Time Machine not see my External HD anymore.
I reset my ABES and now time machine doesn't see my external hard drive. Not sure what I did wrong. Can someone please guide me in the right direction or help me find it again.

Suggest the following steps:
Power down the entire network....all devices....power down order is not important
Wait a minute
Start the modem first and let it run a minute by itself
Start the next device connected to the modem the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time the same way until everything is powered back up
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
Open Time Machine
Make sure that it is "ON"
Click Select Disk
Click on the hard drive to highlight it
Click Use for Backup
Keep an eye on things for the next 10-15 minutes to see if Time Machine backups get going again

Time Machine - Not Seeing My Buffalo LinkStation Hard Drive
Currently have a Buffalo LinkStation 2TB hard drive on my home network. The Buffalo is connected to my router (Netgear WGR614v10). It is not physically connected to my iMac, but I do have a LinkStation icon on my desktop in order to add files to.
When trying to start Time Machine, I click "Choose Backup Disk" but the only drive listed is my Maxtor 750GB that I had when I purchased my iMac a couple of years ago. The Maxtor was purchased when I first bought the iMac because I wanted to use Time Machine (my iMac has a 750GB internal hard drive).
Because the Maxtor 750GB is the only backup drive listed, I click "Set Up Time Capsule" but the "AirPort Utility" says it was unable to find any AirPort wireless devices. The only thing I can do at this point is "Rescan" which only proves the same result. There is a "Manual Setup" button at the bottom but it is greyed out and I can't select it.
How do I configure the Buffalo LinkStation so Time Machine will view it as an available backup drive?
Also, how would I do this if I added an additional hard drive (or two or three more)?
I have a feeling this is probably obvious and I'm just missing it.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Time Machine does not work well, if at all, with some NAS devices. See #2 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). -
How do I make Time Machine NOT access my external drive?!?!?
Even though Time Machine is turned off it keeps accessing my external HD. About every 10 minutes it will run the drive for a short time, the drive used to just sit nice & quiet until I wanted to read/write to it, now the constant on/off cycle is driving me nuts.
Is there any way to stop OSX 10.5 from doing what it's doing??Because something keeps spooling up the drive @ every 10-20 minutes. Before I upgraded to 10.5 everything worked normally. The drive would just sit nice & quiet & idle until I wanted to read/write to it. Then it would become active, as expected.
Now, however, something in 10.5 is accessing the drive, and running it, for some mysterious reason. Like I said, this happens about every ten minutes or so and it's very annoying.
I realize that I haven't set-up Time Machine, I don't want to use it, this is a work computer that already has several layers of redundant back-up, so I really have no interest in using Time Machine right now.
So if it's not Time Machine activating the drive does anyone have any other ideas? This never occurred before installing 10.5, which leads me to believe that there's something in the OS responsible for this. -
Time Machine not backing up external drive
Recently set up TM using a WD 1TB Firewire 800 Drive. All works fine but...
Have a Lacie 500GB drive that had a power supply failure so had to wait for that to be replaced. That is now done so I put the Drive back into the system. Unfortunately, despite being able to see the drive (Two partitions actually) in the TM Finder window it only shows 'now' for the drive. I can see how to exclude these drives but I don't seem to be able to force them to be included. The Lacie drive was added two days ago so I would expect it to have some sort of back up image by now.

I started again with the none TM drive and gave it the exact same name as before(changing the format to 'journalled" (it was just Mac OS extended before). I then restored the files onto it using the Clone function in Intego's backup X4 All okay so far and all the important files are now on a pristine 'new' disc. The problems started when TM started it's routine. I now get an error message:-
"*Time Machine Error*
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while linking files on the backup volume."
I then excluded the drive from the TM Backup and TM was happy with next Backup so it must be the none TM drive that is failing. I reinstated the drive into the back up and I get the error again.
Is there a prefs file or something that I can dump to clear this or should I start again? i.e. Reformat both drives, reinstall the files onto the none TM drive then start TM again. Or just reformat the TM Drive then restart from the beginning letting it pick up all drives to back up? -
Time Machine does not see my external HD
I would like to setup TM but it does not see my external HD, but I can see it on desktop in and finder. I can browse it. But time machine does not see it and forces me to use airport time capsule but I don't have it. Help please.
What format is the external drive in?
If it's formatted for Windows (either using the MBR partition table or using FAT/NTFS volumes) then Time Machine cannot back up to this disk.
The disk needs to be formatted as Mac OS X Extended using either the APM or GPT partition tables.
Life is complicated somewhat by the fact that the OS, in general, can read MBR/FAT drives, but they're not suitable for Time Machine (limitations in the disk formats prevent some of Time Machine's features from working).
You can check the current partition map/disk format in Disk Utility.app - just select the disk on the left and the information will be displayed below. If the disk is using MBR and/or FAT then you'd need to reformat the drive in order to use it with Time Machine. -
Time Machine not moving data to external hard drive.
Time Machine is excluding my external hard drive from backups. All formatting and connections seem to be correct. When I try Time Machine Preferences, my external hard drive icon appears on the "exclude" list in the options box.I can't highlight it to remove from list. So, Time Machine is not moving any data to the external drive except for a copy of the internal hard drive.

LennyMy guess is that your external drive uses formatting that Time Machine will not back up. Click on the drive in the finder and type Command "i" or File > Get Info to see how your drive is formatted. If it's not some flavor of MacOS Extended, Time Machine won't back up your external. If the drive is formatted correctly use the first Aid tab in Disk Utility to repair your external. Repeat the repair process until Disk Utility reports no errors.
If your drive uses FAT formatting and you need to use it to share files with a PC use some sort of PC software to back up the drive. -

No, sorry. Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or a drive on another Mac on the network that's running Leopard. It will back-up to a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme, but even that is, technically, unsupported, and requires a running a Terminal command to make it work.

