Time Machine not saving snapshots since Lion Upgrade?

I upgraded from SL to Lion a recently and have noticed that Time Machine seems to be behaving diffrently from SL.
I tend to back up to an external USB connected drive every 1 or 2 days.
I've noticed a couple of things...
1) TM in the taskbar usually shows an exclamation mark and says Backup Delayed. This didn't happen under SL wth the same backup frequency
2) Possibly related - if I look in dashboard I see hourly messages stating
Starting standard backup
Error -35 while resolving alias to backup target
Backup failed with error: 19
I assume this is because the external drive isn't permanently connected (it's only for backups) ?  I thought TM saved hourly snapshots to my local HD but does this message mean it's trying to backup only to the external drive?
I also get the following quite frequently...
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
Deep event scan at path:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
Finished scan
Having searched around this might be because of the number of backup fails between successful backups?
I've restored a couple of files from older backups and they seem to restore ok so the backups on the external drive seem valid and go back a year.
Is there something wrong with my TM settings ... something I should have changed after going to Lion?
Any help gratefully accepted... it's more of an irritation at present but would hate to find a problem waiting to catch me out when I desperately need to restore!
Cheers
Iain

Yes, Apple changed that.  Previously it wouldn't do that until there'd been no backup for 10 days;  now it's shown as soon as an hourly backup can't find the destination.

Error -35 while resolving alias to backup target
That's normal if the drive isn't connected.
Do backups work properly when it is connected?  If so, there isn't a problem.

Yes, but those are completely separate from the ones on your TM drive.  See #30 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

You should get those after backups that actually failed (rather than just didn't start), or after an abnormal shutdown or improper disconnection of the external HD.
It means that Time Machine isn't sure whether the previous backup completed successfully; so it must compare everything on your system to the backups.
I'd recommend connecting the drive and letting a backup run.  See if it completes normally.  Leave the drive connected and either do a backup manually, or wait for the next hourly one, and see if you get those messages again.
You can tell what's going on with recent backups via the widget in #A1 of  Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Time Machine not backing up since Lion OS installation

After installing Lion OS, keep getting error message that Time Machine backup has failed. Was using a Western Digital 500gb that worked fine with Snow Leopard. Message said there was not enough room on external hard drive. Should have been plenty of room. Only needed 43gb. Went and bought a 1 tb Seagate. Backup worked the first time then started giving me error messages that there was a problem with the disk. Spoke with Seagate tech and we erased/partitioned the external hard drive. Worked one more time then started giving me error messages again. Erased again but, now won't back up at all. Seagate believes Apple has a problem with this since they have had other calls on their hard drives after Lion OS installation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am out of my AppleCare warranty. When I first installed Lion, it locked my MacBook Pro up. Had to go to Apple Store to revive it.

  • Time Machine lost all backups after Lion upgrade

After Lion upgrade TM asked me to perform a 13 hours backup; I've agreed but now the oldest backup is 3 days ago. What is happened?
    Please can somebody help me?
    Thanks

I can't help here, but before I upgraded my old G5 (OS 10.5.8) TM popped up a message saying that old files had just been deleted. That was what TM does when its HD is getting full. But this was strange because I knew that I had lots of TM space, and since the last use of the conputer (about 2 hours before) I certainly had not saved to the internal HD several GB of files. To my astonishment, all but the last 4 weeks of files had been deleted, back to Jan 2010! GetInfo said that the space left was about the same as before the incident, whereas it should have shown a huge amount of free space.
I deleted all the remaining backup files and started again. It shook my confidence in TM's ability ot provide a reliable backup system. Now I regard it as a useful source of recovering old versions of files (eg., text, images etc.), rather than as a means to restore the system hard drive. Fortunately, I have been using Carbon Copy Cloner for years to make bootable backups of the whole system HD which can then be used, by simply cloning back to the system HD, to get back to work using the state of the HD when I last cloned. Alternately, the clone on the backup disc can be simply examined in the Finder to recover individual files.

  • Time Machine not saving all Users

    Hi,
I have just used Time Machine for the first time and noticed that it was saving "x" of around 142gb as its first save.
However, I noticed that when I go through the back up history, whilst it saved my wife's account/user files it hasn't saved mine. The icon of my "house" in the Places section doesn't highlight when you scroll over it with the mouse. It does in the "Now" window.. but page through the back up history and it's not saved. My files are also not found in the Users folder.
    Any help really appreciated.
    Mark

    Are you using File Vault?
That's the only reason TM won't save your home folder on each backup. It should, however, save the encrypted disk image when you log out.
If not, start with a Finder window showing your home folder, then go into Time Machine. It should appear that way.
And be sure you're not looking at the first (lowest) window in the "cascade" of the "Star Wars" background; that's the +Today (Now)+ window, representing what's currently on your system. Navigate to the actual backup (behind the Today window) or via the timeline on the right.

