Time Machine on older Mac

Hi,
I upgraded to Leopard recently and it works great however I am not able to use Time Machine. It simply opens up two Finder windows then doesn't do anything until I click the red X on the finder window, then it quits. I am aware that this is more then likely because I have an obsolete ATI Rage 16MB graphics card (which I do plan on upgrading) however, I remember hearing something about a simple interface for Time Machine that doesn't require any major graphics card to use. Does it exist? If so how do I use it. I remember hearing that on certain Macs this was the only interface you could use (no fancy black hole with the flying windows).

No, technically you do not. Specifications are for each processor. Dual 500 MHz does not qualify as the equivalent of a 1 GHz processor. In fact it's a surprise the Leopard installer did not prevent the installation (unless you are using XPostFacto.)

  • How can Time Machine restore older Mac Pro's - But not Disk Utility?

    Hey,
So I had posted a discussion earlier last week asking about older MacPro's (2006 - 2008) versions that do not seem to run snow leopard if you just try to install with the MAC OS X 10.6.2 disc - I was trying to use my new Snow Leopard image that i have created for the new school year, and I tried to image a 2006 MacPro model and a 2008 MacPro model, etc...  This would not work, it would let me start the imaging process and then it would give me an error that looked like this "ev/disk02o does not have enough space"  And i just figured that was the computer code way of telling me that the image i had created was not readable by the computer or the disk utility, but this must be something that was written into the programing of Disk Utility or Snow Leopard because i found a loop hole - I was able to "restore" the backup of the new image that i made using Time Machine on the 2008 MacPro and even the 2006 MacPro - which both have earlier versions of the Intel chip.  The restored image works fine, all programs work the same as a 2009 MacPro that i imaged the same image onto using disk utility and i have found no problems yet using any part of the system.  MY QUESTION:  I'm wondering how i was able to do this and if anyone has had a similar experience trying to get images accross a bunch of different models of MacPro's - Is Time Machine a "better" way to restore the disk image?  Did Apple do this on purpose, so that you cant image newer images onto older machines?  Very confused as to why it makes you use Time Machine...
    Thanks again,
    Kyle R.

You are reading things into that error message that are simply not there.
Take the error message at face value.
When it calculates all the "stuff" it has to get onto your disk to do the installation, it does not fit.  (including the .dmg, the Virtual Disk created to mount the dmg, and all the temporay files that are added before the new version takes over and discards the old stuff)  all that stuff in total does not fit.)
Sure the final image fits, and sure you can restore that final image using other methods: Time machine works, and I'll bet Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper work as well.
Using the method you were using, the sum of all the temp files and all the program files do not fit. It is NOT a conspiracy.

  • How to import mailboxes from Time Machine to new Mac

I had Time Machine backing up our old G5. We got a Mac Pro back in November and I never was able to import the mail from the G5 to the Mac Pro so I left it alone and just kept using mail on the old G5. Well, the G5 took a dump last monday. I currently have the Time Machine backup for that computer connected to our Mac Pro (but not using it as backup yet). So, the mail from the G5 should be on the Time Machine backup right? If so, can I import it into Mail on the Mac Pro?
I also pulled one of the hard drives from the G5 and have it in the Mac Pro in the 2nd bay just to make sure that HD wasn't dead. It works fine and I tried importing the .mbox files from that drive but it appears that all the mail on that particular drive are from like 2006. So, again, I need to find out how to import mail from the Time Machine drive. Any thoughts?
    10.7.4
    Mail 5.2

Back up what data? Mail data? I don't have any yet. I haven't used Apple Mail on this Mac Pro yet.
Edit: Launching Mail and holding Option right afterwards does nothing. Holding down option and then launching Mail does nothing.
Oooooh.... launching time machine while holding down option......
Edit again.... I don't have a Time Machine menu because that disk is not currently set up as time machine for the Mac Pro yet. I don't want to use it as a backup for this computer yet. I just want to be able to pull some of the backed up contents from it until I'm set.

  • How do I use Time Machine on my Mac to back up files stored on an AirDisk?

