Time Machine Now Impossibly Slow

After the first long full back up nearly 2 years ago, my WD My Book Studio II has worked seamlessly completing Time Machine backups via FireWire in a few minutes every hour until about a month ago.
Several things occured around that time. Not sure in which order but I started getting 'back up disk full deleting older backups' warnings. It failed to complete a back up - I stopped it after a few days, yes days of trying. A few day before this I installed Sophos anti-vrus. 'Why after all these years did you do that,' I hear you say. I'm not sure. I suppose I was taken in by the malware splurge. Anyway I excluded Sophos from scanning Time Machine back ups and, in due course, turned Sophos completely off. However, I am still left with a back up that takes forever - it has yet to complete. Yes, I have stopped and re-started it a few times ( and the drive [actually took them out at one point to give them a hug!]). WD RAID Manager states that both 1TB drives in the case are healthy. I also noted that Spotlight was slowing the whole computer down by trying to index the back ups although when and why this started isn't clear. Anyway I have excluded TM back ups from Spotlight by placing it in the Privacy window in System Preferences. If I look at 'All Processes' in the Avtvity Monitor, not a lot is happening but the rate of back up is almost non-existent.
The TM widget states:
Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Back Ups/Backups.backupdb
Waiting for index to be ready (100)

Node requires deep traversal:/Users/MervynG/Pictures/iPhoto Library reason:contains changes|must scan subdirs|fsevent|missed reservation|

Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.

I am suspecting that this may be a Sophos (virus checker) issue but, having turned it off, I'm left wondering how best to resolve the issue. Currently instead of a small back up it is trying to back up 123GB (of a 650GB hard drive) at a snail's pace. One other possibly related factor is that my iMac hard drive is nearly full (40GB to spare).
I have read Pondini's truly comprehensive and marvellous advice, in particular A6, and understand that for whatever reason TM may be undertaking a lengthy procedure. But in my case lengthy is measured in weeks and days rather than hours. Along the way trying to achieve this one new back up, TM has deleted nearly 18 months of other back ups apparently to make space.
I can't see any other threads describing quite this scenario so can anyone help?
Is (was) it Sophos or something else? Will it get to the end of this 'full' back up before Christmas and suddenly produce lost back ups having actually been doing an incremental back up (Pondini item D2)? Should I let it run? Should I uninstall Sophos? Should I re-format the WD drive and start again?
All wisdom and advice gratefully received.

Thank you both.
Sophos had an uninstall application in its folder that I used to remove the application itself. I assume that that was ok.
Have now re-started in Safe mode and then again normally.
The WD doesn't sound or seem different i.e. its hard drives are slowly and irregularly clicking away in a manner that suggests it is still not functioning as it once did. How do I know? Well I think it sounds different and it goes on and on and on ..... It never gets there and never stops until, that is, it fails (to complete). Also it seems to slow other computing activity.
Thus far each new attempt at a back up begins with a 'calculating changes', then proceeds to begin backing up but now at some point, usually a few hours in and with only a few MBs of the 123GB complete I get a spurious  'WD My Book Media is in  use and cannot be turned off' warning window.
The last two widget logs (see below) seem to suggest something was trying to eject the WD back up disk (it wasn't me; it just appeared). After this the tool bar icon has an exclamation mark and when I click on it it says 'Back up failed'?

I have carried out a number of 'repairs' since this issue first arose using disk first aid and each time there were no problems reported.
I do have a LaCie network drive that I occasionally use with CarbonCopyCloner as I read a while back that network drives couldn't work reliably with TM so I do appreciate that RAID 1 is no protection if the controller on the WD is misperforming.
So can I definitely say the drive hardware is faulty yet? The 'info' states that everything is healthy?
I will leave it running whilst I await your thoughts, however, I note that it is 615MB into the 123GB after only an hour so. This is odd (or perhaps normal depending on how you view it) as it has never got that far so quickly since this issue first arose.

  • HT1175 I have OSX Lion 10.7.5 and the backup in time machine is extremely slow

I have OSX 10.7.5 installed on my MacBook Pro and the backup to time machine is extemely slow.  Time Machine indicates 4 days or more.  Why?

  • Time machine backups have slowed considerably since my installation of Mavericks -- why?