You may find some "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless. -
i got a macbook pro 2008 and can not back up using time machine. it eject my external hard drive everytime. does anybody has a fix???
Does your external hard drive have it's own power supply? It should.
Is your external hard drive formatted with the NTFS file system? It won't work.
It needs to be formatted either with Mac OS Extended or FAT32.
(There are drivers available to add NTFS support to OS X but their quality is unknown, especially the "free" ones.) -

Western Digital inform me that it isn't their external hard drive problem and suggest that it is an Apple software problem ?

I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles,descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .

Is possible to have a time machine backup on an external hd connected to either a primary or secondary router and not have "back to my mac" using 10.7.3?
The bottom line is that Apple does not support Time Machine backups at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme. If they don't support their own router, they certainly don't support other routers from other manufacturers.
Connect the drive directly to the Mac using either USB or FireWire.....or....use a Time Capsule. Either of these setups will be supported.
If you want to try the unsupported method(s), you can certainly do so. But, I would suggest that you have a secondary backup plan in place if this is important data that you will be backing up. -
I have a new time capsule (replace my old time capsule). I want to erase my old one. My computer does not see the old one anymore, how do I connect it (the old TC is not connected to modem). I want to erase it and then use it as either a second hard drive (sired/sirelesly?) or as a hard drive/bridge. So,
1. why doesn't my cmputer see the old TC
2 once i have solved that, how do I erase the old one
3. Can I use the old one as a supplemental hard drive
a. wired?
b. wirelessly?
4. Can I use the old one as a range extender?
I know .. a lot of questions but I would appreciate any help.

1. Because it is either the same IP as the new one or hidden by being plugged in as a second router.
To access it, isolate one computer from the existing network and plug it directly by ethernet to a lan port of the TC. Use the erase function in the TC to remove all the content of the hard disk.
Then go to the internet tab, connection sharing and select off bridged. You can then reconnect the TC to the network.. and the computer as well. The TC will act as bridged device.. getting IP from the main router and should then appear correctly in Airport utility.
2. I covered in 1. But you just go in airport utility manual setup. disk, and you will see the erase function. You can also set it to bridge and leave the erase until you put it back in the network.. but be careful you erase the right one.
3. You can use the old TC via wired or wireless.. although I would always stick to wired connection if possible. Speed on wireless is 10x worse than wired.
Also note the reliability goes down dramatically after 2 years.. a series 1 3 years old or more is ebay fodder unless you want to repair it. Do not trust vital data to it.. when it dies you will have issues recovering it.
4. Yes, all apple routers will function as wireless extenders. when you do that the ethernet ports turn off so it becomes a purely wireless device.. strange apple decision on what you want to use your TC for. -

Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store -
ITunes are not seeing my external drive as the library
Hi, I'm struggling to get music on my iPhone.
All our music is stored on an external hard drive that we use with our iPods. My wife and I recently got iPhones and we're trying to put some music on them.
iTunes is setup to get the music from the hard drive but for some reason I can not access it any more. My problem is that iTunes are not seeing my external drive as the library.
Here's how I've set my iTunes up:
Edit - Preferences - Advance
iTunes media folder location: J:\Lacie_iTunes (that's where the music is stored)
Now this worked perfect with our iPods but for some reason iTunes is not seeing the music anymore.
In iTunes, if I click on Library and then Music all I get is a screen to either download music (with tutorials) or import CD's (with tutorials).
I'm using iTunes 9 and Windows 7, the iTunes version on my wife's laptop is an older version but I do not think that that is the problem.
Any advice would be MUCH appreciated!Setting the iTunes Media folder in preferences only moves the content to the external drive. The library database files will still be at the default location of ...\My Documents\My Music\iTunes. When you move the portable drive from one machine to the other you'll have access to the content, but not the database hence you get an empty library and the prompt to add some content.
See this recent post for pointers on how to rearrange the database & media folders so that everything is truly portable. I don't have time just now to rewrite the instructions for your specific drive & folder names but if it's not clear I'll pop by later and write them out again.

I recently replaced my old Macbook Pro with a new Macbook Pro Retina.
The original MBP had Time Machine set up on an external HD, and I also had some manually saved/backed up files (stuff that didn't need incremental backups; very old stuff) on the disk as well, in folders. This worked fine and well for the life of the original MBP.
When I set up the MBPr, I did not elect to transfer everything over from a Time Machine disk, as I wanted a Fresh Install; I chose to just re-download/install the apps I needed from the App Store. Much cleaner, more stable. I updated to Yosemite immediately so, it gave me more of a clean install.
The problem is, Time Machine now won't read any Time Machine backups from that disk. Migration assistant can pull data from it, but it's a bit wonky. It was easier to just manually copy over what I needed.
Now, I just want to "reset", and completely remove the old Time Machine data from the external hard drive, since it is completely useless to me now (I can't access it on this computer, and it's taking up space). I want to remove the Time Machine data, as if it were never there, but keep my other folders/files that are on the disk (so, a format is not feasible).
I will then set the disk up as a new, fresh Time Machine disk for the new MBPr.
What is the proper method for removing Time Machine data from an external disk (which doesn't seem to be associated with this machine anyway)? I know a simple rm -rf will cause problems.
