Time machine not restoring email file

Using Mountain Lion on MacbookPro.  When I try to restore en email, I go through the procedure and hit restore on the selected email in the selected TM backup.  TIme Machine reverts to the current Mail as usual but does not create the restored email.  Mail screen says Mailbox Not Selected.  There is no time machine folder in On My Mac and no recovered files subfolder under that.  On my older MacbookPro Time Machine created these and the recovered file shows up there.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Although you can restore messages from a Time Machine snapshot within the Mail application, it generally won't work with messages that were saved by an older version of Mail. In that case, you have to use an alternative method.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
~/Library/Mail/V2
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Inside that folder are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use. Decide which ones you want to restore messages from.
Enter Time Machine and scroll back to the snapshot you want. Select the account folders you want and then select  Restore ... to... from the action menu (gear icon) in the toolbar of the snapshot window. Restore the folders to the Desktop, not to their original location.
From the Mail menu bar, select
File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Import from the mailboxes in the folders you restored to the Desktop. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest. Then delete the folders on the Desktop.

  • Time Machine Not Recognizing Some files as Changed ... Until  I Restart

Yesterday I upgraded the HD in my Macbook Pro, and I used Time Machine to restore my stuff to the new drive. Worked like a charm, except...
First bit of strangeness: I noticed that Time Machine hadn't restored the most recent versions of some of my applications, e.g. OmniFocus, Transmission, Skim, and PTH Pasteboard. I checked my TM backup, and sure enough, it had not backed up recent updates.
I noticed that all those programs have one thing in common: built in updaters. The programs download and install the updates themselves. I used the built in updaters to get the latest versions of the above programs, then ran Time Machine. Time Machine did not back them up. Hmm...
Second bit of strangeness: Prior to my HD upgrade, I kept my iTunes Library on an external drive. After the upgrade I had enough space for my iTunes library on my internal. I changed the Library location in the iTunes prefs, then did a "Consolidate Library" in iTunes. It dutifully copied my 100+ GB of music to my internal drive.
I then did a "Backup Now" in Time Machine. It didn't recognize the that any new files had been added.
So I decided to restart my computer to see if that had any effect. Bingo! Time Machine recognized the new music files AND the programs I had updated.
Call me crazy, but this seems like a bug. Anyone else run into this problem?

I seem to have a similar problem except not solved by a restart. I have been creating and editing files today and plugged into my backup disc this evening and I cannot seem to get these files into the backup. In time machine they only appear in the Now screen.
I corrupted a backup by the power failing on the external disc during a backup, so I deleted the time machine folders for that Mac and started a new backup. That new backup does not appear to be progressing, although the time stamped versions are there.

  • Time machine not restoring MacBook Pro to original (pre-Mavericks) state??

I installed Mavericks, but don't like it so want to use Time Machine to restore my computer to a version before Mavericks. When I select Restore, though, it just added files to my desktop. How do I get it to Restore to pre-Mavericks??

Pondini passed away recently, but obviously his legacy lives on. You are going to need to use the command line to inherit the backup so it is recognized. Follow the instructions below. RIP Pondini.

  • Does Time Machine really restore all files of app?

    Hi mac people,
I have done a clean install, then i don't want use migration assistant to move back things, but when i move back garageband 6.0.5, i open it, then i realise that only app is been restore but all the loops and audio is not, then i search online found that i have to move those things by my own,
So this problem make me wondering does time machine really fully restore?
I also wondering how about other apps or files do they really all been restore even they SEEN like no problems?
    Thanks for helping !!!!!

then i realise that only app is been restore but all the loops and audio is not, then i search online found that i have to move those things by my own,
If you want everything restored from Time Machine, don't use Migration Assistant but use Setup Assistant - migrate al files when you are first prompted to restore from Time Machine or another Mac, after a clean install.
you can select what to restore - the settings, the libraries, the user data.
Since you do not want to use the assistants - to restore Garageband 6.0.5 manually, you transfer all files and folders in the system library:
    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/
    and the loops from
    /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/
    Your plug-ins from
    /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/
and the corresponding folders in your user library ~/Library/

  • Time Machine not restoring - HELP!

I had a 500Gb external drive with a majority of my data die on Christmas. No problem I figured, I have a current Time Machine backup I can restore from to a new drive. So I go into Time Machine and start the restore - about 10% of the way through a 5 hour restore it tells me it has encountered a corrupt file and cannot continue. (Why can't it just SKIP the corrupt file, continue, and tell me what files were corrupt and it had to skip at the end of the process??!! That would be too easy.) Anyway, that's not even my problem. So I figure I'll go in and manually restore items a few at a time to track down the corrupt file. HOWEVER, when I re-entered Time Machine the drive name that I was restoring no longer shows up! On any date going back 4 months! It was just there yesterday when I tried the original restore. Now its gone. So now I'm afraid I have no backup and all data is lost. Where did it go? ANY SUGGESTIONS!!!! Thank you!

