing simutaniously was the only problem.  It's strange that the indexing hasn't happened since the original restore last week untill I finally got a good clean complete partial Time Machine backup.  Why would the first Time Machine backup trigger indexing again?
For now, I'm going to exclude the Main Partition again, and let another good backup run.  And try your suggestions.  (And wait till mds, mdworker, etc. to finish!)
I have the logs of the first two sucsessful backups and the last two failed backups from the last 3 hours, if that would help.?

  • Time Machine Not Recognizing Old Backups after getting hard drive replaced

Hello! I have a 13' Black Macbook pro which had a faulty hard drive so I had it replaced. Ever since then, all my old backups in Time Machine have been grayed out. I have no idea how to fix this and have tried almost everything on the web.
The only folder that allows me to "go back in time" is my Macintosh HD folder which I know I can access everything but it's a huge nuisance to not be able to click on a folder and go back in time in the same folder.
I just want things the way they used to be! Thanks for the help!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
The problem is, you have a different HD. Even if it has the same name and contents as the old one, it's still a different HD, and Time Machine treats it as a different one.
There's no way to fool it into thinking it's not.
Technically, it has a different UUID (Universally Unique IDentifier); that's what OSX uses to keep track of drives, not their names.
As you do new backups, you'll be able to access them just as you did with the old drive.

  • Time Machine not showing backups

Time Machine stopped backing up earlier this month and I have done numerous things to get backups again. Yesterday after upgrading memory on my iMac, not as a fix for Time Machine, I restarted Time Machine and it appeared to be backing up just fine. This morning when I looked at Time Machine preferences it does not display oldest or latest backup and when I open disk it shows 2015-01-24-083208.inProgress and if you look inside package it appears to have backups all the way back to when I started Time Machine back up. I have reformatted the drive during the process of trying to get backups working again and run disk utility and drive checks out fine. When it does a backup it shows progress bar and when complete tells when next backup is. I browsed through the folders in the 2015-01-24-083208.inProgress package and they do appear to be complete backups.

  • Time Machine not completing backup to Time Capsule

    MY OS: 10.8.2
My backups to the Time Capsule are interrupted with this message:
Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to xxxxx's Time Capsule.
The backup disk image "/Volumes/xxxx's Data/My MacBook Pro (2).sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
Can someone tell me what I can do to fix this?
    Thanks

    http://pondini.org/TM/C17.html

  • Time Machine not displaying backups of mounted /Users

Bottom Line: Time Machine 'Warp' GUI does not display available backups when using Finder to browser user directories stored on HDD, mounted on /Users in /etc/fstab, even though the backups exist and I can navigate to them from the Finder to the backup disk
    Machine Config:
    1. OS X Lion 10.8.5 on MBP 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running on a SSD as the OS X boot drive, and the OEM HDD in a drive tray in what used to be the superdrive bay.
    2. The HDD is a single partition dedicated to Users and mounted to /Users. When unmounted, the SSD has a /Users dir with a single admin-enabled user still present to ensure I can still boot and log in as that user in the event the HDD does not mount.
    3. The /Users dir mounts successfully using /etc/fstab
    4. The HDD still displays in the Finder window and the desktop, which is not a problem for me
I've posted a work-around at http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/mlanham/currEvents.shtml that explains I can, inside the TM restore GUI (what I've heard called 'warp' and 'space') select the machine label under the Devices list in Finder (on the left side). I can then expand folders without double clicking them, and get TM to restore the file(s)...TM sees the backups as present and available and functions as I would expect.
However, when I select a labeled location (e.g. Google Drive, Downloads) under the Favorites label, still inside the TM restore GUI, all the backups are black and do not otherwise indicate they are present for restore actions.
I thought I read a blurd somewhere warning me of this situation, but I cannot find the blurb anymore--surely I'm not the only one to have experienced this. Has anyone else experienced it? Overcome it?
More importantly, I am interested in knowning if this is 'as designed' behavior or a bug in TM's GUI presentation. Why should TM care if a dir is a mounted partition or not...if it was present during backup, and present during a restore request, it should render the available backups as available to select. Not make me do a work around.