I have a Macbook Pro 17-inch, Mid 2009, with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I use an external HDD connected directly to my Mac via FireWire 800 for Time Machine backups. I have an external HDD connected to my Airport Extreme (Gigabit) router that I use for file storage. My iTunes library and iPhoto library are both stored on this AirDisk. Can I use Time Machine on my Mac to back up the files that I store on my AirDisk? If so, then please describe how to do so. Thank you for your assistance.

Unmount and physcially disconnect the TimeMachine drive and reboot the computer without it being connected.
Reboot the comptuer with the disk inside the machine holding the option or c key down, select the disk to boot from.
Second screen in is the installer, under the Ulitites menu is Disk Utility.
Use  Disk Utility to Erase with Security option Zero all Data if your planning to wipe the drive and install 10.6
Don't do the above if your simply reinstalling only OS X 10.6 to cure a problem with it.

  • Can I access my Time Machine from another mac?

My current mac (an iBook G4, early 2005) has I think died irreparably. I'm waiting to see if it can be repaired but in the meantime I'd like to know if I can plug my Time Machine into another Mac (either a friend's or a family member's, both have 2006 MacBooks) and be able to access my stuff? I read elsewhere in the forum that this was possible if you were setting up a new mac, but I won't be able to buy a new computer for a while and need quite badly to be able to get at my documents.

yes, it's possible. plug it into the other computer. control-click on TM inthe dock and choose" browse other Time Machine disks".

Go to the Time Machine Preferences window and turn the big slider to OFF.  You might also select the "None" disk as a destination.
Then erase or reformat the disk.  See Using Disk Utility if you're not sure how.

  • Automatic Time Machine backups to Mac on local network

    Hi,
I've got a headless Mac mini on my network that just runs as a fileserver and doesn't need to be backed up with Time Machine, but it's a convenient place to attach an external USB drive so that my PowerBook and MacBook can back up to it wirelessly.
When I first set up Time Machine on each laptop, the backup disk showed up under 'Change Disk...' in prefs -- I guess the disk was already mounted. The initial backup took forever but worked fine, and subsequent backups have worked fine too. (Everything's running 10.5.2, by the way.)
The problem is that, when the remote drive becomes unmounted (e.g. when I take a laptop to work and back), Time Machine stops backing up automatically until the drive is manually remounted or the "Backup now" option is chosen under the Time Machine menu. When left to its own devices it just sits there forever in "Next backup: When Mac is plugged in" mode, which isn't really what I want -- I was hoping to "set & forget".
So I suppose my question is: can I fix this by actually enabling Time Machine on the Mac mini, rather than just treating the drive as a vanilla network share? I've noticed that the remote drive icon changes when Time Machine is enabled, and maybe there's some other magic going on there too, e.g. to advertise the drive somehow so that Time Machine knows it can automount it at backup time, instead of sitting around waiting for me to do it. I don't want to actually back up any of the Mac mini's files but presumably I can tell Time Machine to ignore (almost) everything on its local drive when performing the backup, just for the sake of having Time Machine turned on.
On the other hand, I don't want to mess around with it if I'm not going to see any improvement, because at least things are working right now. In particular I'm not keen to go through the whole initial backup again, especially for no reason.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
    Cheers,
    -Tom

I have a similar problem, but didn't quite understand the solution...
time machine/capsule backs up my macbook. Just got an imac, and copied the image to it. Didn't realize it REALLY copied the image to it... so Time Machine decided the new imac was the macbook.
No. Time Machine always knows which Mac is which, via an identifier that's embedded in the hardware on the logic board.
But it did copy the +Computer Name,+ which you can change via +System Preferences > Sharing.+
And it did copy the Time Machine preferences file (with the backup location you specified), so it backed-the new Mac up to the same destination.
Now Time Capsule backs up the imac... but not the macbook anymore.
There is still a 425GB sparsebundle for the old macbook on the Time Capsule...
Depending on how you answered this prompt, there may be two sparse bundles:

See #B5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for details.
If you said +Create New Backup,+ there should be two sparse bundles, one for each Mac.
If you said +Reuse Backup,+ there should be one, containing the backups from both, and as it says, the MacBook can no longer use the same set of backups.
Question: Is there a way to reattach to that sparsebundle for backing up the macbook or do I have to start all over?
Probably. First confirm whether there's one sparse bundle or two, and roughly how many backups of the iMac you've done.