Try repairing the backups, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • Installing a new harddrive and using time machine to restore old files

I want to replace the old 250 gig harddrive on my Macbook pro with a new 750 gig one I just purchased. I have made backups with time machine and have heard that after you install Snow leopard on the new drive you can just create your old computer with all the files back in place with the time machine backup you made from the previous drive. Im sure plenty of you have done this I am just wondering how it went and some tips of how to not mess this up. One question I have is do I need to do all the Snow Leopard updates for the system (I think my disc is 10.6.4) , or iTunes, quicktime etc, or will that all be resolved with the time machine restore. Same goes with iLife, should I install iLife first or will that come over with the time machine restore. I think im thinking into this too much but just not sure how this all works. Thanks for your help!

    Prepare your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. You will have an option appear to restore from a TM backup. You can select that option or you can complete the installation of OS X. Upon completion of the Setup Assistant you can opt to restore from an external drive or a TM backup.
Be sure your TM backup drive is connected and powered up. If all else fails you can always finish the installation and the reboot, then restore from your TM backup using Migration Assistant.

  • Time Machine -- trouble restoring a file

I need to restore a Quicken data file (GorfFinances.qdfm) that was saved by Time Machine to my backup drive  about a month ago.
Whenever I try it, a window pops up with this message: "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permissions to access "GorfFinances.qdfm."
Yet, when I check permissions on the backup file from within Time Machine and compare that with permissions of the current file as checked in the normal  Finder window, they are exactly the same -- as follows:
         Name                              Privilege
         Gorf (Me)                         Read & Write
         wheel                              Read & Write
         everyone                         Read & Write
Why am I getting that message and how can I fix the problem?
    Thanks,
    Gorf

I just had this problem with testing restoring a Quicken file from Time Machine. (I'm on OS 10.6.8 with Quicken Essentials 1.7.4.) Although I found lots of advice online about changing file permissions in different places, the less-extreme methods didn't work for me. Then I found a comment about restoring the directory/folder that contains the Quicken file rather than just the fil, and that worked like a charm. I test restored the entire Documents folder to my Desktop, and all 3,000+ files restored successfully with no complaint about insufficient permissions for any of the files, including the Quicken file.
I've since moved my Quicken file into a subfolder so that, if I ever need to restore the Quicken file for real, restoring that subfolder will take much less time than it took to restore the entire Documents.

  • Time Machine not restoring Mail Inboxes

I switched over to Mail from Entourage when I got Leopard. I installed the 10.5.1 patch last night and Mail then gave me a message that my junk folder was corrupt then crashed. I restarted, ran disk utility, and now two of my inboxes are empty. I ran Time Machine and it can see the inboxes and says hit "restore" to get them back, but the restore button is grayed out and I'm stuck seeing the emails but having no way to retrieve them. This is one major exercise in frustration and I'm ready to go back to Entourage, as I never had disappearing inboxes with it. Andbody know of any other way to get these inboxes back?

Now all my inboxes are empty. it appears Leopard 10.5.1 created more bugs in mail than it fixes. Thanks Apple! As for corruption, it worked fine before the update and the mailboxes were empty after the update. Also, what seemed to prompt the problem was the undeletable emails I'm now seeing other people report on the discussion boards. Looks like I may be heading back to Entourage. I like the idea of the scrolling over numbers and addresses to add them to the address book, but how about you make the actual email program work first!

  • Time machine not restoring contact!

Some contact phone numbers were accidentally deleted. So, I go to one of them, then click the time machine button in the dock. Time machine comes up, so I browse back until that contact's phone number reappears. I click restore, and it restores. The phone number doesn't come through though.
So, repeat the process and review duplicate. When I do, the phone number isn't listed in the update. Even if I tell it to keep both, the new/old one are identical and do not have the phone number. I can see the phone number in the time machine backup -- right there on the screen, but clicking restore doesn't bring any old info that's different than what I already have in the current contact.
    What am I missing?

P.S: I chose to do a clean install because I had too much trash and broken programs all over my system.
That's likely the problem. Backing-up damaged or corrupted data won't magically fix it!
I tried the normal upgrade without erasing the disk but unfortunately most of the trash was still there, so I had to star over from a clean disk.
Try repairing the backups, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). Depending on exactly what's wrong, that might help.

  • Time Machine not backing up File Vault encrypted iMac

I recently turned on File Vault and performed backups to my Time Capsule via Time Machine.  Although slow it did back up several times.  However because of it being slow I followed some advice which said to restart my iMac in Safe Mode and then do a normal restart, which should then speed up the back up process.  Well, I did this and it did not make any difference other than now it gets to the end of the back up and starts again, with about completing backup!
So, I'm thinking is it because of File Vault, or is there something else I can do to make sure of being able to perform a backup via Time Machine.  I am currently using Lion 10.7.5.
I assume that the backup (if it ever does another one) will also be encrypted as the option in Time Machine to encrypt is greyed out.  Any thoughts here?
I thought maybe I should turn File Vault off and try again, but that sort of misses the point if I want to protect my data.
    Help please.
    Much appreciated - Alani

Does it fail, with a message?  If so, what message?  If you don't remember, see #C2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of the same link to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.
Is it any faster if you connect via an Ethernet cable, instead of wirelessly?