  • Time Machine Not Saving certain files

    I'm having a recurring problem with Time Machine. It will decide that it isn't going to save certain files or folders. I get this sort of a message;
    Error: (-36) SrcErr:NO Copying /Users/Documents
    Error: (-8062) SrcErr:NO Copying /Users//Documents
The disc permissions are all fine and there's no real reason this should happen.
The only thing I can see that separates these items from any other is that they all state in their Info that I have custom access. Sometimes this will show up as an unknown grayed out user that I can't change, or just a custom access setting.
    Any ideas ?

I am having the same problems. I have done all the recommended fixes from the Troubleshooting. I have run disk utility repair on the external hard drives and a verify on the internal drive. I have reformattted the external hard drive. I have done a full reset on the backup drive. I have excluded it from virus scans. I have set the energy saver to keep the drives running. But I keep getting this message (below). I got it on a file higher in the directory and I deleted that file and now it trips on the next file down. The process that I am trying to do is back up one external drive to another.

  • Text on some pages not displaying correctly since Lion upgrade

Since upgrading to Lion a few days ago, I find that the texg on many web pages does not display correctly. It appears to affect mainly header texts - all I get is a row of the capital letter "A" in boxes. I am running Safari Version 5.1 (7534.48.3) on Lion 10.7 Build 11A511.

I had my problems with TM after successfully using it for awhile. Then I started getting errors like others. So I waited for the next update. • IPhoto library not loading since lion upgrade

    Hi,
Since upgrading to lion, iphoto will not load the iphoto library anymore. iPhoto starts with the error message "your iphoto library is either in use by another application or you don't have permissions...". iPhoto was perfectly running on 10.6 (a few days ago) and luckily i have some time machine backups from before the lion upgrade.
    So i tried
-to start iphoto with option+control and rebuilt the library. Unfortunately it stops with item 9000 or something.
-tried to rebuild the library with iphoto library manager, but it causes so many problems with duplicates that i stoped the process. I guess it would probably fix the library but too much hassle.
-tried to restore the library from time machine -> same error message
Has anyone experienced same behaviour after upgrading to lion? It's too bad i can't just restore from the backup (i thought that's the point of having it) but may lead to the idea, that the iphoto application might be corrupted. I tried to download the ilife image from my university's software distribution server again, but last but not least, lion does not support the server version anymore "the version of server you are trying to connect is not supported...." So no download right now...
Thx for any help and hints
    regards, dorian

    Hello,
I am having this extremely frustrating problem as well. My iPhoto was working perfect two days ago and today after installing an upgrade (i always keep up with them) it refuses to load and all i get is a white gear looking shaped loading symbol.
    Help anyone....??
    Thanks!

  • Time Machine not backing up music added to iTunes since the original backup

My girlfriend has a Macbook and I decided it was time for her to back up. I used Time Machine with my Lacie external HD. The original back up got all the music, documents, etc.
This morning was the first time I had hooked up the external HD since the original back up. I manually ran it and wanted to check if it added the new music and documents. My resume, which I updated last night, was there. But when I looked in the iTunes folder the new music I had added was missing.
Will the daily or weekly back up get the new music files? Is there something I did wrong with set up? Of course I could start over but I'd rather fix the issue and make sure everything is being backed up.
Your suggestions or comments are appreciated.

How are you verifying whether they were backed-up? Use +Enter Time Machine,+ not the Finder.

The labels of hourly, daily, and weekly backups are just labels. The process is the same with each. The only thing that's different is how long TM will keep them. A TM backup is a TM Backup.
Is there something I did wrong with set up? Of course I could start over but I'd rather fix the issue and make sure everything is being backed up.
First, check TM Preferences > Options. Be sure nothing is listed there that would prevent any iTunes data from being backed-up.
If you still don't see them, download the TimeTracker app, from www.charlessoft.com.
It shows most of the files saved by TM for each backup (excluding some hidden/system files, etc.). That should show what was actually backed-up.

Screen saver won't start since Lion upgrade. Two different machines, same issue. Help

For anyone following this thread, I've found a solution to my problem. Turns out that a cute widget called FishTank appears to be the culprit. With it running in Dashboard (even when I don't see Dashboard) the Screensaver and Sleep functions don't work. I turned it off, not because I'm clever, just because I tired of it, and voilà, Screensaver and Sleep are now working. It can stay in my widgets list without any problem, it just can't be turned on. I'm going to delete it anyway, however.
Hope this points the way to solutions for some of the rest of you!
