Time machine on local WiFi network - OS Extended (Journaled) format error

Hi guys,
I did an initial Time machine backup of my Macbook Pro via Firewire to an external hard disk. Everything went smoothly and later Time Machine did regular backups without any problem.
When I attached the external Time Machine hard disk to one of the Macs in my local WiFi network the troubles began.
My Macbook could still see and mount the Time Machine drive via the network but didn't want to backup to this drive any longer. It came up with this error message: "The backup volume is not in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required..."
When I connected the Time Machine drive back to my Macbook directly via Firewire, it resumed its backup duties without complaining. Very strange...
Whenever Time Machine tries to excess the drive via the network (AFP shared) I get the format error message. Attached directly to the Firewire port it works flawlessly. Any suggestions how to solve the problem?
I really want to do my backups via the wireless network and without having to plug-in the drive directly into my Macbook, which wouldn't be a very mobile solution for a laptop
Would an Airport Extreme station with an attached USB drive behave differently?

  • Is there a way I can store presentations on a mac to stream to apple tv and control from an iPad without storing presentation on iPad at any time or connecting to the internet; i.e. just through local wifi network?

I am looking at setting up a Local Wifi Network using a Mac and Airport Extreme.
I wish to store presentations on the Mac.
I wish to teach from the presentations through Apple TVs in my classrooms using IPad to control presentation, annotate etc
I don't want to have to upload presentation to iPad from Mac as this will be in server room.
I don't want to access internet so iCloud Drive is out of the question.
    What options do I have?
    Many thanks

You would need to find an app that lets you remotely access the Mac (e.g. Logmein). You would need to be aware of how much the network can handle.

  • Snow Leopard Time Machine - Backup to a Network Drive is it possible?

I have a MacBook Pro 17" 2.5Ghz, with a 250gb harddrive, running Snow Leopard 10.6.1. I want to do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard and I want to run a backup first. I don't have any external drives big enough for the job, but I do have network drives that have enough space. Can anyone give me directions on how to set up Time Machine to work with network destination drives? I read an online article that it was possible to do this with Leopard, though I never got it to work. If all else fails, I'll have to buy a new external drive. (Money's tight right now though.) If any of you have recommendations for good fast external drives, I'd appreciate your opinions on that too. (But I really hope I can get the network drives to work.) Thanks!

Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or a drive running Leopard or Snow Leopard on another Mac on the same local network. It will often back-up to a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme, but even that is, technically, unsupported, and may require running a special Terminal command to make it work.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some hardware or "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.

  • Create local wifi network on OS X without internet connection

    Hi,
is there anyway to create a local wifi network without internet connection to play multiplayer games like call of duty on macbook pro ?

Is it safe to assume that you are connecting your MBP to a wireless router already?
If you are then all the other LAN machines should also connect to that same router even if internet access is turned off.
LAN parties are fun and they require the computers to have certain port setups for certain games.
It is possible, though I don't play COD (I'm a Battlefield man) and I can't help with the details of COD.
When my son has his friends over we  use a wired hub setup and we  make the laptop guys use the wired connection - it's  more stable. I admit that we always use the internet. The last LAN party we had without the internet was a Battlefield 1942 setup with one computer hosting the local server (and that was years ago.)

  • Time machine added to existing network

I am attempting to add a time capsule to an existing wireless network. Would be grateful for instructions as I do not know what to do. There is already an existing airport extreme set as router and I am a tenant and do not wish to disturb the existing set up which works very well. I just want my Time Machine to join the network.
    Thx:)

Hi Matt, thank you so much for your kind offer and yes, this does help quite a bit. We are renting a luxurious and quite a large single story home here in Muscat that has been completely wired for Wifi. There is a master router that distributes the wifi signal to nearby devices and several airport extreme slaves that receive and amplify the signal at a distance to the master.
I was hoping to allow the Time Capsule to join the network and function as one of the slaves while also allowing it to perform its mission as a backup device. I removed one of the airport extremes and installed the Time Capsule in its place. The time capsule warmed up and began to blink yellow. When I opened the airport utility on the master computer it offered to take me through a process that I was afraid to try because it indicated that I would be modifying the network... hence the original query - to try to learn from this forum so that I could do this without making a mistake and screwing up what is presently a wonderful system...
Is this helpful regarding your queston?
    Thanks and best regards
    Chris

After the firmware upgrade last week, the local WIFI networks pop up when I turn on my phone, I have WIFI turned off, how do I turn off the pop up?

What OS X version are you using?
Can you take a screenshot of the pop-up notification?
To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse button. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot on your Desktop.
If you can't find it on your Desktop look in your Documents or Downloads folder.
If you want to attach a screenshot to a response here, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the window the cursor is on.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.

  • How to install time machine to existing wifi

I previously used my time machine for wifi and backup then switched to ISP provided router/modem  (upon their request after months of poor reception) I know want to connect my time machine to this wifi to continue with regular backups.  Its plugged into to the router/modem and have green light but is not showing in airport utility.  How do I properly install this or is it not recommend.  I'm guessing the other option would be to connect directly to my iMac.