No. Mountain Lion can encrypt network backups, but Time Machine on Lion can only encrypt backups made to a local or directly-connected external HD.
I thought maybe I should turn File Vault off and try again, but that sort of misses the point if I want to protect my data
No, that will take a very long time and won't make any difference anyway.

  • Time machine not restoring

I just got a new iMac to replace my older 2011 model and the old one used time machine to back up automatically to an external hard drive so I expected I could just set up the new one no problem.  When I use migration assistant, I go through the steps to transfer from a time machine backup from a hard disk but when I get to the "select your system" screen where it would normally present me with options to choose from, the loading circle just spins forever with the message "looking for other computers" nothing comes up, it just keeps spinning.  I've also tried directly connecting the two macs together and running the import from another mac option but the same thing happened.  The drive will mount on the desktop and I can open it in finder and see the backup files in it, but it just won't come up in migration assistant.  Any suggestions?  Both computers are running 10.8.4

After transferring the data, do as follows.
This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including exclusions. The backups won't be affected. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy the file to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot and recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane. It will show that you have no backups. Don't worry; that's expected. Run a backup to test. The backup may take much longer than usual. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

  • Time machine not updating all files correctly.

I went to recover a file today from time machine, and upon recovering it found out that it hasn't been backed up for over 2 months. This is a little concerning since it appears that all is going well.
Does anyone know how to fix this or a way to trouble shoot this.
    Thanks

The only thing that I have in the excluded list is the external drive that the server is backing up to.

  • Time Machine not restoring Microsoft Office.

    Hello there,
My hard drive recently failed completely. Luckily, I was still covered under Apple Care and was able to get it replaced for free, and I had also just backed up all my data. The problem I am having now is that since I've transferred all of my data from my old hard drive onto my new one using Time Machine I am no longer able to access my Microsoft Office applications. There are just question marks in my dock now where these icons used to be. Why am I not able to transfer these over? Is is a Microsoft permissions issue? I was able to transfer them over when I bought a new iMac and just duplicated my user account, but it's not working on my MacBook Pro now.
Any help would be most appreciated!
    Thanks.

I don't have the original discs, otherwise I would just reinstall. The confusing part is why all my apps transferred to my new iMac but not when I transferred everything over to my new laptop hard drive. Perhaps the volume copy I selected was corrupted because I backed it up when my hard drive was making weird noises and failing?

  • Time Machine Not Saving certain files

    I'm having a recurring problem with Time Machine. It will decide that it isn't going to save certain files or folders. I get this sort of a message;
    Error: (-36) SrcErr:NO Copying /Users/Documents
    Error: (-8062) SrcErr:NO Copying /Users//Documents
The disc permissions are all fine and there's no real reason this should happen.
The only thing I can see that separates these items from any other is that they all state in their Info that I have custom access. Sometimes this will show up as an unknown grayed out user that I can't change, or just a custom access setting.
    Any ideas ?

I am having the same problems. I have done all the recommended fixes from the Troubleshooting. I have run disk utility repair on the external hard drives and a verify on the internal drive. I have reformattted the external hard drive. I have done a full reset on the backup drive. I have excluded it from virus scans. I have set the energy saver to keep the drives running. But I keep getting this message (below). I got it on a file higher in the directory and I deleted that file and now it trips on the next file down. The process that I am trying to do is back up one external drive to another.

  • Time Machine not backing up files

    Hi there,
I have had an external hard drive connected via time machine for over a year now, and it has always performed continual backups on its own. Yesterday, however, it decided to no longer recognize the device and it now claims that time machine is not configured. I have tried restarting, shutting down and plugging everything in again multiple times, but nothing seems to work. It can't recognize the drive anymore, and the most recent thing I did was download the latest Mac OS X 10.5.8 software. Once I did that, it was recognized briefly under Disk Utility and I tried to Verify and Repair it. It couldn't complete the task, however, and now it doesn't show up. Suggestions?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
If it doesn't show up in Disk Utility, it's pretty likely failed.
Disconnect and power it down for several minutes. Restart your Mac, then reconnect and power the drive up.
Check all the connections; be sure they're snug and secure. Try different ports, cables, and combinations of the two (sometimes a plug that works fine in one port won't quite make good contact in another one).
If Disk Utility still can't see it, it's probably dead. Is it in warranty? If so, contact the maker or store where you bought it.
If DU can see it, but still can't repair it, a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app such as +Disk Warrior+ might. DW is about $100, and a good investment for the future, but there's no guarantee. Otherwise, try erasing it, but click +Security Options,+ then +Zero Out Disk.+ If that fails, the disk is a goner. If it succeeds, it may be ok.