  • Time Machine essentially stops Mac responding

I've recently posted on a problem I've had with a misbehaving time capsule.  Different problem now.
I have a fairly old Macbook Pro (one of the early monobody machines), 2.8G Core 2 Duo running 10.8.3. Until recently it's functioned well.  I turned Time Machine off a couple of weeks ago, and turned it back on earlier this week.
I've lost my old Time Machine backups, but am now trying to back up to a new, healthy Time Capsule.  Another mac I have has Time Machine working perfectly well on this Time Capsule.
Earlier I started a new backup and left the machine.  4 hours later I returned to find 50+ GB out of 200GB backed up, but the mac itself is pretty much non responsive.  It takes up to 20 seconds to switch between applications, then the spinning spectrum wheel is in evidence much of the time.
Some info on what I've done to try to diagnose the problem
I've verified the disk on the macbook, it verifies fine.  I've restarted in safe mode to clean up (whatever safe mode cleans up) then rebooted again.
I've tried switching to a different admin account which gives the same result.
Running Activity Monitor is interesting but not too informative (to me)  In short, nothing seems to be happening.  Not much CPU activity, ditto network or disk activity.  So nothing seems to be hogging the CPU.
The problem seems to be independent of whether I run over wireless or hard connect to the Time Capsule
If I stop the backup and turn Time Machine off the mac responds as normal.
If I turn Time Machine back on and it's waiting for the next scheduled backup, again, the mac responds as normal.  So it'd appear to be solely a problem when the TM backup process is actually "active"

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

ONLY if you partition the external and use Winclone for windows-but leave as much space as possible for TM.

the migration assistent could not read the files.
Migration Assistant worked just fine when I transferred data from an old Leopard (10.5.x) Mac to a new Mac that was running Mavericks (10.9.3). Since you have a new Mac, you might want to enlist the help of Apple Support with your 90 days of free phone support.
I had to run Migration Assistant twice.....once to locate files that were originally backed up using Time Machine and a second time to locate files that were simply on the drive in normal folders.
You must have the disk password for the drive that was used to originally create the Time Machine backups from the older Mac.  If you placed a password on the drive, then you would need that as well to transfer data in normal folders.

  • Time Machine deletes older backups after restore...

Yesterday I took the plunge to replace a failing 4TB RAID0 on my MacPro running ML 10.8.3. The RAID volume contains two non-admin user accounts for everyday work that together are about 2TB.
I installed the two new HDDs, RAIDed them and gave them the same name as before. Then I ran a restore of the two accounts from my Time Machine backup. This took about 4 hours.
Not everything was fine at the end (particularly some permissions in Documents were wrong), but by and large the accounts worked. Today it was time for Time Machine to backup the new changes, but this failed miserably: TM completely deleted the earlier backups even though 99.99% did not have changed. Later TM complained it did not have enough space even though the earlier backup fit on exactly the same volume and there was definitely enough space.
Conclusion: Don't trust TM to keep older backups after a restore. This extremely stupid behaviour fits my impression of ML being unusable for serious Mac users.

When a startup drive is replaced Time Machine creates a new backup because the new drive has a different UUID than the old one -- it is a different disk.
When this occurs, TM does not delete the older backup sparsebundle, which is still taking up space on the backup drive. This is a safety feature.
You can access the previous backup using Browse Other Time Machine Disks from the TM icon in the Dock.
Lots of good info can be found here.

  • Time machine points to mac hd how do i point it to external hd only

I have an older imac but a intel machine. I have an external HD that time machine uses but it also points to the mac HD as a backup.
I am wanting to update to snow leopard but it will not update because of the time machine " Max OS X cannot be installed on "Mcintosh HD". This disk is used for time machine backups. "  The window shows the Lacie  external HD up and the Mac HD both as backups.
How do I remove the mac HD as a time machine backup?
    Thank you for your help

Most likely, there's a Backups.backupdb folder at the top level of your internal HD.  That's the folder that Time Machine uses to put backups in; somehow, one has been created on your internal HD.
Just delete it via the Finder.
The Snow Leopard installer won't install on a drive with that folder on it, as a precaution to keep folks from accidentally wiping out their backups.