I am trying to avoid having you reset the Time Capsule and start all over.
Make sure that the iMac is the only device connected to the Time Capsule.  There should be no other Ethernet cables connected to the Time Capsule at this time, other than the iMac connection.
Power off both the iMac and Time Capsule, wait a minute, then start up the iMac for a minute, then start up the Time Capsule and let it run a minute.
Try again with AirPort Utility.  Click the Other WiFi Devices tab in AirPort Utility to see if there is an option there for Ethernet. If yes, click on Ethernet.
See if AirPort Utility can see the Time Capsule now.

  • BB Curve 8520 not connecting to local Wifi network

I bought this BB two days ago.
Device info: BB Curve 8520  OS v5.0.0.681
Your carrier: T-Mobile Prepaid (the Netherlands)
No Apps and 138598276 Bytes free space
    No Apps installed
    My problem:
I cannot get my local WiFi to work. I can see the 8520 with IP-nr listed in the Wireless clients overview of my DLink DIR-655 router. I see my local network-id listed on the phone's screen beside T-Mobile. The Wifi symbol is grey. In WiFi profiles I can see my network id with a blackbox and white line it.
Whenever I want to make contact through WiFi with for example the hotspot browser I immediately see this message which I translated from Dutch: "Cannot connect to the internet. Try again later."
I have added Wifi with WPS and manually, but nothing helps. Has it something to do with BIS ? I have not used this service and don't even know how to activate that. I am not sure if I even want to do that. I just want to be able to access internet using my local Wifi network.
I also did a battery pull, a router reboot, but still no go.
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance,
    Roland

My time machine does not back up and giving me this error message: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Amiel’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use. Pls help.

Make sure that there are no other Macs backing up at the present time.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back in
This will "fix" things about 98% of the time. Post back if you are in the unlucky 2% category.

  • How to convert case-sensitive to extended journal format

I have two apple computers (extended journal format) that have been backed up via a time capsule. I have just noticed that the TC is formatted as case-sensitive. I do not know why case-sensitive. In an effort to ensure consistency of file format then I seek to somehow remove case-sensitive formatting. I presume no/minimal underlying case-sensitivity issues within file names as source data is not formatted in case-sensitive manner.
I have tried SuperDuper to clone the TC to an external HDD but the application cloned the formatting in addition to the data.
I have attempted use of Disk Utility to copy content from source (TC) to destination (HDD) but this yielded error messages that noted different file format types.
It there a way to convert/remove case sensitive formatting from TC?
I appreciate that I could simply reformat TC to extended journal format but this would presumably erase all my backup data.
    Any guidance most welcomed.

    RossM wrote:
So I guess my choice is to "leave well alone" as Pondini suggests and accept the fact that cloning TC onto HDD has now formatted my new HDD as case-sensititive.
Actually, you may have two choices, depending on how you're going to be backing-up to the new HD:
Your best bet, by far, is to back up to it directly, rather than connecting it to the TC.  That's much faster and more reliable.  If so:
    * Leave the TC backups alone.  Reformat the HD as case-ignorant and let Time Machine start fresh on it.  You can always see and restore from the old ones via the Browse... option, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17.
    * Format the HD as case-sensitive and copy the backups from the TC to it. But don't copy the whole sparse bundle; copy the Backups.backupdb folder from the sparse bundle to the top level of the HD.  (Sparse bundles are used only for network backups.)  See #18 in the FAQ; you'll need the 4th procedure (copy network backups to be used locally.
But if you're going to connect the HD to the TC and back up to it that way, it doesn't matter how you format the HD, since the backups must be in a sparse bundle, that has its own format.  Two choices for that:
    * Leave the TC backups alone. Connect the HD to the TC and select it as the TM destination, and Let Time Machine start fresh on it.  You can always see and restore from the old ones via the Browse... option, as above.   (There is a way to speed up the first backup; see the blue box in #Q2 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.)
    * Copy ("Archive") the TC's internal disk to the external HD, per the green box in #Q6 of the same article.  Then select the external as your Time Machine destination via Time Machine Preferences.
Is this simply deferring a problem issue to another time (aagh)? Or to somehow try and remove this inconsistency and remove case-sensitive formatting from all tech items, even if this might mean reformatting and losing old backup data?
No.  There's not really a problem, unless you change the case of file/folder names and try to restore the old ones to the same place via the TM browser, per the link in my earlier post.  That's the only possible downside.
Does Time Machine require case-sensitive formatting on its destination drive?
No.  It's the default, but case-ignorant is fine, unless you ever want to add a case-sensitive volume.  Then you're in a pickle.
Or does Time Capsule only function witih case-sensitive formatting?
No.  The TC's actual disk is case-ignorant; it's only the Time Machine sparse bundle that's case-sensitive by default.
The benefit of case-sensitive formatting as Apple default seems rather unclear to me
It's the default only for Time Machine backups.  Everything else defaults to case-ignorant.
The advantage is, once you've been backing-up your internal HD for weeks, months, or years, and want to add a case-sensitive external HD to be backed-up, you can.   If the backups are case-ignorant, you can't.

  • HT4906 The backup disk is not in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required.

    Time Machine error!
The backup disk is not in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required.
    And what's Time Capsule?

    If you're trying to use Time Machine with an external hard drive the drive must be formatted OS X Extended (journaled);
So use Disk Utility to reformat the EHD and then open Time Machine and select the drive again.
