Time machine on more than one hard disk?

Hello,
I'd like to have two copies of time machine back up on two different hard drives. Is that possible?

For quality, performance, and support:

I've been looking at some Iomega solutions, but haven't tried any of them yet:

There are probably cheaper solutions by Western Digital, but they are behind the curve.
I don't use any Buffalo products. Too Dicey, unreliable devices by reputation.

  • If my backup HD is not large enough, can Time Machine use more than one destination HD?

Hi, I have about 0,8 Tb on my Mac + 0,9 Tb in an external HD + 2,5 Tb in another external HD.
I have plenty of other HDs with 1-2 Tb that I could use as backup. Can I use them in Time Machine? Can Time Machine split all the data from my Mac and source HDs in more than one destination HD? I would love it if I could avoid buying large 6-10Tb HDs; they are still expensive... I'll appreciate your kind inputs!

Technically, you could store parts of your backup on different drives, but it would require you to be constantly changing the items excluded. It is designed to be a single backup, which you can do the entire backup to more than one drive.

  • Time machine on more than one back up drive?

Once you outgrow a hard drive, can you specify Time Machine to continue on a 2nd drive or do you have to buy a bigger drive? This is really confusing to me as i almost filled 500GB and do video work.

I have a slightly different fix on the same question. I have been backing up to two external drives, one at home and one at work. Time machine does not seem to mind - I just open time Machine Preferences and choose the appropriate disk drive depending on where I am at the time. The drive icon goes from orange to blue and the backup starts.
That said, I did fill up one drive and began fresh on a new drive at work I just keep the old drive in a drawer and have never tried to restore from it. Are you saying the content of that old drive is lost?

  • TIME MACHINE ON MORE THAN ONE DISK KEEPING THE OLD DISK

If the HD used for TM becomes full I would like to install a new one bigger and stert it over. I see one could clone the previous HD to have acces to previous BU but I would prefer to keep the old disk for few months untill I am sure I will not need anithing older and in the time TM has built up a new BU.
To be more clear: mi present TM Disk goues back to May 2008 and is 320GB. I remove it and use a new HD 500GB which will start to keep my BU from now. Will it be possible to disconnect the nes HD and connect gain the old if I wish to find something dated from May to today ??

    Yes,
it will be possible. Just plug the old 320GB HD, you won't even need to unplug the new 500GB one, then right-click the Time Machine Dock icon and choose "browse other Time Machine disks", then you may choose the old 320GB one and restore anything you need from it.
You can then change back to the 500GB or to any other newer one too, as you wish.

I have a new Mac Air and would like to back up to my existing Time Machine which I also use for my older Macbook. Can I use back up both on time machine?

General rule of thumb is you need a drive about 2-4 times the size of the total amount of data being backed up. See #1.

I backup 2 computers to the same drive and have never had any problems.

  • Can on use more than one hard drive to backup with time machine ?

Can one use more than one hard drivewith time machine ?

Yes, if you have the Mountain Lion operating system installed on the Macs that you want to back up.
I don't know what the maximum number of hard drives might be, but I have tested with 4 and it works fine. Time Machine automatically rotates the backups when you do this, so drive #1 will be backed up first, then #2, #3, etc. and then back to #1, etc.

  • Time Machine & More than one backup disk

Hi, I was told a while back by an Apple Engineer that I could use say two drives for my Time Machine backups. The reason being that if my main computer fails then I would at that moment have no backup, just the one Time Machine disk so all my eggs would be in that basket. I don't like the odds so wanted to find out if there was another option, a better option. He told me:
I can have one disk that I use one week, I called this the Blue Disk and the next week
Choose the second disk, I called this one the Orange Disk and he said that each alternate backup would be independent of each other.
My question is, is this true and okay to do because I've only last week been told by another Apple engineer that this was definitely not the case and that I would have no complete backup and therefore if the worst happened and my computer failed I wouldn't even have one working Time Machine Backup!! I would be stuffed.
I really don't wan't to mess around with third party backup applications because I've come unstuck in the past before doing exactly this. I hoped that Time Machine was the answer to all my prayers.
I cannot have just one backup of my computer because the work is too critical to risk loosing and also with only one Time Machine backup that means that every time I backup all my work is in one place and connected. This is very bad because 18 months ago we had a powercut whilst Time Machine was backing up and both the computer and the Time Machine backup were destroyed. No way of getting back the files at all. I always keep the second backup in a secure place off site.

Sorry went on a bit there Question was:
Can I use more than one external disk for Time Machine to backup onto alternately (One one week, the other then next week). and still have two complete independent backups of my computer.
Yup. Each will be complete and independent. The first backup after the switch will be longer than usual, as Time Machine catches up with all the changes made since the last backup +*to that disk.+*
You must tell Time Machine each time you swap disks, though, via Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk.
A better solution, however, might be to use one drive permanently with Time Machine, and the other with a different app. See #27 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for some suggestions.