Ever since installation of Mavericks, time machine backups have slowed to a crawl.  The message preparing backup used to to take 10 seconds to a minute, now it takes 5 minutes.  The status of the backup used to show 10mb's of 80 mb's backed up, and take under 1 minute, now it takes 5 minutes.  Finally cleaning up notice, and the time to clean up has increased significantly.  My backups go to an external HD (7200rpm) connected vis firewire 800, that has approx 180 gigabytes available of its 1 terrabybyte capacity.

I upgraded to Mountain Lion a few weeks ago. Everything was fine with Time Machine until a few of days ago.
Same problem others described: extremely slow, taking hours to back up just a few MB.
I verified the Time Capsule drive and my Mac hard drive - no problems found.
I then erased the Time Capsule and started Time Machine. It did the full backup in a fairly reasonable amount of time (several hours, but not unexpectedly long).
When it started its first incremental backup, it reverted to the same problem: extremely slow, but it did finish eventually.
I then shut down the Mac and restarted (power cycled) the Time Capsule. Then I started up the Mac and told Time Machine to back up now. It backed up 30+ MB in just a few minutes, so it seems back to normal. We'll see how it goes when the next scheduled backup starts up.
But you might try rebooting the Time Capsule (and your Mac).
By the way, when it was in the middle of the extremely slow backup, I disabled Norton Anti-virus and it didn't seem to speed it up any. But I left it disabled after I rebooted the Time Capsule and had a successful incremental backup, so I'm not sure yet if Norton is a factor.

  • Just upgraded to ML, and Time Machine is super slow

Why is time machine backup so slow? Normally it took only about ten minutes...now it seems like it needs a whole day or more?!?!?!

    Hello Harold,
Sorry to hear that Time Machine has not been backing up.  I recommend following the steps in the article below for steps to isolate and troubleshoot this issue:

  • How do you remove back up data from the memory storage? my storage data states that i have over 80gb of data used for back ups and i dont know why as i use a external hard drive as a time machine .now my 250gb flash storage is nearly full

how do you remove back up data from the memory storage? my storage data states that i have over 80gb of data used for back ups and i dont know why as i use a external hard drive as a time machine .now my 250gb flash storage is nearly full.. HELP!

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.

  • Hi, I have a macbook pro with a new hard drive installed. My WD external drive backup on time machine now wont let me access the files. I get a prompt saying 'you do not have permission to access the files'

hi, I have a macbook pro with a new hard drive installed and restored. My WD external drive backup on time machine now wont let me access the files. I get a prompt saying 'you do not have permission to access the files' After my new drive was installed I plugged in time machine and it started backing up. I paused it when I realised that it was running for more than a few minutes. I now realise that it probably started backing up the new hard drive all over again. Which makes me think that the original back up must be on the WD back I cant seem to access it. Any ideas would be helpful.

Do you get this window when you hold down the Command+Option keys and launch iPhoto?
If not then you're not holding down both keys long enough.

after lion 10.7.3 update messed my mac had to restore from time machine now Outlook won't connect with microsoft exchange, any idea?

I've had a similar problem.  On my first boot up after installing 10.7.4,  Firefox would not open.  Crashed every time.  Safari was not affected.  I have no idea if it was related to the flash plugin, but I did install a the latest version of that a couple of weeks ago.
Here's what fixed it: a second boot up.

  • Restored my iMac from Time Machine now Hard Drive has doubled! Need Space!

I Restored my new (refurbished) iMac 2010 (Snow Leopard 10.6.4) from Time Machine now the Hard Drive has doubled 450GB to 900GB. I want to recover the space on my hard drive, What do I do?
Side Note: My previous iMac (2007) died so I went and bought a refurbished model here. My old iMac had 10.6.8 installed versus my "new" iMac has 10.6.4 installed. I can't restore from my Time Machine since it was from another model.

Since it's a new (refurb), boot with the install disc, wipe the HD, and reinstall the OS. On first boot, don't migrate, but create an admin account using the same username/password combo as on the TM backup. When finished, run Software Update, and bring it up to 10.6.8. Then, mount the TM HD and try restoring. Life would be so much easier if you had a bootable backup/clone. Instantly able to migrate.

to see the drive again so i can retrive my files
I don't know what drive failed.
I'm thinking here your internal drive failed? Was it replaced?
You have a blank internal drive and a TimeMachine drive and your asking how to reinstall OS X so you can restore from the TimeMachine drive?
How are you getting here? Another machine or device and what is it?
We need more details of your situation please.