Earlier, I posted that the OP in https://discussions.apple.com/message/8182305#8182305 resolved this situation by making a softlink from SSD /Users to HDD's /Users and removing the entry from /etc/fstab. Initially, I thought this was a bad idea, as if the HDD fails to spin up and mount to /Volumes, that the system would fail to boot as it would not find a /Users directory available.
Then I read a different post that implied that if that happens, simply boot to single user mode and fix the trouble with the HDD.
Is this soft-link + boot to single user mode a better choice than /etc/fstab to mount the HDD to /Users (where the SDD has a non-empty /Users with a single admin-enabled user in it)?

  • Time Machine not recognizing external hard disk

I am trying to set up backups via Time Machine on my external hard drive but as I go through the process the my hard drive is not recognized in the dropdown menu. It the external hard drive is recognized in the Finder but not by Time Machine. What gives?

do you know how the disk is formatted? it may be in a format that time machine does not support, but which the finder can see. just like this guy:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1241053&tstart=0
(solution included in that thread as well).

  • Time Machine Not Recognized. Now, Kernel Panics

A storm is brewing and I have no idea how to contain it. First, after April 26th, my Time Machine wasn't recognized... this was the date of my last backup, and I didn't notice it for a few days, and only confirmed it two days ago. I would plug it in, and the drive would get hot as though it were mid-backup, and stay that way. It doesn't appear in Disk Utility, it doesn't appear in the Finder, nowhere. I've taken EXCELLENT care of this Toshiba 640GB drive, and had it for two years. It was backing up just fine, and has been sitting on my desk for a few weeks.
My first kernel panics began 4/30, and I've had three, with the last two both yesterday. In order:

There's some stuff on my time machine drive I would really, REALLY like to get. I took it in to the Apple authorized service center here, and they had no idea.
My drive does not work on other Mac computers, and does not even show up. Apparently just the fact it's plugged into one makes it boot down slower... the tech guy noticed this, anyway. When plugged into a Windows, the drive itself is recognized, but only some partitions... I'm not really clear on what the guy was implying, something along these lines though. He was pointing to various partitions which were different colors, using some Windows utility, but he couldn't make any significance or conclusions based on it.
They suggested I back everything up and reinstall my OS, or possibly bring it back Monday, since I wouldn't get it back til at least then anyway (weekend). As for the drive and the data on it, I have no idea, but I'm SURE they're related to the kernel panics. There are coicidences, and then there are coincidences.
If I can just get at the Time Machine contents for a few minutes, that would be enough. Then, obviously, figuring out wth is going on. Would appreciate anyone to help me out with this, tremendously!
    Cheers,
    Clarence

I would have posted in 10.6.8 TimeMachine area.
You might also want to have more than one backup set.
Not sure until or without some trial and error who is going to scan and see something in a profile log dump.
USB cables and power adapters and even case, things fail that is a given and just a matter of when, not if. All the eggs though in one basket some get broken.
Whether it will get worse or the drive has bad sectors and I/O errors can be investigated and learned.

  • Time Machine not finishing Backup

I've been struggling to backup my computer. At first I was receiving the message "Time Machine Error Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while linking files on the backup volume"
After reading through discussions, I tried the troubleshooting. I erased through disk utility and also turned off energy and screen savers (it seemed to correlate with the backup failure and other people said it solved their problems) however...
Now I'm getting no error message or anything. The back up just seems to stop after about 15 to 20 minutes. When I look on my external drive, the file ends in ".inProgress"
    Any suggestions?

Thank you for your quick responce Pondini. The Time Machine Buddy is very helpful. I am now (again) receiving the "error occured while copying files to the backup volume", but I can see what is causing the problem now and address it.
One other thing...after I receive the error message and delete or exclude the culpret, should I erase the external hard drive and start over or just run back up again to let it continue? I still have yet to have one complete backup on the drive so I'm not worried about losing anything.
Just continue. TM will recover from a failed backup all by itself. In this case, of an initial backup, it will have to do a "deep traversal" again, which is lengthy, but it won't have to re-copy all the things it already copied.