  • Problems Copying Time Machine Back-Up to New Hard Disk

I tried copying my old time machine back-ups from a 500 GB WD HDD to a new Seagate 1TB. Followed the instructions from "Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive". Although terribly slow it seemed to work all well initially. Had it run over night, then discovered the next morning the process was apparently hanging.
Thinking that maybe the energy saver options were the cause of the problem, I unchecked "put hard disk to sleep when possible". So went through the same painful process. Cannot believe that after about 7 h of transfering the whole thing is stuck again:
More than 2 million items were apparently copied, now nothing is happening at all... (neither GB nor minutes changing anymore)
    1) Is this a common problem? More importantly: how can it be solved?
    2) Is there another way to transfer time machine back-ups to another hard disk?
    Thanks!

This is getting (more) annoying: turned out that something went wrong with the 500 GB HDD with the original time machine back-up. Managed to repair it in the 3rd attempt with disk utility. Heard of SuperDuper and thought I'd give it a try.
Cloning the back-up disk to the new 1 TB HDD seemed to work well, but I am a bit surprised with the result:
It seems time machine recognizes now the 1 TB Seagate HDD as a 500 GB (the size of the original WD) only?

    Create a concatenated disk set
Increase storage space with a concatenated RAID set (also called “Just a Bunch of Disks” or JBOD). If you need one large disk, but you have only several smaller disks, you can create a concatenated disk set to use several small disks as one large disk.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select one of the disks that you want in the set, and then click RAID.
Click Add (+), and type a name for the RAID set.
Choose a format from the Format pop-up menu. Usually you’ll choose the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Choose Concatenated Disk Set from the RAID Type pop-up menu.
Drag the disks you want to add to the set to the list on the right.
    Click Create.
    Exerpt from:
Disk Utility 12.x: Create a RAID set - Apple - Support
Note that the biggest CON to concatenated RAID configurations is vulnerability to volume failure. If either disk fails, the whole volume fails. If you choose this option, I would highly recommend backing up your music to a cloud service. There are very cheap per GB/storage, and some of the most reputable actually offer unlimited storage:

  • How do I encrypt my Time Machine Backup on the External Hard disk

I have taken a backup of my data onto an external Hard Disk. I have used the Time Machine application to take the back up.

    Many thanks!
    Have you selected the disk?
You can only encrypt disks that are directly-connected (ie, not on a network), with the GUID partition map scheme.
Put your mouse pointer on the dimmed checkbox, and after a moment an explanation should appear.

  • Can Time Machine backup more than just one disc?

I'm new to Time Machine and have set it up to back up my iMacs main hard drive and this seems to be working fine, but I would like Time Machine to back up one other folder on an external hard drive to.
    Is this possible?
    Hope someone can help.
    Pete

Time Machine can back up external HDs, if they're formatted for a Mac.  See how the drive in question is listed in the exclusions box in TM Prefs > Options.  If it's listed in black, just select it and click the minus sign at the bottom of the widow.  Then it will be backed-up.
If it's listed in gray, though, that means it's not formatted for a Mac and Time Machine cannot back it up (and you can't remove it from the exclusion list).  You'll have to copy the data elsewhere temporarily, reformat it, then copy the data back.  See #1 in Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing  Disks if you need formatting instructions.

  • Can my iTunes library be on more than 1 hard disk ?

    Hi,
While having my music library on my computer, can I also store my movies files on the hard disk connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) ?
    Regards.

While I don't know about using an AEB, yes you can have it on more than one disk if you are willing to do some extra effort.  iTunes is really set up to work with one disk.  You can turn off the copy to Media folder when adding to iTunes feature in iTunes references, or you can just always remember to hold down the option key while adding an item to iTunes and iTunes will not copy it to the media folder.  The only thing is, other features of iTunes may not behave as you are used to.  For example, if you delete a track this may turn into a two step process with deleting it form iTunes, then deleting the media file itself wherever you are keeping it.

  • Time Machine to back up external hard disk

    Hi,
I 'm going to add an external hard disk to my iMac for storing music files and another one as backup. Not sure if Time Machine is possible to do auto back up for the external harddisk rather than the one built inside the iMac?

provided the external is formatted mac os extended, TM will back it up along with the internal drive.

  • Why does my mac mini crash and reboot when I do a time machine backup to a USB Hard Disk?

This is the second time it has happened, the first was with a powered USB Hard Disk, this time with a WD Elements HD.
The first time, it crashed and popped up an alert saying the machine needed to be restarted.
After restarting it continued, then around half way through it crashed again.
It then would not boot as it said the Mac Mini's HD was corrupted.
Tried to repair using the recovery mode, with no joy.
Reformatted Hard Disk, went to recover using online recovery, got a 6002F error and it wouldn't reinstall
Took to apple service centre, they wanted to charge to reinstall the OS (put them straight on that ).
Now it looks like it's doing it again, this time after the first crash I'm just copying the files I need manually to the external Hard Disk, which so far is OK.
Seems these macs aren't so reliable.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

    Hi den.thed,
thanks for the tips, unfortunately when tryong to start the machine to do a Hardware test (to check RAM) I get the error 6002D so I'm guessing there's something more complicated afoot.
Unfortunatley the service centre here in Malaysia doesn't seem to have any "Geniuses" or indeed any "Comptencies" as it has only just come back from their after they had it for a week.
